At the risk of featuring too many sets from this period I decided to bring you this long, wonderful first set from March 22, 1973. While most of these songs don't feature stratospheric jams, they are quite well played in my opinion, and this set does include a truly beautiful 'Bird Song' and a great ending with 'China->Rider- >Playin' In the Band' There are two sources used, the majority is provided by a Betty Cantor board, probably one that was in a group that suffered water damage and mold - the missing reel was probably thrown away.. The missing segment here, starting with 'China Cat' is from a Dick Latvala cassette. The fire marshall was apparently giving the band a hard time and threatening to shut the show down, which accounts for some of the warnings about keeping the aisle clear.. This week on the Deadpod we have the pleasure of listening to the second set from the band's performance on February 17, 1973 in St. Paul Minnesota.. This set begins with a nicely jammed out 'Truckin' followed by 'Row Jimmy' and appropriately, 'Big River'.. Donna follows with a 'You Ain't Woman Enough' but that leads us into the heart of this set, an exquisitely crafted trifecta of 'Here Comes Sunshine' into 'China Cat Sunflower' and 'I Know You Rider'.. you definitely need this one.. the rest of the set is more straight ahead rocking Dead, culminating in a 'Saturday Night' closer and a 'Casey Jones' encore.. watch for Weir's screeching in the 'Not Fade Away' reprise.. :) Grateful Dead St. Paul Auditorium St. Paul, MN 2/17/1973 - Saturday Two Truckin' [12:15] Row Jimmy Big River [4:16] You Ain't Woman Enough Here Comes Sunshine [7:52] > China Cat Sunflower [7:52] > I Know You Rider [4:07#] Around And Around Not Fade Away [4:12] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:#16] > Not Fade Away [3:07] One More Saturday Night Encore Casey Jones [6:16] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022825.mp3 Hope you enjoy the ride!
Today we are talking about the irony that is societal messaging in how women "should" be living and its implication on our pelvic health. Healthcare is a difficult territory for women to navigate, as many of us are left feeling dismissed and unheard, our concerns being chalked up to being a "crazy woman" who just needs to lose weight (BARF). That shit ends here and now. Today, we take back our health and speak up: because no one else is gonna do it for us. The Beyond Kegels mini course is here! The International Olympic Committee has never required men to prove that they are men. But from nude inspections to DNA swabs, women have had to prove their womanhood since the 60s. Bonnie Hagerman says that this is more sinister than creating an “equal” playing field. And: Matt Andrews is taking his students to the 2024 Olympic games in Paris. Later in the show: Tim Passmore explores how nations use the Olympics to improve their reputation both domestically and abroad. Plus: Brett Bebber walks us through a history of the Olympic Games.
Doctor Who isn't a white chick anymore, and some people are mad about it. But other people are mad that they're mad because he's still queer AND Black. Confused yet? Then Russell T Davies continues to make things worse by hyping up the political angle of the revamped version of Doctor Who. ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 About Us: Clownfish TV is an independent, opinionated news and commentary channel that covers Entertainment and Tech from a consumer's point of view. A wonderful set of classic Grateful Dead awaits your listening pleasure on this week's Deadpod as we visit the second set from their performance on February 15, 1973 in Madison Wisconsin. The opening 'Here Comes Sunshine' foretells a special night as the band warms up with some fine renditions of several favorites leading into the real treat - a special 'Dark Star'. This version features some extra-special Phil Lesh contributions which foretell a lovely 'Eyes of the World'. The band paints a beautiful portrait here which then turns into a sweet soulful 'China Doll'. Things ramp up from there with versions of 'Promised Land' and 'Sugaree' before a set closing 'Sugar Magnolia. They return for double encore, of which we only have on this tape the fine 'Uncle John's Band'. Happy Cinco de Mayo! As we roll into the first weekend in May, I wanted to bring out the customary tribute to the Kentucky Derby with a fine 'The Race Is On'. This show does that as well as pays homage to the new, fat, 'Here Comes Sunshine' release from Grateful Dead Productions (Here Comes Sunshine from Dead.net). This show does both, although it takes place in early spring of 1973, rather than in May. This is a huge show - the first set alone has 17 songs that take over one hour and forty minutes of prime Dead. There are too many highlights to mention. As most of you know I love the sound of the band during this