This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 19th of May and here are the headlines.1. Supreme Court Rejects Minister's Apology Over Remarks on Colonel Sofiya QureshiThe Supreme Court on Monday rejected Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah's apology over offensive remarks allegedly directed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The court ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter and stayed Shah's arrest until a status report is submitted on May 28. Criticizing Shah, the bench said, “The entire nation is ashamed.” Shah made controversial comments during a speech near Mhow, indirectly referencing Qureshi. The SIT, to be led by an IG-rank officer, must be formed by 10 am Tuesday, per SC instructions.2. India Foils Drone, Missile Attack on Golden Temple by PakistanThe Indian Army revealed Monday that Pakistan attempted a drone and missile strike on Amritsar's Golden Temple and cities across Punjab on May 7–8, following Indian strikes on terrorist camps under Operation Sindoor. At a press event in Amritsar, the Army displayed debris from intercepted drones and missiles. Indian air defense systems, including upgraded L-70 guns and AKASH missiles, neutralized the threats. Officials emphasized the target was religious and civilian sites, underlining Pakistan's retaliatory intent following India's counter-terrorism operation inside Pakistani territory and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.3. BCCI Pulls Out of ACC Events Amid India-Pakistan TensionsAmid escalating India-Pakistan tensions, the BCCI has decided to withdraw from upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournaments, including the Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup and Men's Asia Cup. The ACC is currently chaired by Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, which sources say contributed to India's decision. The move reflects India's intent to diplomatically isolate Pakistan's cricket board. The decision could impact the Asia Cup's feasibility, given the financial weight India brings to global cricket events. Sponsors and broadcasters may also reconsider deals if India stays out of the tournament.4. Bengaluru Faces Waterlogging After Year's Heaviest RainfallHeavy rain lashed Bengaluru for over six hours on Sunday night, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city. Residents described it as the most intense rainfall of the year. Kengeri recorded the highest with 132 mm, according to the Karnataka State Disaster Monitoring Cell. The IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert' for the week, warning of more rain. Traffic police issued advisories for areas in northern Bengaluru including New Bel Road, Yelahanka Circle, Nagawara, and Allalasandra, as commuters dealt with long delays and flooded roads.5. Former President Joe Biden Diagnosed with Advanced Prostate CancerFormer U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office confirmed Sunday. Doctors reported a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating metastasis to the bones, but added that the cancer appears hormone-sensitive, offering some treatment hope. Biden, who left office in January, is undergoing evaluations for further management. Global leaders, including Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed their support. Biden's diagnosis adds a personal and public health dimension to the global conversation on cancer awareness. That's all for today. This was the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Just a week ago, everyone had written off the Mumbai Indians. But with four straight wins and a squad clicking in perfect rhythm, they've roared back into the spotlight. The five-time champions aren't just winning—they're dominating, playing with the swagger and confidence of a team that knows exactly how to conquer titles. In contrast, Rishabh Pant - acquired for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore to lead Lucknow Super Giants - has looked a shadow of his once-destructive self. After nine matches this season, he has mustered just 106 runs, with 63 of those coming in a single knock against CSK. Pant has always thrived when brimming with confidence, but at LSG, he seems jaded and weighed down by expectations. His strike rate of 96.36 is alarmingly low for someone of his caliber. Part of the issue could be his constant shuffle in the batting order, never quite settling into one role. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have retained their spots in the Grade A+ bracket of the BCCI central contracts despite stepping away from T20Is. We break down how the BCCI arrived at that decision. In the latest episode of the Sledging Room podcast, Saurabh Kumar, Kingshuk Kusari, and Alan Jose John dissect the central contracts, Pant's struggles, and Mumbai Indians' roaring comeback in IPL 2025. In this episode of the Top Order Podcast, Raj, Jamie and Stu discuss some of the major talking points from the past couple of weeks, including the apparent proposal to change the Test structure to two tiers, India's 10-point plan towards team harmony, Champions Trophy news, James Vince, Pakistan spinning their way to victory against the West Indies and Jimmy Anderson's love for the game. We open the show by discussing the reports suggesting the boards of England, Australia and India