Thanks to Ndiaye and Xhaka respectively, Jacob and Jiayang both enjoyed successful Bench Boosts. Our overall solid gameweeks, however, owed little thanks to our starting midfielders, none of whom got a single return. Which leads to the question: are we in the midst of a midfielder drought? Five out of the top ten highest-scoring midfielders are either box-to-box or defensive midfielders, with Rice looking especially enticing due to Arsenal's ever-potent set-piece threat. Jacob is also forced to confront some first-world problems: firstly, still having a Free Hit chip without an obvious gameweek to play it in, and secondly, having no idea what to do with any of his four transfers. Speaking of which—more than a year after managers were allowed to have five free transfers in the bank instead of two, Jiayang wistfully reminisces about the days when using three transfers in one go—two free transfers and a hit—felt like a joyous mini-Wildcard.Follow us on Twitter: @FplFortress

Here is what a draft would look like if you are playing either chip in FPL GW7!
CHIPS ARE ACTIVE!Rich is joined by @FPLJianBatra and BigManBakar to preview Gameweek 6. We'll be breaking down the big chip decisions — Wildcard, Triple Captain, and Free Hit — and which one could give your squad the biggest edge.━━━━━━━━━━━━
No Wildcard for me, Salah stays and Haaland comes in and gets the Triple Captain armband!
Wildcards are flying everywhere, all three of us might be playing a chip this week with Wildcard and Triple captaincy all on the cards. We discuss Wildcard 6 / 8 / 13 tradeoffs, Best FPL wildcard picks and also discuss a possible Free Hit 6 team. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━
With Manchester City entering a positive swing of fixtures that begins with the visit of Burnley, Suj and James decided this would be a good time to revaluate strategy for chip usage in the first half of the season. The Podcast kicks off with discussion on if Crystal Palace's progress in the Carabao Cup could lead to blanks and doubles in December and there's an assessment of 'danger fixtures' where rotation could bite due to short turnarounds or difficult fixtures either side of 'easier' games. And there's discussion on options available for all of the Bench Boost, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Wildcard chips right up until the final opportunity of GW19. FPL Chai (@FPLChai) and Gianni (@GianniButtice_ ) reflect on GW4 so far and how Chai's Free Hit went. They also discuss Chai's Team Selection for Gameweek 5.
In this week's episode of the Above Average FPL podcast, Adam and Baker return with green arrows and plenty to dissect from a wild GW4:
Wake up, wake up, the first international break of the season is over! First, we refresh our memories of what happened in Gameweek 3, including Liverpool's tight victory over Arsenal, West Ham's upset over Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United's last-gasp win against Burnley (which contributed to Jiayang's somewhat successful spontaneous Free Hit that featured all three of Bruno, Mbeumo, and Cunha). For our Dilemma Deliberations, we contemplate the viability of Liverpool's attacking options following Isak's arrival, then extensively explore the effect that Defensive Contributions are having on the defender meta. It seems like this new route to points for cheap center backs may enable them to rival—even supplant—cheap attacking fullbacks, which have been a true FPL staple for years—even decades.
The international break is over, we look at the injuries, discuss transfers, Free Hit 4, Wildcards and more! ━━━━━━━━━━━━━
FREE HIT ACTIVE! FPL Chai has activated his Free Hit for GW4 and discusses his plans with Gianni Buttice.
In this bonus episode, we've collated Wildcard and Free Hit advice from Joe (8× Top 10K). He shares his favourite transfer options for GW4 to help you maximise points if you're activating either chip!
Adam and Baker are joined by Ivan for an early-season check-in that's anything but average. With Free Hits flying and Wildcards tempting, the trio unpack the tactical and emotional rollercoaster of early-season FPL. Ivan shares his unique approach to playing without checking rank, while the crew debate the impact of DefCon, chip timing, and the transfer window's ripple effect. Key Talking Points: • Ivan's Free Hit strategy and chip sequencing • The rise of DefCon: Are defenders now OP? • Premium dilemmas: Salah, Haaland, and the midfield shuffle • Rank blindness: Ivan's philosophy and its impact • Transfer chaos and tactical uncertainty • Wildcard timing Support the Show • Become a patron: https://patreon.com/aboveaveragefpl • Rate & review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or your favourite platform • Join our Discord for 24/7 FPL banter Learn more about your ad choices. It's Deadline Day which means players are on the move and that could alter the landscape for FPL managers during the International break. Suj and James try to make some sense of the noise as they review all the games from Gameweek 3, which included brilliant away wins for Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, Manchester United leaving it late at Old Trafford against Burnley, Manchester City slipping up again at Brighton and Liverpool beating Arsenal at Anfield. There's tips for those on Wildcard and Free Hit ahead of Gameweek 4, players under consideration for purchase and sale and tactical notes from the weekend which included West Ham's switch to a back four in victory at Nottingham Forest and Newcastle's surprise selections in their bore draw at Leeds. What a week in the Premier League, so much action to discuss, this could be a long stream - strap in folks! Loads of FPL discussion to be hard too, with Joao Pedro owners happy with the points, but not with Enzo taking the penalty. Bruno scores his this week, to the delight of his owners, but leaves it late. Liverpool edge pass Arsenal with a rocket from Szoboszlai and West Ham cause an upset at Forest, in a result no-one saw coming! **Sorry for the disruption on tonight's Pod - Sam's ok, but really felt very unwell during the live stream. On the return of Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by two of the promoted Correspondents, Burnley fan Jack Toner and Sunderland fan Spencer Barrowman ahead of a crucial meeting between the clubs at Turf Moor on Saturday. There's reflection on contrasting fortunes at the weekend, with the high of Sunderland's 3-0 win and the disappointment of defeat for Burnley at Tottenham, where despite playing well in spells, they were eventually well beaten. And they have some very tough fixtures to come after the weekend. With that in mind, have Burnley got to win already when considering their upcoming schedule and with the other two promoted teams having already won? Do they change system? And how might Sunderland approach this tactically? In this video I take you through the latest news, hot-topics and answer your FPL questions ahead of Gameweek 2. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Here is what a draft would look like if you are playing either chip this week!
