What does our modern, secular culture get wrong about the Bible? That's a question Dan Kimball helps us wrestle with on this episode of the Q Ideas Podcast. Dan is a pastor at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, California and the author of the recent book, How (Not) to Read the Bible. In this conversation, Dan brings clarity to some of the more confusing parts of Scripture. He also shares why it's so important that Christians understand the Bible and teach others—especially the next generation—to do the same.  If you're a leader who cares about these conversations, don't miss the chance to participate in The Collaborative, our brand-new cohort experience. Barbell Logic
Coaching & Academy Q&A #378

Barbell Logic

Matt & CJ Gotcher answer your questions about the Academy and coaching, including when you should fire a client, how Matt's coaching practice has changed, the PBC process, and how to know if coaching is NOT right for you.  CJ Gotcher is a staff coach for Barbell Logic and the Academy Director.  0:00 Introduction 1:57 Firing a Client As a coach--or really anyone in the service industry--you will eventually come across a client who you no longer wish to serve. Often, this comes from repeatedly crossing boundaries. Often the coach is not a good fit for that person--it doesn't mean that the client is a bad person. How could I do this better? Often, that client needs a different coach who can better serve them. This is a great aspect of Barbell Logic, that we can usually find a different coach to better serve that client.  Occasionally, a client may habitually cross boundaries--the term "malevolent" pops up--and you should not feel like you need to protect yourself from the client. That is a sign you might need to fire a client.  7:02 How Has Matt's Coaching Practice Changed? We've moved from strength at all costs to strength as a tool to improve quality of life. There are other things important beyond strength training. We still value barbells and think barbells are a fantastic tool to improve quality of life. What is the client life-cycle? Matt has hit big squat and deadlift PRs, but he's okay with the idea that he never will again. He recognizes the sacrifices it would take to hit another PR, and he doesn't want to make them.  11:32 Credibility in Coaching - Clients' Wants vs Needs Have to realize that a new client has not necessarily bought in fully to your training paradigm, that you have to build credibility. For whatever reason, they've come to you, but you were likely one of multiple options.  What really matters--to you and the client? For example, if the client wants to compete in powerlifting and won't squat, that's a problem. If, however, the client wants to sumo deadlift and you think the conventional deadlift is better, how important is that to you? Can the client still accomplish his or her goals? For example, Matt now has Gillian Ward coaching him for strength (already a nutrition client). Matt is beat up from years of Strong Man & Powerlifting. Gillian has been asking how exercises feel, if they hurt, if they do hurt, where and how much? She is building trust and problem-solving and not pushing Matt into a cookie-cutter program.  16:26 Is Coaching NOT For Me? Just because you love to lift, doesn't mean you'll love coaching or be a great coach. If you don't really care about people, that's a red flag. Really ask yourself if you enjoy it? If you feel some resistance, which aspects of coaching might you not enjoy (because you will always not enjoy SOMETHING about a certain job or profession).  There are lots of different demographics and types of coaching, so experiment and see if a different demographic or type is better.  23:33 Training Older Men Can I find guard rails where they can push themselves (maybe a super heavy low bar squat can't be pushed, but what about some accessories or box squats or stressing the deadlift).  Educate them on why you're doing what you're doing.  A huge trust-builder here is to be more right about their experience than they are (eg they hammer themselves on Wednesday with extra volume after you've pushed less volume, have a discussion with them after they bonk on Friday--not an "I told you so" but a moment for education). 27:43 How Frequent is the Academy? It's at your own pace in an online learning environment. There are optional events, but you complete it when and where you want.  Also, there is the Advanced where you can deep dive into a subject you need to focus on.  30:26 Long-Legged Athletes-Squatting & Pulling They're going to look more bent over, but can also be too bent over. CJ finds himself using overcorrection cues "overcues." Most people aren't made to squat AND pull well. So, there are tradeoffs (Kirk Karwoski versus Ed Coan).  33:42 Beginning to Charge Clients Money It really should be as early as possible, because the money--even if it's not much--gives the client skin in the game. The flipside is you need to know that you can provide value to them.  How Not to Totally Suck as a Coach is a good article to Read. Make the exchange explicit--it might not be monetary.  