Following India’s recent victory against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, handshakes were absent and India refused to accept the trophy. Andrew Mueller plots the course of these nations’ geopolitical tensions on the cricket field. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Asia Cup has never been straightforward. Scheduled every two years, it often slips away — undone by border tensions and government quarrels. This year, despite tensions between India and Pakistan, the tournament managed to be held. The young Indian team, missing the usual veterans, went unbeaten. Pakistan made the final a nail-biting contest: a reminder of why this rivalry endures and is eagerly awaited by people of two countries that were once one.Sadly, the clashes between these famed rivals were overshadowed by fighter-plane gestures and snubbed handshakes. India lifted nothing but an imaginary trophy. They had won every match but refused the silverware from the Pakistani head of the Asian Cricket Council. Why do the shadows of politics so often creep onto a field made for sport? To make sense of this, we turn to KC Vijaya Kumar, Sports Editor of The Hindu, who has spent decades tracing this much-cherished rivalry on the pitch and behind the scenes. The Asia Cup turned out to be an ugly affair. Dominated by off-field drama, the continental tournament made headlines for the wrong reasons more often than not. India and Pakistan met three times, including a historic first in the final. Yet, their battles will be remembered more for the tensions on the field than for any memorable cricketing moments. From the handshake snub to provocative gestures by Pakistan players, the India-Pakistan clashes were a disappointment for purists of the sport. India, however, simply took a stand they believed in. Pakistan, on the other hand, opted for the ugly route, focusing on theatrics rather than cricket. The drama reached its peak on the final day when Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi walked away with the trophy after India refused to accept it from him. In the latest episode of the Sledging Room podcast, Akshay Ramesh, Alan John, and Kingshuk Kusari reflect on what was arguably one of the most controversial cricket tournaments in history. Tune In! In this episode of the show, Baldy and Stu recap the India v Pakistan Asia Cup final and take a brief look at all the cricket to look forward to over the next few months. We start the show by talking about Pakistan's impressive start, with Farhan and Fakhar combining to reach a score of 113-1. And then the wheels fell off as a mixture of excellent spin bowling and poor shot selection led to the collapse of all collapses, which saw Pakistan crumble to be all out for 146. It wasn't all smooth sailing for India, though, who found themselves in trouble at 20-3 before Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube played their part in what proved to be an exciting final and one which saw India crowned as Asia Cup champions in 2025. Do Pakistan have enough building blocks for a 2026 T20 World Cup challenge? And is SKY's spot under threat? To round out the show, we make quick mention of a few things we're looking forward to in what shapes as an exciting finish to the calendar year in the world of cricket. We'll be back in your feed again soon to discuss the week that was, which should include India v West Indies, the Chappell-Hadlee T20 series and the Women's World Cup, among other things. Can Pakistan learn from Sri Lanka's approach and push India all the way? Next we turn the The Ashes, as England named their squad this week. Were there any surprises? Any spots up for grabs leading into the first Test? And will it be strong enough to challenge the Aussies in their own backyard? Join us for a recap of the England vs. Ireland T20I series, where England showcased a dominant performance, winning 2-0 overall. We'll highlight Phil Salt's explosive batting displays, including his incredible 89 off 46 balls against Ireland, which followed a record-breaking 141 not out against South Africa just days before the series. Did Salt cement his place as a T20 superstar with these sensational performances? Later, we'll delve into the contentious 2025 Asia Cup, focusing on the controversial caught-behind dismissal of Fakhar Zaman in the India vs. Pakistan match. We'll unpack why Pakistan filed an official complaint to the ICC regarding the TV umpire's decision and the earlier refusal by Indian players to shake hands with the Pakistan team at the toss and after the game. Bits and Pieces returns after its biggest break to-date, to somehow summon the reserves of energy and enthusiasm to review the utterly drab Asia Cup, where India and Pakistan's shallow off-field posturing, and even more shallow on-field hostilities have done precious little to overshadow the insipidity of what was once a top-drawer on-field rivalry.Join Tony, Iman, Nitin, Bisi, Max and Tareque as we banter on the pointlessness of most of what passes off as international cricket now, and reckon with the sport we once loved, that continues to lose its lustre.
In this episode of the show, Raj and Stu discuss India v Pakistan at the Asia Cup, the Black Caps' T20 squad to take on Australia, NZ A's tour to South Africa and the start of Australia A's tour to India. We start the show once again by talking about another dominant Indian performance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup - this time in the Super 4 stage. Last week it was two brilliant allrounders - Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel - who made important contributions for India, but this time the spark came from Shivam Dube, who slowed Pakistan's momentum after a rather sloppy start to the match. There's also more praise for Abhishek Sharma, as well as discussion around the controversial catch by Sanju Samson. Next it's a Black Caps focus - first the T20 squad named to take on Australia in the Chappell-Hadlee series, in which Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Kane Williamson and a host of other key names are unavailable for the Kiwi side. We discuss how the NZ T20 side might take shape over the course of the home summer, with an eye to the ICC T20 World Cup in February. Is it a good thing that we can't name the Black Caps' best XI? Or a concern that so many roles feel up for grabs this close to a major event? To round out the show, first we give a big tick to NZ A's overall tour to South Africa. Things started slow with the white ball, and the final Test ended in a fairly subdued draw, but the likes of Rhys Mariu, Dale Phillips, Curtis Heaphy, Adi Ashok and Matt Fisher all made cases for higher honours over the years to come. We also quickly touch on Australia A's tour to India, in which we saw bat dominate ball in the first Test of that series, with Sam Konstas, Dhruv Jurel & Devdutt Padikkal among those to impress. We'll be back in your feed again next week to discuss more stories from the world of cricket, including the Asia Cup & more from New Zealand. Nikesh Rughani and Aatif Nawaz discuss all the latest stories from the 2025 Asia Cup. They discuss the further drama around Pakistan which saw them play their final group match against the UAE, despite the fixture looking in jeopardy following on from the handshake incident after their fixture against India.Plus, Mark Machado joins them to discuss Sri Lanka's strength in depth as they qualify for the Super 4s stage of the competition.
When Pakistan finally took the field against the UAE in Dubai on Wednesday, the Asia Cup match began under a cloud that had little to do with form or tactics. An hour-long delay, frantic calls between Lahore and Dubai, and the sudden spectre of a boycott turned routine pre-match preparations into a full-blown media circus. This episode was not an isolated burst of indignation. It was the latest in a familiar pattern: a board that prizes theatrics and brinkmanship over consistency, with players left carrying the collateral damage. Fans can debate whether the handshake snub was provocation, misunderstanding, or politicisation by India. The bigger question is simpler: did the PCB protect its players, or use them as bargaining chips? The answer is grimly obvious. Yes, there is merit in defending players from perceived slights. But there is a world of difference between a quiet procedural protest and a public demand that risks boycotting a tournament. One seeks resolution. The other seeks optics. The PCB chose optics — and the players bore the weight.
