In a world where adulting seems to dominate every hour of the day—deadlines, responsibilities, bills—it's easy to forget that play isn't just for kids. But when it comes to relationships, a playful spirit might just be the secret ingredient to lasting love.Playfulness in romance isn't about acting childish or dodging serious conversations. It's about injecting joy, curiosity, and spontaneity into the everyday. It's about sharing inside jokes that make no sense to anyone else, laughing at each other's ridiculous impressions, and building a connection that can weather the storms of life by dancing in the rain, metaphorically or literally. What Exactly Is Playfulness in a Relationship?Playfulness is the art of keeping things light. It's not a rejection of maturity but rather a bold commitment to finding joy together. It might look like tickle fights in the kitchen, goofy texts in the middle of the workday, or creating absurd nicknames that only you and your partner could ever understand.Research shows that couples who share these light-hearted moments report higher satisfaction, stronger emotional bonds, and even greater resilience in times of stress. In other words, a well-timed joke or a burst of shared silliness can be just as powerful as a heartfelt conversation.I find in my current relationship, and in relationships in the past, the more we are laughing, the better our relationship is doing. The less laughing, things got worse or they were already bad and we just stopped trying (that's past relationships - we are trying to play all the time in my current relationship). The Science Says: Play Is Serious BusinessPlayfulness might sound like fluff, but psychologists have found that it does some heavy lifting behind the scenes in relationships.According to several studies, playfulness strengthens emotional bonds by creating positive associations. When partners laugh and joke together, their brains release dopamine—the feel-good chemical that enhances connection and trust. It also helps defuse tension during conflict, offering a “reset” button when conversations get heated or misunderstandings pop up.Play also opens up space for creativity in communication. When partners feel safe enough to be silly or spontaneous, they're more likely to approach problems with an open mind and a collaborative spirit. This is critical when you've got kids as they present a challenge into themselves. How to Invite More Play Into Your RelationshipSo how does one actually be more playful in a relationship? It doesn't require a clown suit or a full-time comedy routine. It just takes intention and a willingness to break out of autopilot. Here are a few simple ways to get started:1. Embrace the Art of the Inside Joke Every couple has their own language—those shared references, silly phrases, or code words that trigger a smile or an eye roll. Cultivate those. They create a sense of intimacy that feels like a shared secret.2. Create Micro-Moments of Fun You don't need to book a weekend getaway to bring in some levity. Make funny faces across the dinner table. Add a ridiculous twist to your daily routines. Challenge each other to a sock-sliding contest down the hallway. It's the little things that add up.3. Don't Take the Mundane So Seriously Not everything has to be optimized, scheduled, or turned into a life lesson. Dance while doing the dishes. Narrate your errands in the voice of a sports commentator. Be willing to let go of being “normal” in favor of being fully present and absurdly joyful.4. Reconnect With Childhood Joys Board games, old cartoons, blanket forts—there's magic in revisiting the things you loved as a kid. Shared nostalgia not only sparks playfulness but can also lead to surprisingly meaningful conversations about who you were and who you've become.5. Keep the Flirt Alive Flirting isn't just for the early days. It's a playful way to say, “I still choose you.” That wink across the room, the spontaneous compliment, the playful teasing—it's all part of keeping the spark burning bright. The Role of "Ludus Love"Psychologists have identified a type of love known as "Ludus," which centers around play, teasing, and lighthearted flirtation. While it's often associated with more casual relationships, elements of Ludus can be essential even in long-term partnerships. By incorporating humor, spontaneity, and a touch of the unexpected, couples can avoid the trap of predictability and keep things feeling fresh.Playfulness, when paired with trust and emotional safety, can create a dynamic where joy becomes part of the foundation—not just a fleeting mood, but a shared value. What Playfulness Isn'tIt's important to clarify what playful love doesn't mean. It's not sarcasm at your partner's expense. It's not ignoring hard conversations or using jokes to avoid accountability. True playfulness comes from a place of connection, not criticism. It's about lifting each other up, not tearing each other down