Leadership LIVE @ 8:05! Podcast - Talking Small Business

The Joy of Closing is covered in this podio, along with the following subjects: - Critical advanced sales skills for professional growth - Steps and strategies that salespeople can take to improve their current skill set - Common barriers to effective selling *************************************** Understanding the importance of closing deals can make a significant difference in achieving success in sales. The knowledge gap between individuals with advanced sales skills and those without can be a key factor in hindering individual success. Those with advanced skills are often adept at recognizing the right moments to close a deal, understanding client needs, and building strong relationships that lead to successful outcomes. On the other hand, individuals lacking these skills may struggle to effectively navigate the closing process, resulting in missed opportunities and stalled deals. I'll be talking with Bob King about The Joy of Closing. BOB KING literally wrote the book on closing, it's called THE JOY OF CLOSING: The Definitive Guide to Building Trust, Getting the Deal and Creating Happy Customers. Bob is an author, closing coach, filmmaker, and sales superstar who consults with sales teams and sales professionals of all types—from retail to in-home sales to business-to-business—bringing One-Call Magic to pitches, curing slumps, boosting team performance, and turning total strangers into happy customers, often at the very first meeting. His directorial debut, Psycho Beach Party, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was still on the staff favorites shelf when the last video rental store was shut down. Bob has won numerous awards from various employers, including “Sales Star of the Year” many years running at his current job.

The 1980s might not seem like a decade conducive to the emergence of a groundbreaking gay theatre. However, amidst the AIDS pandemic and a homophobic backlash to the gains of the post-Stonewall era, Charles Busch and Kenneth Elliott created something unique in New York City. The company that they founded, Theatre-in-Limbo, developed some of the biggest underground hits of the 80s, with unforgettable titles like Vampire Lesbians of Sodom and Psycho Beach Party. Now Elliott is out with a new book: Beyond Ridiculous: Making Gay Theatre with Charles Busch in 1980s New York. It tells the story of Theatre-in-Limbo and makes a case for its underappreciated importance.

