What if your greatest impact as a leader begins after your "official" career ends? Joe Davis, former Managing Director and Senior Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and author of "The Generous Leader: 7 Ways to Give of Yourself for Everyone's Gain", joins Peter Winick to share insights from his extraordinary shift from consulting titan to impactful thought leader. Joe reveals how the disruptions of COVID-19 inspired him to write his book—not just as a professional calling card, but to encourage executives to lead with heartfelt generosity and empathy. He emphasizes that legacy leadership isn't measured by revenue alone but by meaningful connections, personal growth, and empowering others. This episode is for CEOs and senior leaders contemplating their own "Act Three." Joe discusses the challenges and opportunities when transitioning from a structured corporate role into thought leadership and advisory work. He highlights the importance of being selective and intentional about the roles you choose post-retirement, avoiding burnout, and keeping control over your time. Joe also candidly discusses how success is redefined after a corporate career. He measures impact differently now, valuing deep personal connections, mentoring opportunities, and moments spent with family—especially his grandchildren. If you're an executive thinking about your next meaningful chapter, listen in as Joe Davis shares hard-won wisdom and practical guidance on building your legacy beyond the boardroom. Three Key Takeaways: • Legacy Starts Now: True leadership legacy isn't shaped by quarterly earnings or titles—it's built through empathetic connections, generosity, and empowering others, starting today. • Choose Wisely Post-Retirement: After a high-powered career, saying "yes" to everything can quickly lead to burnout. Be selective; prioritize roles that align deeply with your purpose. • Redefine Success on Your Terms: Success beyond the C-suite isn't measured by traditional metrics. Meaningful impact emerges from mentoring, family time, and genuinely fulfilling activities. If Joe Davis's insights on moving from executive roles to impactful thought leadership resonated with you, check out our episode featuring Vaughn Sigmon. Vaughn shares how he successfully transitioned from corporate leadership at CarMax to launching his own thriving leadership development firm. Both episodes explore how intentionality, authenticity, and clear personal branding drive meaningful post-corporate careers.
The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is a consulting giant. The company recently apologized for the "undisclosed work" of two senior executives who were working with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. BCG claimed the work was done pro-bono, but other sources claim that BCG was invoicing GHF (so many initials!) upwards of a million dollars a month. BCG has said it will not accept any money paid to it for any work done on this project. GHF has come under criticism for not only sloppy operations that resulted in the deaths of 27 people, but close ties to former Trump advisors and the country of Israel (Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu worked for BCG in the United States prior to his political career in Israel). In this thought-provoking discussion, Theo and Juliette analyze BCG's apology, examining the language, actions taken, and the broader implications in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They explore the challenges of navigating political sensitivity and the ethical responsibilities of global corporations engaged in humanitarian efforts. Tune in as they delve into the intricacies of public apologies and whether BCG's response measures up to the expectations of accountability and transparency.
The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a US-based firm that helped design and manage an aid initiative to deliver food to Palestinians in Gaza in areas controlled by the Israeli military, has withdrawn its team from the operation. Also, farmers express concern as Kenyan courts consider importing genetically modified seeds. And, Vietnam is scrapping its long-standing policy that families can only have two children. Michael became COO of Life just a few months ago, but he's been advising the company since 2018. Prior to this year, he was managing director and senior partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where over a 25-year career he focused on R&D and innovation initiatives across the private sector and government. “The future of consultants is intricately linked to the future of consulting”That's what one of the guests had to say about the future of consultants and the promise of consulting careers.Being a consultant at any of the big three consulting firms—McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, and Boston Consulting Group(BCG)—meant one thing: The opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects with big, innovative companies. It allowed the people who worked at these companies to have career opportunities, which would allow them to be prepared for even more challenging and rewarding roles in the world of startups. The accelerated learning, prestige, community and great pay packages that these companies offered ensured the best talent lined up to work for them. The first two years of a career in consulting are gruelling, demanding and difficult and often involve “low-value work”, like making presentations, data analysis and sending requests for proposals to really annoying clients. However, people still rush and fight to do it with the expectation that the payoffs compound later. It gives them a broader view of how companies work and operate. It acts as a training ground for building startups and laterally jumping into senior executive roles at fast-growing companies or even going higher up the consulting ladder.Today, that trade-off equation looks a bit distorted for students because it's never been easier to start a company. It's also been very easy to find post-MBA roles in companies that are more strategic in nature, and ESOPs look much more real and valuable because companies are going public. So the question becomes: Will students continue to chase consulting firms as a lucrative and promising career option? And does a career in consulting hold the same promises as it used to?Joining hosts Praveen Gopal Krishnan and Rohin Dharmakumar for the episode are Rahul Chaudhary, co-founder of Treebo, ex-McKinsey & Company and Pragya Batra, co-founder of Quirksmith, ex-Bain & Company.Welcome to episode 35 of Two by Two.–Help us find interesting women guests by filling out this survey – https://theken.typeform.com/to/KH0EOLGo–Additional listening:If B-schools were invented today, would students run placements? – https://the-ken.com/podcasts/two-by-two/if-b-schools-were-invented-today-would-students-run-placements/AI comes to annihilate India's SaaS companies – https://the-ken.com/podcasts/two-by-two/ai-comes-to-annihilate-indias-saas-companies/–This episode of Two by Two was produced by Hari Krishna. With an undergraduate degree from New York University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, Jon Malankar joined the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in 2018. He climbed the corporate ladder at this top managment consulting firm and became a partner in his mid-30s. But the bureaucratic burden of working for a large consulting firm with Fortune 100 clients and a strong desire to be more plugged in to his local community ("I felt like a nomad in my hometown"), Jon yearned to be his own boss. After a year of exploration, he opted to become a Mr. Handyman franchise owner in Long Branch, New Jersey. Despite no experience in home repair work, Jon is successfully managing four teams of repair professionals. According to Jon, "Owning a very local, present, visible, tangible small business really filled up the scorecard for me."

