As we record this episode at the start of January, wherever you are in the world your news is likely to be filled with images of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, or temperatures well below freezing alongside flooding across much of the UK. And whilst climate and it's impact on weather might be making the headlines, we know that nature and the biodiversity crises are inexorably linked to this challenge. So in todays episode we explore just how linked climate and nature are – and potentially could be in UK legislation. Ahead of the Climate and Nature Bill heading to Westminster we're joined by Dr Roz Savage MBE, the MP who is bringing the bill forward. Our Co-host is the former Chair of the UK Governments Climate Change Committee and the longest serving Secretary of State for the Environment for the British Government, The Right Honorable The Lord Deben. Thanks to Atkins Realis for supporting Planet Possible. In this episode of 'Wicked Problems,' host Richard Delevan discusses the interconnections between climate change, geopolitical instability, and political turmoil, coined as the 'doom loop.' The episode explores how rising inflation and extreme weather events influence political movements and undermine climate actions. Delavan speaks with Roz Savage, a new MP for the South Cotswolds, about her climate and nature bill, highlighting the need for comprehensive legislation and public engagement. Later, Dr. Maria Antonia Tigre from the Sabin Center and Dana Drugman of One Earth Now discuss the implications of the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on state obligations to mitigate climate change, emphasizing the role of legal frameworks in shaping global climate action. And a subscription at Wickedproblems.earth makes a great holiday gift! 00:00 Introduction and Opening Remarks01:03 Climate Change and Economic Instability02:52 Political Implications of Climate Disruption04:20 Rising Costs and Food Prices05:51 Flooding and Insurance Issues10:35 International Climate Litigation12:18 Interview with Roz Savage26:02 Ambitious Private Member's Bill on Climate and Nature26:41 Long-Term Commitment to Climate Advocacy27:39 Introduction to Legal Experts on Climate Obligations28:39 Historic Moment in International Climate Law34:44 The Role of Non-State Actors in Climate Litigation38:16 Implications of ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change45:18 Challenges and Opportunities in Climate Litigation54:57 Final Thoughts and Reflections Hosted on Acast. Roz could have stopped at rowing solo across oceans to world records, awards, and national honors. She didn't. She had done those things for a purpose: helping make our world more livable, less polluted. They gave her greater skills to appreciate her purpose and implement it better. As with most people, the challenges looked insurmountable to her. But unlike most people, she had once made a list to row across an ocean and, finding no impossible steps, she did it. Over and over. It's easy to look at her today and figure, "of course she could do it. She's an ocean rower. She was born that way," or something like that. But before she did it, she was a disgruntled employee and spouse looking for meaning and a way to improve her world, not a record-holding athletic champion. So also unlike most people, she looked at what sustainability would take, saw no impossible steps, and knew she could help achieve it. That's my read.I would have been happy to host her for the athletic achievements alone, but they were all stepping stones for greater service to humanity. She describes her latest book, The Ocean in a Drop and her life experience and goals.Roz's web page, which links to her other books, videos, and more. You'll love it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We explore politics and economics and theories of change that bring us to the cutting edge of what is possible. Twenty years ago, Roz Savage was a management consultant living in London with her husband. From the outside, it looked like a good life, but Roz was miserable. Until she blew up that life and found a new one on the other side of the ocean. She'd just have to row for three and half months to get there. I was delighted to be interviewed by Zoe for her new podcast HeadRightOut. Here is our conversation which we recorded on the 8th September 2021 (2 days before my 40th Birthday)! I hope you enjoy! Words by Zoe: “A powerful conversation with Tough Girl Challenges founder and Tough Girl Podcast host, Sarah Williams. As friends, we easily cover multiple topics across our conversations. These include how to meet fear head-on and deal with it; why Sarah is inspired by two specific female role models/mentors and the moments in her life that nearly broke her. Interestingly, she elaborates on how those darkest times taught her the most and benefitted her in ways she could never have imagined. There are references to many long-distance trails, in the UK and overseas, with the Appalachian Trail being lauded by Sarah as the most life-changing for her, personally. A female adventure epic.” More info about the HeadRightOut Podcast: In the HeadRightOut Podcast, Zoe Langley-Wathen talks to midlife women about stretching comfort zones and facing fears. They will highlight each guest's HeadRightOut Moments and challenging the norm, mostly in the outdoors. Feeling fearful about trying something adventurous? Listen in to a hub of vibrant, honest and motivational audio content, designed to encourage women to head out of their comfort zone within the outdoors. Featuring both the everyday and longer, planned challenges, Zoe invites stories from resilient women about facing their own HeadRightOut Moments, despite potential personal barriers. With the aim to inspire and empower midlife women to question and remedy their own levels of resilience, Zoe knows first-hand the power of facing fears after beginning long-distance hiking, solo at the age of forty. With life-long benefits to physical and mental health, particularly in supporting a positive peri-and post-menopause experience, she believes all women should be encouraged to try new things. Though aimed at midlife women, all ages