Hello to you listening in Saratoga Springs, New York!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.  Over 100 years ago Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis wrote, 'We can have a democratic society or we can have the concentration of great wealth in the hands of the few. We cannot have both.” [Louis Brandeis, Supreme Court Justice from 1916-1939]Here we are again. What to do? We organize and work together. If there's no one to start it, you start it. Find your Ordinary Persons, talk with them, listen, have compassion for each other's views, and join together. Step by step your little group of Ordinary Persons can become an Army of Ordinary Persons, maybe even a movement standing up to oppression, greed, injustice. It starts with someone looking around and saying, “I've had it! Enough is enough! This stops now!”The following poem The Low Road by Marge Piercy demonstrates what happens when we organize and work together:The Low Road, by Marge Piercy"What can they doto you? Whatever they want. They can set you up, they canbust you, they can breakyour fingers, they canburn your brain with electricity, blur you with drugs till youcan't walk, can't remember, they cantake your child, wall upyour lover. They can do anythingyou don't stop themfrom doing. How can you stopthem? Alone, you can fight, you can refuse, you cantake what revenge you canbut they roll over you. But two people fightingback-to-back can cut througha mob, a snake-dancing filecan break a cordon, an armycan meet an army. Two people can keep each othersane, can give support, conviction, love, massage, hope, sex.Three people are a delegation,a committee, a wedge. With fouryou can play bridge and startan organization. With sixyou can rent a whole house, eat pie for dinner with noseconds, and hold a fund raising party.A dozen make a demonstration.A hundred fill a hall.A thousand have solidarity and your own newsletter;ten thousand, power and your own paper;a hundred thousand, your own media;ten million, your own country. It goes on one at a time,it starts when you careto act, it starts when you doit again and they said no,it starts when you say Weand you know who you mean, and each day you mean one more."Click to access The Low Road, by Marge PiercySaturday June 14th is No King Day and Flag Day! GOP Lawmaker Proposes Making Trump's Birthday a Federal Holiday

Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney has introduced a bill to designate June 14, President Donald Trump's birthday, as a federal holiday by merging it with Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag in 1777. The legislation, officially titled the Trump's Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act, has no co-sponsors yet. Tenney argues that Trump deserves recognition alongside George Washington, calling him the most consequential president in modern history. The bill follows a pattern of symbolic pro-Trump proposals from Republican lawmakers, including efforts to place his likeness on Mount Rushmore, rename Dulles Airport after him, and even explore a path for him to run for a third term. While the bill is unlikely to pass, it highlights Trump's continued influence over the Republican Party, where lawmakers frequently push legislation aimed at solidifying their loyalty to him. Critics, however, question why Congress is focusing on Trump's birthday instead of addressing issues like inflation, healthcare, and national security. Learn more about your ad choices. It's on June 14th, already designated as Flag Day in the U.S. so Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, of New York,  introduced “Trump's Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act.”  It would “permanently codify” June 14th as a federal holiday called “Trump's Birthday and Flag Day.” Pulizer Prize winning author and investigative reporter David Cay Johnston will stop by to talk politics. We'll check in with Dr. Michael Daignault about escalating cases of the flu and measles. The Mark Thompson Show 2/18/25Patreon subscribers are the backbone of the show! Another brutally cold day in the Coulee Region. Looking up, though. Might see the mid-20's by Friday, and into the 40's on Sunday! Hello, car wash!!! Started the morning with an incredible story about a plane crash where no one died…even though the plane eventually ended upside-down! Plus, today's the primary in Wisconsin, so we reminded everyone to get out & vote! Also in WI, the latest on the Amber Alert for Sophia Franklin. Plus, they've already changed the name to the "Gulf of America", and if one lawmaker has their way, we'll be changing the name of "Flag Day" as well. On top of it being the WI primary, it's also "National Drink Wine" day…and we offered some suggestions on how to celebrate! In sports, we talked about the Badgers moving up again in the latest rankings and another game for Wisconsin tonight against Illinois. The Bucks are off until Thursday when they welcome the Clippers to Milwaukee. Tee Higgins is getting the franchise tag again from the Bengals, and we recapped yesterday's 4 Nations Face-Off action. Elsewhere in sports, the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin scandal is back in the news a decade later. We let you know what's on TV tonight and what's new for New Release Tuesday, and we also talked to Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports show! With Mardi Gras coming up in the next few weeks, we shared an interesting story about biodegradable beads, which contain seeds, so once they break down, they can sprout plants! Plus, an AskReddit thread pertaining to words we can NEVER spell correctly. Mine is recommend. Always get it wrong the first time. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a shirtless #FloridaMan who stole a cop car, carjacked a woman while running from the police, some thieves who used a UHaul truck to smash-n-grab $10,000 worth of LEGO sets, a couple of dudes in Colorado who attempted to use a cannon to shoot over $200,000 in contraband into a prison, and a woman in Australia who got a DUI for being NINE times over the legal limit. And we're digging into the history of Pittsburgh's ties to the American flag ahead of Independence Day. We always cite our sources: Pittsburghers got scammed into buying tickets for a fake Biggie and 2Pac live orchestra concert and a fake hot air balloon festival. PIT officials are recommending that travelers get to the airport two and a half to three hours before their flights because the security lines have been extra long.  May was the busiest month the Pittsburgh airport has seen in 17 years – and nationwide, TSA recently broke their record for most travelers screened in a day.  Pittsburgh Public Schools is projected to deplete its fund balance by 2026, and is thinking about closing or consolidating some of its schools. The district is holding town halls throughout the summer to get community feedback. Upcoming town halls include: July 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Concord July 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. at West Liberty July 11 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Obama July 16 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Jeron X. Grayson Community Center July 23 from 6-7:30 at Morrow Intermediate PPS proposed closing six schools in 2021; almost 50% of the district's school buildings are less than half full. A man from Collier Township is the reason we have Flag Day and a monument at Flagstaff Hill. Shuman Juvenile Detention Center is expected to reopen soon – there's been a lot of controversy around both the decision to reopen the center and the group that was selected to run it. A deer got stuck in the Highland Park reservoir – but thankfully, it was rescued. Five years ago, almost to the exact day, Wes Moore came on a new upstart podcast and talked about what made him angry. Specifically, he talked about marijuana laws and how they disproportionately impacted communities of color. These laws ruined a lot of people's lives over the years. And they made a lot of people angry. But Wes stepped up. Since he was elected as The Governor of Maryland last year, he's put his money where his mouth was and he pushed it through. And now more than 175,000 Marylanders have had their criminal records expunged by his Executive Action. It's an amazing example of his commitment and follow through and why your host Paul Rieckhoff frequently refers to Maryland's Governor as potentially our future President. And in this throwback episode, you're going to hear exactly why. Your host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) rips into all of it in this all new episode of Independent Americans. From Putin visiting North Korea, to Juneteenth, to RFK failing to qualify for the debates, there's a lot happening. School might be out for the summer, but the news is just heating up. Because on Independent Americans, we're focused on not just what's happening now, but also on what's happening next. Friendly confines: How constantly close games are defining, testing Cardinals

