While Jerry's birthday is not until Sunday, I felt that there could be no better way to start off the 'Days Between' than with this humdinger of a show from August 1st, 1973. I realize this is only days after last week's Deadpod fom Watkins Glen, but, hey its one of the few, and probably the greatest of Jerry's Birthday show with the band. Now this version of the events is captured on what I feel is an excellent audience recording. The existing soundboard, especially for this first set, is fairly degraded and I think this audience recording is quite good - I hope you agree. I'm a fan of the 'Sugaree' here, as well as Donna's 'You Ain't Woman Enough' which is a crowd pleaser. The 'Bird Song' that follows is excellent and features two nice jams. The rest of the set is quite well played, with the set ending with an unusually fine 'Casey Jones'. Next week I'll play set 2 - which will include a beautiful soundboard capture of a wonderful Dark Star. Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/1/73 - Wednesday One [59:33] ; The Promised Land [3:02] ; Sugaree [7:51] ; The Race Is On [2:57] ; You Ain't Woman Enough [3:04] ; Bird Song [10:51] ; Mexicali Blues [3:19] ; They Love Each Other [5:07] ; Jack Straw [4:39] ; Stella Blue [7:23] ; Big River [4:38] ; Casey Jones [6:42] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod073021.mp3 This show took place on Garcia's 31st birthday.. August 1 would have marked his 79th! Thank you for listening and for your kind support of the Deadpod.

Jerry Izenberg might not be a recognizable name to most sport’s fans, but it’s one that will be eternally remembered when it comes to all sports. You see, Jerry Izenberg is one of the greatest writers to ever put pen to paper when it comes to covering the games we love to watch. Jerry spent time at several newspapers, most notably though, he spent most of his career writing for a paper that so few know (unless you live in or near New Jersey), the Newark Star-Ledger. Jerry also wrote, produced and directed sport’s specials and documentaries and authored several books including: “Once There Were Giants” … “The Greatest Game Ever Played” … “No Medals for Trying” … “Rozelle: A Biography”. While Jerry might not be as well-known as some of his contemporaries who wrote for larger newspapers, guys like Dave Anderson, Red Smith, Jim Murray, Jimmy Cannon, Shirley Povich or Frank Deford, doesn’t mean he was every bit as good – or better. So many couldn’t wait to get a copy of the paper every morning to read Jerry. But Jerry was even more! He found stories where no one dared to go before him. To make a stand and cover issues that others thought had no business being in the sport’s pages; and his work to raise money through sport’s endeavors has gone unnoticed by so many. Well, writer and author Ed Odeven recently sat down with Jerry and many of his fellow writers to put together a new book, “Going 15-Round with Jerry Izenberg,” and joins me on this special edition of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes where we don’t discuss a hero on the field, rather we focus on a hero who helped make the game more interesting for all of us. While Jerry is off moving a friend, Dave decides to record the first episode of his new podcast 'Fatty Stokes". Joined by the Hilarious duo from the Hoof podcast, Christopher Laudando and Tommy Lombardozzi tell us stories of how they met, future guests and touch a little on the pandemic. Which led to the question "where are the lone gunmen"!
This week I chose to bring you an unusual show from November 2, 1984 at the Berkeley Community Theater. This was the 4th show of a 5 show run at this small venue, close to home for the band and their fans and it has an intimate feel to it. The band is quite loose, too loose sometimes (listen to Bobby completely lose the lyrics to El Paso) but also interested in mixing things up as you can see from the setlist. A strong 'Jack Straw' starts things up. While Jerry's voice is not at its best this night a wonderful 'Peggy O ' follows then the aforesaid 'El Paso', saved as it were by a great Garcia solo. Jerry perhaps sticks it to Bobby a bit with the 'Loser' that follows, but that goes into what is probably the highlight of the set a nice 'Smokestack Lightning>Spoonful' combination. The set ends, quite early, with 'Iko, Iko' with a very unusual opening.. We'll hear a solid set 2 from this show next week.. Grateful Dead Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, CA 11/2/84 - Friday One Jack Straw [6:29] > Peggy-O [7:06] ; El Paso [6:09] ; Loser [6:55] > Smokestack Lightnin' [6:16] > Spoonful [4:23] ; Iko Iko [8:23] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111519.mp3 My thanks to the kind friends who support the Deadpod!
The not so dynamic duo are back at it again....x2. Yeah that’s right, Jerry and Coach Kev had a whole other podcast recorded up and ready for the press.... Until Coach Kev forgot to press his mic all the way in. So instead of the amazing information and funny jokes, it was just a bunch of noise and nonsense. Luckily, Kev didn’t TOTALLY fail at quality control, and the guys linked up for an impromptu Chop Up Session! Out the gate, while Kev quenches his thirst, he ponders the idea of being “thirsty.” Is it wrong? Is it bad? Or is it natural? While Jerry thinks about this...he then tries to juggle the idea of being thirsty vs being whipped. But this leads to another question...is being whipped in a relationship inherently “bad?” Of course when talking about relationships we gotta discuss trust. Trust fails tend to be the place most people miss the mark in relationships. So when it comes to trust...what’s the line? Hugs and happy hours....can you trust your significant other? As the guys wrap up the chop up, Kev hits us with the question of the day that involves the Chronicles of Dante.... Is it wrong for a man to be uncomfortable getting a Swedish massage from another man? Y’all tune in and join the Chop Up!!!
