A holiday visit to North Carolina this week as I visit with Founder and Executive Director of Theatre In The Park Ira David Wood III. The beloved character actor, who for 48 years has played the part of 'Scrooge' for the theatre's musical production of 'A Christmas Carol' in Raleigh, talks about how his East Carolina roots combined with his love of reading Shakespeare and Dickens started his stage career. The actor and playwright who created his own unique musical/comedy production of a holiday classic, discusses the importance of honesty in acting, building audience trust and the fun of character development. He also talks about two of his children who followed him in their own careers: Emmy nominated actress Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and son Ira (Artistic Director for Theatre in the Park) and how they still reach out to dad for his creative advice. Bring along your love of the stage (and a mug of wassail!) and join us.

From December 11th-22nd, Theatre in the Park will be presenting their 45th anniversary production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing the show's playwright, Ira David Wood III, who is not only back directing this year, but he’ll also be alternating the role of Ebenezer Scrooge with his oldest son, Ira David Wood IV. Ira David Wood III is the Founder & Executive Director of Theatre In The Park, which happens to be North Carolina’s largest community theatre with an international reputation. David is also best known and loved for annually portraying the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge in his own stage musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which is getting ready to put on its 45th anniversary production this month. The show has been performed annually since 1974 and has been named one of the "Top 20 Events in the Southeast" as well as "one of the most successful shows in North Carolina theatre history." Be sure to catch Theatre in the Park’s 2019 production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. It will be playing at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts from December 11th-15th and at the Durham Performing Arts Center from December 18th-22nd. Ira David Wood III is the founder and Executive Director of Theatre in the Park, which puts on several theatrical performances each season. A native North Carolinian, Wood graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts and spent time in the cast of The Lost Colony (a production he has directed the past few summers) before coming to Raleigh for a state government job in arts.Wood and Raleigh formed a long-term relationship, culminating in his original musical comedy adaptation of A Christmas Carol--the show that will have its 45th annual run this December at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts and the DPAC, and that has become a staple of Christmas in Raleigh. We talked to Wood about the beginnings of Theatre in the Park and A Christmas Carol, theatre and the arts in Raleigh, his legacy as Raleigh's Scrooge, and what his wonderfully creative mind is working on next. Before we talked to David, we discussed a new development in (the area some people call) Midtown, a new Q spot, and the upcoming (potentially weather impacted) Raleigh Christmas Parade. And we share nominees and our picks for the #Top3Raleigh SOUPS.Special thanks to our sponsor, Steele Residential--check them out for buying, selling or renting!Subscribe/rate Podcast Raleigh on your favorite podcast sites:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-raleigh/id1458907220Google: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Inzk5woxrsjwf3zhd5vv3av4yei Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcast-raleighSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6b3dVvLJfO0EqvDGQaFTAP?si=QrcfEq8WSE2h3aEZSGV0pQ

Hear what Theatre in the Park's father-son duo Ira David Wood III and Ira David Wood IV have to say about working together, acting, and the things that can go wrong when you are putting on a live show. About the Guests Ira David Wood III is the founder and artistic director of Theatre in the Park, an institution which has often been credited with raising the bar of theatrical excellence in the Triangle area. David has managed to accumulate impressive film and television credits, having appeared on-screen with such stars as Christopher Walken, Natalie Wood, Neil Patrick Harris, Cliff Robertson, Matthew Modine, James Earl Jones, Burt Reynolds, and Louise Fletcher. Though his list of acclaimed theatre roles is unrivaled in our area, he is probably best known and loved for his portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge in his own musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol. With three international tours to its credit, as well as having played to over one million people over the past 44 years, the production is now cited as “one of the most successful shows in North Carolina theater history.” David is also the author of https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ILPG5A/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000ILPG5A&linkCode=as2&tag=rduonstage-20&linkId=f68f1994dc00d593312351c62c7bb9ef (A Lover’s Guide To The Outer Banks), https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1613467672/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1613467672&linkCode=as2&tag=rduonstage-20&linkId=3ce07b72a48bf7a948a120267be8a536 (Confessions Of An Elf), and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1528900863/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1528900863&linkCode=as2&tag=rduonstage-20&linkId=411bfbe1fe93127bb8e86ab867591f7a (The Russian Galatea). Ira David Wood IV made his first stage appearance as an infant in his father’s 1984 production of A Christmas Carol. Since then he has been seen on television (including as an accomplice on Punk’d), as well as in feature films. Ira taught acting at the prestigious acting studio “The Shop” in North Hollywood, California. His directing credits for Theatre in the Park include Romeo and Juliet, starring his sister Evan Rachel Wood. Noises Off, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Psycho Beach Party. In 2010, Ira played Old Tom, a leading role in the Tony Award-winning show The Lost Colony. While his father was recovering from open heart surgery in 2010, Ira stepped in the role of Scrooge. He now alternates playing the role with his father. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007DK0OQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0007DK0OQ&linkCode=as2&tag=rduonstage-20&linkId=df3e509c22788f6b50f9573d7f5d5bfe (To check out the book David mentions during the podcast, Downwind of Upstage by Michael Green, click here).
