3 Things Business Owners Don't Know That Can Hurt Them is covered in this podio, along with the following subjects: - What is the Corporate Transparency Act - How does it impact small business owners? - Why Small Businesses Must Prioritize Compliance and Cybersecurity *************************************** Many business owners may not be aware of the Corporate Transparency Act and its potential impact on small businesses. This act aims to combat money laundering and terrorism financing by requiring certain small businesses to report their beneficial ownership information to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Small business owners must understand how this legislation affects them to ensure compliance and avoid any penalties. I'll be talking with Paul Paray about 3 Things Business Owners Don't Know That Can Hurt Them. Paul has a diverse legal and business background that includes, creating resilient security and privacy compliance programs – including one for an auto insurer; successfully prosecuting intellectual property portfolios; successfully litigating federal and state commercial disputes around the country, and helping small and mid-sized business owners navigate numerous risk management issues. To that end, he has been invited to speak at leading conferences to discuss risk management, including RSA, IAPP, RIMS and PLUS, and has been interviewed regarding risk management by the National Law Journal, Business Insurance, CFO Magazine, ComputerWorld, SC Magazine, Security Management, The Financial Post, The Hartford Business Journal, The Newark Star-Ledger, New Jersey Law Journal, and The New York Times. We travel to the Big Apple and beyond as New York Post sports columnist Mike Vaccaro shares tales from 35 years of living his childhood dream job. Isiah Thomas depicted in a tabloid clown suit. John Calipari's colorful language in a full rant. A postseason run by the Yankees in the wake of 9/11. Badminton (yes, badminton) at the Olympics. Fifty-nine hockey columns in 61 days. Six newspapers on the daily beat of Arkansas sports. That time he was fired. Vac recounts all this and more. He also discusses returning to work since his left leg needed to be amputated below the knee in 2022 because of health issues. Welcome back Vac. Vaccaro has been the lead sports columnist for the New York Post since 2002, and he has been named New York Sportswriter of the Year four times by the National Sports Media Association. He has covered the Olympics, World Cup soccer, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, World Series, Stanley Cup playoffs, Final Four and college football championship games numerous times. Vac not only writes about local, national, and international sports, he also writes a Sunday column called “Open Mike.”   The Associated Press Sports Editors, the New York State Publishers Association, the New York Press Club, and the Poynter Institute are among those that have awarded Vaccaro more than 100 journalism honors during his career, which began in 1989 at the Olean (N.Y) Times Herald. He became the sports editor of the Northwest Arkansas Times in 1991, then wrote sports columns for the Middletown (NY) Times Herald-Record, Kansas City Star, and Newark Star-Ledger before joining the New York Post in November 2002.   Vaccaro is the author of three books: “Emperors and Idiots” (about the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry); “1941 – The Greatest Year in Sports”; and “The First Fall Classic” (about the 1912 World Series).   A native of West Hempstead, N.Y., Vaccaro graduated in 1989 from St. Bonaventure University, where his name was added to the Jandoli School Wall of Distinguished Graduates in 2022.   You can read Vaccaro's columns for the New York Post at this link: https://nypost.com/author/mike-vaccaro/  Here is Vac's column about how past personal struggles helped make 2023 a glorious year: https://nypost.com/2023/12/23/sports/past-personal-struggles-helped-make-2023-a-glorious-year/  @MikeVacc Learn more about your ad choices. It's a stark contrast from when Shroff was watching sports and saw the field dominated by white men. Growing up, Shroff was a sports-crazed kid, an avid baseball player, rabid collector of sports trading cards and someone who read the Newark Star-Ledger sports section cover-to-cover. He always wanted to be a sports broadcaster, and thanks to parents who supported his dreams, Shroff has realized those childhood dreams. Shroff is entering his second season calling Carolina Panthers games on the team's network of radio stations, and he's also handled play-by-play duties for ESPN's coverage of college football, college basketball, men's lacrosse and baseball. Shroff discusses his path to the NFL, how he cultivated his voice as a broadcaster, why he feels future sportscasters should embrace reading and learning history to help hone their on-air skills, and how he's forever thankful that his immigrant parents encouraged him to pursue his sportscasting dreams.