under the guise of “just kidding.”Why It Matters More Than EverIn an age of chronic stress and over-scheduled calendars, couples often slip into routine. Days blur into weeks, and romance becomes another task to manage. But play cuts through that fog. It reminds us that love doesn't have to be so serious all the time. That joy isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. When couples laugh together, they stay connected. They remember why they chose each other in the first place. They build memories that are filled not just with milestones, but with moments—spontaneous, weird, wonderful moments that don't need to be captured for social media to matter. The TakeawayPlayfulness is more than a nice-to-have. It's a relational superpower. Whether it's through a goofy dance, a made-up game, or a shared laugh at the end of a long day, injecting a little fun into your relationship can deepen your bond, improve communication, and keep the romance alive. So lighten up. Let go of the need to always be productive or polished. Make room for play. Because sometimes, the key to lasting love isn't grand gestures—it's being willing to be a little ridiculous, together.ReferencesAun, Wong, (2002); Antecedents and Consequences of Adult Play in Romantic Relationships; Personal Relationships 9(3), 279-286. https://doi.org/10.1111/1475-6811.00019Baxter, (1992); Forms and Functions of Intimate Play in Personal Relationships; Human Communication Research, 18(3), 336–363. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1468-2958.1992.tb00556.xBrauer, Proyer, Chick, (2021); Adult playfulness: An update on an understudied individual differences variable and its role in romantic life; Social and Personality Compass; 15(4). https://doi.org/10.1111/spc3.12589 This research paper is summarized in the article How Playfulness Improves Relationships; Psychology Today, August 15, 2024Gold, Timmons, et al (2024); A day in the life: Couples' everyday communication and subsequent relationship outcomes; Journal of Family Psychology, 38(3), 453–465 https://doi.org/10.1037/fam0001180 This research paper is summarized in the article How Playfulness Keeps a Romance Alive; Psychology Today, April 18, 2024.Metz, McCarty, (2007); The “Good-Enough Sex” model for couple sexual satisfaction; Sexual and Relationship Therapy 22(3), 351–362https://doi.org/10.1080/14681990601013492 Proyer, Ruch, (2011); The virtuousness of adult playfulness: the relation of playfulness with strengths of character; Psychology of Well-Being 1(4). https://doi.org/10.1186/2211-1522-1-4 This is a public episode. How does love fit into your life? Are you aware of your love or being loved? Love is fundamental to human existence; expressing love and feeling loved are key to a healthy and productive life. In reality, love is essential but is often forgotten. This episode explores how one small word—love—encompasses a vast spectrum of human experiences. While English limits us to a single term, ancient Greeks and Romans recognized nine distinct types of love that shape our relationships, creativity, and sense of self. Join us as we unpack these nine "colors" of love: from passionate Eros to playful Ludus, from the selfless Agape to the practical Pragma. Learn how these different expressions of love influence your daily life, your relationships, and your personal development. Through a simple yet powerful exercise called "The Love List," you'll discover which types of love dominate your life and which might be missing. This exploration isn't just theoretical—it's a pathway to deeper self-understanding and more meaningful connections with others. Whether you're reflecting on romantic relationships, family bonds, creative pursuits, or your relationship with yourself, this episode offers a framework to understand and express love in all its beautiful complexity. Hey there! Ever wondered how love fits into the grand scheme of your life? Join me, Paul Harvey, your midlife coach, in this bite-sized episode of the Life Passion and Business Shortcast where we dive into the essence of love. We all know love is fundamental to human existence, right? Yet, we often brush past it in our daily grind without giving it the spotlight it deserves. In this engaging episode, I explore how we can weave love into every aspect of our lives, from trivial things like our favorite foods to deeper connections we share with our families and friends. I invite you to make a 'love list'—an enlightening exercise that helps you map out the different kinds of love you experience. Have you ever thought about how your love for pizza differs from the love you feel for your partner? Or how does time spent with an old school friend evoke philia love? Together, we uncover the different faces of love as viewed through the lens of ancient Greek and Latin words—like Eros for passionate love, Philia for deep friendship, and Agape for unconditional love. It's all about recognizing