period. I invite you to pay attention to Bill's work here - it really sparkles! Of course there is 'The Race Is On', and a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. But I enjoy Donna on 'You Ain't Woman Enough', and just when you think that they must need a break after a fine 'China>Rider' they roll into a 15 minute 'Playin' In The Band' to close the set.. A notice at work about Operation Raleigh in Keyna was the first clue of adventure for Sue, but having to raise £1500 in 1988 was not that easy but ducks came to the rescue. However another advert appeared for 10 novice Artic explorers led by expedition leader David Hempleman Adams, however this time £15,000 had to be raised to secure a place but Sue's belief of "If It's meant to be I will find a way” and taking that first small step towards the goal of trekking to the Magnetic North Pole. Sue's talks of the mental & physical preparation involved including spending time in a meat freezer at -20 degrees & practising pitching tents. We talk about mental and physical fitness and having the mindset of just getting through the next 5 minutes and not thinking about what lies ahead but also reflecting on how far you have already come and what you have acumplished which gives you motivation to continue and the opportunity to change anything before you take the next step. We cover the daily routine of pulling a 50 kilo single file sledge across the ice up to 10 hours a day for 30 days towards their goal and what happened when they reached the Magnetic North Pole. While Jerry's birthday is not until Sunday, I felt that there could be no better way to start off the 'Days Between' than with this humdinger of a show from August 1st, 1973. I realize this is only days after last week's Deadpod fom Watkins Glen, but, hey its one of the few, and probably the greatest of Jerry's Birthday show with the band. Now this version of the events is captured on what I feel is an excellent audience recording. The existing soundboard, especially for this first set, is fairly degraded and I think this audience recording is quite good - I hope you agree. I'm a fan of the 'Sugaree' here, as well as Donna's 'You Ain't Woman Enough' which is a crowd pleaser. The 'Bird Song' that follows is excellent and features two nice jams. The rest of the set is quite well played, with the set ending with an unusually fine 'Casey Jones'. Next week I'll play set 2 - which will include a beautiful soundboard capture of a wonderful Dark Star. Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/1/73 - Wednesday One [59:33] ; The Promised Land [3:02] ; Sugaree [7:51] ; The Race Is On [2:57] ; You Ain't Woman Enough [3:04] ; Bird Song [10:51] ; Mexicali Blues [3:19] ; They Love Each Other [5:07] ; Jack Straw [4:39] ; Stella Blue [7:23] ; Big River [4:38] ; Casey Jones [6:42] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod073021.mp3 This show took place on Garcia's 31st birthday.. August 1 would have marked his 79th! Thank you for listening and for your kind support of the Deadpod.

Does anyone else think (at least once a day)...am I woman enough? There is a definite line between what makes women, women and men, men. Right or wrong there are the stereotypes, societal and cultural conditionings, and so much more. In this episode we battle the age old question "can a woman have/be/do it all?". Is it possible or an ever elusive pursuit? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/boardingpassug/support

Kathleen opens the show drinking a Black Cherry White Claw and providing listeners with an update on the success of her March Madness bracket in the Madigan Family pool. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN’S QUEEN’S COURT: In an update on her Queens, Kathleen tells the Termites that Dolly Parton has her own ice cream flavor called Strawberry Pretzel Pie, which will be available from Jeni’s Ice Cream. Tanya Tucker has released a duet of “You Ain’t Woman Enough” on Loretta Lynn’s 2021 release of “Still Woman Enough,” and Kathleen wishes Queen Chaka a very happy belated birthday which was March 23rd. “BAD GOOD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Hidden Valley Ranch Garlic Parmesan Cheese Dip with a Ritz cracker, which she loves, as she does her next snack: Cheez-It Loaded White Cheddar Popcorn. Then in the spirit of March Madness, as she has watched (and bet on) every game, Kathleen picks up the new Wendy’s Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit as Charles Barkley and Greg Gumbel mention on CBS broadcasts that it is the official breakfast of the tournament. Kathleen had such strong feelings regarding the sandwich that she posted a separate commentary video on YouTube. CHINA + NEPAL AGREE TO HEIGHT OF EVEREST: As a follow up to Episode 33’s Everest story, Kathleen reads an article announcing that after years of dispute, China and Nepal have agreed