"Every day is a new, exciting challenge. I am having a great time doing it, but it is a challenge." Anita Smith has been creating live theatre for nearly 30 years. She is the Executive and Artistic Director of the 25th Street Theatre Company and loves providing Saskatchewan artists the opportunity to tell their stories and showcase their skills. The company's latest production, however, is pushing Anita and her team to their limits. Behind Closed Doors takes people to six different sites across Saskatoon to explore unseen conversations and gives them a chance to experience in a performance in a unique venue specific to the story. Each play is 20 minutes, has limited capacity (we're talking 6-8 people per venue), and will no doubt make the impression on audience members. Anita and 25th Street Theatre is committed to supporting Saskatchewan playwrights and Behind Closed Doors is giving six playwrights the chance to share their voices with our community. I am a huge fan of Anita as an artist and a person, and any opportunity to talk with her on the podcast is one that I will take. She graciously took time in-between her many duties to speak with me on the University of Saskatchewan campus to tell listeners about Behind Closed Doors and why people will never forget watching a play in a bathroom! "For everything that we do, if you cared this much - just a couple of centimetres of care - it would make all the difference in the world". Marc Haine Marc Haine and I discuss how small, intentional acts of care can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. From building trust to creating a culture of excellence, this episode is packed with insights on why daring to care just a little bit more matters so much. From his journey in hospitality to leading teams in high-pressure environments, Marc illustrates how intentionality and connection can bridge the gap between mediocrity and excellence. He challenges us all to approach every experience — whether a banquet or a brief conversation — with the same care and dedication. Marc shares a story of Orlando Airport staff handing out free ice cream during a heatwave — an example of how thoughtful gestures, even as small as a scoop of ice cream, can leave a lasting impression. If you've ever wondered how small changes can lead to big impacts, this episode will inspire you to approach interactions with more intentionality and care, no matter the context. Marc Haine is a customer experience expert, keynote speaker, consultant, and author of Lights! Camera! Action! With 35 years of experience in hospitality, retail, and other customer-facing industries, Marc has created unique frameworks to help organizations build lasting connections to become THE brand of choice. This month, the Broadway Theatre is celebrating 30 years as a community owned and operated theatre in Saskatoon which is an achievement worth celebrating. The Broadway is many things to many people. For music lovers, it's a place where they can see their favourite artists and bands in an intimate setting and discover new and emerging talent from across the world. If you love live theatre, then you have no doubt seen the Saskatoon Soaps perform on stage or watched a theatre group perform during the Fringe festival. Movie fans flock to the Broadway for classic films, the best in global cinema and independent Canadian movies. I even dragged my wife with me to see a screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan at the Broadway…an experience I know she is grateful for!For the past 30 years, the Broadway has been a hub of cultural and community events in Saskatoon and the future looks bright for the next 30 thanks to strong leadership, community support and an army of passionate volunteers. I was fortunate to speak with three amazing people who love the Broadway Theatre. Holly Gilroy is the Broadway's Operations Manager, Aryn Otterbein is its Artistic Director and April Sora is a previous board member and passionate volunteer. Together, they cover everything from the joys of working with the community to ensuring the next 30 years are just as successful for the Theatre.Thank you so much for listening to this special bonus episode of the podcast. The Broadway is one of my favourite places in Saskatoon and we are really lucky to have such a hub for community events in our city. Cheers...Eric