Join our conversation on how live theater can be “modernized” and used to challenge the negative contemporary cultural side effects like extremism and alienation with Award-Winning Playwright, Jack Canfora. For centuries people have found inspiration, beauty, and expression in live theater. The Ancient Greeks were the first to wade into the waters of this novel art form, using dance, song, and choral chants to play out their mythic past. Today, many see live theater as a dying art as multimedia storytelling modalities, like streaming TV, film, and the internet, hold a monopoly on our attention. In the face of this threatening final nail in the coffin, Jack is dedicated to presenting both new and underproduced plays via the internet, in ways that maintain the essential dramatic spirit while using the theatrical experience to explore the historical, cultural, and psychological forces shaping life in America and beyond in the 21st Century. He shares on Unlocking Your World of Creativity how to reshape our storytelling imagination to better understand the beauty and potential this ancient art form still holds. Years ago, when I first resigned myself to working in the  "Real World" in order to support my family, I used to think that getting an MFA in Directing had been a waste of time and money on my part.  Because after all, besides directing in High Schools, Middle Schools and Community Theatre groups, I wasn't realy doing what I was trained to do.  And then as I got older, I kept thinking of Shakespeare's wonderful line "all the world's a stage and we are merely players in it" and that made me come to the conclusion, that it hadn't been a waste of time at all.  It was really one of the best ways to prepare FOR life.  Where else but in the  theatre, the other Fine Arts, and Philosophy does one have the opportunity to  explore the mysteries and tragedies of life,  the human condition, and our existential battle to find meaning in the pain and suffering of this world as well as its  joys and inspirations?  Theatre reveals some of the "pathways" to that meaning and  purpose.  The drive that all of us pursue and long to find, except, perhaps, the most cynical and bitter (Which is in itself a tragedy that dramatic literature explores often).  My long talk with Jack Canfora was such a "roadmap", and his plays are as well.  (Read them - a couple are even available on Amazon) In short . . . it was a joy and personally, one of my favorite interviews to date.  After listening to it, I hope this wrap up to that conversation will leave you wanting to hear more from him.  I know I look forward to our next talk. And that's by the design of the Republicans who run those states— that's what they want people to be talking about because that fires up their base. What has gotten very little attention is just how damaging Republican leadership in those states has been for a longer period of time and across a much broader range of issues.William Kleinknecht, author of States of Neglect: How Red-State Leaders Have Failed Their Citizens and Undermined AmericaI found that when I went to where the poorest people were— and the people who were suffering from environmental degradation or poor healthcare— I think they got it. I think it's a different segment of their population that is the MAGA Republicans. And I didn't spend as much time around them because I was looking for where the damage was.William Kleinknecht, author of States of Neglect: How Red-State Leaders Have Failed Their Citizens and Undermined AmericaOliver Hall is a public interest attorney in Washington, DC. He is founder of and legal counsel to the Center for Competitive Democracy, which aims to strengthen American democracy by increasing electoral competition. The fact is, in our increasingly corporatized world where transactions are automated, contracts are one-sided (contracts that corporations create with so much fine print you couldn't possibly read it all, and ostensibly require you to sign away your rights), I think people get intimidated. Or they assume that they don't have the right to pursue a claim in small claims court. And the fact is they do have that right. It can be done. And there's no reason more people shouldn't do it, especially given the level and pervasiveness of corporate abuses, just in terms of everyday normal transactions that we all engage in.Oliver Hall on Small Claims CourtI've been listening to Elon Musk speak out against government subsidies of corporations over the months— and talking about himself as a great capitalist entrepreneur— when, in reality, he takes all kinds of corporate welfare… Anytime he opens up a plant or starts a company like Starlink, he demands all kinds of subsidies, handouts, giveaways, grants, and especially a tax referral or tax holidays or tax breaks.Ralph Nader on his Twitter exchange with Elon Musk Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