and genders can benefit from the impact of the messages offered. Enjoy! The DO Lectures is an ideas sharing event run out of an old cowshed in Cardigan Bay, Wales. In this series of DO podcasts, Gav Thompson chats to people about how they have achieved their amazing levels of success, as well as uncovering some of the despites that they have had to overcome to get there. In Episode 12 of Being Amazing Despite... Gav chats to Roz Savage. Roz is the only woman to have ever rowed single-handedly "around the world". On her own she has rowed 15,000 miles across the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, earning herself 4 Guinness World Records in the process. She is now an accomplished speaker, writer and environmental campaigner and is an ambassador for the new SEEDS financial ecosystem. This story is about how Roz actually became to be one of the most accomplished ocean rowers in the world. She claims to have only ever been quite good at sport and she says she is by no means a natural rower. Roz's story is one of amazing accomplishment, courage and resilience and how she found happiness and meaning being alone on the oceans. As the world comes out of lockdown, Roz has an interesting perspective on being alone and on solitude. Please do leave a review, rating and subscribe. Thank you. www.rozsavage.com www.joinseeds.com
Roz Savage changed her life in her thirties, when through an environment epiphany, she completely shifted her direction from her current role in management consulting to become a world class adventurer. As you and I spent our days commuting to class or the office, she was rowing across the oceans for many months at a time, completely alone. She has completed the Big 3 oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian, and consequently become a powerful voice both for the environment and personal development. Appearing on numerous TV channels, talk shows, TED talks, and with 3 published books, the most recent of which, The Gifts of Solitude, being relevant to our situation in the pandemic, she has plenty of wonderful insight. In this conversation, I wanted to hear about her current adventure, where she has taken on a PhD. From this, we talk about her perspective on changing course in life, identifying, even if just through awareness, the areas of our life we want to redirect. She explains these thoughts with examples from her own life, and shares, what I believe to be a very inspiring message of hope - that our futures and the future of our world, are inextricably linked to our internal states of being. I had a lot of fun listening to Roz and her stories and I know you will too. The first woman to row solo across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Author of https://www.thegiftsofsolitude.com, inspired by coronavirus. In order to truly have the life you want; the career, house, family, relationships, car, lifestyle, wealth, freedom, you name it….you must learn what success is and where it comes from, starting with how you think. In today’s episode your host, Heather J. Crider, CEO of Digital Architect Media, high-performance strategist, neurocoach, author, and speaker, interviews world-class adventurer, author, and speaker, Roz Savage. So often we desire to have an amazing quality of life. One where we are firing on all cylinders in each key area; personal, financial, professional, etc. However, it doesn’t always work out that we get all we desire. Maybe life is great personally, but not so great financially, or vice versa. Do we notice what’s going on? Do we ignore our dissatisfaction? How are these ‘imbalances’ affecting all areas of our lives? Even amongst times when stress is higher and uncertainty is all around us, this is the perfect time to reflect on who we are and how we show up. It’s a perfect time to start and examine all areas of our life and more importantly, our reactions. This is when we must stop and ask some tough questions. Are we really happy? Are we living a life that fulfills us? Are we sabotaging our success with stories in our heads to protect us from certain emotions? Let’s face it, asking these questions can be hard work sometimes. Even more so, when we feel overwhelmed or especially uncertain about our futures, how do we even start to ask these questions? Listen to this episode on The Go Reflect Yourself Podcast where Roz Savage, a former management consultant, started a journey with some simple questions about her future. Once she started reflecting, she realized the life path she was on was not one that filled her up. Her journey led her to a radical career change becoming a world-class adventurer embarking on voyages of long periods of solitude, becoming the first (and so far, only) female to row solo across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. She had to redefine her comfort zone on a daily basis and reach deep into her inner sources of strength, self-discipline, and commitment. Listen now to learn more about Roz’s story as well as how to embrace solitude, increase resilience, and stretch beyond your comfort zone for long-lasting change. In this episode, we discuss the power of solitude and how to start self-reflecting to learn more adaptability, resilience, and how to survive amongst the worst storms we encounter. In this episode of Go Reflect Yourself, Roz and I uncover what it takes to make courageous reflective decisions. What you’ll learn: Why you should take time to journal and reflect How to succeed by creating a life of your dreams Why success depends on your ability to have awareness How to enhance your awareness How to listen to your intuition How to survive in solitude How to self-reflect and learn resilience Tune in and as you watch or listen to this special episode. Pause every 5-10 minutes and mindfully reflect on what you just heard. Write down your thoughts, then yawn and stretch before proceeding. Roz Savage is the first (and so far only) woman to row solo across the world's "Big Three" oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian. She holds four Guinness World Records, and her new book "The Gifts of Solitude: A Short Guide to Surviving and Thriving in Isolation" has just been released.
