Joe Root has finally got the monkey of his back with an irrepressible hundred at the Gabba, his first in Australia and his 40th overall. It was the centrepiece of a compelling first day in Brisbane which England looked like squandering at several points, but was saved by Root's dedication and skill and an unexpected unbroken last wicket stand between him and Jofra Archer. Simon Hughes and Simon Mann are joined by Matt Prior to reflect on a day when Mitchell Starc became the world's leading left arm wicket taker. #ashes #england #australia #root Learn more about your ad choices. England recover from early trouble to reach 9/325 on Day 1 of the Gabba day-night Test, driven by a superb unbeaten century from Joe Root (135*) and a relentless spell from Mitchell Starc (6/71). Australia's selection calls (no Lyon, Cummins rested) and a dramatic final-hour stall become key storylines, while standout fielding moments and some self-inflicted English dismissals shape a seesawing day. The consensus: honours even, on a pitch that promises runs for those who bat well over the next two days. Selection shock & conditions at the Gabba — Australia's XI explained; Lyon left out, Cummins rested; pitch read and game plan. (2:18) Starc's opening burst & England's recovery — Two early blows, then Root–Crawley rebuild. (7:17) Root's milestone & England's middle-order misses — Brook and Jacks gift wickets; Root anchors to a first Aussie ton. (18:26) Final-hour chaos & verdict on Day 1 — Archer's late surge, Australia's puzzling tactics, and the wrap-up. (23:22) Cricket Unfiltered Merchandise is Here! One key metric could tell you immediately whether a multifamily real estate investment is worth buying—but most people ignore it. It's not cash flow, it's not cap rate, and it's probably something you've overlooked dozens of times. Joe Root helped grow his family's multifamily portfolio and manages over 100 properties using this metric. Joe left the glitz of a corporate Wall Street career when he realized his family's apartment portfolio was better than the big city life. Multifamily management quickly became his new obsession. During the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, Joe stepped in to manage (and buy) foreclosed properties that were barely staying afloat. Through 20 years of multifamily experience, he's pinpointed the most overlooked markets in the country, how to dodge rent control and get your own city government to actively fight against it, and the #1 mistake you can make when screening tenants. He's sharing it all, plus his key multifamily metric, in this episode. Insights from today's episode: The one screening metric Joe uses to determine if a multifamily investment is worth it What to do when one of your tenants turns your building into a rave venue An underrated area of the country that multifamily investors shouldn't ignore A sign that you're managing your portfolio inefficiently (and it could cost you) Why Joe's team is moving into new development for even greater returns — Connect with Joe on LinkedIn East Superior Real Estate Partners Are you a high-net-worth investor with capital to deploy in the next 12 months? #OZWATCH: 3/4 - Ashes Preparation: Psychological Tactics and English Threats The pre-Ashes period involves psychological tactics. Australian fast bowler Josh Hazelwood publicly praised England's batting lineup as "one of the most fearsome ever". This is interpreted as a psychological maneuver to either mock England, make them overconfident, or encourage them to "rest on their laurels" and be less prepared, giving Australia an advantage. The English team is expected to be "very, very strong" after a "soul search" following past Ashes losses. Joe Root, a "very good batter" who has adopted a more conservative style, is considered one of Australia's "biggest threats" and has mentored many other English players. Harry Brookke is also mentioned as a key player for England. JEREMY ZAKIS, NEW SOUTH WALES. #FRIENDSOFHISTORYDEBATINGSOCIETY