these varying degrees in the everyday actions and relationships that fill our lives with meaning. We also tackle the importance of self-love, Philautia, emphasizing how acknowledging and embracing who we are can empower us to climb higher and weather the storms of life. This exploration isn't just about understanding; it's also about feeling and expressing love, which, as you'll see, is a true game-changer in your personal development journey. So, whether you wish to find more passion, build deeper relationships, or simply understand yourself better, this episode might just be the nudge you need. Don't forget to share it with a friend or leave a comment—let's spread the love and remind everyone that love truly is the better option! When you have completed your love list, mark it up as directed. Here are the different forms of love to remind you. Eros: Romantic Love, the Greek god of love, the Cupid cherub Philia: Affectionate love. This is the love between friends Agape: Unconditional; it is the love of sacrifice. Storge: Family love; it is how we feel about our parents and children Mania: Fixation and obsession are also forms of love. Ludus: Play Pragma: Pracicality. Meraki: The Art of Creation. Philautia: Self Love. For more information, check out the links below, and if you found this useful, consider buying me a coffee below. Today we continue our journey from last week where we spun up a Hetzner cloud server and Ludus.cloud SCCM pentesting range! Topics include: Building a Proxmox Backup Server (this YouTube video was super helpful) Bridging a second WAN IP to the Hetzner/Ludus server Wrestling with the Hetzner (10-rule limit!) software firewall When attacking SCCM – you can get a version of pxethief that runs in Linux!
I had an absolute ball this week spinning up my first Hetzner server, though it was not without some drama (firewall config frustrations and failing hard drives). Once I got past that, though, I got my first taste of the amazing world of Ludus.cloud, where I spun up a vulnerable Microsoft SCCM lab and have started to pwn it. Can't say enough good things about Ludus.cloud, but I certainly tried in this episode!

In this episode of the Ludus Brand podcast, Dalton, one of the first clients, and Coach Rod discuss Dalton's experience as a client in the Ludus Brand coaching program. Dalton shares how he got into fitness after leaving college and joining the military, and how he noticed his friend getting strong through coaching. He decided to give it a try and saw incredible results, gaining strength and muscle mass. Coach Rod explains the principles of the conjugate system and how it can help individuals surpass their genetic predispositions. They also discuss the launch of Ludus Brand's official coaching program and the value it offers to clients. The conversation focuses on the benefits and theory behind banded training in powerlifting. The use of bands provides accommodating resistance, which helps to overcome sticking points and improve speed and strength. The conversation also emphasizes the importance of nutrition and mental fortitude in powerlifting training. The training program discussed includes max effort and speed days, as well as GPP (general physical preparedness) days to address lagging muscle groups. In this conversation, Rod and Dalton discuss the importance of sport-specific training and the benefits of using variations in exercises. They emphasize the need for athletes to train different motor units and carve neural pathways specific to their sport. Rod explains how he tailors Dalton's training program to focus on the muscle groups and movements relevant to lacrosse. They also discuss the importance of injury prevention and prehabilitation in training. The conversation concludes with a discussion about the Ludus community and the various platforms where Dalton shares his fitness journey. Takeaways The Ludus Brand coaching program can deliver significant results in terms of strength and muscle gain. The conjugate system, as used by Ludus Brand, can help individuals surpass their genetic predispositions and achieve exceptional results. Commitment and a leap of faith are necessary to fully benefit from the Ludus Brand coaching program. Training in the conjugate system may attract attention and curiosity from others in the gym, but it's important to stay focused and ignore any negative comments or looks. Ludus Brand has launched an official coaching program, offering a 12-week program and the ability to customize training for individual clients. Banded training in powerlifting provides accommodating resistance and helps overcome sticking points. The use of bands improves speed and strength by increasing tension throughout the range of motion. Proper nutrition and mental fortitude are crucial for success in powerlifting. How To Play Ludus: Nightmares Into Reality. Hello! I'm the GM running the game Ludus: nightmares into reality in an upcoming