Human settlement in England

From their leader's bungee-jumping stunts, their best general election result ever, and leading the fight for social care, the Lib Dems have had a good year. But in the political narrative, their place as the ‘third party' outside the Labour-Tory duopoly has been threatened by Reform UK's ascendancy. Coupled with their perennial struggle to be a party that fights for a progressive vision of the future while representing some of the most affluent, small-C constituencies across the country, the future of the Lib Dems feels unclear. To pitch their versions of the future of the party, on this episode of It's Bloody Complicated, Lena will be joined by two progressive champions in the party, Roz Savage MP and Cllr Carl Cashman.Dr Roz Savage was elected to be an MP for South Cotswolds in the 2024 General Election. Before that, she earned a law degree at Oxford and was a management consultant for eleven years, before an environmental awakening led to her setting out on a life of adventure. She holds four Guinness World Records for ocean rowing, including first woman to row solo across three oceans: the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian, using her adventures to raise awareness of environmental issues. She is also the founder of the Sisters, a global network bringing women together to create a more resilient future. Since being elected, she has been a progressive leader in parliament, fronting the fight for the Climate and Nature Bill.Carl Cashman is the Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Liverpool City Council, as well as the Councillor for Church ward since 2023. This victory, with over 50% of the vote, was the first Lib Dem gain in a Wavertree seat for over 13 years. He was previously elected as a Councillor on Knowsley Council in 2016 and also worked as a mortgage broker in this time. He is an outspoken proponent of liberalism, advocating for both his party and his beliefs throughout the media.Don't miss out on this urgent conversation with our two guestsSupport the showEnjoyed the podcast and want to be a live audience member at our next episode? For most urbanites, catching the bus is a fairly routine aspect of life. In most cases, buses take us to and from our appointments, errands and places of employment with a regularity that is almost mundane but—for an unlucky few living and dying in Liverpool, England—there's a sinister side to this specific form of mass transit that can be, quite literally, reality shattering. Story One – The Wavertree Bus Incident From ghostly sightings, weird time slips and bizarre reality glitches, Liverpool it seems, has something of an obscure history of strange occurrences. But an incident in 1961, which saw multiple witnesses incapacitated by strange figures, would add the possibility of inter-dimensional gateways to the city's ever-growing list of unusual happenings. Join us as we explore the Wavertree bus incident. Story Two – The Sandown Clown During the mid-1970's, two small children would find themselves confronted by a mysterious figure, whilst holidaying on the Isle of Wight. From their description of this bizarre entity, it still remains unclear whether the encounter was paranormal or extraterrestrial in nature. Join us as we explore the haunting story of the Sandown Clown. The 1961 Wavertree bus incident is one of Liverpool's most peculiar and mysterious urban legends. The event occurred in October 1961 on the number 79 bus route, which was a well-traveled route running through the Wavertree area of Liverpool. This strange encounter involved multiple passengers and has since become a part of the city's folklore.Support the pod:www.patreon.com/monsterfuzzCheck out our merch:https://monster-fuzz.creator-spring.comEverything else!www.linktr.ee/monsterfuzz

Tony Bellew is a name known to many who follow the world of boxing. He grew up in Wavertree in Liverpool, and by the age of just eighteen, was strapping on a bulletproof vest and working as a bouncer. His childhood had almost as many knocks as he took in the ring, with the end of his parents relationship and finding himself expelled from school at the age of fifteen. As he had heard said to him many times, he felt a waste of space and his life was at a crossroads. One direction could lead to a life of street fights and crime, the other was boxing. He chose the latter, and went on to become a world champion, but also held the British Commonwealth and European titles, and his glittering career culminated in two defining victories against David Heye. Tony Bellew's story of a chubby kid growing up in Liverpool to a world champion, is an example of willpower, incredible resilience and total dedication. After over 20 years in the ring, what you're about to hear is the tale of a man who has overcome the doubters and reached the pinnacle of his sport. Yet he is still vulnerable and honest enough to admit, he continues to face an almost daily battle with his demons. He's also just written a brilliant new book called Everybody Has A Plan Until They Get Punched In The Face, where he draws on the lessons he's learned from life in the ring to help others deal with the punches that life can throw all of us. If you have been through life events similar to those described in this episode and you need someone to talk to, please contact The Samaritans, on 116 123 And if you'd like to share your thoughts with Simon, he'd love to hear from you: Twitter @SimonThomasSky