38:56 In-Person & Online Coaching Hybrid Model? It depends on your situation, but it can definitely work. The general model might look like an introductory session or sessions and then go to a cheaper, online model that stresses accountability, programming, and just technique tweaks & reminders.  40:55 Coaching as a Side Gig? Is coaching worthwhile as a side gig? It depends. You have to enjoy and be good at coaching. You can certainly MED your way into coaching. It's DEFINITELY better than quitting your accounting job and going "all in" on coaching and "swing for the fences." 46:27 Best Way to Work at BLOC? We're not doing interviews & looking at resumes anymore. If you want to work at BLOC, go through the Academy, earn your PBC, and this is your BEST way to work at BLOC. It's not a guarantee, but it gives us a good way to evaluate you and your fit for BLOC. 49:50 Coaching My Parents...AAGH! Make it fun, limit the whole "I'm the expert," and ensure you're providing value--maybe you find another option.  51:40 What is the PBC Platform Process? First, yes, you can apply for the PBC without having gone through the Academy (you are forewarned, the failure rate is much higher for those who have not gone through the Academy).  The written exam is done first and you will do it on Zoom so we can see and observe you taking the exam. The exam is designed that you do not have enough time to look up the answers--if you came in and planned to look up all the answers on your phone, you will fail.  If you failed, you will know which sections caused you to fail (eg you did well on 3 sections but were weak on programming & biomechanics).  The next step--if you pass the written exam--is to schedule and go through an interview. Right now Andrew & Niki are doing them, but that may change.  Lastly, you go through the virtual platform evaluation. You will be coaching a real person, whom YOU must find. You submit videos of yourself taking them through the teaching progressions and working sets and submit that to a current PBC. We want to see how you coach in your own space.  The virtual exams allows the evaluator to provide better feedback on why you failed (if you fail). For example, the 3rd set of the squats, what error did you miss? What might you have cued? You can see what the evaluator saw and get feedback on what you need to work on. If you pass, you join the PBC registry and receive your physical PBC certificate in the mail.  GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE! More at https://www.philosophytalk.org/shows/ethics-awesomeness. The word “awesome” once meant inspiring extreme fear or dread. Nowadays it's mostly used as a general purpose exclamation of approval. So when we describe a person as awesome, are we saying that they exemplify some general form of excellence? Or are awesome people those who break specific social norms to generate moments of creative expression and social connection? Would the world be a better place if we all aimed to be more awesome and less sucky? Josh and Ray stand in awe of Nick Riggle from the University of San Diego, author of "On Being Awesome: A Unified Theory of How Not to Suck."

“Anything humans make of an artistic nature has to be literally brought into some kind of physical existence. Even if it is a lone person talking outside there has to be some kind of preparation of sorts, both the internal preparation of the one speaking, as well as how the physical setting is to be negotiated, the question of audience, if that is to be planned at all, the start and stop times of the speaking and so on. Interestingly we are very well aware of this when it comes to life outside the arts, the most prosaic or necessary things in life like housing or buildings in general. I believe we lose sight of this fact when its comes to the arts. That is, we tend to regard the arts as magically falling out of the sky and not a humanly made thing in the world like anything else, and one of the many missions of our podcast is to bring such matters into focus. I think Jaimee Wriston makes a wonderful representative of this principle, both because she has come out with a brand new novel, with a new publisher and we could discuss one of the most important aspects of being artist: getting a particular work out there. She also is so very articulate about such matters and that is important. It has been most interesting to follow the work of one particular writer like Jaimee Wriston. When first I encountered her novel Shark Girls on a long Amtrak ride alongside the Easter regional in a sleeper car I certainly had no idea about ever having a podcast or having its author on an episode. I am thankful for this opportunity and hope you enjoy hearing her discuss this aspect of being a writer in the world as much as you do reading her.” Jaimee's Bio,links to her beautiful worksJaimee Wriston Colbert is the author of seven books of fiction: How Not to Drown (2021), Vanishing Acts, Wild Things, Shark Girls, Dream Lives of Butterflies, Climbing the God Tree, and Sex, Salvation, and the Automobile. She also talks about how her book How Not To Save The World was inspired by her relationship with her brother, and the ways that she fell short in loving