episode of Firebreathing Kittens. This is a brief introduction to the game's mechanics to help familiarize our players and listeners with the game before we play. Ludus is a game where the players influence a dream using “twists” and try to turn it into a true nightmare. There is no character sheet, nor weapons nor magic. Technically, it doesn't even really need a GM. The players are in charge and it's very improvisation-heavy. That's not to say there isn't a mechanic. There is, but it's rather tricky to explain so I'll do my best. The game starts with the characters establishing a dream. Then, they take turns adding a twist to the dream until they reach 20 twists or they decide they're done. A twist is basically “yes, and…”-ing. So if the dream is sheep hopping over a fence, a twist would be “the fence has barbs”, then another twist is “the fence starts to grow and the barbs get closer to the sheep”, etc. etc. until the players decide to stop. This is where the game's core mechanic comes in. The mechanic to determine whether or not the dream successfully turns into a nightmare is a cursed formula. The best way I can describe it is this: x(y@zD#w). I encourage you to write this down, so I'll repeat it: x(y@zD#w). Where x = the number of twists; y = the dice to roll based on the number of twists to the dream; z = the number of players; and w = the number of dice values that equal the wild die's value. @, D, and # are placeholders within the formula and hold no alternative meaning. The equation will be explained further in a second, but with the addition of twists, we get three values to plug into the formula: x (the number of twists), y (the dice to roll based on x), and z (the number of players). The game rules include a table that tells you which dice to use for what number of turns. So, we have three values. Now we roll the dice, represented by the variable y. This can be anywhere from one to three dice; no matter what, one of the lowest dice Must be designated as the wild die. If the wild die hits its maximum value, then it explodes and you roll another die of the same value. If that die also explodes, you repeat the process until it no longer explodes. For example, if your wild die is a d6 (or your common six-sided die) and you roll a 6, you roll another d6. If that die also rolls a 6, you roll another d6, etc. etc. until you don't roll a 6. Next, you sort the dice from lowest face value to highest face value going from left to right. Count the number of dice that have the same face value as the wild die, including the wild die itself. This number is the w variable in our equation which again, is x(y@zD#w). We've finally finished writing our equation. Now we have to resolve it. Starting with the lowest die, count, from left to right, the number of dice equal to our w variable. The die you land on is the number of Rounds you have to do things in the Ballad section (more on that in a bit). Next, starting from the highest die value, count, from right to left, the number of dice equal to the z variable. Add up the face values of the dice you counted. This sum is the Success value. Now, compare your Success value to the number equal to your x variable. If the Success value is greater than x, the dream is twisted into a true nightmare. If the Success value is less than x, the dream gets weird but resolves as a dream normally would. After the resolution of the Success value, we move into the Ballad section. This is where the dream fully manifests into a failed or true nightmare. The players go around taking turns describing what happens, again using “yes, and…” to craft the nightmare. This “yes, and…” is known as a verse in the Ballad section, rather than a twist like it was in the dream section. A round is made up of each player contributing one verse, and the entire Ballad section has a number of rounds equal to the w variable. The nightmare should be a full story that resolves at the end of the last round. And that's how you play Ludus! In the game I'm running, the players will need to make three true nightmares to succeed in their quest. Before we begin play, though, we'll also go over player comfort and safety. I don't want any of our fellow Firebreathing Kittens to feel overly uncomfortable, and this game has the potential for disturbing stuff to arise. We'll be talking about lines, veils, and x-cards before we play. Lines are firm boundaries: any topic that is a line for a player won't be brought up, period. Veils are more loose, things that players may feel uncomfortable with but also feel ok exploring. X-cards are for players to use if those veils are explored and they don't like how it makes them feel. Anything that is x-carded will be treated as a line and the subject will be dropped. For anyone playing with me, I encourage use of the x-card. You're the only one who knows your boundaries, so please share them if you are truly discomforted. We're all friends