Talking Heads - a Gardening Podcast
Ep. 272 - Mid-July is the mid point of the summer season where the garden is in full summer garb, long-hot days and lots of pruning, watering and dead heading occurs, but forget all that and get the BBQ out!

Summer in 2025 is here - and after one of the sunniest and driest Springs on record, we enter the long days and sultry nights with the garden looking glorious but always looking to the horizon for a little bit of rain to keep things looking green and lush. Herbaceous borders are set to maximum colour, vegetable beds seem to multiply in growth weekly and the gardeners tan is ever present. So enjoy the long summer days, take some time to appreciate time in your garden and join the Talking Heads pair as they continue to look after the spaces they are in charge of, as well as enjoying their gardens at home. The third UK summer heatwave is occurring, with summers getting warmer and drier - especially noticeable in Saul's usually much wetter county of Devon, this means a lot of plants need a little extra TLC to get them looking at their best. Lucy in dry Essex is, however, extremely used to these conditions and gives us a few hints and tips on plants to grow in the dry. Also a lot of pruning going on including the topiary, so appropriately the Henchman Topiary Awards have been announced - with some fantastical animals being created by artful pruning. However, forget all this because this weekend it's all about the BBQ - so enjoy your garden in the best way possible with grilled veggies and a banger or two!LinkedIn link:Saul WalkerInstagram link:Lucy lucychamberlaingardensIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Support the show

The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival (SVMF) has been a staple of summer entertainment in the Valley for over six decades, and this year is no different. Janet Michael, host of ‘The Valley Today,' sat down with Dennis Lynch, SVMF's Executive Director, to discuss the exciting lineup and community impact of the festival. The conversation, filled with insights and anecdotes, sheds light on what attendees can expect from this season's performances. Recording from the corporate headquarters in Woodstock, Janet and Dennis kicked off their discussion by highlighting the festival's rich history and vibrant community presence. Founded to present symphonic music back in 1963, the festival has since expanded to include a diverse array of genres, becoming a cultural cornerstone. Dennis, reflecting on the longevity and evolution of SVMF, emphasized the importance of community and the festival's nonprofit status. Maintaining such a heartfelt, community-centered approach ensures the festival remains a cherished event for locals and visitors alike. This year's lineup is designed to appeal to a broad audience, with performances spanning classic rock, Motown, Irish folk, symphonic tributes, and more. Highlights include Grand Funk Railroad on July 25th delivering their quintessential American rock hits, and the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra's big band swing music on July 26th, commemorating the end of World War II. The festival also promises some unique experiences such as free guitar workshops and swing dance lessons, enhancing the immersive, community-oriented atmosphere. These 'Easter eggs,' as Dennis calls them, offer festival-goers more than just music—they present opportunities to engage and connect. The Motortown All Stars will bring the soulful sounds of Motown to the Valley, while Gaelic Storm promises a night of high-energy Irish music. The latter, known for their performance in the film Titanic, will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact. Alongside them, the Screaming Orphans, an Irish band of four sisters, will add to the evening's rustic charm. As the festival gears up for another thrilling season, the excitement is palpable. With performances from the Bacon Brothers and the classic sounds of Shenandoah wrapping up the festival, there's something for every music lover. Tickets and accommodation packages are available on the festival's official website, musicfest.org. Whether you're a long-time attendee or a newcomer, the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival offers an unmatched blend of music, community, and scenic beauty. As Dennis and Janet aptly put it—buy your tickets early and often, and don't miss the chance to be part of this cherished summer experience. For those interested in more than just the music, the festival's website provides a treasure trove of information about past performances, artists, and, of course, ticket details.

In this episode of The Skeptical Shaman podcast, host Rachel White (of TOTEM Readings), chats with the totally awesome Kaity Craven of the Moonflower Moments YouTube Channel. Kaity is the rare practitioner that actually makes quality tarot deck, oracle deck, and "how to" divinatory content on YouTube-- without making it all about herself, brand deals, or the overdone same old, same old permeating an already overly saturated social media landscape littered with useless noise.Rachel and Kaity discuss life as professional card readers and psychics, as well as their respective gardening and herbalism work in the strangely magical American South (Rachel lives in Texas, Kaity in Louisiana). To this end, Kaity shares a very cool and super easy to execute herbal "spell jar" recipe that we can all use in this Summer Season! Please note: TOTEM is running a Review Raffle through 6/26/25, so if you feel compelled to review The Skeptical Shaman podcast, TOTEM Readings, TOTEM Flower Essences, or either of the TOTEM Decks (links below), email her a screenshot to enter to win one of three Grand Prizes: rachel@totemreadings.com. Rachel's LINKS:Rachel's Website: https://www.totemreadings.comTOTEM Readings Substack: https://totemrach.substack.comRachel's Other Links: https://linktr.ee/totemrachOur Sponsors' LINKS:The TOTEM Flower Essence Deck: https://a.co/d/gw16LsGThe TOTEM Tarot Deck: https://www.amazon.com/TOTEM-Tarot-Deck-Rachel-White/dp/0578980126The TOTEM Flower Essences: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TotemReadingsATXTOTEM Spiritual Transformation Coaching: https://www.totemreadings.com/coachingTOTEM Business of Woo Mentoring: https://www.totemreadings.com/business-of-wooKaity's Links: YouTube: https://youtube.com/@moonflowermoments?si=X6F1BydhdqlpyLaSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/themoonflowermomentsPlease note: The views and opinions expressed on The Skeptical Shaman do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast.