Brendan Bradley is an actor and storyteller who got into real-time animation systems and social VR during the pandemic, and then starting putting on live theatre shows in Virtual Reality both onsite, hybrid, and in-venue, and fully virtual. He co-founded OnBoardXR, which has been embracing accessible technology like WebXR and social VR via Mozilla Hubs, which has enabled his immersive shows to be available on mobile phones, tablets, PCs, and virtual reality headsets. Since the beginning, OnBoardXR has featured projects that have integrated AI systems for generating scripts, and most recently Bradley put on a show called Degenerate VR featuring generative AI images that audience members within a social VR context were able to prompt. Bradley takes more of a skeptical take on AI deconstructing the current state of generative AI in relation to human labor and creativity as well as some of the potentials and perils of the technology. OnBoardXR has been on the forefront of integrating open web and immersive technologies for live performance, and is pushing forward on what's possible in immersive and interactive theatre. There is an experimental and avant-garde vibe to most of the shows I've attended, and AI has been thematically integrating into many of the recent segments. I had a chance to break it all down with Bradley at AWE, and we brainstorm a bit more on how generative AI could help facilitate group conversations and explorations on specific topics as long as there is a deliberate invitation or incisive question provided to the audience. There's a lot of potential for how some of these AI technologies could facilitate novel social social dynamics and interactions (see Frankenstein AI at Sundance 2019 and their subsequent AI-facilitated group discussions at DocLab 2019). What a show we have tonight!! We have real admiration for Artistic Talent AND we also like Wine! Well tonight we have a PRO in both fields! Annie Edgerton has spent over twenty years in the wine business, performing wine appraisals for hundreds of clients, assisting with wine auctions, and combining her effervescent nature as a performer with her wine expertise as a host of various wine programs. Yes, she is an Actor as well! She has performed in Broadway productions of "Kinky Boots" and "Mama Mia", had recurring roles in "Pretty little liars", "City on a hill" and "Party Girl" just to name a few. All of this while starring in dozens of other off Broadway shows such as "Elf", "King Lear" and "Legally Blonde"…oh and did I mention that she has also performed the National Anthem for 28 MLB teams and she speaks 9 languages!…its hard to believe that this is really just one person. We were thrilled to have her on the show, we talked about her Sophies choice between Wine and Live Theatre, the fertile ground of "Bean soup", she shares her opinion on people who perform improv, the historical significance of the Hampton Playhouse, the undeniable power of Karaoke, the best Live Music concert(s) she has ever seen, she graciously provides her mount Rushmore of wine, which two MLB ball parks are playing hard to get (their loss!), the art of spotting Fake Wine, the opulence of Mad Dog 20/20, her current "go to" glass of wine, she generously provides a Cheat Sheet for finding a good bottle (great advice) and she reveals her Deserted island Broadway Show among many other very important topics! Check her out at annieedgerton.com and on instagram @wineminxannie thank you so much for coming on the show and we hope you enjoyed the conversation as much as we did! #wineminx, #hamptonplayhouse, #maddog2020, #Sting, #MLB, #portsmouth, #karaoke, #Hamilton, #wine, #Elf, #broadway
In the second episode of our Creative Nonfiction Film podcast season, Sophie Fiennes discusses The Four Quartets and how she approaches documenting live performance on screen. In The Four Quartets, she captures the stage play of the same name, directed by and starring her brother, actor Ralph Fiennes. For the production, Ralph Fiennes adapted the T.S. Eliot poem for the stage — which was never originally intended to be performed that way — and then toured this production around the UK in 2021. Sophie Fiennes's film of The Four Quartets is neither live capture nor a full adaptation of the play. Instead, Fiennes remarkably documents the theatre production on screen, maintaining all the original lighting and blocking. Her choices of framing and camera movement really puts us in the black box theatre with Ralph Fiennes. Unlike most recorded theatre, where there is a constant sense of information loss, Sophie Fiennes gives us a sense of the theatrical space so we get a better sense of what we're missing when we're missing it. It's built into Sophie Fiennes's direction. Sophie Fiennes discusses Ralph Fiennes's production, the challenges of documenting the play on screen, and how working with Declan Donnellan of Cheek by Jowl just before she shot The Four Quartets changed how she thinks about acting and theatre. What's good about live theatre? We dive in with the cast of Happy Birthday McKenna to find out the backstage happenings, the onstage process, auditioning, rehearsing, how Covid changed everything and what happens when the power goes completely out on show night. McKenna was my first new show in 19 years and to quote the character of Julie, 'We had a time.' So come have a time with us as the curtain rises for this brand new episode.
