A fan's podcast covering The Hundred cricket tournament.
The Hundred's women start their tournament on 11 August 2022, with the Welsh Fire women surely keen to improve on their last place finish in 2021. Aussies will be central to their chances, with the addition of experienced Rachael Haynes and exciting Annabel Sutherland. But it could be the out-of-favour England star Tammy Beaumont who makes all the difference: can she prove the doubters wrong? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred 2022 women tournament starts on 11 August 2022. The Kate Cross led Manchester Originals will want to pick up the momentum they had at the end of 2021, where they won the last three group games. here are some interesting stories in the squad, with overseas signings Lizelle Lee, Deandra Dottin and Amy Satherthwaite all involved in issues with their countries. But the bowling might be the real story with this team, spearheaded by the imperious Sophie Ecclestone. This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
Can the Southern Brave women go one better this year and win The Hundred? Rich and Tom think they should; they've added awesome talent in Tahlia McGrath, Smriti Mandhana and Amanda-Jade Wellington. That complements established and breakthrough England stars like Danni Wyatt, Sophia Dunkley, Maia Bouchier, Lauren Bell and Freya Kemp. Who can possibly stop them? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred 2022 women tournament starts on 11 August 2022, and London Spirit will be keen to go a touch better than last time, when they just missed out on the eliminator stages. They've suffered a big blow though with an injury to captain Heather Knight. Tammy Beaumont has also moved on, seeking a bigger role at the Welsh Fire. So it might be down to some of new faces: Beth Mooney is a top quality Australian batter, but it is perhaps the young Kiwi superstar Amelia Kerr who can lead the Spirit to success in 2022. This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
In less than 24 hours the women will join The Hundred. Birmingham Phoenix lost their early momentum in 2021... can they push further in 2022? Sophie Devine and Elysse Perry are crucial for that charge, along with England stars like Amy Jones. But should they have let Shefali Verma go? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
In less than 24 hours the women will join The Hundred. Trent Rockets will be looking to improve somewhat on their 2021, and have made some big signings accordingly. There are none bigger than superstar Aussies Meg Lanning and Alana King. They will be well backed up by the fearsome English players Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver, as well as South Africa's Mignon du Preez. But will their style suit the famously free scoring Trent Bridge ground? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
Reigning women's champions Oval Invincibles begin their title defence of The Hundred on 11 August 2022. The star South African names of Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk should be back. But will the loss of players such as Tash Farrant be covered by the continued development of Alice Capsey? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred's women start their tournament on 11 August 2022. Northern Superchargers will be feature in the first game against the defending champions. Key to their success will surely be their awesome top-order: Jemimah Rodrigues, Alyssa Healy, Laura Wolvaardt and Alice Davidson-Richards. But what kind of score will they need to post to help out a less star-studded bowling attack? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred starts today with Southern Brave looking to defend their title. Tom and Rich make their predictions for the tournament: who will win, who will lose. They also pick out some names to watch as the tournament develops... and rant a little bit about Jonny Bairstow! This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022, and Birmingham Phoenix will be hoping to repeat their group topping efforts of 2021. It might be a tough ask though as the squad seems to have caught the injury bug: Chris Woakes is working back to fitness, Adam Milne (the Kiwi quick bowler) has had Achilles heel problems, Olly Stone is confirmed out... There is still quality though, and can you even really rule out any team with Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali and Matthew Wade? Plus, there is always the Imran Tahir factor...! This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022, and Trent Rockets will want to match last year's strong performance. They have kept the core of their squad to do that, centred on the superstar that is Rashid Khan. Even when he is on Afghanistan duty, they will bring in the very experienced South Africa international Tabraiz Shamsi. In the batting, they will hope domestic stars Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Alex Hales live up to their price tags. And, for at least a few games, there is some bloke called Joe Root who we quite like...! This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022, and Oval Invincibles have assembled a really well balanced squad. Mohammad Hasnain is an exciting addition to work with the all-rounder Curran brothers and Sunil Narine. Plenty of batting power in the mix too, particularly if Jason Roy can re-discover some form. Might they make it to the eliminators this year? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022, and it will start without Ben Stokes. He's pulled out of the tournament (as well as retiring from England ODIs) to balance his work load as the new Captain of England's test team. That is fair enough, but where does it leave the Northern Superchargers? Rich and Tom think it leaves the squad looking older and more patchy than most. Faf du Plessis had a great IPL 2022, but Dwayne Bravo, David Wiese and Wahab Riaz haven't been so hot. Maybe Adil Rashid can repeat his 2021 heroics and become the difference? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022. No-one will be watched more closely through the tournament than Jos Buttler. The new England ODI and T20 Captain had a sensational IPL in 2022. But form has dipped since he returned to the UK, and he'll be keen to take his team to glory in The Hundred. He's got some big hitters alongside too: Andre Russell, Phil Salt, Laurie Evans. But it's not clear what Rich thinks putting Wanindu Hasaranga in at #3 in the batting... they'll need his magic bowling to take the wickets! This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022. Since a disappointing 2021, the Welsh Fire franchise have made some big changes... If England duties allow, the batting firepower looks awesome with Jonny Bairstow, Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett, David Miller... but what happens when test duties start calling? Will Adam Zampa prove the doubters wrong once and for all? And will Naseem Shah's pace or Noor Ahmad's mystery spin be the best option? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022. London Spirit finished bottom of the group stage in 2021 and suffered the tragic loss of their head coach Shane Warne over the winter. How will the team return in 2022? Rich and Tom think the squad certainly looks better on paper. Will #1 draft pick Kieron Pollard live up to the price tag? Will Eoin Morgan rediscover his form without the England captaincy? Or is it up to Glenn Maxwell to provide the star quality? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The Hundred tournament starts on 3 August 2022. Southern Brave men are the reigning champions and head coach Mahela Jayawardene has stuck with the winning formula, with a lot of the squad carried over from 2021. Can Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis and James Vince pile on the runs? Will Chris Jordan, George Garton and Tymal Mills tie down the opposition? And does the middle order look a little out of form? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
When it comes to The Hundred, Matt Roller is perhaps the best informed journalist going. Rich and Tom enjoyed a chat about all things The Hundred with him, focussing on the recent draft. Why were some players left undrafted? What styles of play will we see in 2022? How much cricket will we see from the overseas stars? As the ECB's current "CMJ Young Cricket Journalist Of The Year" and an Assistant Editor as ESPN CricInfo, Matt regularly breaks the news on The Hundred before anyone else.
With the players list announced and the draft just days away, Tom and Rich speculate on how The Hundred 2022 Men's draft will play out.
Rich and Tom react to some interesting decisions. There is no sign of Shefali Verma at Birmingham Phoenix, Tammy Beaumont is missing from London Spirit and the Trent Rockets have had a clear-out! Who has the most work to do before all of the contracts are signed and announced on 30 March 2022?
It turns out that a lot of the rumours were right: Glenn Maxwell will go to London Spirit but Quinton de Kock is not retained. Rashid Khan is back but there is no sign of some big West Indian names. Every team has left themselves work to do at the draft on 30 March 2022, including at least one top-tier pay bracket slot... will those spots be filled by the biggest names in cricket?
The official lists of retained players for The Hundred in 2022 has yet to be released. Rich and Tom discuss the rumours and the updates as the draft on 30 March 2022 approaches...
We have had seven days to digest the results of the 2022 IPL mega-auction... and it's fair to say that Tom and Rich think some teams have done better than others. Time for some updated power rankings... Have Punjab Kings really broken their tradition of bad auctions? Have Mumbai Indians blown the budget on the wrong players? Let us know what you think: fansofthehundred@gmail.com
It is perhaps the most radical shake-up of the IPL in recent years. Next weekend, 10 franchises will attempt to pick their final squads for the 2022 edition of the world's biggest T20 league. Rich and Tom discuss the retentions, the prices and the process. Rich also gives his 'power rankings' of the teams.
The Hundred 2022 is on! Rich and Tom discuss the key dates: the start, the final and the draft. Excited much? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
There will be some amazing short-format cricket to enjoy in 2022, in another busy calendar years of domestic and international events. Rich and Tom preview the dates to watch out for, the stories that might develop and the best of the action. With a women's ODI World Cup, a men's T20 World Cup, a bigger IPL, a Commonwealth Games and, of course, the return of The Hundred, there will be loads to enjoy throughout the year.
It's been a busy year of short format cricket. In this pod, we look back on the most memorable performances, the stand out players and the best matches from both the men's and women's game, plus a look forward to 2022.
Australia's T20 party is back! The 11th edition of the men's Big Bash League will run from 5th December 21 - 28th January 2022. Rich and Tom discuss the teams, the schedule and some of the unique rules. Will the Sydney Sixers make it three in a row? What will become of the English contingent? And which teams could spring a shock?
