The South Africans couldn't remove their World Cup back monkey; can the New Zealanders jettison their shoulder riding chimp? The Indian cricketers have a similar issue with New Zealand, the little team that continue to embarrass the dominant force in world cricket. The Proteas problem of choking in big moments at global white ball tournaments has long been an itch that can't be scratched. After cruising through the World Cup prelims, unbeaten until the semi-final versus the Black Caps, the Africans, full of rightful confidence, held on so tightly to expectation that they strangled the life out of any chances they had. They slumped when it mattered, the oxygen required to operate at such a level of competition, was sucked from them, not only by the miserly bowling from NZ, but by the suffocating nature of unrealised potential. They didn't choke, they self-asphyxiated, as impossible as that may sound. The Black Caps may well stumble at the last hurdle, the monkey on their back not being one that chokes the life out of them, it's the one that whispers in their ear, you're not good enough. Constantly reminded by the world that they have no right to be at the sharpest end of tournament with their tiny population and almost non-existent player base, they have been so close, and short of the Nairobi Champions Trophy win a quarter of a century ago, never pushed through to claim the major title that has beckoned. India has a different, but equally stressful issue. New Zealand has become a thorn in their side, that's been there so long it's gone septic. When it really matters, India can't put New Zealand away. All the money in the world, an incomprehensibly vast population comparison and a governing body that will stop at nothing to stack the odds in India's favour, yet New Zealand regularly gets up their face and embarrasses them. The next layer of pressure for the Indian side is the weight of expectation they must carry. At home, in front of 130,000 fans in the Ahmedabad Stadium, defending champions who may be the first team to go back-to-back in T20 World Cups and the first team to win the T20 World Cup at home. Does any of this matter come Monday morning? It shouldn't. Do past performances really dictate future outcomes? Strictly speaking they don't, but they do play on the minds of competitors. Who deals with these mind shadows the best will surely hold the trophy aloft. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We all know our Proteas are world-class on the field, but have you ever wondered what the pay cheque looks like for South Africa's top cricketers? It turns out that being a South African cricketer comes with a handsome payout.

In the last 25 years neither the Black Caps or their T20 Cricket World Cup semi-final opponents South Africa have won an ICC white-ball trophy. Tomorrow morning the two sides meet at Eden Gardens with the Proteas seen as the favourites to progress to the final. Sports reporter Felicity Reid spoke to Lisa Owen.
In this episode of the show, Baldy and Stu look back at the first semifinal of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which was played at Eden Gardens between the Black Caps of New Zealand and the Proteas from South Africa. We start with our instant reactions to a remarkable reversal of form as New Zealand crushed South Africa thanks to an excellent bowling performance and a dominant display by the openers, highlighted by Finn Allen's record-breaking century from just 33 balls. There's praise for the bowling group of Cole McConchie, Lockie Ferguson, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry and Jimmy Neesham, and we re-live the incredible hitting on show as Finn Allen and Tim Seifert powered New Zealand to a nine-wicket win inside 13 overs. We also reflect on South Africa's disappointment after what had been such a fantastic tournament for them up until this game. To round out the show, we also look ahead to the second semifinal between England and India at Wankhede Stadium. Who will meet the Kiwis in Ahmedabad on Sunday? In this episode of The Cricket Podcast, we dive into the high-stakes drama of the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8s, where the semi-final picture is finally becoming clear. England have become the first team to officially qualify for the knockouts, completing a remarkable turnaround after a shaky start to the tournament. We break down Harry Brook's sensational match-winning century against Pakistan that punched their ticket to the semi-finals. With their place secured, we ask: is this the most balanced England T20 side we've seen in years? Meanwhile, India have kept their World Cup dreams alive with a dominant 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in Chennai. After a bruising loss to South Africa, the Men in Blue found their spark through an Abhishek Sharma masterclass and a clinical bowling performance. We look ahead to Sunday's "virtual quarter-final" at Eden Gardens, where India must defeat the West Indies to join the Proteas in the last four. Learn more about your ad choices.

Georgia joins us on the programme. Plus, as the men's T20 World Cup enters the super eight's phase, we discuss South Africa's statement win over co-hosts and defending champions India and we ask, if that victory could boost The Proteas credentials as one of the title contenders.Photo Credit: Georgia Voll of Australia bats during game two of the Women's T20 International series between Australia and India at Manuka Oval on February 19, 2026 in Canberra, Australia. In this episode of The Cricket Podcast we break down the massive T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 upsets that have blown Group 1 wide open. First, we analyse how South Africa ended India's 12-match winning streak in a dominant 76-run victory in Ahmedabad. Was it David Miller's explosive 63 or a rare failure from the Indian top order? We dive deep into the India vs South Africa highlights to see if the Proteas have finally found the formula to win big ICC trophies. Next, we ask the burning question: Are England back? After a clinical 51-run win over Sri Lanka in Pallekele, Harry Brook's side looks like a serious contender again. We review Will Jacks' game-changing bowling performance and discuss whether England's aggressive style will hold up against Pakistan's spinners in the next round. Sports pundits dub it the final before the the actual final. This is a rematch of the 2024 final between co-hosts India and the Proteas in Ahmedabad today. The Proteas Men will seek to continue with their unbeaten form in the tournament while India who has looked less convincing although undefeated as well will look to peak at the right moment of the competition. India were in trouble in their opening group match at 77-6 against the USA before captain Suryakumar Yadav hit an unbeaten 84 to rescue his side. The Proteas' top order batsmen have however displayed consistency with the bat, something that they will to continue with in the Super Eight. For more on this clash of the titans, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to SAfm's sports anchor Janet Whitton

In this episode of the show, Baldy and Stu look back at Day 12 of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup, which featured three games: India v Netherlands, Pakistan v Namibia and South Africa v UAE. We start the show by discussing the tournament favourites, India, and their final pool match against the Netherlands. Abhishek Sharma fell early again, but starts from the rest of the top order were iced by a big contribution from Shivam Dube, who continues to be an unsung hero for India. The Netherlands batters played some quality shots during the chase, but it was Varun Chakravarthy who starred for India with the ball and helped seal a 12th consecutive T20 World Cup victory. The second game of the day saw Pakistan taking on Namibia in Colombo, with Super 8 qualification on the line. But there was barely a nervous moment as a Sahibzada Farhan hundred powered Pakistan close to 200, and then the spinners took charge with the ball - Shadab Khan and Usman Tariq in particular among the wickets. South Africa made four changes to their side, but still finished off their pool play with a comfortable win against the UAE. Corbin Bosch and George Linde were in the wickets as the Proteas put the squeeze on - bowling 53 dot balls across the innings as the UAE reached 122-6. That score was never going to be enough, and South Africa eased to the total without too much trouble. To round out the show, the boys look ahead to Day 13, which sees the West Indies v Italy, Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe and Afghanistan & Canada finish up their 2026 T20 World Cup journey. There's also a brief recap of the Super 8 qualifiers as the next phase is nearly here. We'll be back in your feed again tomorrow with the next instalment of our T20 World Cup coverage.