Gameweek 1 is nine tenths done and though there are some outstanding scores out there it has been a tough weekend for many FPL managers with a number of popular FPL assets blanking. All 9 games covered in detail and a theme from the weekend is a number of cheap midfield options performing well, and none have attracted more attention in the FPL Community than Manchester City's Tijani Reijnders, who is already up to 5.6 and likely to see continued investment. So was his dominant performance at Wolves a one-off or a sign of things to come? Antoine Semenyo and Hugo Ekitike are also early price risers following returns in an exciting Friday opener where there were mixed returns for FPL managers. Plus, players on radar for those on a Free Hit in GW2 feature not just Arsenal, Bournemouth and City assets, but those from Chelsea and Villa who blanked in 0-0 draws could be worth keeping ahead of respective trips to Brentford and West Ham who both conceded three on the road. So too, did Burnley, and there was more tactical variety on show from Thomas Frank's Tottenham who may well change system again at the weekend when they go to The Etihad. Suj and James discuss Chip Strategy with a detailed look at opportunities during the first half of the season to use the Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain Chips. There's a search for opportunities, caution offered for overplanning for the Bench Boost, circumstances that can make Free Hits appeal to some but not offers. How much weightage should be put into planning for a Bench Boost or should we just hope it falls into place? Two key Wildcard periods covered and there's coverage of an awareness of 'safe weeks' and danger weeks for Chip coverage. Waipa District Council is pushing for feral cats to added to DOC's predator free hit list. There are an estimated 2.4 million feral cats in New Zealand compared to 1.2 million pet cats, and about 200,000 stray cats. They are considered a significant threat to native wildlife, particularly birds. Now the conservation department has asked for feedback on whether feral cats should be a so-called target species. Waipa District councillor Marcus Gower spoke to Lisa Owen.
Clayton joins James this week on the Gameweek Review Podcast to discuss all the weekend's games, which included more misfiring premiums, but there were good returns to be had elsewhere and that included a haul for Ebe Eze against a hapless and rotated Tottenham. For Tottenham and Manchester United (who were beaten by West Ham) all focus is on the Europa League Final which is why Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer are likely to be so popular this week for Fantasy managers! Should they be under captaincy consideration? Plus, Arsenal pulled it back at Anfield where Trent Alexander-Arnold was booed, Newcastle beat 10 man Chelsea who saw Nicolas Jackson sent off, Villa, Brentford and Brighton picked up important wins, whilst Forest slipped up against Leicester and Southampton somehow held Manchester City and a returning Erling Haaland to claw themselves to 12 points. Fantasy targets for what remains covered, the pull of rolling for GW38, what will Palace and City do next week following the FA Cup Final, players to consider for those with a Free Hit left and lots more... A good weekend for Kevin's, as De Bruyne's winner sealed victory for Manchester City against Wolves, and Brentford's Schade got two in victory for Brentford against Manchester United. But it was largely another week where many popular assets underperformed again. Suj and James review all the weekend games which included a surprise loss for Arsenal against Bournemouth and the top 5 race intensified with 6 teams scrapping for four places; wjilst there's still a Conference League place for four other teams to potentially fight over. So there are some with plenty still to play for, but for others a limp finish to the line beckons. That will likely include West Ham and Tottenham who played out a drab draw in the Planet FPL Derby. And Tottenham are in the news for Fantasy purposes today with confirmation that their fixture at Villa will be brought forward but remains in Gameweek 37, meaning there will be no more doubles. Solutions offered for those still with the Triple Captaincy and Free Hit covered, Suj nearly hit glory with his Assman but options are now limited for 36, James discusses his Wildcard and transfer targets for what's left are covered throughout the Podcast. It's been a great Gameweek so far for FPL managers who used their Free Hit chip as popular picks returned big
Just as back-to-back Double Gameweeks end, FPL managers now have Blank Gameweek 34 to navigate, and lots of Free Hit chips are expected to be played
Hail Cheaters! The FPL doubles of GW33 are still in full swing, but thus far it's been a story of single game-weekers—the likes of Mbeumo, Bowen, and Cunha. Ollie Watkins was, admittedly, a surprise hero against Newcastle, and fantasy investors will be hoping for another start midweek at the Etihad. Then it's all eyes on GW34 and the tricky blank fixtures for Arsenal, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Manchester City. With Josh navigating the deadline with just two free transfers, and Brandon unleashing his Free Hit, it's two different strategies that should inform managers in any position.