Best known as the first (and so far only) woman to row solo across the world's “Big Three” oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian - Rosalind Savage inspires us to think again about what is possible, and encourages us to step up fully into the potential of our highest selves. After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in law, Roz spent the first eleven years of her career working as a management consultant, braving nothing more intrepid than rush hour on the London Underground, before an environmental epiphany led to a radical personal transformation into a world class adventurer. During the seven years of her ocean rowing career, Roz Savage had more chance than most to explore the far horizons of courage. Spending up to five months alone at sea on a 23-foot rowboat, thousands of miles from land and humanity, at the mercy of winds, waves and currents, she evolved from a nervous novice adventurer into the world's foremost female ocean rower. While crossing a total of fifteen thousand miles of ocean she had to redefine her comfort zone on a daily basis, and reach deep into her inner sources of strength, self-discipline, and commitment to her goal. She discovered the vital importance of keeping a cool head in life-endangering situations, to optimize her capacity for smart decision-making, accurate risk assessment and creative problem-solving. She now combines her self-taught life skills with principles from neuroscience, psychology, personal development and leadership theory, to inform and inspire corporate audiences. She has spoken to tens of thousands of people across six continents, including Google, eBay, Hershey, Disney, Kaiser Permanente, National Geographic, the Royal Geographical Society, TED and TEDx, plus numerous schools, universities and corporations. Roz has appeared on numerous TV channels including CBS, ESPN, Fox News, Channel Four and the BBC, and has been a frequent guest on various radio stations including NPR, BBC (Radio Four, World Service), and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She has been featured in a wide range of newspapers including the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Observer, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express, The Financial Times and the Evening Standard. Magazine features include Sports Illustrated, Grazia, Red, Outside Magazine and Fortune Magazine. She has written for numerous magazines and websites including Forbes and the Huffington Post, and contributed to over a dozen books on conservation, adventure, lifestyle and women. A documentary based on her Atlantic voyage, “Rowing the Atlantic”, was screened in 32 countries as a finalist in the prestigious Banff Mountain Film Festival. Roz has authored three books: “Rowing The Atlantic: Lessons Learned on the Open Ocean”, "Stop Drifting, Start Rowing” and "The Gifts of Solitude: A Short Guide to Surviving and Thriving in Isolation". In 2010 she was named Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic. In 2012 she was a World Fellow at Yale. In 2013 she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honors for services to fundraising and the environment. In 2017 she took up a position at Yale, lecturing on Courage in Theory and Practice. On this episode, Roz shares her one way ticket to the year 2067. She also reflects on her epic journeys across three oceans, offers thoughts on creating an environmentally sound planet, and provides direction in leading a more impactful and meaningful life. Roz is just one of the dynamic personalities featured on The One Way Ticket Show, where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. Destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Fashion Expert, Tim Gunn; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Playwright, David Henry Hwang; Journalist-Humorist-Actor, Mo Rocca; SkyBridge Capital Founder & Co-Managing Partner, Anthony Scaramucci; Abercrombie & Kent Founder, Geoffrey Kent; Travel Expert, Pauline Frommer, as well as leading photographers, artists, chefs, writers, intellectuals and more.