Today’s guest is one of dentistry’s polarising figures. As a youngster, Liverpool lad Robbie Hughes made his living knocking teeth out in the ring. These days - although still a relative newcomer - he is one of cosmetic dentistry’s most-recognised faces. His Dental Excellence and Millionaire Smiles brands represent a paradigm shift in high-end dentistry. Love him or hate him, Robbie isn’t going anywhere just yet. In one of our most open and engaging podcasts so far, Robbie takes us from Wavertree beginnings to ambitious plans for the future, giving us an insight into the tenacious mindset that is helping him bridge the two in style. Enjoy! About Dr Robbie Hughes Former kickboxing world champion Dr Robbie Hughes graduated with honours from the University of Liverpool in 2008, taking with him an array of prestigious awards for academic and clinical performance. He went on to pursue a special interest in cosmetic dentistry which is realised in his successful Dental Excellence and Millionaire Smiles brands. He has undertaken training with some of dentistry’s leading lights and gained postgraduate certificates and diplomas in smile makeovers, full mouth reconstructions, orthodontics and composite bonding techniques. “Yeah, I think the word obsession is the right word....I always have this vision in my mind, and these visions don't go away. It's the person that I am, I always have a new vision, a new goal. And I try to break down that big picture into small stepping stones and I become obsessed with that stepping stone until I meet it and then I want to go to the next one.” Robbie Hughes Show Contents 01.47 - Kickboxing and growing up in Wavertree 06.57 - Academia 11.23 - On dentistry and entrepreneurship 19.18 - The Dental Excellence concept 15.52 - Nitpicking and scaling practice 30.21 - Backtracking - Dental Excellence’s early days 37.16 - What’s driving Robbie Hughes? 39.34 - Robbie’s dental team 46.26 - Finding what you love 49.00 - Working with The Reds 54.34 - Dealing with stick 59.28 - Robbie’s marketing budget 01.03.38 - If the face fits 01.05.36 - Mistakes and mis-starts 01.10.15 - Work-life balance 01.15.13 - Robbie’s biggest clinical error 01.17.34 - Wise words Connect With Robbie Hughes Instagram Website Connect with Prav and Payman: Website Prav on Instagram Payman on Instagram

Luciana Berger, MP for Wavertree and former Shadow Minister for Mental Health, joined Mick Coyle for the first Mental Health Monday. Berger says 2017 should be the year where we all open up about our problems.
An interview with Liverpool author George Skelly whose latest book is another spell-binding account of an appalling miscarriage of justice. Charged with the "Cranborne Road murder" of Wavertree widow Alice Rimmer, two Manchester youths were hastily condemned by a Liverpool jury on the police-orchestrated lies of a criminal and two malleable young prostitutes. George Skelly's detailed account of the warped trial, predictable appeal result courtesy of 'hanging judge' Lord Goddard and the whitewash secret inquiry will enrage all who believe in justice. And if the men's prison letters (including from the condemned cells) sometimes make you laugh, they will make you weep far longer. Following his masterful expose of injustice in the Cameo Cinema murder case in 1950s Liverpool contained in his book The Cameo Conspiracy, George Skelly now reveals a second police conspiracy - two years later in the same city involving the same senior detective - which this time led to the execution of two young men. Until justice is finally done, Teddy Devlin and Alfie Burns still lie together beneath the staff car park at Walton Prison, their only trace a tiny plaque numbered 55.