him well and pointing him to Christ. She has appeared many times on national television, and have been a speaker at O, You events—appearing before up to 5,000 women who have enrolled in a day's worth of Oprah-centric activities. Val is particularly interested in the intersection of kindness and perceptions of beauty and is working on developing a protocol for doctors doing aesthetic evaluations. She is also focusing on a multi-media project, including a Substack newsletter: How Not to Fu*k Up Your Face, philosophical and practical advice for anyone who's ever looked into a mirror. In this episode, Val and I talk about her extensive background in magazine journalism and her career highlights and lessons. Val explains the importance of embracing where you're at in life and how she's advocating for people to adopt a more positive outlook on aging and encourages all of us to love our faces without objectifying it. She is passionate about this topic and this message, which inspired her to start her blog and newsletter, where she is hoping to change the dialogue of aging in today's society. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast for episode #150 with Scott Flansburg[i] who Regis Philbin called “The Human Calculator[ii]” because he can mentally count faster than a calculator. Watch this interview on YouTube here. https://youtu.be/aa8mbxvYqrc Learn more about Scott Flansburg's online programs here. https://scottflansburg.com/a/andrea See past episodes here. https://www.achieveit360.com/episodes/   On this episode you will learn: ✔︎  How someone with incredible math abilities has started the National Counting Bee to share his talents with students around the country. ✔︎ 2 NEW WAYS to look at numeracy and math that will change your mindset forever. ✔︎ How Scott Flansburg got into the Guinness World Book of Records for his unique mathematical abilities and what his brain scans revealed about his brain. ✔︎ Scott's vision for the future and how he plans to change the way ALL 3rd graders approach math in the future. I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and the workplace with ideas that we can all use, understand and implement immediately. I do want to thank the listeners who have sent me messages through social media about how you are using these podcast episodes in your personal and professional lives. We are approaching our goal of hitting 200 episodes and 100,000 downloads and couldn't do this without listeners, or high-quality guests. Back to this episode. After being introduced to Howard Berg[iii], who holds the Guinness World record for speed reading, I was introduced to Dave Farrow[iv], a two-time Guinness World Record holder for correctly memorizing and recalling the exact order of 59 decks of shuffled playing cards. I began to see that extraordinary results are possible, when regular people, like you and me, do certain things in a certain way. I look forward to sharing Scott Flansburg's story, to see what strategies we can learn and implement to help us all improve our numeracy skills. Yes, he does hold the Guinness World Record for the fastest mental calculation after adding the same number to itself more times in 15 seconds, even faster than anyone could do with a calculator. I've heard of the importance of developing strong numeracy skills twice already, from past guests. On episode #138,[v] Professor and Canada Research Chair in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning, Dr. Daniel Ansari, affirmed that research shows that students with weak numeracy skills are more likely to default on their mortgage payments in the future, and on episode #146[vi] Dr. Howard Rankin, an expert in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience who spoke on the topic of “How Not to Think” agreed that low numeracy skills are a noticeable problem in the US, and that many people have no idea on the concept of “compounding interest.” Let's see what we can learn from Scott Flansburg. But first, here's a bit more about him. Since about 1990 Scott Flansburg has regularly given lectures and presentations at schools. He has been a presenter at organizations such as NASA, IBM, The Smithsonian Institution, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Mental Calculation World Cup. The latter described Flansburg as “more an auditory than a visual [mental] calculator”. One of Flansburg's “personal missions” is to use education to elevate math confidence and self-esteem in adults and children. He says “Why has it become so socially acceptable to be bad at math?,” and reminds us that “If you were illiterate, you wouldn't say that on TV, but you can say that you are bad at math. We have to change the attitude.” He believes students should become proficient with calculation methods rather than relying on table memorization. Scott is the creator of The Counting Bee™[vii], an annual STEM competition open for K-12 students at all public, private, charter, and home schools. Its inaugural competition was held on November 8, 2018, in Arizona, where I live. I wish I had known of Scott back then, for I would have been sitting in the front row, hoping to learn something. What's