11/5/25 - Teresa Helena Higginson (1844‑1905), born in Holywell, Wales, spent her life as a humble schoolteacher while living a remarkable hidden sanctity. From her childhood in a devout Catholic family to her work in schools across Wigan, Bootle, and Edinburgh, she quietly bore suffering, illness, and the challenges of teaching with unwavering faith. On Good Friday 1874, she received the first of her mystical stigmata (bleeding wounds in her hands and feet), and experienced repeated ecstasies in which she shared in the Passion of Christ. Teresa also promoted a deep devotion to the "Sacred Head of Jesus, Seat of Divine Wisdom." Declared "Servant of God" in 1937, her life shows the extraordinary ways holiness can exist in ordinary daily work, patient suffering, and total union with Christ.

William D. Higginson: A Canadian Surrealist Visionary William D. Higginson is a Canadian surrealist painter whose evocative works have captivated audiences worldwide. A professional artist since 2007, Higginson explores a vast array of mediums and genres, creating pieces that resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels. His art is held in private collections across the globe and has been featured in numerous prestigious solo exhibitions. Notable showcases include sellout shows at The Space An Art Gallery (2023 and 2017), The Chali Rosso Art Gallery (2019, alongside works by Salvador Dalí), and The Vancouver Club (2016). Higginson's accolades highlight his exceptional talent: he claimed 1st place in the Surrealize International Art Competition (2022), two consecutive Golden Brush First Place awards (2011 and 2012), and an Award of Excellence from the Canadian Federation of Artists (2011). These accomplishments are a testament to his skill, vision, and dedication to his craft. His life story is as compelling as his art. Diagnosed with life-threatening liver failure and leukemia at age 11, Higginson spent three years confronting his mortality. During his hospital stay, a request for pencils and paper marked the beginning of a profound artistic journey. “Living with such conditions changes your perspective on life,” Higginson reflects. This early brush with mortality informs much of his work, often blending humor, surrealism, and deeply personal revelations. Beyond his individual achievements, Higginson has made a significant impact on the art community. As the owner of Impressions Live Art since 2007, he pioneered live painting performances, bringing art to audiences in dynamic and interactive ways. He co-founded Direct2Artist, a global initiative supporting thousands of artists in over 80 countries, and served as its Community Director (2013–2019). His roles as Membership Chair for the Federation of Canadian Artists (2013–2016) and Owner/Operator of Art Battle Vancouver (2013–2014) underscore his commitment to fostering artistic talent and community. Higginson's artistic philosophy centers on emotional engagement and introspection. “My dreams and imagination conjure imagery that I forever strive to render as clear on canvas as in my mind,” he says. This relentless pursuit of creative excellence has made his work a source of inspiration for collectors, art enthusiasts, and aspiring artists alike. Whether mentoring young talents or refining his own craft, Higginson's passion for art remains unyielding. His journey from hospital bed to international acclaim is a testament to the transformative power of creativity and perseverance. This Day in Legal History: Joseph H. Rainey Sworn in to U.S. House of RepresentativesOn December 12, 1870, Joseph H. Rainey was sworn in as the first Black member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Born into slavery in South Carolina in 1832, Rainey and his family gained their freedom when his father purchased their emancipation. Rainey became a successful businessman and returned to the United States after living in Bermuda during the Civil War. During the Reconstruction era, he was elected to Congress as a representative for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, where he served until 1879.In Congress, Rainey was a vocal advocate for civil rights, emphasizing the need for laws to protect Black citizens from discrimination and violence. He supported the Enforcement Acts, which aimed to curb the activities of groups like the Ku Klux Klan, and championed education and economic opportunities for freedmen. Rainey's tenure was marked by his resilience in the face of racism and his efforts to uphold the principles of equality during a tumultuous period in American history. Also on this day in 1787, Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. This significant decision was instrumental in encouraging other states to adopt the Constitution, ensuring the establishment of a unified federal government. Pennsylvania's ratification, occurring just five days after Delaware's, helped build momentum for the creation of the United States as a constitutional republic. Both events reflect crucial turning points in American history: one symbolizing progress in representation and civil rights, the other laying the foundational framework of the nation's governance. Together, they highlight the evolving journey of equality and democracy in the United States. The Biden administration has advised the U.S. Supreme Court to avoid taking up cases brought by oil companies and Republican-led states aimed at blocking state and local climate change lawsuits. