Season 14, Episode 33: The most predicable coming-out-of-retirement tale is complete, with Ben Stokes doing as we all knew he would – he's going to India for the World Cup in October to help England defend their World Cup. A lot more, from our night at The Hundred for Adam's birthday to Wahab Riaz's own retirement from international cricket… which he hasn't played for over three years. Throw in India getting rolled by the Windies, Steve Finn's retirement and an existential crisis for South African Test cricket and it's another busy week at Final Word HQ, which for the moment is Daniel Norcross' sitting room in South London. The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022, and it will start without Ben Stokes. He's pulled out of the tournament (as well as retiring from England ODIs) to balance his work load as the new Captain of England's test team. That is fair enough, but where does it leave the Northern Superchargers? Rich and Tom think it leaves the squad looking older and more patchy than most. Faf du Plessis had a great IPL 2022, but Dwayne Bravo, David Wiese and Wahab Riaz haven't been so hot. Maybe Adil Rashid can repeat his 2021 heroics and become the difference? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
In this Free Hit episode, we share some notable performances and key Pakistani and Bangladeshi players to watch from the first test match played between the two countries. Pakistan wins with Hassan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Abid Ali, and Abdullah Shafique all having a great first test match! We also share news about Wahab Riaz and Shoaib Malik's statements about retirement. Tom and Rich discuss the action from round 5 of The Hundred as the tournament approaches its final stages. The women's competition continues to produce high quality matches and a few surprises, with stars like Tammy Beaumont, Nat Sciver and Jemimah Rodrigues continuing to shine. On the men's side, the London Spirit remain winless (much to Rich's frustration) but the other seven teams remain in the hunt for a place in the top three. Wahab Riaz justifies his late arrival with a scintillating display of white ball bowling and the batting of Birmingham Phoenix looks fearsome with Moeen Ali getting sterling support from youngsters Chris Benjamin and Will Smeed. There is just enough time to talk about the England versus India test match too... Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/xm5DxYTvjFc Follow us on twitter: https://twitter.com/thehundredclub1

At the 1992 World Cup, Pakistan won just one of their first five matches and went on to lift the trophy. Could history be about to repeat itself? Jo Harman is joined by Daniel Gallan to look back at Pakistan’s 49-run victory over the Proteas at Lord’s, as they discuss the potent threat of Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz, some strong words from coach Mickey Arthur for the Pakistani press, and the futures of Faf du Plessis and Ottis Gibson. They also consider the wider impact this miserable campaign could have on South African cricket.
Nakul Pande is joined by Paul Howarth and Jeremy Henderson as they try not to talk about the rain; treat Glenn Maxwell better than he's ever been treated by Australia; and are engrossed by the one-man drama that is Wahab Riaz. And we once again actually talk about New Zealand! Get the pod before anyone else by becoming a patron!
Swanny and Nick are joined by former South African cricketer-turned-YouTube star Josh Pieters as they discuss - and recreate - THAT Ben Stokes catch, talk Bangladesh, Jennifer Lawrence and crowd abuse. Plus the boys face some hostile deliveries from Pakistan pace man Wahab Riaz. Want to hear more great podcasts from JOE? It's full on World Cup fever on LANSO as Cyrus Broacha is joined by comedians Mikhail Almeida & Siddharth Dudeja (from the podcast 'Waddaplayah'). The 3 of them discuss the return of Wahab Riaz and the Pakistani team's 'bi-polar' nature both winning and losing games comprehensively. They also discuss the fairly open nature of this world cup, and pick favourites in the India-South Africa encounter, NOTE: this show was recorded a day prior to the India vs. South Africa match.
Injured England batsman Sam Billings sits in for Phil Tufnell as Pakistan shock the hosts to win by 14 runs at Trent Bridge. We discuss where England went wrong, how Wahab Riaz proved his own coach wrong, and why this has been a bowler's World Cup so far. Plus there’s an appearance from a hovercover. Or is it Michael’s hairdryer?
Well, well, well, Pakistan stun England in a major tournament once again. You'll hear from Michael Vaughan, Joe Root and Wahab Riaz on where the match was won and lost. Were there nerves in the England ranks? Sir Viv Richards drops by to explain what it's like to handle the pressure of being pre-tournament favourites. And Graeme Swann and Fazeer Mohammed have a bit of a ding dong over Mankadding.
Isa, Aatif and Ankur preview the World Cup chances of two South Asian powerhouses – Pakistan and India. Can the team in green add to their sole triumph which was way back in 1992? Why is Wahab Riaz back and how far can they go? The team wonder if King Kohli can replicate the heroes from yesteryear when India won the cup in England back in 1983. Ankur and Isa bump into the skipper of that side – Kapil Dev – to ask the man himself as well as the likes of World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh and a Bollywood star….
Our Peshawar Zalmi preview is here! Listen to us talk about the Peshawar Zalmi squad as we summarise all you need to know about them. We talk about what Misbah-ul-Haq brings to the team, how good of a captain Darren Sammy is, what do players like Dawid Malan and Kieron Pollard bring to the table and how potent the combination of Chris Jordan, Wahab Riaz, and Hasan Ali can be. We also talk about Umar Amin and Shoaib Maqsood and how they haven't been able to live up to expectations. Both teams have a lot to prove as Australia try to recover from their biggest scandal this millennium, while Pakistan owe their fans an apology for their Asia Cup performances. With sweeping changes brought in for both teams and some big names returning to the team, including Yasir Shah, Mohammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz, the series is sure to be interesting.
