Nick the Rat Radio Episode 540 Nick the Rat is sick, pantsless, and on a mission. Episode 540 kicks off with a rant about Google Maps burying street names under business ads, a meditation on robot Frank and his box-flipping career, and some hard questions for John Stewart about who actually gets paid. Then things get deep — literally. Nick dives into the surge of mass whale strandings since 2023, the string of mysterious Baltic Sea cable cuts, NATO's Operation Baltic Sentry, and DARPA's real-life living sensor program that uses ocean animals as military surveillance tools. The dots start connecting in ways that will keep you up at night. Also on tonight's program: the 60-meter unidentified object sitting on the Baltic seafloor that kills electronics and breathes water, a Canadian-Norwegian oil company that found Poland's biggest oil deposit ever on their very first drill, a CIA whistleblower testifying about the COVID lab leak cover-up, and Jane Hanoi returns with a special report that is absolutely not safe for the lactose intolerant. Featuring music from Zillion Instruments, Nav Day, Free Beat Vault, Froggy 5, 44 with Dudley Boys, and more. Value for value — if you got something out of it, send something back. A paranoid rat discusses conspiracies, secret agendas, and things they don't want you to know — while playing hand-picked underground music. What happened in Tudor England when someone's mind turned against them? There was no therapist, no diagnosis, no prescription. But there was a whole system, and it was more coherent than you'd expect. We dig into the four humors as a complete theory of the mind, Timothy Bright's 1586 Treatise of Melancholie (the first English book on mental illness), music as formally prescribed medical treatment, and the social structures that made room for people who thought differently. We also look at Will Somers, Henry VIII's jester, what Bedlam actually was in the Tudor period, and why the Henry VIII personality change story is more complicated than it first appears. The Tudors were trying to make sense of suffering with the tools they had. Some of those tools were wrong. The impulse behind them is completely recognizable. Mental institutions have a way of leaving their mark—whether it's through the haunting tales of abandoned asylums, the horrifying experiences shared by patients and staff, or the disturbing reality of 19th-century facilities that turned human suffering into a spectacle.Look for this podcast on YouTube Music, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, and other apps. Get the full list of options here: https://pod.link/1078714736*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*IN THIS EPISODE: Mental Institutions, psychiatric hospitals, lunatic asylums… whatever you want to call them, they can do good work if given the right resources and staff, helping patients to live through or possibly even overcome mental health crises. But even in the more well-funded locations, nightmares still occur according to both staff and patients. And even when those institutions are abandoned and left to rot, many refuse to release the tormented souls who have somehow found themselves entrapped there in the afterlife. We'll look at haunted asylums, we'll hear some horrifying true stories from both patients and workers about what happens inside asylums that are still in operation, and we'll learn about the horrifying reality of mental asylums in the 19th century acting almost like amusement parks for paying visitors. CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = The Foreboding00:01:52.693 = Show Open00:03:39.632 = Madness in the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum00:15:40.319 = The Buffalo State Asylum ***00:22:43.987 = Athens Asylum00:33:25.105 = Haunted Asylums00:42:36.694 = Psych Ward Horror Stories ***01:11:40.472 = Seeing The Sights at the Psych Ward ***01:20:32.348 = Show Close*** = Begins immediately after inserted ad breakHELPFUL LINKS & RESOURCES…https://WeirdDarkness.com/ALBUMS = Songs and Videos by our Weird Darkness punk band, #DarkWeirdnesshttps://WeirdDarkness.com/STORE = Tees, Mugs, Socks, Hoodies, Totes, Hats, Kidswear & Morehttps://WeirdDarkness.com/HOPE = Hope For Depression or Thoughts of Self-Harmhttps://WeirdDarkness.com/NEWSLETTER = In-Depth Articles, Memes, Weird DarkNEWS, Videos & Morehttps://WeirdDarkness.com/AUDIOBOOKS = FREE Audiobooks Narrated By Darren Marlar EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/AsylumGhostsSOURCES and RESOURCES:“Madness In The Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum” by Katie Serena for All That's Interesting:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/3k8t8far and Kathy Weiser-Alexander for Legends of America:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/mryb2uv3“Athens Asylum for the Insane” by Kathy Weiser-Alexander for Legends of America: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/mvx5kr9z“The Buffalo State Asylum” posted at The Scare Chamber: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2a5jacp3“Haunted Asylums” by Christopher Myers for Ranker: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/bdt42kwa“Psych Ward Horror Stories” by Duke Harton: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2a4avdvz and Isadora Teich: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/57t2z279 for Ranker“Seeing the Sights at the Psych Ward” by Christy Box for Ranker: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/mr3bn87b(Over time links may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. This week, we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. We once again discuss how