In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, we explore groundbreaking research from the BCG Henderson Institute, revealing the profound impact of Generative AI on data science tasks within the consulting sector. I am joined by Vladimir "Vlad" Lukic from Boston Consulting Group (BCG), who shares insights from a recent collaborative study with Boston University and OpenAI's Economic Impacts team. The experiment tested the efficacy of GenAI tools, including Enterprise ChatGPT with GPT-4 and Advanced Data Analysis, in enhancing the productivity and technical capabilities of BCG consultants versus traditional methods. Vlad details the experimental setup where consultants undertook typical data science tasks such as writing Python code for cleaning datasets, constructing predictive models, and validating statistical analyses generated by ChatGPT. The performance metrics of 480 consultants were then measured against 44 seasoned BCG data scientists who completed the tasks without GenAI assistance. Key findings underscored by Vlad reveal that GenAI not only elevates performance but also equips personnel with sophisticated technical skills, albeit tied to the use of the tool itself. Remarkably, consultants with no prior coding experience were able to execute advanced tasks, achieving 86% of the benchmark established by data scientists and completing these tasks with a 10% faster average time. I also learn how BCG is harnessing GenAI to foster productivity and broaden skill sets internally. Vlad explores the broader implications of GenAI in revolutionizing the consulting and professional services industries, driving significant value for clients through AI integration. Key takeaways from this session include the transformative role of GenAI as an 'exoskeleton' that offers instant skill augmentation, the necessity of balancing this with sustainable skill development, and the critical insights into effective GenAI integration within professional workflows. Join us as we explore these dynamic changes, offering both a comprehensive overview of the practical applications of GenAI and a visionary outlook on its evolving role in the professional world.

Hear from Bo Xu, a Principal at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and a member of GARP's Risk and AI Advisory Committee, about GenAI use cases and challenges, as well as its impact on modeling, governance, regulation and risk careers. Even though generative AI is in its early days, its already having a big effect in financial risk management. As a powerful, interactive technology that can understand natural language, quickly search through reams of data and provide human-style answer to questions, GenAI is being used today for everything from data processing to risk monitoring and measurement to quantitative risk modeling. At the same time, financial institutions must decide how to properly govern GenAI, particularly as critics have expressed concerns about data leakage, intellectual property protection and third-party risk. What's more, there are questions about the impact GenAI could have on risk jobs and about how regulators are going to respond to this innovative technology. His professional journey at BCG began in 2019, following a four-year tenure at KPMG in the risk consulting practice, concentrating on CCAR/DFAST model development and validation work. In his role at BCG, Xu leads a multi-disciplinary team focused on AI and GenAI programs. His responsibilities encompass strategy development, AI/GenAI implementation, and change management. He also has expertise in credit risk analysis, model risk management, and data governance from his earlier career.
As a longtime Harvard Business School professor and the former chief marketing officer at Aetna, David C. Edelman is all too familiar with both the dangers and opportunities of personalized technology. In Personalization, his new book, co-authored with Boston Consulting Group managing director Mark Abraham, Edelman focuses on customer strategy in our age of AI. While Edelman acknowledges that there have been dangers with Web 2.0 style products that enables personalization, he is nonetheless cautiously optimist that AI will enable companies to provide hyper-personalized services and products that will ultimately benefit consumers. Rather than the age of surveillance capitalism, then, Edelman believes that AI represents the age of the empowered and happy consumer. Fighting talk from one of the world's leading marketing mavens.David C. Edelman has a long history of Personalization work stretching back more than three decades. In 1989, he wrote the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) classic article, “Segment-of-One Marketing,” in which he predicted the possibilities of Personalization. David has worked with dozens of companies on Personalization, AI, and Agile marketing at BCG and Digitas before transforming Aetna's approach to customer experience while serving as the company's Chief Marketing Officer. His six articles in the Harvard Business Review cover the evolving Customer Decision Journey, the Future of Customer Experience, and the Implications of AI for Management Leaders and Boards. Today, he is an executive advisor and board member to brands and technology providers, is an advisor to BCG, and teaches at Harvard Business School. Forbes has repeatedly named him one of the Top 20 Most Influential Voices in Marketing, and Ad Age has named him a Top 20 Chief Marketing and Technology Officer. Supplier diversity programs have gotten a lot of attention in recent years, but the values and vision that underpin them is hardly new. What's the role of the BCG Center for Inclusion and Equity, and why that specific terminology? How do you navigate pushback against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within organizations?