In a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst a global pandemic of Coronavirus, the journalist John McCarthy brings together reflections from people of faith around the world. In this third programme, John hears how isolation and solitude can be an opportunity to develop a deeper spiritual practice. When the mind throws up challenges – doubt, fear – what comfort and opportunities does faith provide? Solitude is often sought after and even craved by many people of faith, but the chance to share the energy of worship with others enhances their closeness to their deity. The Buddhist devotional dancer Prumsodun Ok, has to step back from his busy teaching schedule in Cambodia but he sees this as a chance to slow down and re-connect with the spiritual aspect of his dance. We hear from round the world solo rower Roz Savage who describes herself as having faith rather than a religion and a pastor who’s new to solitude but thinks he might like it. Reverend Julian DeShazier works at the busy multicultural University Church in Chicago, USA where he is also an advocate for his community. He’s also an Emmy award winning musician and songwriter who goes by the name of J.Kwest . He’s turned to bible stories to help him through lockdown. As the world faces the prospect of many months of lockdown we hear how faith and religion can bring comfort and succour to those living in solitude. Presenter: John McCarthy Producer: Olive Clancy

So she used her voyages to expand her own limits, and to promote sustainable living. She now writes, speaks, and lectures on sustainability, courage, resilience, and change. After learning about the power of writing your own funeral speech and how Roz lived on a rowing boat for more than 500 days in part 1, we were wondering how life looks like for her 10 years after her adventures. In part 2 we talk about her recent doctorate about different styles of leadership in times of disruption, her new book „The Gifts of Solitude“ that was inspired by the Corona Virus and written within a month and the power of frameworks for your own personal journey. Make sure to grab a coffee if you haven't already, sit back and relax. Here is a link to all the books and articles that were mentioned in the episode: https://bit.ly/listofbooksrozmentionedSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/einpodkaffee)
Roz Savage is the first women to row solo across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean. Philipp met her in a university class in late 2019 and was amazed not only by her courage but also by the dramatic shift her life had taken. After being a management consultant for 11 years, Roz wrote her own funeral speech. Five years later she somehow found herself alone in the middle of the ocean in a rowing boat. She told us how rowing for 12 hours a day with a sore bottom feels like, how to listen to your soul to find meaning and how to make your wildest dreams become a reality step-by-step. As Roz had so many inspiring things to say, we decided to make this a two part series. We will publish Part 2 next Wednesday at midnight. James Navé here. It's my pleasure to welcome ocean rower and environmental activist Roz Savage to the Twice 5 Miles Radio microphone. In 2007, when Roz Savage stepped on the Sheridan Opera House stage 8,750 feet above sea level at the Telluride Mountain Film festival, I had never considered that you could row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. I soon learned that you could indeed row solo across the Atlantic Ocean if you have enough grit and determination like Roz. During her talk, I learned she had plans in the works to row solo across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Roz and I had excellent conversations during the film festival. She told me that she believed that her act of rowing over 15,000 miles with 5 million oar strokes, over 500 days in a 23-foot rowboat, would give her the sea-creds and public attention to promote her more critical leadership goal of global climate activism for the rest of her life. Roz said, ” “not only can we all make a difference — we all have to.” This show was aired first on WPVMFM, 103.7, Asheville, North Carolina.