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar urged the Court to decline appeals from oil companies challenging a Hawaii Supreme Court decision that permits Honolulu to sue major fossil fuel companies for allegedly deceiving the public about climate change. She also recommended rejecting efforts by 19 Republican-led states to prevent Democratic-led states from pursuing similar lawsuits. Prelogar argued that the oil companies' constitutional claims are still being addressed in lower courts and that the Republican-led states lack standing to block lawsuits that target private companies. She dismissed the argument that the lawsuits attempt to regulate emissions—a federal issue—stating the claims do not conflict with federal common law on air pollution. The Republican-led states contend that the Democratic-led lawsuits improperly attempt to regulate global emissions via state courts. These cases involve prominent oil companies such as Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and Shell, as well as multiple state governments. The Supreme Court's conservative majority had earlier sought the solicitor general's opinion on these matters. The cases reflect ongoing legal battles over the intersection of state-level climate accountability and federal jurisdiction.US Supreme Court should avoid climate change cases, Biden administration says | ReutersThe Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals struck down Nasdaq's board diversity rules, reversing a prior SEC-approved mandate requiring Nasdaq-listed companies to diversify their boards or explain why they could not. The 9-8 decision emphasized that the SEC lacked the authority to enforce such requirements under the 1934 Securities Exchange Act, which primarily governs fair trading practices. The regulations, implemented in 2023, required companies to include at least one woman, minority, or LGBTQ+ board member and disclose diversity metrics annually. Conservative groups, led by figures such as Edward Blum, argued that these rules exceeded the SEC's legal scope, ultimately persuading the majority of Republican-appointed judges. Writing for the majority, Judge Andrew Oldham stated that diversity disclosures are not an ethical or customary obligation in securities trade. The dissenting opinion, authored by Judge Stephen Higginson and supported by a mix of Democratic and Republican-appointed judges, argued that the SEC had acted within its authority. Higginson contended that market forces, not judicial intervention, should resolve disputes over the desirability of diversity disclosures. Despite disagreement, Nasdaq has announced it will not appeal the ruling, while the SEC is reviewing the decision. For much more context than I could ever provide, I would encourage a perusal of the excellent Professor Ann Lipton's Mastodon thread breaking down some of the tacit and overt shifts, like the overall reorientation of securities laws to be solely about preventing fraud and the jettisoning of other goals, like accurate pricing.Nasdaq Board Diversity Rules Struck Down by Fifth Circuit (2)Fifth Circuit Strikes the NASDAQ Diversity RuleThe U.S. Justice Department has urged a federal appeals court to reject TikTok's emergency bid to block a law requiring its parent company, ByteDance, to divest the app by January 19 or face a nationwide ban. TikTok argued in its filing that the law could effectively shut down the platform, which has over 170 million U.S. users. The Justice Department countered that Chinese control of TikTok remains a national security risk, emphasizing that the ban is a necessary precaution. If implemented, the ban would not immediately stop users from accessing TikTok but would eventually render the app unusable due to restrictions on support and updates. A panel of judges upheld the law last week, and TikTok has since appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The companies hope a delay would allow time for the incoming Trump administration to determine its stance, as President-elect Donald Trump has stated he opposes a TikTok ban. This ruling affirms the U.S. government's broad authority to regulate or ban foreign-owned apps over national security and data privacy concerns, echoing previous legal challenges involving WeChat. TikTok's fate now hinges on whether Biden grants a 90-day extension of the divestment deadline and on the Trump administration's next steps.US asks court to reject TikTok's bid to stave off law that could ban the app | Reuters This is a public episode. The expression ‘Going Native' emerged as a result of the meeting of European and indigenous cultures and drew its strength from the perceived differences between those cultures. The term refers to the desire of non-aboriginals to identify with, behave or live like the local people and immerse themselves in native culture. Enjoy this Encore Presentation! Ladies and gentlemen and whoever else is listening, once again, welcome back to the program. I have two special guests today. They are Elizabeth Allen and Ellie Higginson, former and current Utah State cheer champions from Salem Hills High School. They reveal the not-so-secret world behind the scenes of competitive cheer teams. It's a grueling level of physical, emotional and mental commitment to be the best in state several times over. Plus the sisterhood created by a shared love of the sport has bonded these girls as life-long friends. Full disclosure. Your humble host was a cheerleader at Utah State University back in 1991 so I get to chime in with my similar experiences and perspectives. #SHHS #SalemHighSchool #SalemHighSchoolCheer #CheerSisterhood #MoreThanLipstick #UtahStateCheerChampions #NotMeanGirls