When I get to talk with someone like Jack Canfora, whom I've never met before, never known of before (sorry Jack), and come away from it feeling exhilerated, uplifted and anticipating this is (hopefully) just the first of many conversations, that is truly a special thing.  From my perspective Jack and I "hit it off".  Two theatre guys celebrating what the theatre does best.  Exploring the mysteries of life,  and the human condition through literature and storytelling.  In short . . . it was a joy and personally, one of my favorite interviews to date.  After listening to it, I hope it will be one of your as well.John Lawrence "Jack" Canfora is an Award-Winning American playwright, actor, musician and teacher. JJ opens giving some credit to Aaron Boone (shockingly) after the Yankees win in Minnesota before reacting to the awkward Gerrit Cole soundbite where he was asked about using “Spider Tack” (1:47). Then, he breaks down the disappointing Mets loss in Baltimore (9:59) and explains why the Nets-Bucks series is over (12:15). Next, JJ does a “State of the Yankees” with Bob Klapisch of the Newark Star-Ledger on all their problems and why he still thinks they get in the playoffs (19:54). He then reacts to some listener voicemails (40:12) before chatting with Pitt associate head basketball coach Tim O'Toole about his time with Coach K and his reaction to his retirement from Duke at the end of next year (54:29). And finally, he closes it out by talking to his sister, Caroline Jastremski, who was the Yankee fan that went viral over the weekend after video showed her arguing with some young Red Sox fans (1:24:34)! Jerry Izenberg might not be a recognizable name to most sport’s fans, but it’s one that will be eternally remembered when it comes to all sports. You see, Jerry Izenberg is one of the greatest writers to ever put pen to paper when it comes to covering the games we love to watch. Jerry spent time at several newspapers, most notably though, he spent most of his career writing for a paper that so few know (unless you live in or near New Jersey), the Newark Star-Ledger. Jerry also wrote, produced and directed sport’s specials and documentaries and authored several books including: “Once There Were Giants” … “The Greatest Game Ever Played” … “No Medals for Trying” … “Rozelle: A Biography”. While Jerry might not be as well-known as some of his contemporaries who wrote for larger newspapers, guys like Dave Anderson, Red Smith, Jim Murray, Jimmy Cannon, Shirley Povich or Frank Deford, doesn’t mean he was every bit as good – or better. So many couldn’t wait to get a copy of the paper every morning to read Jerry. But Jerry was even more! He found stories where no one dared to go before him. To make a stand and cover issues that others thought had no business being in the sport’s pages; and his work to raise money through sport’s endeavors has gone unnoticed by so many. Well, writer and author Ed Odeven recently sat down with Jerry and many of his fellow writers to put together a new book, “Going 15-Round with Jerry Izenberg,” and joins me on this special edition of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes where we don’t discuss a hero on the field, rather we focus on a hero who helped make the game more interesting for all of us.  Derek Jeter’s best season came in 2006, when he batted .343 with 14 homers, 97 RBIs and 118 runs. But he only finished second in American League MVP voting, being edge out by Minnesota’s Justin Morneau. Mike and the Mad Dog thought Jeter should have won, and on Nov. 21, 2006, the day the results were announced, they wanted answers. What was even more perplexing for Chris “Mad Dog” Russo is how one voter put Jeter sixth on his ballot. Mike and the Mad Dog tracked down that writer, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, and put him on the spot. “To me, you take Jeter out, are the Yankees as good a team? No. Are they a playoff team? Probably still a playoff team when you look at that lineup,” Cowley said. “So I mean, I base it a lot on that, and I talk to people. You grab some guys from around the American League and tell them: ‘Which guy do you think is the MVP? Which guy do you fear the most in that lineup?’ And I heard more people say they fear A-Rod and Cano more than they fear Jeter.” “They’re not watching Yankee games,” Russo fired back. Earlier in the show, the guys talked to Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger about why he voted Morneau first and Jeter second. “Everybody has their own definition of MVP,” Price said. “That’s kind of the beauty of it is that it’s open to interpretation.”

In this episode of Pod Yourself A Gun, we're talking episode six of The Sopranos, "Pax Soprana," released February 14th, 1999 (happy belated Valentine's Day to all the lovers out there). At Tony's suggestion, Junior is made acting boss after Jackie dies. In therapy, Tony surprises Dr. Melfi with an admission. Carmela and Irina (Tony's mistress) both suffer as Tony's libido takes a nosedive. Lots of topics to dive into in this episode, including Tony's most overt come on to Dr. Melfi to date (ever?), and some of his creepiest interactions with his poor goomar, Irina. Meanwhile, Junior is torn between being a Godfather and being a grumpy ass Fox News grandpa, Livia is manipulating Junior, Junior is taxing Hesh, Carmella is sweating Tony, Mikey Palmice is throwing people off of the bridge at Patterson Falls to make it look like a suicide, and Father Phil even gets a brief bit of screentime, reprising his role as the king of all f*ckboys. Our guest this week is New York Magazine television critic and RogerEbert.com editor at large Matt Zoller Seitz, who co-authored The Sopranos Sessions with Alan Sepinwall and originally covered the series for the Newark Star-Ledger. Enjoy and please give us a review and rating on iTunes! (Unless you hate it, in which case don't do that).