"Bring your energy to the here and now.” ~Roz Savage For this Mind Bullet Monday, we explore the idea of taking things one stroke at a time. A little backstory: Eco-activist Roz Savage wrote the foreword for The Habit Factor after using the app to reach her goal of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean (she subsequently rowed across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well). When discussing with a friend how someone can tackle the enormous task of rowing across an ocean, the answer was readily apparent: one stroke at a time. This idea has ramifications throughout life and its challenges. Roz writes about the overwhelming obstacles she faced in her Atlantic journey and being flooded with despair—until she decided to regain her focus, take control of the here and now, and inch closer to her goal by focusing on the process. Listen in to hear more about the idea of tackling challenges one stroke at a time, how Roz Savage regained focused on her goal, and how we can all learn the lessons of overcoming the obstacles of life one stroke at a time. It is not an understatement to say that today’s interview changed my soul! I was so moved by Roz Savage’s story and the more I dove into it the more captivated I became. Roz is the very first woman to row solo across the world’s biggest oceans. She holds 4 Guinness World Records for rowing. We spent over an hour to talk about what triggered her to leave her “perfect on paper life” and set out on a path to completely rewrite the course of her life. When she set out on this path she didn’t know how to row, she ended her marriage and said goodbye to a regular income. She does acknowledge early on in our conversation that she is privileged to have chosen her adversity, knowing it wasn’t thrust upon her by a tragedy. But no matter which way the adversity comes to you, she is certain that the learning potential is equal to the struggle. “The scale of the learning is directly correlated to the scale of the struggle to get there.” ~ Roz Savage If you have that feeling that there must be “more” or are looking for the courage to make a change you know you should, this conversation is for you! You will be left thinking, as I was, can you change your life as dramatically as Roz did? The answer is yes! You can find your way out of the waiting room too! I’d love to hear what you think of this conversation and how you see it translating to your own life. Be sure to comment below or connect with me on Instagram to tell me all about it. I can’t believe it’s been about three years since I first aired this episode with Roz Savage, the first woman to row solo across three oceans. Honestly, I remember feeling so nervous, not so much during the conversation, but more so in sharing the interview, as it was the first show that launched the podcast. Today, my editor, Anne, recut this so it’s lively, fresh and even more revelatory. (Quick note: This episode is from the archive and available when you subscribe to the podcast on ApplePodcasts.com/Heroine or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also stream it live from any browser on spreaker.com/heroine). Give yourself a second to really think about the fact that Roz rows across oceans alone. She sits in a small boat, day after day, with little besides the cold waves for company and the sea mist hitting her face. This is a woman who is comfortable with solitude….and freedom. But when Roz started rowing, she was, in her words, “just a management consultant” from the UK. So...how did she get to that wide, open ocean? What drives someone to leave everything they’ve known for so long to achieve a distant goal? In a way, that’s really the central question of this podcast. How do we stop being good girls and start being the heroines we’re meant to be? How do we write our own stories, create our own myths? How do we activate our own potential - even when it goes against all of our social conditioning?Roz ended up leaving her ordinary life because she sat down one day and wrote herself two obituaries. It sounds morbid, but for Roz it was clarifying. In one version, she had lived life as a business woman, in control and with fancy clothes. In the other, well, I won’t give too much away. Let’s just say, in the other obituary, her clothes didn’t matter. References:Roz Savage’s book, "Rowing the Atlantic: Lessons Learned on the Open Ocean." One of the reasons I started this podcast was to share women’s stories – showing us as complex, nuanced, and still very much in progress. But as we know, stories like this have only become available to us recently. I remember as a little girl, being bombarded by Disney Princesses, witches, and evil step mothers who were one dimensional and pretty flat. But a lot of these characters were based on older stories which were far darker, even more multi-layered and satisfying. Old folk tales that show us the full dimensionality of who we are as women. That’s why this season, we’re going to explore these older tales and uncover more about ourselves in the process. Have you ever felt like a major Queen, stirring up drama for yourself and those around you? Or have you ever felt like a waif, a kind of frail woman, who is too breakable to take on a challenge? For the first half of this new season, we’ll explore how there are more to these female archetypes (and stereotypes!) than what we see on the surface. We’ll talk about how by embodying and rejecting them, they play out in our personal and professional lives. Ok, so that will be the first part of the season. For the second part, my editor Anne Hoffman and I have curated and freshened up four interviews from the archive that relate to the theme of archetypes. You’re going to hear from record-breaking rower Roz Savage (she was my first interview ever), Justine Musk, a writer and the ex-wife of Elon Musk, design icon Eileen Fisher, and from New York Times Award-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario. Even if you’ve listened to these episodes, I guarantee you will hear something new in them the second or third time. Also, I invite you to connect with me on my website that has a ton of free resources for you such as a Rituals e-Guide, Creative Confidence Playbook, articles, and also a free guided meditation. Check it out on majo.co (MAJO.CO). An episode will be released every Thursday as usual – and the season will run for eight weeks starting on April 11th. Onward!