that Everest’s official height is 29,032 feet. NEW MH370 DETAILS CLAIM A COVER-UP: As her Termites know, Kathleen has a long-going commitment to finding out what happened to the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 as detailed in her bit “Malaysian Flt 370.” When the plane crossed over into Vietnamese airspace, the co-pilot didn’t engage their air traffic control and an assumption lingers that all tracking devices had been disabled so that it could vanish. Kathleen is thrilled to read the news that Florence de Changy is a Far-Eastern correspondent who covered the case in detail, is releasing a new book alluding to a cover-up by the authorities. PRINCE HARRY’S NEW JOBS: Kathleen follows up on her Episode 31 update on the ongoings of Harry & Meghan in their new life in the US. Kathleen has never been a fan of the British Royal Family and is amused at the drama surrounding the couple’s departure from royal life. She reads the latest press advising that Harry has joined Silicon Valley startup BetterUp as their chief impact officer (which Kathleen calls a made-up title,) and he has also joined Aspen Institute’s new Commission on Information Disorder (which Kathleen feels as though he is COMPLETELY unqualified to formally manage.)THE QUEEN OF SOUL: Kathleen LOVES soul music, and she’s a massive fan of Aretha Franklin’s recordings. She’s read 3 biographies discussing Aretha’s life, and after watching Nat Geo’s “Genius: Aretha” series Kathleen has headed to Muscle Shoals, AL to play golf and tour FAME Recording Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. She intends to enjoy some sunshine, a few beers, and gather as much information as she can about some of her favorite iconic singers immersing themselves in the Muscle Shoals Sound. POOP IN A BOX: Kathleen tells listeners about another Theranos-like startup company that has been charged in a $60M fraud scheme. Jessica Richman, who founded uBiome was indicted on multiple federal conspiracy charges last week. uBiome’s direct-to-consumer service called “Gut Explorer” required customers to submit fecal samples to be analyzed in a lab to detect diseases such as colon cancer. As the daughter of a lawyer, Kathleen laughs out loud at ANY thoughts of requesting that she “mail her shit in a box.”USVI BOAT MURDER: Kathleen reviews an investigation in the US Virgin Islands involving the disappearance of British woman Sarm Heslop from her American boyfriend's boat. Heslop vanished without a trace on March 7 after she and Ryan Bane had drinks in Frank's Bay, St. John. Bane told investigators they had returned to his catamaran that night and he awoke in the early hours to find his girlfriend gone. Being an avid fan of the ID Channel, Kathleen goes into her own thoughts on what happened that night ☺VAN GOUGH PAINTING EMERGES FROM HIDING: Kathleen can’t believe an article that she shares announcing that the Vincent Van Gogh painting “A Street Scene In Montmartre,” which has been owned by a French family since it was created in 1887, has been released for auction. SAN DIEGO MYSTERY BOOMS: Kathleen discusses the “skyquakes” that have been heard in the San Diego area over the past few months. The sound lights up social media and resembles the explosion of a heavy piece of artillery that can be accounted for by none of the known laws of nature. Many locals mistake the noise for an earthquake, but the US Geological Survey said seismic-activity sensors recorded nothing. Kathleen asks Termites based in that area to share their thoughts on what they feel is causing the noise. TOXIC POSITIVITY: Kathleen is amused by but also has a lack of trust in people who are always hyper-positive. She’s THRILLED to read an article from a leading psychologist taking the opinion that while over-indulgent positivity it is well-intentioned, toxic positivity suppresses emotions which can then lead to stronger negative emotions such as anxiety and depression. The doc defines Toxic positivity as the belief that no matter how dire or difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset which makes Kathleen’s head explode as she pours another beer and calls her sister to catch up on family gossip. LONG-LOST 1634 SETTLEMENT FOUND: Kathleen is excited to share with Termites that St. Mary’s City has been discovered in Maryland after 90 years of research. The colony was settled in 1634 by Catholics fleeing England after being. Accused of starting the Great London Fire of 1666. Kathleen applauds the endeavors of the archaeologists, and she’s amused at how jealous her mom and Jeff Foxworthy will be to hear that ancient arrowheads were found (as both are adamant arrowhead collectors.) WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching the new HBO documentary “Tina” about Tina Turner, and also “Genius: Aretha” which is a Discovery Channel original available on DiscoveryGO and Hulu.

