We're saluting Muhammad Ali on his 82nd birthday with a compilation of stories told on Press Box Access by sportswriters who crossed paths with The Greatest. Dave Kindred, Jerry Izenberg and other veteran scribes share their personal memories of Ali going as far back as 1960. They put us ringside at Ali's greatest fights such as “The Rumble in the Jungle” and “The Thrilla in Manila.” They take us on trains, into hotel rooms, and onto the banks of Africa's Congo River. We even go to the circus with the heavyweight champ and world-renowned activist and humanitarian. Enjoy our treasure trove of Ali tales. Dave Kindred, on my Mount Rushmore of sportswriters, covered 17 of Ali's fights, dating back to when he wrote for The Courier-Journal in the champ's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Jerry Izenberg, who began his amazing journalism career in 1951, covered more of Ali's fights than any sportswriter, including epic bouts with Joe Frazier and George Foreman that live on in boxing history. Tom Archdeacon has covered more than 200 fights as a columnist and honored boxing writer in Ohio and Florida, and he not only sat ringside at Ali's final three bouts but also went to the circus with him. Tim Smith covered the fight game for many years at The New York Times, New York Daily News, and Cincinnati Enquirer, and he now works for Haymon Sports, a boxing management company. Thom Loverro, sports columnist at The Washington Times and an honored boxing writer, first met Ali as a young reporter visiting training camp in the late 1970s. Vito Stellino is best known as a longtime NFL writer, but he was ringside at Madison Square Garden in 1971 as a reporter covering the legendary Ali-Frazier I. Mary Schmitt Boyer puts us in Atlanta, Georgia on the night when Ali lit the Olympic torch, providing her a most treasured memory of the many Olympics that she covered. George Diaz had encounters with Ali as a longtime Florida boxing writer, and he's also the ghostwriter of legendary fighter Roberto Duran's autobiography, “I Am Duran.” Learn more about your ad choices. The New York Sun - ‘Baseball, Nazis & Nedick's Hot Dogs' Is a Story of Fathers, Sons, and a Lost America - Dean Karayanis June 17, 2023 - Reading about history is one thing, but what happens when a legendary sportswriter looks back nearly a century to recall his upbringing in Newark, New Jersey, during the trying decades of the ‘30s and ‘40s – as a Jewish kid, mind you — while Wall Street crashed and Hitler made war on the world? In this episode, our time machine welcomes aboard a real time-traveler — at least, that's how I like to think of people who bring us their memories from days few of us lived. His name is Jerry Izenberg, and his memoir — the most personal of his many books — is titled, “Baseball, Nazis & Nedick's Hot Dogs: Growing up Jewish in the 1930s in Newark.” Jerry Izenberg is one of just two daily newspaper columnists to have covered the first 53 Super Bowls. He's also been there for 54 consecutive Kentucky Derbies and the last five Triple Crown-winning horses. He earned the Red Smith Award for sports writing, has been named the New Jersey Sportswriter of the Year five times – oh, and is an inductee in in 17 Halls of Fame. In his memoir, Mr. Izenberg – now in his 90s – casts his keen eye back on his first two decades of life, the ones that made him who he is today, as he faced antisemitism, the Great Depression, and World War II to find love, community, and purpose. It's a life well lived, and it ain't over yet. Thanks to David Pietrusza, author of the upcoming book, “Gangsterland: A Tour Through the Dark Heart of Jazz-Age New York City,” for submitting a video question for his fellow baseball writer. You can enjoy my previous interviews with David here: Roosevelt Sweeps Nation: FDR's 1936 Landslide and the Triumph of the Liberal Ideal 1920: The Year of the Six Presidents 1932: The Rise of Hitler and FDR ― Two Tales of Politics, Betrayal, and Unlikely Destiny TR's Last War: Theodore Roosevelt, the Great War, and a Journey of Triumph and Tragedy Rothstein: The Life, Times, and Murder of the Criminal Genius Who Fixed the 1919 World Series Too Long Ago: A Childhood Memory. We're here today having a dream conversation with Star-Ledger legend Jerry Izenberg, largely about his new book "Baseball, Nazis, and Nedick's Hot Dogs: Growing Up Jewish in the 1930s in Newark". Jerry is an absolute gem: at 92 years old, he's full of nearly a century's worth of amazing stories about Newark. I've long admired him and it was an honor to sit back and listen to him spin some of his incredible tales. We've had a long running series as part of NJITW called Newark Conversations, and I think many might agree that this is about as ultimate a Newark conversation as a person could ever hope to have. He is rightfully a member of the New Jersey Hall of Fame and I'm humbled he took some time to hang out with us. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Hall of Fame sportswriter and author Jerry Izenberg joins SportsJam with Doug Doyle to talk about his memoir Baseball, Nazis and Nedick's Hot Dogs