One of my all-time favorite movies as a child was Anastasia. From the story to the soundtrack, the characters, and the costumes, it was a magical play on what happened to the youngest Romanov daughter, Anastasia. That's why, when I found out the Broadway musical was making its way down to Florida, I jumped at the chance to see it. The musical was playing at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida. Ruth Eckerd Hall is a performing arts hall including all sorts of events, from Broadway musicals like Anastasia to comedy shows and concerts for adults and children. With a bar in the front, VIP rooms, and the England Family Musical Garden, Ruth Eckerd Hall is the perfect venue for a date night, a girl's night, or fun for the entire family. When you walk into the hall, there is a full service bar that includes liquor, wine, and local, import and craft beers. If you are hungry, you can grab pizza, a hot dog, popcorn, soft pretzels, candy, chips, a soda, and water at the many concession stands around the hall. The hall even includes Pre-show Party Packages for $29 per person and a Breakfast Brunch Buffet for $25 a person. The staff was so friendly, and one kind lady even spent her evening taking pictures of guests by the spectacular white Christmas tree. Even parking was easy, and there was not too great of a hassle to get out after the show. Some upcoming must-see shows are The Blue Man Group (February 2 -3), Sarah McLachlan (February 26), Riverdance VIP Add-On (January 17 - January 19), Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit (January 20), John Mellencamp (February 13 - February 15), Dancing With The Stars: Live! (February 18), A Carpenters Tribute (March 19), Steve Miller Band (March 23), Johnny Mathis (March 25), TFO: Harry Potter vs. Star Wars (March 19), On Your Feet! (April 7 - April 8), TFO: Spring in Paris (April 12), Postmodern Jukebox (April 15), Styx 2023 Tour with Don Felder (April 17), Cats (April 23), Steve Martin & Martin Short (April 28).All in all, our "Once Upon a December" experience was magical, and we will most definitely be back.
Does live, local theatre still have a place in the modern world? What does it have to offer that the streaming services don't? I'm joined by Tysha Calhoun, who has worn All The Hats at the Gaslight-Baker Theatre in Lockhart, Texas, to address this fundamental question. Today's guests are the epitome of what this podcast is all about: CREATIVE REVOLUTIONARY SUPERSTARS… who are just as hard on themselves as the rest of us! CJ Baran & Benjamin Romans created the show CAGES – an indescribable “genre-busting game changer” (LA Times) that left audiences in awe at its premiere… MYSELF INCLUDED! Masterfully weaving state-of-the-art video and animation with live performance and original songs that pulse with an addictive pop energy, CAGES pulls out all the stops to conjure a rock opera musical for the modern age. These two creative overachievers wrote the story, the music, directed, and choreographed the piece – CJ even played the lead! And just like any creative expression, the show started as an itty-bitty baby idea that paid off big time when they decided they would never settle for less than the art they want to see. ← not easy when you are creating a dystopian, B&W gothic world in a live, stage performance! When I invited CJ to the show, he wrote: My entire life has been living in the void between creating art that I believe will move people while also trying to make a living at it. ← perhaps the most Brian Breaks Character thing anyone has ever said! I couldn't be more delighted to share this episode with you: I just know you'll love hearing from these two fiercely committed, honest, and authentic artists who make FUTURE THEATRE. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! If you loved this episode, please subscribe and leave an honest review. Your review helps boost the show and gives us the chance to help more creatives get out of suffering for their art and into action. Bill Paterson is a founding member of the 7:84 company established by John McGrath, his wife Elizabeth and her brother to create radical, popular theatre. Fusing techniques popularised by Bertolt Brecht with Scottish performance traditions, their best-known play The Cheviot, the Stag, and the Black, Black Oil (1973) explored class struggle, the clearing of the Scottish highlands and the impact of drilling for oil. With energy in the news again, and the resurgence of political theatre on the British stage - Anne McElvoy looks at the writing of John McGrath with Bill Paterson, theatre critic Joyce McMillan and Joe Douglas, who directed a successful revival of the play for the National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Theatre and Live Theatre which toured Scotland in 2019 and 2020.
