During our CXNext Event in Boston I had the chance to sit down with Mariya Yao, CTO at Metamaven and Founder of TOPBOTS. She had just given an excellent presentation, so I wanted to invite her onto the AI:IRL podcast to talk a little bit more about AI. In this episode, Mariya talks about what executives need to know to begin tackling machine learning.
In a recent DataTalk, we had a chance to chat with Marlene Jia from TOPBOTS about ways businesses can use bots to scale customer service and marketing. Marlene Jia (MJ) works with brand clients such as L’Oreal, WPP, and PayPal on their applied AI and bot technology initiatives. Her expertise in enterprise software and best practices helps corporations successfully evaluate, develop, and integrate emerging technologies.

There’s the hype. Sure. But there’s also the hysteria. For most, bots are either the thing that’ll carry our companies into the future, or they’re a skip away from subjugating the entire human race. Today, we’re talking to Adelyn Zhou, CMO of TOPBOTS. She gives us her take on companies using these technologies successfully, how you can build a AI or machine learning team yourself (if you really need one), and what we can really expect from our robot overlords.
Guys, did you hear the news? The robots are going to kill us. At least that appears to be the primary fear of tech mogul Elon Musk regarding artificial intelligence. This week, when fellow tech titan Mark Zuckerberg was hailing the promise of AI in a Facebook Live Q&A, he ended up subtweeting Musk, calling AI naysayers "irresponsible" for playing up "doomsday scenarios." Musk fired back on his favorite medium, Twitter, saying Zuck has a "limited understanding" of AI. The resulting headlines made more hay from the tech CEO slap fight than the underlying issue: How much should we be concerned about the growing power of AI, what are the potential dark sides of the tech (Skynet included), and can we do something about them? To help answer these important questions, Mariya Yao joins the show this week. Yao is the CTO of Topbots, a company that helps other companies build and implement AI solutions to the problems they're trying to solve -- and to do so "wisely." She's also the co-author on a forthcoming book about applied AI. In this week's MashTalk, Yao, Pete, and Mashable's Michael Nuñez try to boil down what it is exactly that scares Musk so much about AI, what a future AI-powered world might look like, and what the real concerns are about the rapidly growing field in the here and now. Follow Mariya Yao on Twitter. Follow Pete, Michael, and MashTalk (now with an underscore-free handle!) on Twitter, too!

VB Engage - Mobile, Marketing, & Technology Podcast from VentureBeat
This week, Travis and Stewart are lucky enough to interview Adelyn Zhou of Topbots. We get schooled on the latest in A.I., how smaller businesses can get involved (it isn't just for Fortune 500 types), what's going on with chatbots, and whether she prefers Decepticons or Autobots. We also discuss the latest news (including some A.I. startups, of course), debate why it is now OK for Amazon Echo to get voice ads, and compare and contrast our experiences at both CUBE Tech Fair in Berlin and Martech 2017 in San Francisco.
Adelyn Zhou is the cofounder and Head of Marketing at Topbots. Adelyn is a seasoned technology leader with experience at Nextdoor, Eventbrite and Amazon. She has spoken at SXSW, Harvard Business School, Launch Festival, Growth Marketing Conference, 500 Startups, and more. She is a frequent contributor to VentureBeat, Forbes, Wired and other publications. Adelyn began her startup career by joining an up and coming company called Diapers.com which was later acquired by Amazon. Following that experience, she continued to build her career as a growth marketer joining startups like Eventbrite and NextDoor - where she helped significantly grow the reach of the platform. Moving back to New York, Adelyn started her own growth consultancy, before launching Topbots - a community for the best bot news. Adelyn joins us to share her story, how she got into startups, what it was like growing Diapers.com and being acquired by Amazon, some strategies Adelyn uses to approach growth based on the stage of a startup, why she’s so interested in bots, and much more!