Do you remember "scoliosis check" during middle school? That embarrassing moment where, as a 12/13 year old, you had to do a shirtless forward fold in front of the school nurse?? MORTIFYING. Perhaps you never had to live through this torture. Or perhaps, even WORSE, you were told by said nurse that your screen was POSITIVE, and now your parents had to know! And they would have to *gasp* take you to the doctor to DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN! Nightmare! Well, thankfully we've come a long way since then! And today we have insights from TWO guests in the world of scoliosis to educate us! We invited our friend and colleague, Chris DeWald, MD, who between him and his father, have over 60 years of experience treating scoliosis patients. Dr. DeWald is an orthopedic spine surgeon at Rush University Medical Center, who specializes in spine deformity, and is legit one of the kindest people on the planet :) And to add a different dimension, we asked Lauren Higginson, the founder of Higgy Bears, and a scoliosis patient herself, to give her insights into living with this condition, the observations she has from her community and her thoughts on screening. You may be met with a twists and turns in life (or in your spine), either way we are here for you :) Thanks for tuning in, folks! Please sign up for our "PULSE CHECK" monthly newsletter! The 5-7-5 syllable format is not respected by all haiku enthusiasts. It took me 5 years of laboring away in private before I seriously began studying the centuries long history and learned how much of a rookie I really was in this poetic form. Now, for example, I tune in to a podcast about haiku called “Poetry Pea” (that is pea as in p-e-a, please don't ask me where the name originated). The British moderator, recording from her home in Switzerland, conducts lively conversations with guests from around the world. It's not as pretentious as it sounds. I appreciate the haiku that are submitted for analysis and judged for publication in the Poetry Pea journal. I encourage you to check it out if you have an interest in learning more about haiku. I was listening to the highlighted haiku on a recent Poetry Pea episode and counted out the syllables on my fingertips. 11 syllables, 10, 12, 12, oh…. there's a 14 syllable one. Nothing came close to 17. It is clear that professionals in the artform of haiku are not incredibly fond of the 5-7-5 arrangement. In Japan where haiku originated hundreds of years ago, they traditionally stay consistent with 17 onji. While they contain similarities, the Japanese onji and English syllable do have significant differences. Onji normally represent a much shorter sound compared to an English syllable. By an academic analysis that I read, 17 onji actually average closer to 12 English syllables. I discovered this comparison of the two languages in a book published in 1985 called the Haiku Handbook by William Higginson and Penny Harter. Obviously, this notion of the differences in syllables has been well documented for a long time. This is the primary rationale why most professionals limit their syllable count. However, in popular culture, everyone will gladly agree with you when you confidently remember the 5-7-5 standard format. Haiku are the de facto elementary school introductory poetic form - inspiring the kind of school work that sentimental parents often keep to embarrass their kids at high school graduations. For young writers who are introduced to the notion of syllables at a young age, haiku could nearly be considered a bridge between math and phonetics. Since it doesn't take much time to finish your assignment, no wonder it is so appreciated and remembered by students! Who wants to remember the more complicated standards of limericks, acrostics, and kennings?I think many adults have come to consider haiku child's play - while they may remember with fondness the introduction of haiku as a young student and the fun notion that they had a quick portal into Japanese culture for a moment, it is largely dismissed. Often in an elementary English unit, haiku will be introduced along with other forms of poetry and then steamrolled by the Shakespearian sonnet - which is often considered “real poetry” because of its English heritage, complexity, length, and rhyming schemes. But I challenge that assumption. The brevity of the haiku is its beauty. A great haiku can stand alone, with few words doing the work, giving the reader a space to contemplate, compare to their own experiences, and appreciate the beauty and delicacy of the subject matter. In communication, we are often told that less is more. Haiku has helped me to quiet my thoughts, concentrate on the small things, write shorter emails, become a better conversationalist, and look for natural moments of beauty all around me. It has taught me how to look and listen with more acuity for beauty. Back to the 5-7-5. I was well into utilizing my rudimentary understanding of haiku before Higginson and Harter enlightened me on the onji and how it throws a wrench into the assumptions of our school teacher's common practice. I defer to the authors of “The Haiku Handbook” and the many other scholars who long ago made clear that us English speakers are not actually adhering to traditional Japanese haiku by using the same sound count.