a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. Dive in with us as we discuss and listen to some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week, we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members, along with Offshoots, which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. We hope that we turn you on to something new. Songs this week include: Alcatrazz – “Painted Lover” from Disturbing The Peace (1985) Subrosa – “World's Greatest Lover” from Never Bet The Devil Your Head (1997) Black Swan – “The Fire And The Flame” from Paralyzed (2026) THE LAST ROCKSTARS – “THE LAST ROCKSTARS (Paris Mix)” from THE LAST ROCKSTARS (2022) Circus Diablo - “Mad Parade” from Circus Diablo (2007) DREAMCAR – “We Rats” from Dream EP (2024) Swedish Metal Aid – “Give A Helpin' Hand” from Give A Helpin' Hand - single (1985) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! 400 years ago, a brazenly braggadocious begging ‘bedlamite' possibly penned a poem so incantatorily-poignant, so wonder-woundedly-written, so symmetrically and cognitively bruising, that it demands to be memorized and chanted aloud. Let's dive into the song of Tom O'Bedlam. ⇓ ⇓ ⇓Tom O'Bedlam's SongI. From the hag and hungry goblinThat into rags would rend ye,The spirit that stands by the naked manIn the Book of Moons defend ye,That of your five sound sensesYou never be forsaken,Nor wander from your selves with Tom Abroad to beg your bacon,While I do sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing;Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.II.Of thirty bare years have ITwice twenty been enragèd,And of forty been three times fifteenIn durance soundly cagèdOn the lordly lofts of Bedlam,With stubble soft and dainty,Brave bracelets strong, sweet whips ding-dong,With wholesome hunger plenty,And now I sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing;Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.III.With a thought I took for MaudlinAnd a cruse of cockle pottage,With a thing thus tall, sky bless you all,I befell into this dotage.I slept not since the Conquest,Till then I never wakèd,Till the roguish boy of love where I layMe found and stript me nakèd.And now I sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing;Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.IV.When I short have shorn my sow's faceAnd swigged my horny barrel,In an oaken inn I pound my skinAs a suit of gilt apparel; The moon's my constant mistress,And the lowly owl my marrow; The flaming drake and the night crow makeMe music to my sorrow. While I do sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing; Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.V.The palsy plagues my pulsesWhen I prig your pigs or pullen,Your culvers take, or matchless makeYour Chanticleer or Sullen. When I want provant with HumphreyI sup, and when benighted,I repose in Paul's with waking soulsYet never am affrighted. But I do sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing;Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.VI. I know more than Apollo,For oft, when he lies sleepingI see the stars at bloody warsIn the wounded welkin weeping; The moon embrace her shepherd,And the Queen of Love her warrior,While the first doth horn the star of morn,And the next the heavenly Farrier. While I do sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing;Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.VII. The gypsies, Snap and Pedro,Are none of Tom's comradoes,The punk I scorn and the cutpurse sworn,And the roaring boy's bravadoes. The meek, the white, the gentleMe handle, touch, and spare not;But those that cross Tom RynosserosDo what the panther dare not.Although I sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing; Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.VIII.With a host of furious fanciesWhereof I am commander,With a burning spear and a horse of air,To the wilderness I wander.By a knight of ghosts and shadowsI summoned am to tourneyTen leagues beyond the wide world's end:Methinks it is no journey.Yet will I sing, Any food, any feeding,Feeding, drink, or clothing;Come dame or maid, be not afraid,Poor Tom will injure nothing.---------------------------------------Original Harold Bloom interview: https://youtu.be/EVWiwd0P0c0?si=WkhOdDTNrPwp14WS✦

Today's episode of PoGo City Radio is a full-blown, no-skips takeover—32 tracks deep and powered entirely by Dilapidated Records' 17th installment of Punx To The Bone. No algorithms, no soft edges, just raw DIY punk blasting wall-to-wall. We tore through cuts from Alpha Sub, Carrousel, PissAnt, Angry Youth, Pig Stick, !Radical Fun Time!, Escape From The Zoo, Spiky Tops, The Rip Taylors, The Defamed, Spike Polite & Sewage, and slammed the door shut proper with The Parasitix. If it was loud, pissed, and meant something, it made the cut. We also recapped the chaos and community of Sherman's PUNK Flea Market, because punk isn't just records—it's people, tables, crates, flyers, and PoGoing. On the live front, we ran down Spiky Tops' February run: Feb 6 – Philly w/ WKSJ?, Erections & Shit Faced Feb 7 – Brooklyn, NY at Luck 13 Salon Feb 13–15 – West Palm Beach for We Are The Punx Following Saturday – Lehigh Valley at the Fire House Dance Hall w/ Suburban Downgrade More dates coming—stay sharp. And yeah, it wouldn't be PoGo City Radio without a little fire. Bedlam goes off on ICE, Trump, and the government as a whole, because the system wants us tired, divided, and fighting each other. That's the trick. Don't fall for it. Punch up, not sideways. The real enemy isn't your neighbor—it's THE SYSTEM. Same frequency. Same attitude. PoGo City Radio—punk lives here.