Contact: @rozsavage Website: Rozsavage.com Here at Coffee Pods we love an adventurous spirit. This week, we have a true adventurer for you. I'm really excited to introduce you to Roz Savage. She's the first, and so far only woman to row solo across the world's big three oceans. The Atlantic, the Pacific, and Indian. I'm talking single-scull rowing, as in stroke by stroke, across the three big oceans of the world. She holds four Guinness World Records, and was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire for services to fundraising and the environment. Roz has so many environmental roles, but notably, she's a UN climate hero. Now all this is quite an extraordinary achievement for a former management consultant who doesn't particularly enjoy exercise. This is a really interesting conversation. We talk about energy management, we talk about taking on audacious goals, how it is that you push outside of your comfort zone, and battle the talk in your head that says you can't do it. You name it, it's in this conversation. It's utterly inspiring, and there's so many pragmatic take-aways to walk away with. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Roz Savage is one of the most interesting people I've ever chatted with, let alone interviewed for the podcast. She's fiercely smart, but chose to leave behind her successful career in corporate consulting to row across 3 major oceans all by herself! I was curious about what motivates someone to undertake such a quest, how she endured it,and what she learned along the way. Roz has since authored a number of books, give speeches all over the world, and even been invited to Yale to teach a course on courage. All those accolades and she's still incredibly down to earth. I'm sure you'll agree that her bold adventure is beyond inspiring so take a listen and leave a comment below! "It all started to seem frighteningly doable." IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: How starting with the “end in mind” is what led her to radically change her life to avoid regrets and lack of fulfillment. Why she kicked off her adventure with a trip to Peru, and what happened when she tried Ayahuasca. Why she chose rowing as her sport of choice, and what led her to decide to cross the three major oceans. How her mission to raise environmental awareness played into her quest. What courses and classes she needed to take to prepare, and how many hours per day she needed to train. How she survived when all 4 of her oars were broken by massive waves. "There was nothing in that work that fed my soul and I can remember... I just felt like my soul was dying" ~Roz Roz Savage holds a law degree from Oxford, is a Yale World Fellow, a Guinness World Record Holder, and the only woman to have rowed across three oceans: The Atlantic, Pacific and Indian (in that order). Yet, Roz spills her guts in this candid interview about being a "recovering management consultant" terribly unhappy chasing a three-car garage and professional career, all while she sensed her "soul was dying." Out of desperation and a great sense of urgency, "while there was still a soul left to shrivel," she dives into the world of self-help/personal development and comes across Covey's great work, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. She is struck by Habit #2, which is: "Begin with the end in mind," so she does exactly that by writing two versions of her obituary, one as if nothing were to change and the other as if she had led her ideal life. Roz is from England and into her 30’s she was living a life of materialism chasing the big house and big money as a management consultant but she quit it all to pursue a life with purpose. Now, she is the first woman to row solo across 3 oceans, the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans and she did it in a 23 foot rowboat. in 2010 she was named Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic. We talk about endurance, perseverance, minimalism, facing death and letting go of a materialistic life and mindset to transcend self-imposed limits and build a platform for environmental activism. She’s now a lecturer at Yale University teaching a course titled: Courage in Theory & Practice. Buy Roz's book In this episode she answers… What did your life look like before you pulled the ripcord? What personal and material possessions where you giving up? What was the hardest and scariest part of making the transition? How do you go from a Management Consultant living a normal life crossing the Atlantic ocean in a 23 foot row boat? How do you fund your projects and pay for your boat? How often have you felt like you were on the brink of death? What did it feel like to see land after so many days at sea? What does your life, business model and a typical week of an environmental activist look like today? What does your course at Yale titled Courage in Theory & Practice actually teach students? You currently have 4 world records, do you have your sights set on any others? What can each of us do in our daily lives to treat the environment better? She explains how the simple step of not buying plastic water bottles can have a huge impact on our water resources. Roz was living a normal life but chose to chase her passion of environmental education by creating a global platform and she’s done it one oar stroke at a time. Steering a small boat across oceans by yourself - why do it? Kim Chakanetsa meets two women who have been alone at sea for months - and they chat about encountering sharks, avoiding pirates and having to call their mums. Roz Savage is the first woman to have rowed solo across three oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. She had no background as an adventurer and in fact was a UK management consultant for years, but in her 30s she decided to do something completely different with her life. Roz says rowing the Atlantic was a huge struggle physically and mentally, but afterwards she wanted to put herself in even more challenging situations to see if she could do it, and to raise awareness about sustainability. Australian Jessica Watson sailed around the world when she was just 16, battling storms and isolation, but also fierce criticism from those who thought she was too young. On her return after 210 days she was greeted by the Prime Minister and tens of thousands of people, and was later named Young Australian of the Year. Jessica says she did it partly to prove that young people, and young girls, can be serious and achieve incredible things, and they should not be dismissed. (Photo: (L) Roz Savage sat in her row boat. A very inspiring show. Always great to chat with Ed Begley, Jr. who has been a big inspiration for us green divas and green dudes and we talked with someone who is working with him on his new home, eco-designer Rachel Winokur, with some startling statistics about rugs and where many come from and how they are made. But the seriously WOW amazing inspiration comes from Roz Savage, a woman who rowed across 3 oceans BY HERSELF to help raise awareness about environmental issues. wow.