It's a long way from San Antonio to Nashville, 937 miles to be exact. However, that journey can last a lifetime when you are traveling by way of the music business. It's a journey that my guest and dear friend, began and accomplished, joyfully arriving in the music capital of the world and recently appearing on the greatest stage in country music, The Grand Ole Opry! Fasten your seat belt, you're about to hear the inspiring story of manifestation and amazing talent to be found in one…Stephanie Urbina Jones. In this special one-on-one chat, Sonny picks up on a conversation he had with Stephanie several years ago when she was in the beginning stages of her career. You'll be inspired by her "secret" to success in the music business or anything you dream of. About Stephanie Urbina Jones When Stephanie Urbina Jones starts to unwind the story of how her new album, Tularosa, came to life, it's hard to stop repeating, “Wow. Really?” Her narrative has so many twists and turns, so many meant-to-be moments that can only be described as karmic, it sounds like a fairytale. But then, so does her entire career. We're talking about a woman who moved from Austin to Nashville to work with the Texas Tornados' management agency, landed a songwriting deal almost on a whim, had one of her first efforts become the title track of a Lorrie Morgan album, then watched a competitor on TV's The Voice win season seven and score a No. 1 Billboard country chart debut with a song she co-wrote — a song Blake Shelton gave him after sitting on it for 15 years. There's more, but first, a bit about the album. An inspired marriage of country classics with mariachi rhythms, Tularosa (Sept. 28, 2018) honors both her personal musical icons — no-last-name-needed legends including Loretta, Dolly, Patsy, Willie, Merle, Hank, Kris, Johnny and June — and the Mexican heritage that feeds her sound. But these long-overdue arrangements also reveal something else: the connections between “white” country music and the Hispanic influences that pervade it. Texan Urbina Jones, born in San Antonio and raised mostly in Fredericksburg, began melding those influences when she started singing “country jazz” at Austin's Elephant Room, where she'd taken a booking job after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. Eventually, she segued into Latin-rooted Americana, also described as “Texicana country folk-rock” or, in her late grandmother's words, “country music with chili peppers.” Even though her sure, sinuous voice was made to sing these songs in these arrangements, the plan to do so didn't form until spring of 2016, when Urbina Jones performed a gig in New Mexico with guitarist Patterson Barrett. Deciding she wanted to spice up her set, she asked Facebook friends for a percussionist connection and was put in touch with Sound Production of Tularosa, a local recording studio. The owner promised to hook her up with someone, but only if she'd visit his studio after her show. Reluctantly, she agreed, then contacted the player. He asked if he could bring his dad, an old-school mariachi. She was thrilled. “I feel 5 years old when I hear mariachis. They're a direct source to joy for me,” says Urbina Jones, whose most profound early-childhood memories include listening to players at Sunday barbecues hosted by her grandmother, a notary public who often aided Mexican immigrants. (She's even got a song about it — “Mariachis Make Me Cry,” which earned her a finalist spot in the 2002 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition.) That night, they performed several country favorites with a mariachi twist. Afterward, a concertgoer introduced himself, said she needed to record with mariachis, and offered to finance an album using an inheritance from his recently deceased mother. “He felt it was important music to make to bridge the cultures and heal the divides between so many people's hearts,” she explains. That was music to her ears, until she heard the amount: $3,500 — a fraction of what she knew it would cost. But she also knew she had to say yes. Then she went to see the studio, not expecting much. “I'm not even thinking about recording anything there,” she recounts, “and then I get there and I get that feeling, that knowing that I know. Like, ‘Oh, this is where we're supposed to do it.'” She'd already written an album about her great-grandfather, Manuel Urbina, who went to the Vatican to study for the priesthood but ended up crossing the border to become San Antonio's first Mexican Baptist minister. She didn't want to record that in unfamiliar surroundings, however. She and Barrett headed back to Nashville, promising to return; to do what, they had no idea. But she knew the powerful magic already at work would somehow guide them. On their way home, they visited friends in Lubbock. A guitar soon got passed around. “Patterson started playing ‘Walking After Midnight' as a Latin cumbia,” Urbina Jones recalls. She used to put a swing on it in her Elephant Room days, so she jumped right in. “It was so much fun, we spent the rest of the night trying out songs like Hank Williams' ‘Cold Cold Heart' as a mariachi waltz and Loretta Lynn's ‘You Ain't Woman Enough' as a Mexican polka. In that living room, the inspiration for the album came together.” Other elements quickly fell into place. Radio station La Luz (the Light) covered hotel rooms; friends helped with expenses and put them up en route; the studio owner and mariachis, from Tularosa and El Paso, offered price breaks; and players or their families stuffed everyone with homemade pozole or tacos each day. “The moment we started playing, we knew we were onto something,” she says. “It was hugely collaborative and spontaneous — and fresh, alive and fun. We made music that translates culture, heart and soul — joining two worlds that have so much in common to celebrate.” She'd always wanted to record the Harlan Howard-Buck Owns tune, “I've Got a Tiger by the Tail,” an Elephant Room staple, and the Lynn Anderson hit “Rose Garden.” And Haggard's “Silver Wings” was her parents' favorite song. Once she'd committed to doing a covers album, she had to include Nelson, represented by “Seven Spanish Angels,” and her clever, biting take on the Tom T. Hall-penned Jeannie C. Riley hit, “Harper Valley P.T.A.,” along with Parton's “Jolene.” “Having been cheated on, I have lived the desperation of that song,” she says. “When we gave it this new feel, it came alive and felt even more like a telenovela — and more true to song's intention.” The album opens with her sassy version of “Walking After Midnight”; it ends with