here. Well, that should do it! I hope this was a helpful guide to understanding the game of Ludus: nightmares into reality. If you're interested in playing the game, I hope you listen to the upcoming game. The Play about the Antichrist (Ludus de Antichristo) was composed around 1160 at the imperial Bavarian abbey of Tegernsee, at a critical point in the power-struggle between the papacy and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In this new translation, Carol Symes provides the first full and faithful rendering of the play's dynamic language, maintaining the meter, rhyme scheme, and stage directions of the Latin original and restoring the liturgical elements embedded in the text. Kyle A. Thomas, whose dedicated research provides the foundation for an analysis of the play's broader contexts, also brings perspectives from the first fully staged modern production that tested the theatricality of the translation and provides a new historical and dramaturgical analysis of the play's rich interpretive and performative possibilities. In this discussion, Symes and Thomas discuss the significance of the play, surprising and fascinating things they learned while working on the book, and what the Play about the Antichrist tells us about what it means to be human. Carol Symes is associate professor of history and theatre at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and author of an award-winning monograph on theater and public life in medieval Arras. Kyle A. Thomas is assistant professor of theatre at Missouri State University, specializing in medieval performance texts and strategies for their modern enactment. Becky Straple-Sovers is a medievalist and freelance editor who earned her Ph.D. in English at Western Michigan University in 2021. Love is hard to define. But, according to the book MARRIAGE: From Miserable to Magnificent, “Love” has a multitude of meanings and expressions across relationships In this episode of Open Late, Jess explains the different forms of love from the Greek language based on her recent reading MARRIAGE: From Miserable to Magnificent. She also provides clear examples of what each type of love means and how they can be expressed in various situations and relationships. Before getting into specific types of love, it is important to define love in general. The Greeks used the word “eros” where we get the word “erotic” to describe romantic or sensual attraction. In contrast, the English word “love” has been used to describe several different feelings over the years, including friendship, compassion, the love we have for parents and children, god, etc. By the end of this episode, you will have a better understanding of loving dynamics and how they can enrich different relationships in your life. In this episode of Open Late, • How to measure success in relationship • How love without ownership works • Definition of love in a non-monogamous container • How nonmonogamy can support more authenticity and depth to your relationship • Forms of love (Eros, Philia, Storge, Ludus, Agape, Mania, Philautia and Pragma) and how they exist in different relationships and contexts Connect with Jessica: • Instagram: @journey.with.jessica | @openlatethepodcast • Website: openlatepodcast.com | jessicaesfandiary.com • Youtube: Open Late Podcast • What's my relationship style? "For many people who want to create a conscious relationship, we're starting to examine these “norms” (monogamy) and question the belief systems that we have." "I think that we all measure success in our relationships in different ways, and it's important for you to define how you define success in your relationship and go from there." I had no idea that I'd break into tears during this podcast, but I did. The topic is love, after all. And my heart is broken BIG TIME. I am reviewing these notes on the morning of surgery to fix a deviated septum from middle school when my nose was severely broken. My mom had looked at me with my Marsha-Brady-episode-where-her-nose-blew-up-to-3x-times-the-size-and-black-and-blue-eyes (that rhymes) and said, “You're fine.” So today, I don't breathe as well as would be optimal. I believe this is part of my loss of health story. I'm finally getting it fixed. It has been a HORRIBLE road to get to this morning. I drive around the streets of Evanston, recognizing the places where I was there for my husband when he needed surgery. When I dropped my life to “serve” him. Now that my “service” doesn't “serve” him, where is he? I've been a less-than-optimal-version-of-myself. I'm so sorry, to everyone, who has had to see any part of this journey. Per my ideas on apologies, I plan to make sure that I do better. I'm on my way now to my dad's house to give him a hug. I was not my best self when I saw him last. My mom also has been offering help, and I hope to take her up on some help during my convalescence. In today's episode, I call on Shakira to help me, again. She has