With his hilariously sharp-witted, no-nonsense approach and radiating descriptions of nature's landscapes, Derek Gow is a force to contend with. He's been one of the most vocal actors in the reintroduction of missing keystone species in England such as the beaver, the water vole and the white stork, butting heads with obnoxious lobbyists and government officials. He is currently rewilding his 300-acre farm on the Devon/Cornwall border where the Eurasian lynx, wild boar and harvest mice make home. Our conversation ranges from the obstacles that prevent society in re-introducing critical species, all the way to Elizabethan fat bishops and voles that Gorgonzola river banks for other species to thrive. What is the mindset that sees all of land as "mine"? When were wolves seen as Gods, and what would it have been like to be a medieval traveller coming across one of these creatures “sodden like a Michelin man on a country path”? What barbarities have we committed against other species, and why should you think twice when buying herds of prehistoric Heck cattle?Yep, this is a fun and brilliant one. With Derek Gow & Kris Tompkins. The rewilding movement is currently sweeping across the world's landscapes, restoring ecologies and species, re-naturalising rivers and forests. Our two guests are trailblazers in this space – first we hear from Kristine Tompkins, ex-CEO of Patagonia who, together with her late husband Doug Tompkins, have protected over 14 million acres of wildlands and national parks across Latin America, along with over 30 million acres of marine areas. Kristine is Chair of the National Geographic Society's Last Wild Places campaign and was the first conservationist to be awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. Then we speak with Derek Gow, who is infamous amongst insider rewilding circles for his leadership in the re-introduction of the beaver back into European landscapes. Through Derek, and his delightfully funny and informative book 'Bringing back the Beaver', I've become somewhat obsessed with beavers. This episode covers the basics of rewilding and goes into different models of restoring ecosystems into their rightful states, all the while discussing the mental impediments and frustrations that can occur in the attempt to rewild the most stubborn species of all — the human being. In Bedlam in the New World: A Mexican Madhouse in the Age of Enlightenment (UNC Press, 2022), Cristina Ramos tells us the story of Mexico city's oldest public institution for the insane, the Hospital de San Hipólito. This institution, founded in 1567, was the first mental hospital in the New World. Remarkable as this fact may be, this book is not simply about the singularity of this institution––though by placing this institution au pair with similar ones in the European context Ramos reframes traditional narratives in the history of psychiatry. What makes this book truly remarkable is that Ramos presents San Hipólito as both a microcosm and a colonial laboratory of the Hispanic Enlightenment. According to Ramos, during the late eighteenth-century madness became understood in increasingly medical terms, and San Hipólito served as a site of care, confinement, and knowledge production. Heeding the call of scholars who ask that histories of medicine take a more complex view of religion, Ramos traces the medicalization of madness that took place under the Hispanic Enlightenment and shows that the main agents of medicalization were not philosophers or physicians, but the clergy and more surprisingly still, inquisitors. Transcending the walls of the hospital, Ramos takes us to other colonial institutions such as the Holy Office and the criminal secular courts and shows us the stories of the individuals who were taken to San Hipólito. Inquisitors were fundamental actors in this story because, in their purpose of establishing veracity, they were at the forefront of devising new models for undertaking the complexities of human reasoning and the nuances of intent. Bedlam in the New World is a book beautifully written and poignantly argued and will captive listeners who are interested in histories of medicine, madness, colonialism, and religion! Try as we might, our hearts were not into recording a podcast as much as usual, but just like the Psychic Circus, the show must go on! And just like how Hartnell and company filmed The Daleks Episode 2 mere moments after JFK's assassination, we recorded this on a dark day in American history. To cheer ourselves up, we do a classic commentary on one of our favorite stories, “The Greatest Show in the Galaxy”. This is probably the drunkest and the darkest episode of the podcast thus far. Take care, everyone.

Welcome to the show you beautiful people. This episode starts with a brand new segment called Jack-Ask (which is a terrible name and needs to be changed).  For some reason a listener thinks your host, Jack, is the person to ask for advice on a Christmas dilemma.  What do you do when a guest brings very little food to the table, but takes loads of leftovers when they leave? Then it's the triumphant return of Robin Sings (which should really be called Robin and Juno Sing).  We had a request from Bob Baker for the girls to sing Where Are You Christmas, so that's what they did.We also had a request from Bob Baker to take a look at the British TV show Old Jack's Boat which has a lovely Christmas episode.  It's called The Christmas Quest and it's a real tearjerker.  I couldn't find the episode to watch, but you can listen to the story here:https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/radio/old-jacks-boat-christmas-questThis episode we have another Yule Log.  This one features Lil Bub an internet famous cat who's very cute and sits in front of a fire.If you want to watch it, who am I to stop you.  Here's a link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuHZSbPJhaYThen we have everyone's favourite segment What The Dickens.  This episode we talk about why the chapters of a Christmas Carol are called staves, why Scrooge wants to retire to Bedlam and why every idiot who goes around with Merry Christmas on his lips should be buried with a stake of holly through his heart. This week's recommendation is anything by the author Bill Bryson.  His books are funny and interesting and they kept me company on my short tour around Wales. If you want to get in touch, the email is totalchristmas@gmail.comMerry Christmas

I believe that gathering at the table over a simple meal is one of the best ways to love people and invite them to a closer relationship with God. Welcome to The JOY Series on the Dear Daughters Podcast! Right now we're talking about how to find joy at the table and I've invited some of my table experts to the show.   Jen Schmidt lives in North Carolina with her husband, Gregg, and is a mom of five children and two daughters-in-law. Jen shares her heart for Jesus and hospitality on her blog, Balancing Beauty & Bedlam, and “accidental author” of her book, Just Open the Door. And, she now owns the Becoming Cottage to host ministry events (a lifelong big God dream of hers). Jen loves opening her door to people, engaging in deep conversation filled with truth and grace, and blessing everyone who sits at her table … or stands around her kitchen island. I hope this conversation we have is a blessing and an encouragement to you. We can learn our own kind of table ministry from Jesus. Jesus was always inviting, always including, always wooing, and he centered so much of his ministry around the table, feeding people, meeting people, loving people. But we overthink this. So, on this episode we dive a little deeper into what it looks like practically for us to ”evangelize at the table” … to be a blessing to others and simply live out what is so important in our lives, wherever we are in our lives, with intention. I hope that you will be brave and not overthink it and make the invitation. You have exactly what you need. I pray that you can be a blessing and a light to others.