a Texas Tornados' connection: her Tex-Mex-plus-strings rendition of “Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone.” But “Ring of Fire” has an even more direct connection: Tornados co-founder Augie Meyers duets with her on Spanish and English versions (“Jolene” also appears in both languages). Tularosa also features Mavericks accordionist Michael Guerra on the upbeat “Tiger.” As important as it was for Urbina Jones to honor her beloved influences, she wanted to do the same for the musical genre she calls “classic Mexico.” The album exhibits several mariachi styles, including corrido/polka, huapango, ranchera, cumbia, marcha, bolero and son. She credits producer Barrett (aka “El Gringo Danger”) with handling much of the arranging; she had intended to produce it herself, but fell ill while recording. “We were all surprised that a gringo could write the mariachi string and trumpet parts so authentically,” she jokes, quickly adding that, after 40 years of music-making in South Texas, “I guess it's just in him.” Ironically, Hispanic culture was not “just in” Urbina Jones. Her gringa mother and Mexican-American father split when she was young, and she didn't reconnect with her dad and his family, including her beloved grandmother — her abuelita — till after high school. Urbina Jones was already living in Nashville when she was summoned to San Antonio; her abuelita was dying. Before she passed, she said in Spanglish to Stephanie, whom she called mija (my little girl), “You were born to be a mensaje (messenger); la puente (a bridge), sharing the beauty of our culture with the world through your music.” Urbina Jones didn't even know that culture, but her grandmother insisted she would find a way. So she went to Mexico to learn, boarding with a family in a small San Miguel house during her three months at a foreign-language institute. She arrived an “entitled American”; she left enraptured by the culture — and committed to telling its story in song. “I just fell in love with the people, with the way of life,” she says. “I would have stayed there forever. But I had a mission at that point. I understood what my grandmother wanted me to translate: what's missing is the beauty, the culture, the love, the joy, the passion, the kindness, the compassion that lives in the heart of Mexico.” She took her great-grandfather's name as her middle name, remortgaged her house (for the first of three times) and made her first “real” album, 2002's Stephanie Urbina Jones. Since then, she's not only learned to trust fate, she's learned to embrace where it takes her — from performances in 14 countries, including some of the world's most prestigious festivals (among them Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Fest and Japan's Country Gold) to duetting with Nelson at a Fourth of July Picnic and singing with Vince Gill & the Time Jumpers. Her own version of “Shakin' Things Up” also made her the first independent female artist to hit No. 1 on the Texas Music Chart. “Everyone loves passion. Everyone loves heart,” Urbina Jones explains. Since she declared her mission to celebrate Hispanic culture in song, she's never wavered from that goal, even though she's become a shamanic minister and Toltec teacher as well. “I trust it now,” she says of her own passion. “I trust when I know that I know, to follow that.” Listeners should do the same; once they hear Tularosa, they'll know what she knows: These cultures are already united, and this album is indeed meant to be. True to form, the magic continues. Just days before the official release of Tularosa, the stars aligned again when Jones and her band of mariachi were invited to perform with The Time Jumpers. The performance lit up the room and was captured on video. That video went viral and soon garnered a dream-come-true invitation to perform on the Grand Ole Opry, where they received a standing ovation for their classic country-meets-mariachi history-making performance.
This week on The Richard Crouse Show: Woman Enough: How a Boy Became a Woman and Changed the World of Sport is the account of a human rights battle with global repercussions for the world of sport; it's a challenge to rethink fixed ideas about gender; and it's the extraordinary story of a boy who was rejected for who he wasn't, and who fought back until she found out who she is. Multi-Grammy award winner Loretta Lynn is an American music legend. The Kentucky native married as a young teenager, moved to Washington State, and had four children by age 20. She poured her energies into life as a homemaker before teaching herself to play guitar and write songs. Her life experiences informed her writing style, which gave voice to the concerns of everyday working class women. She landed a record contract with a regional label and tirelessly promoted her first single, “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl,” to radio stations across the country. The record climbed to #14 on the Billboard country chart, leading to a move to Nashville. After appearing on the Grand Ole Opry and signing a songwriting deal with the Wilburn Brothers’ publishing company she was recruited to Decca Records by legendary producer Owen Bradley. Loretta went on to place more than 75 singles on the Billboard country chart as either a solo artist or as a duet partner with Ernest Tubb or Conway Twitty. More than 50 of those singles hit the Top 10, including 15 #1 hits. Many of her classic songs were self-penned, including “Dear Uncle Sam,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind),” “Fist City,” “Your Squaw Is on the Warpath,” “Rated X,” “The Pill,” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” which NPR named one of the “100 Most Significant Songs of the Century.” She has received a combined 21 awards from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, including the ACM’s Artist of the Decade Award in 1979, the Pioneer Award in 1994, and the Crystal Milestone Award in 2014. She became the first female to win CMA Entertainer of the Year honors in 1972 and became the first female ACM Entertainer of the Year in 1975. She was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983, the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008. She received Kennedy Center Honors in 2003, earned the prestigious BMI Icon award in 2004, took home a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. She has sold more than 45 million records worldwide, was the first woman in country music to receive a certified Gold album, and has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for nearly 55 years.

