By the late 1980s the Militant tendency, the organization which Ted Grant led before founding our international, became the most successful Trotskyist tendency in Britain since the founding of Trotsky's Left Opposition. At its height Militant was a household name. Everybody knew about the Militant Tendency, not just in Britain but internationally. Militant controlled the Labour Party Young Socialists, had a growing influence in the Labour Party and the unions, had more than 50 councilors and 3 Members of Parliament. It led the Liverpool City Council in battle with the Tory government and also the multi-million strong anti-Poll Tax Campaign, which eventually brought down Thatcher! And yet, today not a single trace is left of what was built. So what went wrong? To educate comrades on this important history and draw out the lessons for building the Revolutionary Communist International today, Communist Revolution editor Joel Bergman presents on how the Militant was built, and how it was destroyed.#communist #marxist #revolutionarycommunistinternational #rci #internationalmarxisttendency #imt#tedgrant #grantism #trotskyist #trotskyism #britishtrotskyism #trotsky #themilitant #militanttendency #cwi #committeeforaworkersinternational #socialistpartybritain #socialistalternative #taaffe #petertaaffe

In this ‘In Conversation' event, Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester and Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, discuss their new book, Head North, which sets out a vision for a more balanced and inclusive future for the UK. Drawing on their experiences in Westminster and local government, the Mayors reflect on the challenges of centralised decision-making, the impact of devolution, and the shortcomings of successive ‘levelling up' policies. With reference to their ten-point plan for reform, the discussion explores how shifting power away from Westminster could contribute to a more equitable distribution of opportunity and prosperity across the UK. Abouts the Speakers: Andy Burnham was first elected as Mayor of Greater Manchester in May 2017, re-elected for a second term in May 2021, and again for a third term in May 2024. Mr Burham's priorities for his third term include continuing to build a London-style integrated transport system, ending the housing crisis by 2038, offering a new technical education pathway as an alternative to university, and creating a new Live Well service. Before being elected Mayor of Greater Manchester, Mr Burnham was MP for Leigh from 2001. In government, he has held Ministerial positions at the Home Office, Department of Health and the Treasury. In 2008, he became Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, before returning to Health as Secretary of State in 2009. In opposition, Andy has served as Shadow Education Secretary, Shadow Health Secretary, and Shadow Home Secretary. Steve Rotheram began his political career when he was elected to serve as a councillor in 2002, representing Fazakerley ward on Liverpool City Council and held the ceremonial title of Lord Mayor of Liverpool through the city's European Capital of Culture year in 2008. In 2010, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Liverpool Walton constituency. While in Westminster, he led campaigns for justice for the Hillsborough families; in support of blacklisted workers; for compensation for those suffering from mesothelioma and asbestosis; and to change the law on the use of old tyres on buses and coaches. In 2017, Mr Rotheram was elected as the first ever Liverpool City Region Mayor, representing 1.6m people across the boroughs of Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral and was subsequently re-elected in 2021. In 2024, he was elected for a third term as Mayor. Mayor Rotheram has pledged to return to council housebuilding at scale, to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) into the region, to build three new train stations, and to launch a free pilot of artificial intelligence (AI) in local schools. He has also revised the region's net zero target to 2035 – the most ambitious target for a city region in the country.

The Northern Agenda

The Northern Agenda editor Rob Parsons is joined by Liam Thorp, political editor of the Liverpool Echo, to take a look back on some of the big stories in Northern politics. One of which involves Michael Gove, now back in post as Levelling Up Secretary, who is stepping up the government's intervention into Liverpool City Council. Liam gives his verdict on the expanded intervention in Merseyside. And whilst 93% of people went to state schools in the UK, they make up a much smaller proportion of our top professions.Just a third are FTSE 350 CEOs, 35% are senior judges, 43% make up the House of Lords, and just over half are journalists. But there's a pretty new organisation that's joining the fight to level up those numbers. It's called the 93% Club, and it describes itself as a members' club to rival some of the most exclusive and expensive clubs in the UK. According to their website, they're taking a centuries-old system and repurposing it to change society and tackle social immobility head on. And on Friday this week, it's hosting a big Northern conference in central Manchester. Over a hundred students are travelling to the city for a day of upskilling, networking and community building to show the wealth of opportunities available outside of London and the South East. Imogen Carr, mentoring lead for the 93% club, explains how they want to create an alternative to the 'old boys network' and make it easier for talented young people in the North to break into these top professions. The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. Liverpool City Council Chief Executive Tony Reeves says it will take time for the city to re-emerge after the pandemic and restrictions – but he says our actions so far, including UK firsts like mass testing and thinking ahead with a crucial recovery plan, mean it can, and will, happen. Tony says: “What set us apart from a lot of other places was we saw from the outset that this lockdown and pandemic was going to be very damaging to the economy and was going to lead to a prolonged economic shutdown for key sectors, and that we needed to be planning for recovery right from then. “We started work in the first couple of weeks of the first lockdown back in March last year to plan economic recovery and submitted a plan to the government about six weeks before anyone else in the country. “And we have been working hard to implement that plan ever since.”

Farrelly, who netted a famous Goodison goal against Coventry City to help the Blues avoid a final-day relegation in 1998, expresses his excitement at the new stadium designs and explains both why the move is so important to Everton and why he has no doubts the Club's links with the community around its existing home will remain as strong as ever.

