In 1863, a group of German Methodist families came to the edge of Wild Fowl Bay near Bay Port, Michigan, with a bold plan. They would build a Christian colony in the wilderness. They called it Ora Labora, meaning “Pray and Work.”Led by Emil Baur and backed by the Harmony Society of Pennsylvania, the settlers raised cabins, cleared land, built mills, opened a store, created a post office, and tried to form a self-sufficient community during the darkest years of the Civil War.But faith alone could not overcome debt, labor shortages, hard winters, poor planning, and growing distrust. Within a few years, Ora Labora began to break apart. Then came the fire of 1871, which changed the region forever. This episode tells the dramatic story of Michigan's forgotten German colony, the dream that brought families to Huron County, and the reasons their settlement faded into history.A story of faith, work, ambition, and loss on the shore of Wild Fowl Bay.The End of the Road in Michigan is a production of Thumbwind Publications

What do these early encounters tell us about the contested beginnings of colonial America? In the 1580s, English explorers ventured west in search of land, influence and advantage. In this episode, we dive deep into his fascinating book, Mysteries of the National Parks, exploring forgotten tales that defy simple explanation. From bizarre crimes to perplexing natural phenomena, this conversation peels back the curtain on the unsolved national park mysteries that have puzzled historians and scientists for decades. We also explore the eerie phenomenon of the Angel's Glow at Shiloh Battlefield, where wounded Civil War soldiers' wounds emitted a strange blue light, a mystery later potentially solved by a high school science project involving bioluminescent bacteria. Other incredible topics include the strange history of the Gateway Arch and its surprising connection to Mussolini, the famous sliding stones of Death Valley's Racetrack Playa, and the debate over whether Utah's Upheaval Dome was created by a salt formation or a massive meteor impact. Introduced as ‘The Lost Colony', this is another episode of The Goon Show which sees Neddie Seagoon being duped by Grytpype-Thynne and Moriarty. In this case, they convince him that he is a Native American who rightfully owns New York – his ancestors having sold the land to Dutch settlers in the 1620s for a piece of brown string, eleven pence in notes, a Mickey Mouse watch, remains of a small boiled chicken and a life-sized statue of Sabrina. Seagoon paddles to America in a zinc bath tub and through a dubious transaction secures a Native American birth certificate. He tries to sue the US government, claiming New York belongs to him, but ends up in jail. Once free and bent on revenge he attempts to blow the city sky-high – but at what cost? Joining Tyler this week is writer & producer Tom Salinsky, whose new podcast – All British Comedy Explained – is an exercise in introducing British comedy to his American friend, comedian Abigoliah Schamaun. Abigoliah has lived in the UK for many years but her knowledge of British comedy history is limited so Tom is trying to put that right. At the time of recording they have covered Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Young Ones and Not Only But Also – all three of them game-changers – and coming up they will be examining The Goon Show, so Tyler figured it was a neat idea to get Tom onto discuss an episode which rarely gets talked about. The Sale Of Manhattan was broadcast almost exactly seventy years ago and while it contains some questionable stereotypes there is plenty to enjoy and it was a great opportunity to gain Tom's perspective on the series. This week I'm very excited to share with you some recent developments in the story of the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke. I'm joined by Scott Dawson, who runs the Lost Colony Museum in the town of Buxton, on Hatteras Island. For a long time, Scott has been working with British archaeologist Dr. Mark Horton to excavate sites of old Native American villages in Buxton, left by a group known as the Croatoan. What they have discovered recently may just be the first real “smoking gun” evidence to prove what really happened to the colonists. And, no spoilers, but it's pretty much exactly what we should have already realized happened.Support the Croatoan Archaeological Society here! - cashatteras.comEarlier Roanoke Colony Episodes - Episode 27 (part 1) and episode 28 (part 2)Support the show! Episode Summary: In this episode of From The Void, host John Williamson sits down with renowned archaeologist and historian Dr. Mark Horton to investigate one of America's most enduring mysteries: the disappearance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. In 1587, over 100 English settlers vanished from Roanoke Island, leaving behind almost no trace—except for a cryptic word carved into a tree: Croatoan. Was the colony destroyed, absorbed into Indigenous communities, or did something even stranger happen? Drawing on decades of research and excavation work, Dr. Horton sheds new light on the evidence, debunks popular myths, and shares the latest archaeological discoveries that might finally solve the puzzle. Together, they explore how this story has shaped American mythology—and why it still captures our imagination centuries later. Step into the void as we trace the footsteps of a vanished colony. Guest: Dr. Mark Horton •Professor of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage at the Royal Agricultural University •Leading expert on early colonial settlements and transatlantic exploration •Director of multiple archaeological projects investigating Roanoke, Hatteras Island, and early English settlements •Advocate for integrating Indigenous histories and archaeological findings into the Roanoke narrative Topics Covered: •The original Roanoke expeditions and colonization attempts •John White's return and the cryptic Croatoan carving •Indigenous tribes of the region and evidence of integration •Environmental challenges, including drought and famine •Recent archaeological discoveries on Hatteras Island •Why the Roanoke story still matters today Recommended Resources & Links: •

What do you get when you mix Broadway royalty with sci-fi cloning, environmental theater, and a dash of boogie-woogie piano? A wildly entertaining conversation with the legendary Terrence Mann. From his earliest days growing up in a musical household to helping launch the North Carolina Theatre, Terry's journey is packed with passion, persistence, and a whole lot of timing. He shares the story behind how he actually got cast in Cats (it involves London and a royal connection), and how he practically willed his way into Les Misérables after being told multiple times they didn't want to see him. His advice for young performers? “Have no fear, there are no wrong choices, and be specific”—words he lives by and teaches. Now back on stage in Broadway's The Great Gatsby as Meyer Wolfsheim, Terrence opens up about what it feels like to return to the theater after years in “Foundation land,” filming Apple TV's epic sci-fi series. We also dive into his work as a director, educator, and his longtime love for North Carolina's historic Lost Colony production. And yes, we play a game of Plot in 60 Seconds, get a surprise cameo from iOS balloons, and bond over the beautiful chaos of 1980s New York auditions. This episode is packed with decades of wisdom and a whole lot of heart. Terrence Mann is a three-time Tony nominee best known for originating iconic roles such as Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Javert in Les Misérables, and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. His Broadway credits also include Pippin, Tuck Everlasting, The Addams Family, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Rags. On screen, he's appeared in Sense8, all four Critters films, and currently stars as Brother Dusk in the Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation. He's also an accomplished director, educator, and co-founder of Triple Arts, a musical theater training program.