Where can our listeners find your information online? What is one quote or saying that you live by or that inspires you in times of adversity? Highlights Asa Leveaux is the founder of Genius Academy; he created the Genius Prescription System, which is a seven step system for aspiring entrepreneurs to make their first USD $10,000.00 in business. And though Genius Academy is the Chief Strategy and Revenue Officer of the Leveaux Group and best selling author, those accolades and achievements just didn’t embody who he was all the time. There was a time that none of those things existed but what did exist was a level of frustration with himself, a level of frustration with no one allowing his cash register to ring as he became an entrepreneur, frustration with his family of not giving him the support that he thought he needed from them, even the frustration of not being able to provide for his little boy who he calls his “son” and his “sun”. Even though he was on state assistance for food, he still allowed him to go to school to second grade without a lunch and that was the last time he allowed himself to do that, he understood that he needed to take action to make that no longer a reality. Asa Leveaux shared that some of the founding principles that have contributed to his success for him is one, understanding that your passion is your problem. What he means by that is we all have a passion, it may be a non-profit which helps battered women, it may be to make sure that children can read in our communities, it may be that we love to make clothes and love fashion and that’s our passion or even fixing cars is something that we know that we are born to do but whatever that passion may be for you, realizing that no one else in the world was given the passion that you have, the way you have it, so because of that don’t insist that support from friends or family should be as high as yours because it’s not their passion, it’s your passion. Don’t create this unreal contract between them as though they need to support you in a way that you support yourself because they have their own passion to work with. That has been the biggest step for him. Asa stated that in his everyday activity as a customer he has come to a point in his life that he doesn’t create expectations for people, so when he enters a store or an atmosphere where he is about to make a transaction, he does his best to enter that space not expecting anyone to be nice to him but stated that’s an internal work he had to do with him being himself. He stated that if he was the person that is over that transactional environment or that retail store, then he is creating that expectation for those individuals that are providing customer service on his behalf to do the necessary things and making sure that those expectations are written down and are clear. So as a customer, doing his best to be mindful and conscious and loving of other people where they are, that’s how he operates. As far as a business person that may have individuals that is responsible for customer service in his organization, that expectation looks like a PWS (Priority Award Statement) and SOP’s as in you will treat the customer this way and being very specific about that to ensure that the customer experience is a good one. Asa Leveaux shared that some things that he ensures that he tells them is that your result statement needs to be visible, clear and consistent. So often individuals are not clear about what they provide for people. If you are in the health care profession and you ensure that people are resilient, that by itself is not enough, he needs to understand that when he exchanges value for value which may look like money for your time, he needs to know what the results are so that he can be very clear of what to expect from you and the result statement has to be there and if the results statement is not there, now he’s a confused buyer and your sales conversation will be longer and harder because you did not set it in stone what it is that you do and how you do it and who you do that for. For instance, he started this interview by stating his name, stated the he ensures aspiring entrepreneurs make their first USD $10,000.00 as a result of creating a Genius Prescription System, he knows who he is meant to serve, he knows how he’s going to serve them and result that they are aiming for, if you don’t have those components, you are wasting your time and theirs. Asa shared that the most recent book that he wrote was a book called “I am Woman Enough: 365 Affirmations for Women”. When he mentions that he wrote that book, he initially gets hit with flack and he understands that because his response to their request of him creating that book was that he was not going to work it, he was complete in his experience of writing books that were affirmation based at that time but women kept asking him for the book. His thing was that he is a man, he is void of ovaries, so that doesn’t make him an expert on being a woman and he was very clear on that. He saw all of the strife that women and men have sent to Steve Harvey, T.D Jakes for writing books catered to women, he didn’t want to be a part of that, he didn’t sign up for that but when a woman stopped him in Texas and said “If you don’t write the book, who will?” He had nothing to come back with, he had no rebuttal and so because of that, he wrote the book, however he had 22 other women to help him in that endeavor. Asa stated that I am Woman Enough book lead him to write his third book called “I am Man Enough: 365 Affirmation for Men” and the reason he wrote that because men sometimes, more often than not, get the bad end of the stick as far as blaming the world, so men are responsible for so much bad to the point that they are not seeing anyone taking a role their