Villa Park erupted. What looked like a hard-earned point turned into a afternoon of strangers hugging, tears in the Holte, and a goalmouth scramble that bent time. In the chaos of stoppage time, Emi Buendia stepped through the noise and curled in a winner that crushed Arsenal and brought Villa within three points of their visitors and... gave them the title of Linear Unofficial World Club Champions for the forty seventh time. The show pulls apart the tactical swings, the substitutions that made no sense until they suddenly did, Arsenal's strange lack of urgency, the late shift in momentum, and the way Emery's bench forced the decisive moment. From Matty Cash's hammer strike toBoubacar Kamara's ground-level heroics to the eruption that followed, this episode captures a statement performance from a team that is starting to believe in itself.Villa are grinding, adapting, evolving, and winning games they used to let slip. And the rest of the league has no choice but to take them seriously.UTVGET AD-FREE SHOWS and JOIN MATCH CLUBGet ad-free shows and extra shows, and join My Old Man Said's 24/7 Villa community, Match Club. For more details and to become a member, click here: Become a MOMS MemberJoin the show's listener facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid Chris Budd - @BUDD_musicPhillip Shaw - @prsgameMy Old Man Said - https://www.myoldmansaid.comThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. This week's My Old Man Said podcast opens with the Lovers Walk Unlimited Orchestra summing up the Villa week in song, before the show dives straight into the fallout from a chaotic few days. From David's Dublin airport delay courtesy of Zelensky, to a Brighton game that veered from disaster to delirium, it has been peak Villa in every imaginable way.The show pulls apart the Brighton match first. Emery's rage in the dugout. A tactical plan that looked too respectful. A comeback powered by firepower off the bench. Questions about the squad answered by Onana bullying back posts, Watkins waking up again and Marlon emerging as a genuine asset. Emery's long-range revolution gets dissected too. The pundits are baffled, the xG merchants are twitching, but Villa are simply doing what good teams do. Take the right shot when it is on.From there the episode moves into the Arsenal preview. A match that could tilt the entire narrative of the season. Beat Arsenal and suddenly the door creaks open to something bigger. As MOMS say, the T-word is banned until further notice, but the implications are impossible to ignore. There is also Villa News: Barkley's injury setback, Martinez disappearing again in the warm-up, Young Boys away-end arrests, merch-line overload and the progress of the North Stand redevelopment. Emery's Clipboard returns with a forensic look at Martinez's numbers, Bizot's impact, and how fine margins in goalkeeping shape the entire season. The Villa Engine gets a nod with the under-18s hammering Fulham. Then there is the bigger picture. The Football Supporters' Association “Stop Exploiting Loyalty” campaign gains parliamentary backing. BBC research highlights the rise of abusive posts aimed at managers. And Juan Sebastián Verón gets banned for refusing a guard of honour in Argentina. It is a sprawling, funny, chaotic and insight-packed episode that captures Villa's strange reality this season. Emery's side are grinding, exploding, wobbling and rising again, often in the space of a single match. And as the show suggests, if Villa beat Arsenal, things might get very interesting indeed.A proper bumper edition. Listen. Strap in. And avoid airports whenever world leaders land.UTVGET AD-FREE SHOWS and JOIN MATCH CLUBGet ad-free shows and extra shows, and join My Old Man Said's 24/7 Villa community, Match Club. Donald Trump's ever-changing narrative about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein has grown increasingly incoherent, with his latest claim being that Epstein “stole” spa workers from Mar-a-Lago—including, allegedly, Virginia Giuffre. Instead of expressing outrage over Epstein's crimes or sympathy for the survivors, Trump framed the fallout like a staffing dispute, saying Epstein took people who worked for him and that Giuffre “had no complaints.” The shifting timelines—from calling Epstein a “terrific guy” to suddenly claiming moral indignation or workplace betrayal—don't inspire confidence in his account.Giuffre's family responded critically to Trump's comments, describing them as insensitive and reducing Virginia to an object rather than acknowledging her as a survivor. They emphasized that she was a person who endured serious trauma and should not be spoken about in such transactional terms. Their reaction raised broader concerns about the tone and framing of Trump's statements—particularly the absence of empathy toward those harmed by Epstein. By focusing on staffing disputes and loyalty rather than addressing the abuse itself, Trump's remarks were seen as overlooking the core human cost of the scandal.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Dan Snow's History Hit

Quacks, wise women, barber surgeons and private madhouses - just some of the options available if you were to find yourself in ill health in the 16th and 17th centuries. Dan is joined by historian Dr Alanna Skuse to look at healthcare in Renaissance England, from healing the humours and blood letting to cross animal blood transfusions, skin grafts that involved attaching the face to the upper arm and the notorious treatments of patients at Bedlam, Britain's most famous psychiatric hospital. But not all treatments were bizarre or gruesome; in fact, early practitioners had some pretty progressive ideas around holistic health, the benefits of nature, sleep and friendship.Alanna shares astonishing stories of treatments, patients and practitioners from her new book 'The Surgeon, the Midwife and the Quack: How to Stay Alive in Renaissance England'Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal PatmoreWe'd love to hear your feedback - you can take part in our podcast survey here: https://insights.historyhit.com/history-hit-podcast-always-on.You can also email the podcast directly at ds.hh@historyhit.com.