Born in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey, Vaughn grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey, outside Philadelphia.[2][3] At age 6, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy record and forever changed his life. He started playing the drums in a garage band when he was 12, then transitioned to the guitar. After school, he would go to a local department store, where he would borrow the guitars and practice over chord sheets.[4] He attended Audubon High School.[1]In 1983, he formed the Ben Vaughn Combo. The band was together for five years, releasing two albums and touring the U.S. several times. They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazines as well as video airplay on MTV. The attention inspired Marshall Crenshaw to record Vaughn's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)" for his Downtown album. Vaughn embarked on a solo career in 1988, recording several critically acclaimed albums, touring extensively in Europe and the U.S., and receiving more MTV exposure. During that period he produced three records for the Elektra Records American Explorer series (Memphis rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, Muscle Shoals country soul singer Arthur Alexander) and recorded "Cubist Blues" a collaboration with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton. He also scored two films (Favorite Mopar and Wild Girl's Go-Go Rama), as well as appeared as a frequent guest commentator on nationally syndicated radio shows Fresh Air and World Cafe. In 1995, Vaughn moved to L.A. and released "Instrumental Stylings," an album of instrumentals in a variety of styles. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. That '70s Show soon followed, and for the next ten years, Vaughn would provide music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots (Men Behaving Badly, Normal, Ohio, Grounded for Life). He also provided scores for several films (Psycho Beach Party, The Independent, Scorpion Spring) and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the Swingers soundtrack CD). Support the Show. It's Rock 'n' Roll Fridays!FacebookYoutubeInstagramWebsite Got a Great Musical Story? That campy theatrical spoof was followed by Psycho Beach Party and Pardon My Inquisition, or, Kiss the Blood off My Castanets. Busch also appeared in the TV show Oz where he plays a cross- dressing homosexual who smothers his Mafia cellmate. When it comes to playing male roles, Busch says he's nothing great. It's when he puts on gowns and wigs that his imagination really takes flight. We talk about glamorous wigs and how Busch made money as a sex worker before he became an overnight sensation on stage. “Now What?” is produced with help from Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Charles Busch, Award-Winning Playwright and Drag Performer, Author, “Leading Lady: A Memoir of a Most Unusual Boy”About Harvey's guest:Today's guest, Charles Busch, occupies a unique and highly acclaimed place in the world of entertainment.   He's a playwright, actor, director, novelist, cabaret performer and drag legend, whose characters evoke the great cinematic actresses of the golden age of Hollywood.   As a young man, his ambition was to have his own theatrical troupe, and write camp, movie-inspired comedies in which he could play the leading lady in drag.  and that he did.   He's written and starred in over 25 plays including “The Divine Sister”, “The Lady in Question”, “Red Scare on Sunset”, “The Tribute Artist”, “The Confession of Lily Dare”, and one of my all time favourites, “Pardon my Inquisition or Kiss the Blood Off my Castanets”, starring our guest in the dual roles of the tempestuous spitfire prostitute Maria Garbanzo and her look-alike, the tragic noblewoman the Marquesa del Drago.  And I can't resist mentioning his hilariously camp and heartwarming classic Christmas show, “Times Square Angel”, which has been performed annually for over 30 years.    But there can be no question that in the world of theatre, our guest is best known for 2 of his hit plays: “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom”, which is one of the longest running plays in the history of Off-Broadway; and his smash long-running Broadway hit, “The Tale of the Allergist's Wife”, which earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play, and won our guest the Outer Circle Critics' Award for playwrighting.    He also wrote and starred in the film versions of his plays, “Psycho Beach Party” and “Die Mommie Die”, which won him the Best Performance Award at the Sundance Film Festival.  He also directed the film, “A Very Serious Person” starring Polly Bergen, which won an honorable mention at the Tribeca Film Festival.   On television, for two seasons, he appeared as “Nat Ginzburg” on the highly acclaimed HBO series “OZ”.   He's a well-respected expert in film and theatre history, and he's appeared as a guest programmer and in numerous documentaries for Turner Classic Movies, and he's lectured and conducted master classes at many colleges and universities throughout America.   He's a 2-time MAC award winner, and in 2003, he received a special Drama Desk Award for career achievement as both performer and playwright.  He also received the Flora Roberts Award for Sustained Achievement in the Theatre by the Dramatists' Guild.   He is also the subject of the acclaimed documentary film “The Lady in Question is Charles Busch”.  And his CD, “Charles Busch Live at Feinstein's 54 Below”, is one of the best cabaret albums out there - an absolute joy from beginning to end.     As an author, he wrote an auto-biographical novel in 1995 entitled, “Whores of Lost Atlantis”.   And now, finally, he's released his captivating, witty, insightful and poignant memoir entitled, “Leading Lady: A Memoir of a Most Unusual Boy”, in which he recounts a life as a trailblazer, lived with authenticity and purpose. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Charles Busch, go to:https://www.charlesbusch.com/https://www.facebook.com/charlesbusch.page https://www.instagram.com/chasbusch/  #CharlesBusch   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