really interesting is that Scott discovered his mental calculation ability at the age of 9 when his math teacher asked him to add four numbers. He can mentally add, subtract, divide and multiply numbers with the accuracy of the calculator naturally. In 1990, he started using his abilities in the education and entertainment industry. To date, he has published books like Math Magic and Math Magic For Your Kids. Scott has been featured in popular shows around the world like The Ellen Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, USA Today, BBC breakfast, ESPN, History Channel, and many more. Let's meet Scott Flansburg. Welcome Scott, thank you very much for coming on the podcast today to share ways that we can improve our numeracy skills. This is such an honor for me to have this chance to speak with you. When I looked at your website, it's clear that you have caught the attention of some of the greats who have made their mark in history, like Larry King, or Regis Philbin who nicknamed you “The Human Calculator,” Tony Robbins, Oprah or comic book writer Stan Lee. Welcome! I've got to tell you Scott, when I see talent, it's impossible to look away! I was blown away with your story (watching you add a 2-digit number to itself 36 times in 15 seconds) but what really got me was seeing you on AZ Family TV with the 1st AZ Counting Bee[viii]and the National Counting Bee[ix] helping students with these skills. Intro Q: Why did you start the Counting Bee, and what is your vision for young people around the world with numeracy skills? Q1: Scott, what I love about stories like yours, is that there is such a huge need for numeracy skills (not just here in the US, but Globally) and I'm fully aware of how important mindset is for my own results/future, let alone my two girls who watch and model everything that I do, especially now that the Pandemic has taken away so much of those math skills that are cumulative. When I watched the winner of your Counting Bee, and the anchor asked his Mom “Where did he learn this from, was it you?” And she said strongly, “Definitely not!” Perhaps his Father? I recognized that I have said the exact same thing about my husband who is really good with numbers.  Why do you think people so afraid of numbers? Do you think there is a new sense of urgency around numeracy skills that is different now with the times we have faced? Q2: When did you notice that you had these numeracy skills that were helpful for your family while grocery shopping (I read that you could add up the tally of a grocery list before the cashier had rung up your orders) or at what age did you notice that your brain worked differently from the other students? Q3: How did you get into the Guinness World Book of Records? How did you even know about trying for this? Q4: What have you learned about your brain and how it might be different from other brains? I saw something about the fact that scientists associate your mathematical skills with the fact that an area in your brain is displaced upward and significantly expanded? Did you have your brain scanned? How would anyone know this? Q5: I have put a link to your website, with your programs listed, but what are the programs you offer?  I see courses for kids, students, and professionals. Can you tell me about each one? Thank you so much for your time today and for what you are doing to help the world embrace numbers in a different way. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, for Brain Fact Friday and episode #147 that has taken me back to Dr. Jon Lieff from episode #143[i] and his book The Secret Language of Cells: What Biological Conversation Tells Us About the Brain-Body Connection, the Future of Medicine and Life Itself.[ii] I'm Andrea Samadi, author and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and the workplace with ideas that we can all use, understand and implement immediately, for improved results.   In Today's Brain Fact Friday You Will Learn: ✔︎ How Brain Fog is Created  ✔︎ How the Brain and Immune System Work Together ✔︎ How Cells Communicate with Each other ✔︎ How to Strengthen Our Brain-Mind-Body Connection by Understanding Our Brain State On our last Brain Fact Friday, episode #141, I talk about how meeting Dr. Lieff opened my eyes to the importance of keeping the cells in our body healthy for our future health, productivity, and results and that I had never thought about my health through this lens. His book explores the cellular conversation as a new way of understanding that our cells have constant, intelligent chatter between them, showing there is no separation of brain-body, mind-body or brain-immune and It got me thinking about neurogenesis, (how we create new cells in the brain) reminding me to take my Omega 3-DHA to increase Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, (which is the best way to produce new brain cells) and the ties to keeping our brain cells healthy for learning, memory and retention. But what else is there? What are some other ways that I can look at health, wellness and productivity at the cellular level? Which Leads us to This Week's Brain Fact Friday Have you ever wondered why we