"Well I came back to Liverpool and the first job I had was running what is still there now - the Bronte Community Centre by the Bullring in St Andrews Gardens and there was a big housing thing going on there so I got involved in that and then after that did two or three other things along the same sort of lines but while I was doing all that, that was when I was starting to get more and more political and I suppose although they were great, great jobs I had and great opportunities I had, none the less in the back of my mind, the whole development of my political thing started to get more and more and took more and more of my time in the thinking. And then I joined Labour Party in '74, I became part of Militant in '74 - there for five years. Was very active in the Labour Party and the trade union movement and eventually got elected as a councillor in 1979 the very same day that Thatcher became prime minister."We get to know all about Derek's influences as a politician and his views on politics over the years.

We have a Blood Red podcast with a difference for you as Sean Bradbury is joined by the Liverpool ECHO’s political editor Liam Thorp to explore the concerns that have grown on Merseyside following the Champions League match between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid at Anfield on March 11. Despite growing fears around coronavirus in England, the match was allowed to be played in front of 52,000 supporters – which included around 3,000 travelling fans from Madrid, where at the time the virus was rife and where gatherings of more than 1,000 people had been banned. It is impossible to answer whether the match – the last major football game to be staged in England before the country went into lockdown – led to the significant spread of coronavirus in Liverpool. But what Liam, who has covered this story extensively, taking it even to Downing Street, can answer, is what the thought-process was of the authorities before the match, and how it has changed since. He also talks about the investigation launched by Liverpool City Council into the game – and the response he got when he put the concerns felt by many on Merseyside about it to the government. It was a response that made back-page national news. The Liverpool Echo sends a twice-daily Liverpool FC bulletin out via email with the all latest news, views and analysis from Anfield. In this one off special Liverpool Podcast, Mick Ord speaks to one of UK's leading experts on urban regeneration says the financial challenges faced by Liverpool City Council today are greater than those faced by the Militant Labour council in the 1980's. Professor Michael Parkinson has just published Liverpool - Beyond the Brink, more than 30 years after Liverpool - On the Brink, written at the height of the council's political struggles with the conservative government of Margaret Thatcher when the city teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. In the 80's the council were involved in a bitter financial tug of war with the government after what they saw as savage cuts to their budget and their policy of building council houses and sports centres and refusal to make cuts to their budget. The battle eventually led to the 47 Labour councillors being fined and banned from office by the district auditor. Professor Parkinson is now Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for civic engagement at the University of Liverpool and Ambassador for the Heseltine Institute for Publicy Policy and Practice. His new book looks back at how far Liverpool has come over the past 30 years and what needs to be done now to ensure more prosperity comes to the region. Although we've come a long way, he argues we still have some way to go to overcome the financial pressures facing the city and the challenge of Brexit. In this special edition of the Baltic Triangle podcast Professor Parkinson has been talking to Mick Ord about the hopes, dreams and challenges for the Merseyside region having spent much of his academic career studying the economics of the region.

Today’s guest is Julie O’Grady, Head of Sales, Marketing, and Events for Liverpool's Neptune Brewery. Although Julie is relatively new to her current full-time role at Neptune, she’s been part of the brewery since it opened in 2015, as she and her husband, Les, founded the brewery together. For the first few years, Julie was working full time for the NHS, then Liverpool City Council, and would help out with brewery on nights and weekends. (She'd squeeze in a few tweets during her lunch break is well!) Julie’s involvement in the beer community goes beyond Neptune though. Just before the brewery opened, Julie founded Ladies That Beer, a meet-up group for beer loving ladies based in Liverpool, because she noticed a lack of women at the beer festivals she was attending. From its beginnings is a social group, Ladies That Beer has taken on new aims to engage, educate, and empower women who love beer. Hence why Julie was one of the co-organizers of the event I recorded at today, the Ladies' Big Beery Meet-up. Julie from Ladies That Beer and Alix Shaw from the Crafty Beer Girls (who you heard from in Episode 002 of Beer with Nat) planned this event in Manchester to bring beer loving ladies from across the country together for an afternoon. And that’s where I recorded my first ever live episode of Beer with Nat!  (It's pretty similar to a regular episode, but with a few more woos and claps from my ever-so-engaged audience! Thanks all!) In this episode, Julie talks us through her and Les's decision to open Neptune Brewery (and the fun story of where the name came from!), along with what it was like to balance the brewery work and her full-time job, to when she knew she was ready to make the transition to beer full-time. She tells us what aspects of her work she’s most passionate about, what she likes to get up to outside of beer, and what she enjoys best about being a part of the beer industry. Here she is...

Kenny Saunders has been campaigning for grass roots football for 40 years and he told Mick Coyle how he feels he may have to walk away if new fees are implemented for junior football teams. Kenny believes that the council and Premier League teams need to do more to help local children who play football and that there should be a levy imposed on Premier League teams to go towards grass roots football. He was also joined by Phil Rooney from the Edge Hill Junior Football League. This week I've hopped on a train and spent time finding out about Liverpool and what it was like being European City of Culture 2008. Clearly the city is not in North Staffordshire but it has a lot of similarities. This is part one of an interview with Claire McColgan who is Director of Culture at Liverpool City Council. #sot2021 #cityofculture2021 #culture #Liverpool Photo credit - Neil Martin from Pexels https://www.pexels.com/photo/albert-dock-architecture-bridge-buildings-465654/ Music credit: The Big House by Jason Shaw See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

After a mid-morning editorial meeting we were given a reporting assignment and asked to produce a 1 minute package by 5pm. My topic was the proposed £2 million modernization of St John's Market by Liverpool City Council. In recent years the market has noticeably declined and many stalls are now shuttered and empty. Will giving a facelift to the entrance and interior attract more customers? I went to the market to find out more. This report was included in the March 28, 2014 edition of NBS Tonight, the National Broadcasting School's online news show.