Australia have won the ICC T20 World Cup in style against New Zealand. It's humble pie for Rich, Oli and Tom who didn't rate their chances... unless it was all because of Aaron Finch's lucky coins? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The semi-finalists for the ICC T20 World Cup are confirmed, so Tom and Rich preview the games and give their reactions to the last of the Super 12 stage. How will injuries change the England line-up? What can the New Zealand team do to slow down the English power-batting? Will Pakistan continue their blistering form or can Australia continue their building form? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
As the ICC T20 World Cup Super 12 stage reaches half way, Rich, Oli and Tom discuss the form so far and the future. Have England had it easy or are they as good as they look? Are Pakistan now the tournament favourites? What can India do to qualify after their poor start? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
A review of the first weekend of ICC T20 World Cup 2021 action from Rich, Oli and Tom. Superb bowling from Shaheen Shah Afridi set Pakistan up for a memorable run chase against a below-par India. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan won it in style by 10 wickets. Sri Lanka tracked down a challenging chase of 172, with Asalanka starring for a previously underestimated batting order. The West Indies' superstar batters fail spectacularly against England's spin attack of Moeen Ali and Rashid Khan, leaving the tournament favourites a simple chase for a big win. Australia make hard work of their response to a poor total from South Africa but get there in the end. Did South Africa get it wrong tactically in the final overs? This is The Hundred Club: a community for fans of short format cricket.
The T20 Cricket World Cup 2021 Super 12 groups are set! The qualifying groups have played some scintillating cricket this week; Rich and Tom review what they have seen. Sri Lanka's bowling has impressed, Scotland have sprung a big surprise, Bangladesh have warmed up and Namibia have created history. Meanwhile, the Netherlands and Ireland have disappointed a touch but perhaps all of these teams should have been given a chance against the Super 12 teams too? The result is a beautifully set Super 12 stage, with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka joining an already fearsome Group 1 of Australia, England, South Africa and West Indies. Scotland and Namibia however might fancy some upsets in Group 2, with Afghanistan, India, New Zealand and Pakistan.
No sooner has the IPL concluded than the T20 World Cup and the Women's Big Bash League start... the great short format cricket continues to roll. Rich and Tom digest CSK's win in IPL, and ask whether this is the end of an era for a team that has got used to success over the years? Why couldn't the KKR middle order contribute and how disappointed should DC be with their week?
There is just one week of the regular IPL 2021 season left before the eliminators and finals. With CSK and DC already qualified, and RCB looking good for third, who can grab that all important fourth place in the table? Tom and Rich get right into the IPL action this week. It seems to be the domestic Indian players who are making the most of the tournament, but which potential T20 World Cup stars are hitting form at the right time? There is also a chance to look forward to English domestic cricket in 2022: can the ECB improve the scheduling of matches?!
Tom and Rich are back to review the latest in Men and Women's white ball cricket. India's Women finally end Australia's 26-match winning run in the 3rd ODI in Mackay, while here in the UK the Southern Vipers defend the Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy with a 3 wicket win over the Northern Diamonds and the boys review the first week back of the IPL before checking in on England Women's series against New Zealand. They wrap up with their thoughts on England's cancellation of the white ball tour to Pakistan, originally scheduled for October. After a fantastic T20 Blast finals day, Rich and Tom discuss Kent's victory over Somerset. First up thought, there is also the small matter of the return of the IPL. With just under half the competition left, who can win the interrupted, rescheduled and relocated tournament in the United Arab Emirates? And who can stake a late claim to a World Cup squad place? Last Wednesday also saw the culmination of the Caribbean Premier League, with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots beating St Lucia Kings in a tight and exciting match. There is also the last round of the Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy matches to enjoy and the first Women's ODI between England and NZ: who will win that five match series? The ICC Men's T20 World Cup start in just one month and the squads have been announced. In this episode of The Hundred Club, Rich and Tom analyse the squads and make some predictions for the tournament. Who can challenge England and West Indies in Group 1? Do the Australians have the form and youth to win a T20 World Cup before the current generation retire? Can anyone challenge India in Group 2? Will Afghanistan be able to participate in the competition, or will Bangladesh win Group B to mix up an open looking league stage? The Hundred 2021 may have finished but Tom and Rich return to review all things short-format cricket. With the Caribbean Premier League underway, the Charlotte Edwards Trophy approaching its conclusion and the Vitality T20 Blast quarter finals there is plenty to discuss. We also have a look at the England women's squad for the forthcoming games against New Zealand and take a look at some of the viewing figures for The Hundred. Did it do what it was supposed to do?