Jerry Izenberg earned his first newspaper paycheck in 1951, and he's still writing as columnist emeritus at The Star-Ledger in Newark, New Jersey. “It has been an active life,” he says. Active? Try one of the most amazing careers in sports journalism. We're lucky to hear from Jerry in this second of a two-part episode about his 70 years in the business. Part 1 was all about Muhammad Ali. Jerry told tales from covering more of his fights than anyone. In this second episode, we hear how Jerry became a sports columnist, and how he learned from Red Smith and Jimmy Cannon. He tells us about the first Super Bowl and Pete Rozelle. Hear about Mike Tyson crying on Jerry's chest, and about the magnificent Pele's message to the crowd after his final soccer match. You'll laugh about the pigeons at Jerry's first boxing title match and smile about how a horse from Venezuela captured his heart. And you'll learn about the fortitude of Larry Doby, the baseball Hall of Famer who broke the American League color barrier and later developed a special relationship with Jerry. If you want stories about Muhammad Ali, you go to Jerry Izenberg. We did, and now you'll hear tales about Ali in this episode that you've probably never heard before. Izenberg's career in sports media is so special we're presenting a two-part episode with him. He's 91 and still writing as columnist emeritus at the Newark Star-Ledger in New Jersey, where he was hired in 1951. We'll cover his entire career in part 2, but this first episode with Izenberg is devoted entirely to his relationship with Ali. Jerry covered more of Ali's fights than any sportswriter, dating to their first meeting at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. He takes us inside the vicious rivalry between Ali and Joe Frazier, including a ringside seat at their brutal Thrilla in Manila. Jerry gives us an inside look at the Rumble in the Jungle when Ali reclaimed his heavyweight championship with an upset of George Foreman in Zaire. He also puts us in Las Vegas on that sad night when Larry Holmes beat up his old friend. Hear this and much more about The Greatest from one of the greatest sportswriters ever. If it's happened in boxing in the last 60-plus years, there's a fair chance Jerry Izenberg either covered it or saw it. The award-winning writer was a staple for the Newark Star-Ledger and is a Hall of Fame. Pete Rozelle's impact on professional football The wild ride with the 1986 New York Mets The Golden Age of heavyweight boxing
Jerry Izenberg might not be a recognizable name to most sport’s fans, but it’s one that will be eternally remembered when it comes to all sports. You see, Jerry Izenberg is one of the greatest writers to ever put pen to paper when it comes to covering the games we love to watch. Jerry spent time at several newspapers, most notably though, he spent most of his career writing for a paper that so few know (unless you live in or near New Jersey), the Newark Star-Ledger. Jerry also wrote, produced and directed sport’s specials and documentaries and authored several books including: “Once There Were Giants” … “The Greatest Game Ever Played” … “No Medals for Trying” … “Rozelle: A Biography”. While Jerry might not be as well-known as some of his contemporaries who wrote for larger newspapers, guys like Dave Anderson, Red Smith, Jim Murray, Jimmy Cannon, Shirley Povich or Frank Deford, doesn’t mean he was every bit as good – or better. So many couldn’t wait to get a copy of the paper every morning to read Jerry. But Jerry was even more! He found stories where no one dared to go before him. To make a stand and cover issues that others thought had no business being in the sport’s pages; and his work to raise money through sport’s endeavors has gone unnoticed by so many. Well, writer and author Ed Odeven recently sat down with Jerry and many of his fellow writers to put together a new book, “Going 15-Round with Jerry Izenberg,” and joins me on this special edition of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes where we don’t discuss a hero on the field, rather we focus on a hero who helped make the game more interesting for all of us. For close to six decades, Jerry Izenberg set the standard for the written word in sports information. During his years with the New Jersey Star-Ledger, which began in 1951, he brought sports to life not by recording hits or goals or transactions or salaries but by writing about the sportsmen themselves. Because of his straightforward reporting, Jerry includes among his friends the likes of Muhammed Ali and Larry Doby, two of the many people he talks about in his bio Through My Eyes: A SportsWriter’s 58-Year Journey. Inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame of New Jersey in 2000, Jerry won the prestigious Red Smith Award from the Associated Press Sports Editors. In this interview he discusses many of the highlights of his career of the people he met and of the events he covered. A graduate of Rutgers University, he has a passion for sports journalism and discusses the state of sports and journalism and what makes a great sports writer.