It's Pride month and we are looking at two really fun movies written by and starring the iconic Charles Busch! We start off with "Psycho Beach Party" from 2000 which is a mash-up of the old beach party movies from the 50's and 60's combined with a bit of the "teens running amok" films, but with all of that projected through a modern lens and presented in a campy, tongue-in-cheek send up of all those genres. The campiness continues with our second film, 2003's "Die Mommie Die" which has Busch in the lead role as Angela Arden, a faded chanteuse with a very problematic family. The cast for this one is amazing and it is pure entertainment from beginning to end. We highly recommend both and they're streaming for free on YouTube and Tubi! We then ramble through a list of other things we've seen. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. PLOT: Robert Lee King directs this manic party-mix of 50's psychological thrillers, 60's beach movies, and 70's slasher films. Teenager Florence Forrest (Lauren Ambrose) is determined to learn to surf and earns the nickname 'Chicklet' from the local surfer guys. However, Chicklet begins displaying multiple personalities, experiences inexplicable blackouts, and fears that she might be responsible for a series of mysterious murders in her beachside town. The deaths are investigated by Captain Monica Stark (Charles Busch), who also suspects Chicklet's mother (Beth Broderick), her best friend Berdine (Danni Wheeler), surfing guru Kanaka (Thomas Gibson), and B-movie actress Bettina Barnes (Kimberley Davis). “I've been blessed with a somewhat pragmatic view, and I had a good sense of who I was and what I had to offer.” Charles Busch has been around a while… and in the meantime. He is one of the first self-producers and self-advocates in the industry. Since he was eleven, he was writing three act places and found out very early at Northwestern that he would not find success in mainstream showbusiness. “Too gay” for the industry in the 70's he says… so maybe the things that made him uncastable and unemployable could actually be what brings him success.  Even after going to an incredible acting program, Busch still didn't feel he was able to find himself in the industry. He sold numerous pilots to networks, but still found himself back to putting on a show with people he loves. And sometimes even finding himself in places at the top of the food chain (like writing a book for a new musical) and saying to himself, “I really hate this!” And yes, we talk about Taboo, one of Broadway's biggest flops. We also talk about his huge success on Broadway, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife.  Charles also takes us down discovery lane as he found his love of drag, cabaret, a symbiotic relationship with his beloved manager, taking the road less traveled, and the upcoming 54 Below show, Backstage Babble, which he'll be appearing in on September 6th at 7pm.  Charles Busch has forged a unique place in the world of entertainment as playwright, actor, director, novelist, cabaret performer and drag icon. He is the author and star of over twenty-five plays including The Divine Sister, The Lady in Question, Red Scare on Sunset, The Tribute Artist, The Confession of Lily Dare and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom; one of the longest running plays in the history of Off-Broadway. In 2003, Mr. Busch received a special Drama Desk Award for career achievement as both performer and playwright and was given a star on the Playwrights Walk outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre. He is also the subject of the acclaimed documentary film The Lady in Question is Charles Busch. He is a two-time MAC award winner and has performed his cabaret act in many cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, London, Paris, Barcelona and New York. Zig at the gig podcasts

Ben Vaughn On Zig At The Gig Ben Vaughn grew up in the Philadelphia area on the New Jersey side of the river. At age 6, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy record and forever changed his life. In 1983, he formed the Ben Vaughn Combo. The band was together five years, releasing two albums and touring the U.S. several times. They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazine and video airplay on MTV. The attention inspired Marshall Crenshaw to record Ben's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)" for his "Downtown" album. Ben embarked on a solo career in 1988, recording several critically acclaimed albums, touring extensively in Europe and the U.S. and receiving more MTV exposure. During that period he produced three records for the Elektra Records American Explorer series (Memphis rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, Muscle Shoals country soul singer Arthur Alexander) and recorded "Cubist Blues," a collaboration with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton. He also scored two films ("Favorite Mopar" and "Wild Girl's Go-Go Rama"), as well as appearing as a frequent guest commentator on nationally syndicated radio shows “Fresh Air” and "World Cafe." In 1995, Ben moved to L.A. and released "Instrumental Stylings," an album of instrumentals in a variety of styles. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom "3rd Rock From The Sun." "That 70s Show" soon followed, and for the next ten years Ben would provide award-winning music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots ("Men Behaving Badly," "Normal, Ohio," "Grounded For Life"). He also provided scores for several films ("Psycho Beach Party," "The Independent," "Scorpion Spring") and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the "Swingers" soundtrack CD). Somehow Ben found time to create the legendary "Rambler '65." Recorded entirely in his car, this much-publicized album (and subsequent short film) is still considered by many to be a classic document of a man and his dream. Since then, Ben has released “Designs In Music," “Vaughn Sings Vaughn Vols. 1-3,” “Texas Road Trip” (recorded in Austin, Texas with Doug Sahm's band) , "Five By Five" and "Piece de Resistance" by the Ben Vaughn Quintet and the solo acoustic album, “Imitation Wood Grain And Other Folk Songs.” Add to that an Italian dance hit (a DJ re-mix of “Hey Romeo”), airplay of “Jerry Lewis in France” on Bob Dylan's radio show (complete with Dylan's recitation of Ben's resume), and two recent tours in France and you're looking at what continues to be a very interesting career. Occasionally, Ben takes a break from his syndicated radio show (“The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn”) to perform live in the US and Europe. The dates are randomly planned so catch him while you can!