Philadelphia Inquirer Eagles beat reporter Zach Berman takes fans on a journey through the action-packed season -- from the preseason and midseason player pickups that shaped a championship team to the gut-wrenching injury of star quarterback Carson Wentz through to the bold play calling and nail-biting moments in Super Bowl LII, in which the Eagles bested the favored-to-win New England Patriots. A book unique in its scope and insight thanks to Berman's on-the-ground reporting, Underdogs will detail the unlikely story that captured national attention; explain how the team resonated among a desperate fan base that waited 57 years for a championship; and even delve into the players' social activism during a particularly political NFL season. With a foreword by beloved Philadelphia radio announcer Merrill Reese and an 8-page full-color photo insert, it's the perfect keepsake item for anyone who bleeds green. During his six years covering the Birds, Berman has developed relationships with some of the most notable characters that led the team to Super Bowl victory. In Underdogs, he'll explain why Nick Foles contemplated retirement on his way to winning Super Bowl MVP. He'll detail Howie Roseman's journey to NFL executive of the year after being cast aside by former coach Chip Kelly. He'll show Malcolm Jenkins' journey to team captain, how Chris Long's life changed in a Tanzania hotel bar, why Eagles kicker Jake Elliott didn't consider football until he was chosen at random at a high school pep rally, and where Carson Wentz ate dinner the night before he left for the NFL Draft. These more obscure stories offer incredible context and depth to an already fascinating story of success against the odds. About the Author: 9780762493548 Berman_Zach_Author credit Jessica Griffin.jpg Zach Berman covers the Philadelphia Eagles for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News. He previously wrote for The Washington Post and Newark Star-Ledger, and was a contributor for The New York Times. He also makes regular television appearances on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Order 'Hagar the Horrible: The Epic Chronicles: The Dailies 1976-1977' by clicing on the book cover above! Hagar the Horrible is getting his due. Finally. The adventures of one of the most unique, consistently funny comic strip characters – a dirty, drunken viking, of all things – is finally being collected in book form with publication of Hagar the Horrible: The Epic Chronicles. The strip, created in 1973 by Dik Browne – co-creator of with Mort Walker of “Hi and Lois” – holds a special place in my heart. When it debuted, I was a 13-year-old with his own subscription to the Newark Star-Ledger. My parents paid for home delivery of the New Brunswick Home News, but it was an afternoon paper with horrible comics and even worse sports coverage. So I took my own money each week – earned cutting lawns in the summer, shoveling snow in the winter – and paid for a morning Star-Ledger subscription. CHRIS BROWNE audio excerpt: "Hamlet, the thin little wisp of a boy in the comic strip, was based on me when I was younger and much wispier." I’m proud to say I have read Hagar from the very beginning. It was a big kick then, a few years ago when an odd business magazine assignment landed me in the Sarasota, Florida home and studio of cartoonist Chris Browne, son of Dik and his successor on Hagar. Chris was a wonderful host and I think it safe to say we hit it off famously. Friendship aside, it’s taken me years to convince Chris to step up to the microphones for a Mr. Media® interview, but the timing couldn’t be better as we celebrate his father Dik’s original work and Chris’ continuing efforts on Hagar the Horrible. Three mayors. A retired burlesque stripper. Two New Jersey assemblymen. An illegal kidney broker. A former punk rocker. The president of the Jersey City council. Real estate developers. Five Orthodox rabbis. Political operatives and Hasidic businessmen from New York. What do these seemingly disparate elements have in common? The Jersey Sting – a book written by then Star-Ledger reporters Josh Margolin (currently with The New York Post) and Ted Sherman (Newark Star-Ledger). The William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy was fortunate to bring the authors of The Jersey Sting to campus on March 29th. They were joined by Michael Aron, NJN news director, who served as a moderator. The event was also taped for national broadcast by C-Span’s popular “Book TV” series. “This is not a novel, you just can’t make these things up,” said Sherman, a reporter with the Newark Star-Ledger.