While Jerry is out doing publicity for his new show "Judge Jerry", we are featuring an episode of "Those Stupid Galvins" This is part two of the story where Jene tells a harrowing account of a back country camping encounter he experienced with some friends. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to THE BWA chop up session. But before we dive into this week’s topics, it’s only right we give you a fair warning: Coach Kev has a whole attitude this episode. It’s a slow build, and it leads to Coach deciding to RETIRE!???! See what had happened was, things kick off to a...random start...with Jerry chatting about Ranch Flavored “pop tarts.” Maybe Coach Kev isn’t a fan of ranch. Maybe Coach Kev isn’t a fan of pop tarts. Either way...Coach threatens to fight CJ when Williams entertains the idea of “pop tarts dipped in ranch.” (Coach Kev trigger level = 3) Jerry then tries to appeal to his Texan side when CJ asks the guys their thoughts on the recent sale of the Whataburger franchise to a Chicago owner. While Jerry feels the burger conglomerate should have “stuck to its Texas roots,” Coach Kev quickly reminds the listeners that in the world of business “expansion” is the name of the game. He also reminds people that Whataburger's REAL competition is not In- N-Out but the infamous McDonalds. “Whataburger gotta get that bread cuz!” (Coach Kev trigger level = 2) At this point things get a little dicey as Jerry tries to proceed to a random ass thought, but Coach Kev intercedes abruptly, questioning Jerry about trending topics. It really seems Coach Kev is passionate about being up to date with what’s happening in pop culture, and even Jerry gets a dose of his spiciness. Coach then demands the listeners to check out Tyler Perry’s recent award reception speech on the BET music awards. (Coach Kev Trigger level = 5) As the podcast then proceeds to conversation about people not washing their hands, people’s struggle with decision making, and the constant habit of focusing on fear....Coach Kev’s trigger levels creep into the red zone. Convinced that people don’t understand the concept of extreme ownership, Kev proclaims “FUCK FEAR,” and suddenly retires. (Coach Kev trigger level = 10) Things turn into a vent session with Kev revealing that he is tired of amazing people choosing to be average. Coach Kev desires people who bring him solutions, not more problems. (By the way, this is about the point where the podcast reaches the rated R. At the 1 hour and 9 minute mark...Coach Kev is beyond triggered) If you can stand the heat, check out the episode. Maybe you’ll be inspired, or at the very least get a kick out of angry Coach! Quote of the day: “Everybody wants more, and better, and bigger...but most people aren’t willing to doing the work. I want to be around people who are so feverishly excited about being their true self and going after what they deserve...that I get excited and want to do better.”
Thanks for joining Ed Werder and Matt Mosley for another edition of The Doomsday Podcast. In this episode Matt and Ed discuss the latest Dallas Cowboys loss. Ed targets Jerry Jones as the architect of this losing streak. Here's a little of what he had to say: Halfway through what would become their worst loss ever at JerryWorld, namesake Jerry Jones, at the ceremony honoring him, said, "What I've tried to do with every breath is to make the Dallas Cowboys better, and to make the NFL better. That's what I try to do and that's what I'm going to do.” Without Ezekiel Elliott, the Cowboys have scored one touchdown in 22 possessions. The running back Jerry built his entire team around and took fourth overall is on a mid season vacation in Cabo of all places. He's serving a suspension. Without Elliott and left tackle Tyron Smith, Dak Prescott has produced one touchdown - none in the last 20 offensive series - and had six turnovers and been sacked 12 times in two games. The Cowboys have been outscored 64-16 in the last two games. This whole season has been about the Cowboys owner and GM, and the unique distraction he always is, has been and will be. For the Cowboys, this season has been about Jones being inducted into the HOF; Jones defending Ezekiel Elliott and trying to make his suspension go away; Jones publicly challenging Commissioner Roger Goodell. And that's why I would argue the Cowboys lost this game and the division title and probably the playoffs in the front office as much as they did on the field at JerryWorld. While Jerry was doing his Jerry things, Eagles GM Howie Roseman was busy doing what the only thing every other NFL GM does. He was focused on building a football team - specifically one that has talent and depth and can withstand the kind of injuries that unraveled the Cowboys. While Dak Prescott endures his worst football nightmares without Elliott and Tyron Smith, the Eagles remade the offense around their second-year quarterback: -- they signed in free agency WR Alshon Jeffrey and Torrey Smith, both with TDs against Dallas. -- they signed LeGarrette Blount, a hammer of a running back who had 57 of the Eagles 215 rushing yards. -- they traded at the deadline for RB Jay Ajayi, who ran for 91 yards, including a 71-yarder that led to a back-breaking TD. The Eagles wanted to make Carson Wentz better and they succeeded by acquiring tough, physical players the Cowboys couldn't overcome. The Eagles signed two running backs. In contrast, here's what Jerry's team did knowing for a year they could lose their best player in Elliott. Nothing to improve the position. They kept veterans Alfred Morris and Darren McFadden, who oddly wasn't active. The Cowboys will blame it on injuries even though attrition is part of the game and it is true they've lost arguably their best offensive, defensive and special teams player. But let's put those side by side and compare it with the situation the Eagles are handling BOTH the Eagles and Cowboys played without their starting left tackle, kicker and best playmaking linebacker. While Jerry had been busy studying for his occupation (which does fund the magic addiction), I had the chance to hang out with someone who shares in the New England Magic experience. We discussed math and eventually talked magic also. I hope you all enjoy. Adrian – @mathematrickster Jerry – @JMee3rd leavingalegacymtg@gmail.com

On this holiday weekend I decided to bring you a complete show from one of my very favorite venues - the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, MO.. This show took place 26 years ago on September 3rd, 1985. While Jerry may not have been in the best of voice that summer, I do have to give the boys props for mixing up the setlists on that tour, and this is a great example of that. I hope you enjoy the show - for me the highlights are a wonderful Eyes of the World, and I suppose I've never heard a 'Comes A Time that didn't move me...