Best Podcast in Baseball

It's Flag Day? Have you checked the standings yet? Following closely behind the Cardinals' 3-0 victory against the Cubs at Wrigley Field and each team's 49th game this season decided by three or fewer runs, a question was presented to KMOX/1120 AM's Kevin Wheeler. What are the traits necessary for a team to do well in so many slim-margin games? As a guest on a brand-new edition of the Best Podcast in Baseball with Derrick Goold, Wheeler outlines two necessities for every team to thrive in close games and how doing one will help the other survive. It is vital Wheeler illustrates for a team to get more innings from the rotation so that it's asking less of the bullpen in close games, and that will help keep the bullpen fresh to turn those close games into victories. This is how teams can get friendly with the confines of close games. During a 4-3 home stand and again as they opened a Father's Day weekend series at Wrigley, the Cardinals showcased some of the developing depth in the bullpen that is helping them hold leads and secure slim victory. Ryan Fernandez has emerged with holds in consecutive games; Matthew Liberatore's return to the bullpen gives the Cardinals a third setup lefty and one with strikeout stuff at his best; and Chris Roycroft, only a few years removed from independent ball, has intrigued the Cardinals with his power stuff and movement. Or, as one teammate put it, "filth." The Cardinals returned to .500 with the victory and should they spillover for the first time in more than a year, they'll be one of the few teams in the National League with a winning record. Wheeler and Goold discuss if that's fallout from the consolidation of spending and power at only a few NL spots, such as Dodger Stadium and South Philadelphia. If those teams are collecting the highest-dollar stars in the NL what does that mean for the remainder of the standings and how do teams keep up as that spending gap grows into a standings gap. Wheeler suggests that a lot can be learned from NL Central-leader Milwaukee and how the Brewers have kept ahead without spending too much. It's an example of how the division, bunched-up and sometimes confusing mediocrity for parity, will be decided. What team gets its stars to shine the brightest the soonest? That list would include Cubs Dansby Swanson just as it could be asked of the Cardinals' cornerstones Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Willson Contreras, who is on the injured list with a fractured arm. That list would also include Cardinals starter Sonny Gray, whose bounce-back start helped Cardinals to a winning home stand. And all of that brings the conversation back around to one way for a team to thrive in so many close games. Play fewer of them. Score more runs to avoid them. Also discussed in this episode of BPIB is the Cardinals' visit to Rickwood Field later this month for the first National League regular-season game at the nation's oldest ballpark. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and baseball writer Derrick Goold.

Though he and MAGA have co-opted some of these flags, and turned them into weapons of violence, they belong to us. The American Flag is a unifying symbol that stands opposite the MAGA flag. He also said it was a terrible take to say he was using the Lakers as leverage. More than half the job for a college coach now is managing the portal. Boomer wonders if the Jets lose this year, would Bill Belichick go to the Jets? Boomer thinks it would be the ultimate revenge move, but Gio thinks he hates the Jets too much to do that. Boomer wonders what places are realistic for Belichick in 2025. The Giants or Cowboys are the likely landing spots. Boomer said he heard the Jets requested to open on the road instead of at home because of ‘home pressure'. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Shannon Sharpe and Ochocinco talking about Aaron Rodgers missing minicamp. Sauce Gardner doesn't think it's a big deal. Tom Brady talked about not wanting to be too critical of players while broadcasting. JD Martinez hit a walk off HR and he said the clubhouse mood has been good. In the final segment of the hour, the Utah NHL team is going to be The Utah Hockey Club for their first year.  Hour 4 Trevor Lawrence got a huge extension that will pay him $55 million a season which seems crazy for what he's done so far. Boomer said there really is no alternative. In NY, we have Aaron Rodgers, the oldest QB in the NFL coming off an achilles injury. Gio wonders why we are assuming he's going to play well this year. Jerry returns for an update but first Gio tells us he had to save a bird's life while walking his dog, Elvis. Gio also wonders why we don't worry more about mosquitos taking our blood. Jerry starts with JD Martinez hitting his first career walk off HR as the Mets beat the Marlins. Caitlin Clark was asked about all the attention on her day in and day out. The Moment of The Day involves Mike Francesa talking about Caitlin Clark: ‘sorry if you don't, she does'. In the final segment of the week, someone at the station was boxed in for over 2 hours by a double parked van.
