"This is a cautionary tale about how extremism and fascism can creep up on us. It always begins with hate speech and dehumanization... from verbal violence, it's a very short leap to physical violence." — Dr. Georgette Bennett ABOUT THIS EPISODE Dr. Georgette Bennett is an award-winning sociologist, widely published author, former NBC News correspondent, and founder of both the Tanenbaum Center for Inter-Religious Understanding and the Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees — which has mobilized more than $660 million in humanitarian aid. Her latest book, Half Jew, Full Life, tells the extraordinary story of Holocaust survivor Gary "Pips" Phillips, a distant relative who became a surrogate father to Georgette after her own father's death. Pips was classified by the Nazis as a Mischling — half-Jewish — yet voluntarily embraced his Jewish identity at the very moment it could be fatal. Mike and Georgette discuss Pips's four arrests and three escapes, the Nazis who unexpectedly saved his life, the challenge of writing a third-person memoir from psychiatric recordings, and why this story carries urgent lessons about identity, denial, and the creep of extremism. KEY TAKEAWAYS 1. A Holocaust story unlike any other. Pips was a Mischling first degree — an Aryan mother, a Jewish father — who voluntarily chose to be Jewish by becoming a bar mitzvah the very week the Nuremberg Laws were enacted. Almost nothing has been written about people in this category. 2. Nazis both persecuted and saved him. Pips was arrested four times and escaped three times. In key moments, individual Nazis — motivated by love, lust, or personal connection — intervened to save his life, complicating the black-and-white narrative of the Holocaust. 3. Survival was his career. Living underground in Berlin among 6,500 Jews who went into hiding, Pips navigated a world where you couldn't buy food or rent a room without papers stamped with a "J." Every day was a question of where to eat and where to sleep. 4. Psychiatric tapes became the primary source. Pips recorded his life story across dozens of sessions with his psychiatrist. Georgette had them transcribed while he was still alive, giving the book an authentic first-person voice despite being written in third person. 5. Trauma never fully heals. Pips's wife Olga, an Auschwitz survivor, processed her experience through silence and ultimately took her own life in 2005. Pips's own trauma surfaced decades later as severe palpitations with no physical cause. 6. Identity is a lifelong negotiation. Pips spent his entire life seeking acceptance as a Jew despite never formally converting. The title Half Jew, Full Life comes from his own declaration: "I don't want to be a half Jew. I want to be a full Jew." 7. A cautionary tale for today. The book traces how extremism begins with hate speech and dehumanization, and how denial during that phase allows violence to escalate — a pattern Georgette sees playing out in the present day. 8. The American Dream, chapter two. After the war, Pips arrived in America as a waiter and bicycle messenger and ended up co-owning the largest photo agency in the world, hobnobbing with celebrities like Natalie Wood and Raquel Welch — never having owned a camera. Las canciones son de los grupos ingleses The Police, "Espíritus en el mundo material" (Spirits In The Material World 1981) y The Psychedelic Furs, "El fantasma en ti" (The Ghost In You 1984).

From caddying alongside Clark Gable and Cary Grant to starring opposite Spencer Tracy. From the golden age of the studio system to reinventing himself as a television star, Wagner reflects on the journey that made him one of Hollywood's most enduring figures, later delighting a new generation of audiences as Number 2 in the Austin Powers films. He also reflects on his personal life, including his marriage to actress Natalie Wood, and the family and friendships that shaped him, including his wife of nearly four decades, Jill St. John.Caddying for Legends (06:21): Wagner recounts his early days as a caddy, where he found himself watching Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, and Randolph Scott walk down the fairway.Marilyn Monroe and Screen Tests (09:22): As Fox's go-to "screen test guy," Wagner did Marilyn Monroe's first two tests. His own breakthrough came when Zanuck cast him as a shell-shocked soldier in With a Song in My Heart.Spencer Tracy as Mentor (14:49): Working alongside Tracy in Broken Lance, Wagner earned the older actor's respect and friendship.Advice from Cary Grant (18:07): When Wagner was preparing to play a thief for It Takes a Thief, he went to Grant for guidance. He also recalls reaching out to Bette Davis after she publicly praised his work.John Ford Knocks Him Down…Literally (26:39): On the set of a John Ford film, Wagner followed a script direction and glanced toward where music was playing. Ford stopped the scene, questioned him, and knocked him down.Pink Panther (29:21): When the studio system collapsed, and Fox dropped its contract players, Wagner moved to Rome and worked on The Pink Panther, his all-time favorite film.Jill St. John, Family, and Friends (36:16): In one of the episode's most moving moments, Wagner reflects on the profound role friends and family have played in his life.Few careers in Hollywood history span as many eras, genres, or legends as Robert Wagner's, and fewer still have been lived with such grace. Host: Kevin GoetzGuests: Robert WagnerProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Robert Wagner:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_WagnerIMDB: https://wwFor more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.