empowerment, just because you are the majority in certain spaces does not mean you do not need empowerment, just because you have a preconceived notion of power. That is the reason he wrote that book. There was a time when he was involved with someone in a relationship with someone and they were coming up to their one year anniversary and he wanted to give her something from the heart, not because he was being cheap but because that’s something she valued and it’s important to understand what your partner values, just because the last person liked flowers doesn’t meant the new person likes flowers. He was writing out all the reasons why he loved her and he was placing them in a box to look like a treasure chest and people were passing his office and seeing the project and said I should write a book about that and I said “What do you want me to do? Make all these reasons for her and give it to every woman?” They said exactly and that’s what he did. He created a workbook for couples called “365 Erotic Reasons Why I Love You” He is meeting a need, when your customer is saying they have a potential need; meet the need, that’s called research and development. The first book he created was based on his desire to hire more people that look like him, he was 23 years old with three different businesses and Oklahoma wanted to hire more black people and all of the black people that were showing up to him were usually very young, even younger than him and they didn’t have the necessary skills not just to get in his door but to get in any door. When he talked about this to other entrepreneurs in his community, they were experiencing the same thing. So he wrote a book to help them, the book is entitled “Why I Won’t Hire Black People: Racial Profiling for a Reason”. He stated that when you are writing books, it’s important to research your genre of book, he understood and was very specific, he was going for African Americans in the workplace and he started to look at books that were already doing that so he was reading books like “Black Faces in White Places” or “What It’s Like To Be Me” or “To Be Black In Corporate America.” “What could I do to ensure that people would react, create an emotion in people that would allow them to take action?” In his experience, the real true emotions that will …. are sexual and anger. When you are angry about a book or the content or even the person who wrote it, people tend to take more actions by obtaining more evidence of why they hate the person or why they hate the book, which is why he created it. Another thing he wanted to show them subconsciously is that a lot of times he is hit with “I shouldn’t be judged by what I look like if I am trying to be hired as a black person” and he would say “you are right, however, you are judging my book by its cover by not wanting you to be judged by yours”. It is a lesson within itself. The books are available on Amazon and his website – www.asaleveaux.com Asa Leveaux stated that every day he doesn’t feel like being motivated and sometimes it comes at 7:00 am in the morning and sometimes it doesn’t come until 11:07 pm at night. Asa stated that even with entrepreneurs, sometimes we don’t answer the phone until noon because we haven’t got the motivation yet, sometimes we quit the business three times before noon because things become difficult and we don’t see a way out but in those moments and in those days that he does have a hold on motivation, how it comes is him caring about the individuals who are waiting for him to show up. He knows that he was called for people that are choking on frustration and if he is too concerned about what’s happening or not happening with himself rather than what they are going through, he will remain unmotivated. Asa shared that if you are an online entrepreneur, the first thing he will want you to consider is your domain name. He stated that causes him a high level of anger when he sees a domain name that he knows is not converting anyone. For instance, if you have a book and you are saying that your book is available on Amazon and he asks where can he get it and you say go to Amazon and he asks what is the name of your book and you tell him but he doesn’t see it at all. How does he get there and you tell him that he needs to put in a search for your Amazon, he’s going to be angry, if you tell him to Amazon.com/selfhelp/Jamaica/yourname. He’s going to be angry again. It would be easier to go to a company such as GoDaddy.com and get a domain for your book and create something called a vanity URL which is just you’re pointing where your product is to the point that you want to bring them to. The Woman Enough book that he mentioned earlier, instead of saying go to Amazon and look for Asa Leveaux or look for Woman Enough book, he said go to WomanEnoughBook.com or ManEnoughBook.com and that just takes you to where he wants you to go. Asa stated that you should always direct people where you want them to go and make it easy for them. Yanique mentioned that she did an interview with Jay Baer Author of “Hug Your Haters” and he said from research, one of the number one things that customers want is speed. The quicker and easier customers can access you online the better because nobody has time to be digging and going through different pages just to find one thing. Asa mentioned that also with name, everybody’s name does not convert well in a podcast or any other auditory format. For instance, his name is Asa Leveaux, some people don’t know how to spell his last name, Asa is easy but why would he make that his potential customers’ problem of finding that out. Even though he has www.asaleveaux.com, he also has a www.lifewithasa.com. So he rarely says go to asaleveaux.com on auditory format but he will say it on a written but to say it out