are planning to start a conversation that could lead to a proposal to separate Test cricket into two divisions of seven. With a lot of details still to be determined, we talk about our initial reactions to the idea, how an ideal version of the proposal could work, who might benefit from it and ultimately whether it would be a step forward from the current World Test Championship. From there we move to white-ball cricket and the Champions Trophy, with India naming their squad yesterday. Mohammad Shami returns from injury with Rohit Sharma as captain and the experienced core of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and co. given an opportunity to go one better than the World Cup in 2023. We also discuss the BCCI's 10-point 'Policy Document for Team India', plus England's upcoming white-ball tour. To round out the show, we talk about pitches in Pakistan and batters around the world struggling against spin, the PSL window and how James Vince's decision could lead to more instances of the nomadic cricketer, plus a shout out to Jimmy Anderson as he looks set to return to Lancashire for the county season. A rare opportunity arises when global financial institutions implode: a brief window into how the world really works. There's an opportunity to learn how money is laundered and where it's coming from, which financial instruments or jurisdictions are being used to aid and abet criminals, and which drug lords or even governments are trying to hide what they're up to. In 1991, the Pakistani-owned Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) was shuttered by regulators for helping bad actors the world over move criminal cash. A window was opened, and this week on Whale Hunting, Bradley Hope is joined by a man who had a front-row seat: former IRS and DEA undercover agent Robert Mazur, who was the key witness at the trial of numerous BCCI executives who he befriended while posing as a money launderer for Colombia's Medellin Cartel in the late 1980s. They discuss Robert's time undercover, how he became a central character in the downfall of BCCI and infiltrated Pablo Escobar's notorious cartel, and how he came to realise that one of the banks through which Escobar moved his ill-gotten gains, BCCI, was no anomaly: There are scores of international banks with corporate incentives to provide banking services to dictators, money launderers and even terrorists. Mentioned in this week's episode: Robert Mazur's books about his time undercover: The Infiltrator and The Betrayal The Infiltrator has since been adapted into a feature film starring Breaking Bad's Robert Cranston as Robert Mazur. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 13th of November and here are the headlines. The Supreme Court ruled that demolishing properties without due process, based solely on allegations of crime, violates the rule of law. The court emphasized that executive authorities cannot act as judges, punishing individuals by demolishing their property. Such actions were deemed an overreach of authority. The court directed that specific procedures be followed before demolitions occur. The ruling came during a hearing on petitions challenging property demolitions by state authorities as punishment for alleged criminal involvement. The first phase of Jharkhand's Assembly elections, covering 43 seats, recorded a voter turnout of 46.25% by 1 pm. The seats are in the tribal-dominated South Chotanagpur, northern Palamu, and Kolhan regions, with 20 reserved for Scheduled Tribes and six for Scheduled Castes. The Chatra and Simaria constituencies, located in a backward district, are also voting today. Bypolls are being held in several states, including Kerala, where Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi is making her electoral debut in Wayanad. In response to escalating violence in Manipur, the central government has deployed 20 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to the state. The forces, comprising around 2,000 personnel from CRPF and BSF, will be stationed until November 30 to maintain order. This follows recent clashes, including the killing of suspected militants in Jiribam and the continued disappearance of six individuals from the Meitei community, including three children, after the violence on Monday. The Pakistan government has instructed its cricket board not to accede to India's request to shift the 2025 Champions Trophy games to Dubai. The BCCI had asked for India's matches to be moved due to security concerns. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has stated that, as the host, it will not relocate any games outside Pakistan. The ICC had informed the PCB about India's decision, but the PCB maintains its stance on hosting the event in Pakistan.Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed at least six people, including three young siblings, as the conflict in the region intensifies. In Lebanon, an Israeli strike on an apartment building near Beirut killed six and injured 15. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has decided not to restrict weapons transfers to Israel, citing limited progress in facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza. These actions come amid ongoing violence and international calls for increased humanitarian support for Gaza's civilians. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.