been one of my important spiritual guides in my life. I LOVE SHAKIRA. (Me encanta!).Sometimes it can put your own problems in perspective when you hear about those of others. Shakira has been through an insane year. My broken heart goes out to hers. Let's start with this song by Shakira, Monotonía https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5y6xLpRwx4 OMG that is me! I put my heart on a sleeve, and it got stepped on big time. Thrown on the street, broken. I have felt empty and lying on the floor like Shakira is shown. Then we go to Don't You Worry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me19SUmWu2s I know it's possible to cry all day and night until you fall asleep sitting up, but eventually, it DOES stop. Your dogs or cats might be soaking wet with your tears and really pent up with energy because you haven't left the house (and are really worrying the neighbors with whatever can come through the walls), but it does eventually stop. At least for that day. Then you might find yourself crying the next day again, and it may also come in waves when you least expect it. But I have to say to myself, “everything's gonna be okay.” Gracias Shakira. Then we move to Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRpeEdMmmQ0 “When you fall get up, eh eh.” And I will start to meet my OWN NEEDs. After all, what we need or want from others, we must be able to give to ourselves. Connection with others plays a role in everyone's lives in different ways for different reasons. It is difficult to sustain connections with others when we struggle to connect and meet our needs within ourselves. So… I will see myself I will hear myself I will understand myself I will fairly judge myself. Maybe I need to take up dance lessons so that I can move like Shakira. RRRRR. And get back to my work at Nurture to help communities in need. Mantras from the show:#1: Get to know love; we don't understand it in our culture#2: Move past “conditional” vs. “unconditional” love and consider compassionate love.#3: Understand the many types of love the Greeks appreciated: Eros, Philia, Ludus, Agape, Pragma, Philatia. I realize that I hardly get into the types on my podcast, so just read about it here.Your homework, if you choose to accept: go help someone in need! If you are a woman, tune in to what might be happening to other women (or the feminine side of a man) today. There seems to be strong energy around conflict and the change of an old model that involved subjugating women. (Yep, I just wrote that– ask me about the times I've seen gross men pat waitresses' asses and be total assholes. I've been on the wrong side of that equation, ME TOO). See the paradigm for change from episode 124. Two questions if you're brave enough to consider change:- Can women and men start to do LESS of being the Perpetrator and Victim? And move into Creator and Challenger?- Can we start to truly CO-CREATE the way I believe that God/Goddess/All that is intended? Let's finish with, What is Love (the SNL version with A Night at the Roxbury https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2h4PhgobI8 Thank you for watching. I'm going to go pick up dog poop now. Hasta luego! I am learning late in life how to express “bad” emotions like sadness and anger. I sent this to my Dad before heading to surgery. He is upset with me and my recent displays of anger (even though, I believe I have a lot to be sad and mad about– being lied to and deceived by your husband for nearly decades is a biggie). PS– If you have not been following the podcast, the LIES I was told and believed were that I was a priority in my husband's life. He opened his mouth a gazillion times and said, “You are my #1. You are a priority.” He wrote those words many times. His actions didn't match those words, which created a lot of dissonance in my nervous system. Perhaps that is why I didn't sleep and had insomnia for nearly two decades. And you know what? Maybe I lied too. Maybe when I said to him, “You're doing a good job” I was certainly lying about his role as a husband. I didn't do a good job listening to my inner voice telling me something was off. Ultimately, our lies only did a good job of hurting me. We created an enormous amount of dissonance and pent-up issues in my nervous system, which then created more problems. I'm trying to dig myself out in so many ways. While my husband skis on the slopes and enjoys the beachfront condo I set up for him in Puerto Rico. PENDEJO. I'm off to drive myself to surgery. I hired some help afterward. Be well. This is what I sent to Jeff after I expressed anger to him, which he could not handle. In a text: I'm sorryPlease forgive me I love youThank you Then he sent the cops on me. Hopefully, with you, Dad, you will be understanding and confident in knowing that I DO love you and intend only the best for both you and me in sending this prayer to you. I am strong and will survive. Again, I love you.