loud, he would usually say go to lifewithasa.com and they all point to the same website. Asa Leveaux shared that he compartmentalizes his life, meaning when it’s time for business, it’s business and when it’s not, it’s not. So for him, his phone is real so he doesn’t want to be contacted at 11:00 pm at night from anyone unless something is happening or they are going out for drinks. There’s a company call Grasshopper that allows you to receive incoming calls and make outgoing calls through their app, he makes all his calls through the grasshopper app and the thing about it is when he calls, his business number shows up, so if they want to call him back, that’s the number they call him back on. Asa shared that when he started his entrepreneurial journey the book that gave him the fire he wanted was a book called “Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!” by Robert T. Kiyosaki and he read that book more times than not and was totally enthralled by it, he says that whenever he sees it, like in a waiting room or someone pulls it out, he’ll read it again just because he likes it that much. Asa also stated that another book that made on impact was a book called “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S. Clason, which he really loves. The last one would be “The 10X Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure” by Grant Cardone. If you want to take responsibility for everything you have in your life, you need to read that book because everything that you could be doing could be 10 times that. Asa shared that something he did this morning, he was thinking about the customer experience, as he was getting ready for this interview, he started thinking about what it means to “woo your customer” because you want to them to be wooed, you don’t just get married to them all of a sudden, there’s a wooing process that needs to happen. How can he woo them quicker, sooner, faster? Genius Academy has a main platform called the Entrepreneurial Playbook and the Playbook gives you the different plays for your entrepreneurial journey, it’s a monthly subscription. He then thought what can he do to woo his customers? He then created the opportunity for anyone to take advantage of experiencing that for 30 days for USD $1.00. There’s a link for Genius Academy at lifewithasa.com or they can go to www.geniusacademy.co and look for the Entrepreneur Playbook and he also listed the coupon code. Asa stated that the Entrepreneurial Playbook has different course within it that they get to have access to so for instance, if you want to know how to publish your book, it’s there. If you want to sell your book on Amazon, it’s there and if want to sell period, it’s there. Marketing, how to operate your business, financing and speaking, it’s all there. There are eight courses that you get in the Playbook and you have access to all of them. Asa shared that for him it’s two fold. He stated that if he has people that are working for him, he will ensure that one of his (KPI’s) Key Performance Indicators is that they show up motivated because he may be out putting out a fire (figuratively or literally) and he doesn’t have the capacity in that moment to motivate the person that is handling his customers. However, when they get hired on, they will sign the agreement that these are your Key Performance Indicators and if you do not show up well in these specific ways that are measureable and quantifiable, meaning that you have a positive customer comment cards and you can resolve or de-escalate issues, then you will no longer be an asset. Ensuring that motivation is embedded within the things that are measured to keep someone on the team. The next thing is from a leadership point of view because as a leader, you are responsible for everything that does and does not happen in that business. Because of that you just let people know that you care about them, not necessarily the customer but the person who is caring for the customer because that’s the issue a lot of people don’t get. When you are the manager or even business owner and you keep saying the customer is always right, what are you then saying is that you have no value as the employee. One of the things he learned from Richard Branson is that he doesn’t say, “the customers are always right”, he says, “I value my employees” who are then feeling valued now can give value. If you have a workforce that is happy, they can then give that happiness to someone else but if they are depleted, they have nothing to give. Asa says listeners can find him on: www.lifewithasa.com www.asaleveaux.com Asa Leveaux Facebook Asa Leveaux Twitter Asa Leveaux LinkedIn Asa Leveaux Pinterest Genius Academy Facebook Genius Prescription System Asa stated a quote that helps him by Albert Einstein “If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.” He uses that to ensure that he is clear whenever he is talking. He understands that your ego can be wrapped into using words when you are talking about the problems of life, you could talk about the vicissitudes of life but he would rather not go that route because his main goal is not for anyone to see the intelligence but he would rather you understand so that you can spend the money. If you are not clear on what he is talking about, you are confused by it, which actually means someone who doesn’t buy. So if he can’t explain to a six year old and that’s with anything, his business plan, how he’s going to talk to his customers, how he’s pitching a new product or service, if they don’t get it, he needs to go back to the drawing board and start over. He stated that he used his son for awhile but he is now 10 years old so he asks his nieces and nephews if it make sense to them and if they can tell it you as far as what it is that you do, then you are clear now.