Roz Savage is the first and only woman to solo row across three oceans--the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian--and was named National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year in 2010. Our AMA with her featured stories from her solo crossings, how she got into ocean rowing, and how to chase down your goals and live courageously. Be inspired by one of today's greatest adventurers instaviser.com/rozsavage
One of my favorite guests, Roz Savage combines the fierce heart of an adventurer with the ability to describe beautifully the wildest & loneliest places on the planet. As a Guinness World Record holder (first woman to row solo across 3 oceans), Roz is a shining example of someone following her dream. She started out as a money hungry young professional, saying “I was laboring under the illusion that money was going to make me happy.” Working in London alongside the rest of the sharks (and whales) cured her of that drive; she realized it was an illusion, and in a famous story wrote down two obituaries. First, the one she was headed for, and second, the one she wanted.Staring her in the face was her whole future, and it wasn't one she wanted. “I realized to my great embarrassment and shame that the dream that I'd been chasing for 11 years was not the right dream.”She was ““…actually quite terrified of the implications of realizing I was living the wrong dream. I had to self-sabotage because I didn't have the courage to change.”So, cutting ties with job, relationships, and material possessions, she set out to row across the Atlantic and began to live the path she actually wanted.Along the way she learned when to use the word fail (or really, what to replace it with) as well as what the right questions to ask were. Having lost her self confidence in her 20s as a management consultant she regained it out in the middle of the ocean.Listen in to Roz as she describe her most harrowing experience as well as her most beautiful, and revel in the accomplishments of another human in pursuit of excellence. If you'd like to learn more about Roz, please check out her book “Rowing the Atlantic” or “Stop Drifting, Start Rowing” or www.rozsavage.com or if you'd like to learn more about her coaching check out rozsavagecoaching.comEnjoy!NFH
To those who looked in at the life of Roz Savage several years ago, they would have seen someone who appeared to have it all - the A grade graduate, the successful Management Consultant, living the central London lifestyle that goes with it. Yet, little did they know how out of place Roz felt in this life and how she was constantly facing an array of internal battles with herself. In our interview today we embark upon the journey Roz undertook in order to discover who she really was and what her life's path should be. A path that has led her to become one of the most acclaimed solo ocean rowers in the world. There was only a very small window where I was able to catch up with Roz to record this interview, which we did at the Thames Rowing Club in Putney. As a result, there is a little more background noise than normal, including some clinking as the Bar was re-stocked, so please accept my apologies for that. Key messages from Roz: Ensure that you live a life you can (look back on and) be proud of If you are not passionate about your life / career, take the time to ask yourself why It is never too late to find your true calling in life Do not be scared to fail - this is the only way to move on Accept that you may need to go backwards before you can move forwards The harder something is, the more amazing it feels when you achieve it! Roz Savage Arrives in Hawaii from hawaii on Vimeo. Solo rower Roz Savage arrived at the Waikiki Yacht Club on Labor Day after 99 days at sea. A throng of fans, supporters, and reporters were on hand to celebrate the historic journey across the Pacific. The above is the embedded video player from Vimeo, one of the few online video hosts to serve up HD content. To see the HD video (and not a scaled and compressed Flash version), however, you need to view it at Vimeo or download the original movie file (1280x720/MP4). It should look great on an Apple TV. You can also watch this video via low quality but fast loading Flash players at YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, Viddler, and Blip TV. And several versions of this video (including high-definition MPEG-4 and DivX) can be downloaded from the Internet Archive.