The Hundred 2021 has finished, with Oval Invincibles women and Southern Brave men claiming the inaugural titles. Rich, Oli and Tom take a look back at the final matches and at the tournament as a whole. Who impressed you, and where does the tournament go from here? Have your say in the comments. Chris Benjamin is one of the most amazing cricket stories to come out of The Hundred. He has gone from university student to Warwickshire's second XI to Birmingham Phoenix in just a couple of months. But he has grasped every opportunity. In his first match against London Spirit, he hit a match winning innings, was named Hero Of The Match and had Kevin Petersen drooling with his inventive shots. Since then, the impressive Birmingham Phoenix have swept aside their competition and on Saturday 21 August 2021 Chris will play his first ever match at Lord's... in the final of The Hundred. Rich and Tom ask Chris all about that journey, where it can take him next and whether he would rather face a fast ball from Marchant de Lange or Tymal Mills! Tom and Rich chat about Round 7 of the action in The Hundred and explore where that leaves the tables as the teams enter the final round of the group stages. It turns out to be really complicated, but it looks like 5-6 teams in both the women's and the men's competition still have a shot of the finals. Liz Russell was a late addition to The Hundred and the Northern Superchargers. She has not waited to make an impact though, taking important wickets and bowling economically as the team look set to reach the eliminators on 20 Aug 21. Between them stands the small matter of the regional grudge match against the Manchester Originals. Rich and Tom ask: who will win? This is The Hundred Club, a fan community focussed on cricket's new tournament. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/RC4VoBSw5b0
England fast bowler, Manchester Originals captain, broadcaster and podcaster, Kate Cross has been one of the faces of The Hundred. She was kind enough to find a bit of time in her incredibly busy schedule to talk to Rich and Tom about The Hundred, leading the Manchester Originals and how to use the interest generated by the tournament to take Women's cricket forward.
Simon Katich played 56 tests for Australia, but is now a successful coach having led the Perth Scorchers to the Big Bash title. He is currently head coach of the Manchester Originals. Oli caught up with him the day after the Originals defeat to the Spirit to talk about The Hundred so far, the big games to come and if Simon has ever faced an Alex Hales moment of his own.
Tom and Oli discuss the action from round 6 of The Hundred... until Rich then joins in the fun. It's a slightly chaotic update, with the focus turning from the disappointments of rain to the action in the tournament tables. Shafali Verma seems to be hitting form at just the right time for Birmingham Phoenix, but will the loss of the red-hot Moeen Ali hurt their men's prospects? Did Shane Warne's London Spirit leave it too late to try their young talent? And who had the more embarrassing injury: Alex Hales or Eoin Morgan?
Lauren Bell has been a breakout star of The Hundred cricket tournament so far. With the scalps of Nat Sciver, Jemimah Rodrigues and Hayley Matthews already claimed, Lauren's ability to take the big wickets has been crucial to the success of table topping Southern Brave women. Rich chats with Lauren about success, technique and England prospects. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/6w4_BGM8Ia8 Follow us on twitter: https://twitter.com/thehundredclub1
Welsh Fire women are a team on the up, with two wins from the last two. Right in the middle of that success has been all-rounder Georgia Hennessy. Georgia joins Tom and Rich for a chat about the squad just ahead of their big game against Trent Rockets. Has there been a change of approach after two losses early in the tournament? How do you make the most of squad stars such as Sarah Taylor and Hayley Matthews? And will there be some fireworks when they meet the big characters like Katherine Brunt? This is The Hundred Club, a fan community focussed on cricket's new tournament. Regular content, streams and updates too. Tom and Rich discuss the action from round 5 of The Hundred as the tournament approaches its final stages. The women's competition continues to produce high quality matches and a few surprises, with stars like Tammy Beaumont, Nat Sciver and Jemimah Rodrigues continuing to shine. On the men's side, the London Spirit remain winless (much to Rich's frustration) but the other seven teams remain in the hunt for a place in the top three. Wahab Riaz justifies his late arrival with a scintillating display of white ball bowling and the batting of Birmingham Phoenix looks fearsome with Moeen Ali getting sterling support from youngsters Chris Benjamin and Will Smeed. There is just enough time to talk about the England versus India test match too... Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/xm5DxYTvjFc Follow us on twitter: https://twitter.com/thehundredclub1
A fascinating chat with the former England international and ICC recognised umpire Sue Redfern. Oli, Rich and Tom learn what cricket's new tournament looks like from the umpire's point of view. How have the changes to the laws and format affected play? What can the competition do for women's cricket? And what does a top-level umpire keep in their pockets? This is The Hundred Club, a fan community focussed on cricket's new tournament. Regular content, streams and updates too. Every team has now played 4 games in both the Men's and the Women's competition. In this short episode, Rich gives a quick review of the last few days of action and has a look at the standings at the half-way point. Who has one foot in the final at Lord's, who still has all to play for and who's tournament is already over? Listen to the episode to find out.
