In this episode of Cricket Matters, we dive into a topic that's close to every batter's heart: what actually counts as a good batting average in club cricket? We crunch the numbers, challenge the myths, and share a reality check that every aspiring player needs to hear. You'll Learn:Why averages alone don't tell the full story. We explore how focusing only on your batting average can be misleading and why it's crucial to consider 50+ scores and conversion rates for a true performance assessment. What elite player stats reveal about consistency. James breaks down test, ODI, and T20 data from cricket legends like Tendulkar, Kohli, and Joe Root to show how often even the greats “fail”—and what that means for club players. How to benchmark yourself as a club cricketer. You'll get a data-driven framework for what a “good” batting performance looks like depending on your role in the lineup, from opener to tail-ender.The mindset shift needed for performance improvement. We unpack why many club cricketers overrate themselves based on one good knock and how to take ownership of your form with honesty and data.Key Takeaways:50+ scores are more important than average alone. A high average can be inflated by not-outs or low-pressure runs. What really matters is how often you're converting starts into match-defining scores.Even the greatest cricketers get out a lot. Legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting scored 50+ runs in only about 35% of innings. That means failing 65% of the time is still elite performance.Joe Root and Virat Kohli are statistical outliers. Their incredible consistency, with nearly 50% of innings over 50 runs, puts them on a level unmatched even among the top 10 run-scorers of all time.Club performance must be evaluated across 10 innings. One-off big scores don't prove form. Patterns over 10 innings give a clearer picture of who's performing—and who just got lucky.Your division should reflect your performance level. If you're averaging 80 but playing low-division cricket, you're not being challenged. Conversely, low scores at high levels may mean it's time to regroup.Quotes:“In cricket, the stats don't lie—and they don't lie over time.”“Everyone remembers their 74, but forgets their 12 and 3.”“Batting average without conversion stats is only half the story.”Find James on: Instagram: @jamesbreese Twitter: @_jamesbreese To learn more about Cricket Matters and download your FREE copy of The High-Performance Handbook, please visit www.cricketmatters.com
England India Daily, 1st Test, Headingley, Review: Daniel Norcross and Ben Jones assess a wild Test match in Leeds that was… actually quite predictable when you break it down day by day. Is this the end of batting first in England? Daniel seems to think so. Joe Root continues to be unnervingly nerveless in run chases. Looking to Edgbaston, how will the bowling lineups look? Will Akash Deep or Arshdeep Singh be called in to bolster the pace attack? Will we see Atkinson return for England or, whisper it, Jofra Archer? For India in general, will Shubman find his voice in the field, and will his troops be able to up their intensity in the field? In this episode of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy daily review, Jamie and Baldy cover rivalry round! England and Australia faced off overnight in the highest scoring game in Champions Trophy history, and preview the face-off between India and Pakistan tonight in the greatest rivalry in cricket. There were records galore in Lahore in a benign surface that had both sides looking like nine an over was gettable at any time. Duckett provided fireworks with the bat for 165, Joe Root did Joe Root things and for a few brief hours England held the record for the highest score in the Champions Trophy. For Australia, the not-so-household names shone brightest, and for Binksy and Jamie the solace of England-born Josh Inglis hitting the match-winning hundred will hold little comfort. England now face must-win games against Afghanistan and South Africa. For India and Pakistan the question on both Jamie and Baldy's minds was how much Pakistan could lift emotionally against India. India are almost certainly favoured in Dubai conditions, but can Pakistan pull out something special in the UAE in their home tournament? Like England, Pakistan are in win-or-bust mode for the rest of the tournament. With their backs to the wall, will this be when Pakistan's star shines brightest? For both pundits, the Indian spin strength in the middle overs will be where the game could be decided. We'll be back in your feed tomorrow and again with regular updates throughout the tournament. Neil Manthorp is joined by the former England fast bowler Steve Harmison for another busy show. They debate if Joe Root should return to England's T20 side after a successful SA20 for the Paarl Royals, and whether he can manage as an all-format player at 34. Pakistan Cricket Writer and Broadcaster Behram Qazi joins the show to look back at their 120-run defeat to the West Indies in the second Test in Multan, with the visitors winning a Test in Pakistan for the first time since 1990. He also gives an update on the Champions Trophy. ESPNCricinfo's Valkerie Baynes reflects on England's heavy defeat to Australia in the Women's Ashes, and discusses what next for captain Heather Knight and Head Coach Jon Lewis. And they round up the week's other stories, as Rocky Flintoff scores a century for England Lions in Australia, and they bring you The Final Word. Hosted on Acast. In this episode of the Top Order Podcast it's an England-centric view as Binksy and Jamie review England's red- and white-ball performances in 2024 and look forward to a mouthwatering 10 tests against old enemies Australia and India in 2025. The boys dissect what they want to see as Bazball disciples and look at the personnel England should and might use in 2025. There is confidence in Joe Root, Harry Brook and Gus Atkinson, but question marks surrounding Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope and the fitness of talismanic skipper Ben Stokes. With no Baldy to respond, Binksy and Jamie dream of recapturing the urn in Sydney as they forecast the year 2025. The boys also discuss the dramatic decline of the England men's white-ball side and ponder whether a partnership of Brendon McCullum and Jos Buttler can revive fortunes in an ICC Champions Trophy year. Two big Tests to talk about on this week's episode of The Cricket Podcast. England were taking on New Zealand in the second of three matches, and they came up good again. Joe Root and Harry Brook scored the runs, prompting a conversation about who really is the world's best player. On the bowling side Gus Atkinson took a hat-trick and Brydon Carse ran riot again. AND! Recrords were broken as England piled on 823 to beat Pakistan. Pakistan should have been safe after a mammoth first innings score of their own, but in the second innings they wilted under pressure.