In this interview, Mark von Schellwitz, VP Western, Restaurants Canada, discusses how many restaurants in Canada are on the brink of closing because they can't meet the repayment deadline of January 18 for the Canada Emergency Bank Account loan. PRESS RELEASE With just days remaining until the Federal Government enforces the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) loan repayment, Restaurants Canada is urgently calling for a last-minute extension to prevent the devastating consequences facing the food service industry. Despite the best efforts made by Restaurants Canada, the Federal Government has declined to extend the CEBA loan repayment deadline of January 18th, 2024. This decision leaves our members, representing thousands of restaurants across the country, with limited options to avoid bankruptcy and recover from the ongoing financial challenges that arose during the pandemic. A startling survey of the industry reveals that 1 in 5 restaurants with a CEBA loan are now on the brink of closing one or more of their locations. The food service sector has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic lockdowns, enduring the longest lockdown period in North America, which has led to a significant accumulation of debt. Additionally, the foodservice industry operates on traditionally low profit margins, rendering it further vulnerable to external pressures. Recovery in the food service industry has been painfully slow because of several factors beyond the control of restauranteurs, including record-high inflation, the rising cost of food, and labour shortages. We are not asking for a hand-out; we are asking for more time. Currently, a staggering 53% of restaurants are operating at a loss or barely breaking even compared to 10% pre-pandemic, underscoring the obvious connection to this unique and devastating period in our industry and the urgent need for further support and assistance. Kelly Higginson, President, and CEO of Restaurants Canada stated, “People understand that restaurants are part of our social fabric, they are gathering spots to celebrate life's milestones and achievements and the place where friends come to reconnect.” Higginson continued, “Your favourite mom and pop restaurant and local gathering place is at risk. If what the industry is telling us comes to fruition, Canadian communities will lose something very special, simply because of an arbitrary deadline.” Restaurants Canada strongly urges the Federal Government to reconsider their decision and provide an extension to the CEBA loan repayment deadline. Immediate action is essential to prevent further closures and ensure the long-term survival of this critical sector, which contributes significantly to the nation's economy. In the face of these challenges, Restaurants Canada stands firmly with our members and encourages them to visit our website at restaurantscanada.org for guidance on how to navigate this difficult period and learn about available resources. Written and directed by Luke Higginson, RELAX, I'M FROM THE FUTURE tells the story of Casper (Rhys Darby), a time traveller who appears in the present day who's interested in living in the moment. When he meets Holly (Gabrielle Graham), the two begin an almost instant friendship, especially since Casper has the knowledge that she needs to make a quick buck. However, as the two live it up in the present, time has a way of coming calling and they inadvertently change what's ‘supposed to happen'. Suddenly, the future hangs in the balance as they attempt to fix what was broken. In this 1on1, we speak to Higginson about developing the mushy blob of reality and what it means to 'matter'.

Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) has become famous as the man who in 1862 encouraged young contributors to submit to his magazine - and who received in reply four poems from an unknown woman in Amherst, who asked whether he thought her verses were alive. Her name, of course, was Emily Dickinson, and Higginson recognized her genius immediately. But there was more to the Higginson story than just his relationship with one of America's greatest poets. He was also a member of the antislavery group known as "The Secret Six," and during the Civil War, he was colonel of the First South Carolina Volunteers, a regiment consisting of former slaves. In this episode, Jacke takes a look at the two sides of this unassuming but astonishing man. PLUS Jacke is visited by Eve Yohalem and Julie Sternberg (hosts of the podcast Book Dreams), who are working to fund a bookmobile that will deliver free books to children in need this holiday season.