We are back for our FIFTH SEASON!!! Can you believe that we've been at this for five years now??? I know we can't, but we have 58 episodes where we've paired pot with 117 movies as evidence here. Our earliest film was Georges Méliès' "The Infernal Caudron" from 1903, and our most recent is "Hanky Panky" from 2023. That's getting up on three years old now? Does that count as vintage in tubi years? But enough of our unexpected achievements. We've got our 59th episode right here, and with Valentine's Day just around the corner, we're exploring human sexuality with a pair of films that Philena describes as "more gross than romantic." Everything about BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE (1969) screams the 60s, from Robert Culp in love beads right down to a Burt Bacharach song closing it out, but our crew found it's definitely worth a look as so many people are trying out polyamory with the same level of awkward as our film's titular couple. Plus Robert Culp and Natalie Wood smoke weed like pros Definitely stay tuned for Philena's title for a queer remake that she should really get crackin' on writing! The film also stars Ryan Cannon and Elliot Gould. How is it that Gould is making his Old Movies for Young Stoners debut just now??? BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE is streaming on the Criterion and Roku Channels. Since we featured one of Mexico's most spectacularly-bad films in our last episode with the baffling SANTA CLAUS (1959), Bob felt it was time we explored the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema (1930-1960) with VICTIMS OF SIN (1951), a prime example of the Rumberas genre, a unique combination of musical, noir and intense melodrama. In fact, the emotions may have burned a bit too hot for some of our hosts. Ninón Sevilla is a dancer at the Club Changoo in Mexico City whose life goes to hell after she rescues a baby from a trash can. Directed by the great Emilio Fernández who was the John Huston or Kurosawa of Mexico's Golden Age, but is best known to gringos for playing the Mexican warlord Mapache in Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH (1969). Legend also has it that Fernández was the sculptor's model for the Oscar statuette when he was chilling with Dolores del Río in Hollywood after he was a part of a failed rebellion in Mexico and had to flee to the United States for a while. The contrast of light and shadows of Gabriel Figueroa's cinematography are the equal of anything seen in the best American noirs. VICTIMS OF SIN is now streaming on Criterion Channel. Cory, Bob and Greg begin the show by talking about the pending closures of The Bottom of the Hill and Thee Parkside, two San Francisco punk clubs that they have all played and see a lot of shows at. The conversation brings up the Canadian rock god Thor, which is always welcome. Bottom of the Hill closes at the end of 2026, so please check out a show or ten there while you still can. https://www.bottomofthehill.com/calendar.html And Philena was not one of the influencers invited to screenings of the "Wuthering Heights," which really seems like an oversight by the Warner Bros publicity team if you ask us. Hey movie PR people, contact us at oldmoviesforyoungstoners@gmail.com and invite Philena to your premieres! She's got the power! Our focus is 7708 Woodrow Wilson Drive, a beautiful English Country home built by Natalie Wood's parents, and where she begins her married life with Robert Wagner. Natalie sells the home in the 1960s to the "Earth Mother of Laurel Canyon" Cass Elliot, who entertains in grand style until her death in 1974. Musician Harry Nilsson enters the frame from here, with Ringo Starr as a featured player. Dan Aykroyd and Donna Dixon have many years in the home, eventually selling to Beverly D'Angelo in 2008. So many players in our universe floated in and out through the decades in this home, along with perhaps some actual floating ghosts. All the spooky encounters are also included in today's story! On this episode of Still Here Hollywood, Steve Kmetko sits down with the luminous Juliet Mills, the beloved star of Nanny and the Professor, to trace a life and career that spans West End theater, Broadway, classic television, and unforgettable Hollywood collaborators. Juliet shares how her family and upbringing shaped her worldview, why gratitude became one of her guiding principles, and what it was really like stepping into the spotlight as “Nanny” during a time when television was far more “tea and nightgowns” than romance and realism. She also looks back on the global success of the show, her bond with co-star Richard Long, and why she believes the series might have lasted longer if the on-screen relationship had been allowed to evolve. Plus, Juliet tells behind-the-scenes stories from her career highlights, including working with Billy Wilder and Jack Lemmon on Avanti! (yes, the role that required her to gain 35 pounds, a true acting challenge if spaghetti is involved). She also opens up about love, marriage, and fate, as her husband Maxwell Caulfield joins the conversation for a charming, honest look at how their relationship began during The Elephant Man, with a cameo appearance from Natalie Wood in the origin story. However, Stefanie's tender age required too many work time restrictions as the production's intensity ramped up and her part was re-cast. She describes old school studio system rigors, where actors “sold their lives” for a seven-year contract. Restrictive, yes, but also an entertainment education that taught singing, dancing, acting, and stage presence, alongside publicity essentials.Still under contract with Columbia, she was loaned out to United Artists to make McLintock! and Stefanie shares memories of working with John, Michael and Patrick Wayne. The legendary show biz tales are boundless. We dive deep into the movies that reveal what really happens behind the scenes in Tinseltown—sometimes with affection, sometimes as a cautionary tale to be careful what you wish for. Movies like Sullivan's Travels (1941), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and Sunset Boulevard (1950), all offer a fascinating look at the machinations that go into making films. This week, we'll be discussing six lesser known moves that five us a peak behind the scenes and show us very different sides of the not-always-so-glamorous ways that Hollywood works. Across genres and generations, these films offer an insider's view not just of how Hollywood works, but of the dreams, delusions, and dramas that make moviemaking an art form all its own. Natalie Wood was one of the most loved child stars of the silver screen in the mid-20th century, and the rare celebrity who was able to transition gracefully into grown-up roles all while maintaining an air of dignity and grace. In the 1960s, Natalie Wood was one of the world's leading actress, her star shining as bright as Elizabeth Taylor's. She'd been acting since she was a small child, appearing in movies like Miracle on 34th Street. She'd starred opposite James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, and she'd been linked romantically to Warren Beatty, Michael Caine, Elvis Presley, and Dennis Hopper.