get brain fog, or have a harder time thinking when we are stressed? Dr. Jon Lieff shared with me why this happens, and I think it's important that everyone understands this function of our brain and body. Did you know that the brain and immune system work together? T-cells (an essential part of the immune system, a type of leukocyte or white blood cell) sends a message to the neurons (the cells in the brain and nervous system) to stop making memory cells (when you are stressed) and you get brain fog. Dr. Lieff reminded us in our interview that stress is “at the interface of brain function and inflammation” and that “T cells are essential for dealing with stress…Both brain and immune cells pick up perceptions of stress. Brief stress related to learning or the unexpected can be helpful in stimulating positive brain activity. However, chronic stress (where the body has no way to break from a stressor) can trigger damaging inflammation.”[iii] We have all heard that stress causes inflammation in the body, that “leads to a number of chronic health conditions”[iv] like cancer and viral infections and Dr. Lieff comes to the conclusion that “all processes in the human body, in all animals and plants, and in microbe communities as well, are based on conversations and group decision making among cells.”[v] One of the many fascinating parts of my interview with Dr. Lieff, that I have had many messages about, was where he explained that no one knew there were immune cells near the brain. Cerebral fluid (a colorless fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord) he explained “is also for communication and that t-cells get into this fluid and send messages to neurons.”[vi] When there is an infection in our body, the immune cells send “a sick feeling” to our body signaling us to pay attention to what we are feeling and take a rest or break so that healing can take place. Have you ever felt that feeling? You are working and something feels off in your body? Stefanie Faye mentioned the concept of “interoception” (being able to perceive the sensations from inside the body in episode #39[vii] and Dr. Daniel Stickler mentioned it in on episode #96[viii] with an athlete's ability to read their body and not overtrain. Dr. Lieff shared that when everything is well within the body, “T cells signal to the brain that conditions are safe for normal activity” (page 35) but the minute there is an infection, or trauma, “the T cells change their messages to the brain to signal that the body is sick and the brain must slow down” until the t cells recognize that it is ok to return back to normal. We should be able to feel this shift in the body. This is a recent discovery that can serve us well to keep us operating at our highest levels possible. We must understand that our cells are smart, and that they communicate with each other, but this is just the beginning. What are some simple steps we can take to strengthen our brain? We will dive deeper into this next week with our interview with Dr. James Hardt[ix], who has worked with Tony Robbins, Michael Jackson, leaders of Microsoft, IBM and other high-powered executives to elevate states of intelligence and consciousness, but until then, here are my tips for keeping a healthy brain-body-immune system. HOW TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BRAIN-BODY-IMMUNE SYSTEM? UNDERSTAND YOUR PATTERNS AND BRAIN STATE: If our brain and immune system are closely tied, it makes sense to me that we should understand something about how our brains work. Do you know the brain state you are in, how you operate, and how to switch between different brain states to improve your productivity? We have talked about the importance of switching between different networks in the brain to improve levels of creativity, with episode #48[x] on Brain Network Theory (bringing us to heightened perception with GAMMA brain waves,  and Stefanie Faye just released an article that affirms “the more we start to notice the rhythms we have in our brain states, moods, relationships, and day to day functioning, the better we get at cultivating the right conditions ahead of time, in a preventative, systems-thinking and growth-oriented way.”[xi] Through the brain mapping she does, Faye believes that people who experience brain fog are operating with THETA BRAIN WAVES (4-8 HZ) which is slower than needed for higher levels of productivity experienced at the ALPHA (9-13 level). Dr. James Hardt, who will take us deeper into the power of changing our brain states to change our life, next week, reminds us that “the average person's brain state shows low ALPHA (where creativity exists) and high BETA (stress)” whether it's time urgency, financial stress, or health related, this type of stress we know leads to dis-ease in the body. I do look forward to sharing more on this topic next week, and diving deeper, as I think we have only just started to scratch the surface of how to reach these higher levels of thinking with our last interview with expert in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, Dr. Howard Rankin on “How Not to Think[xii]” and if we were to brain map ourselves, it would be very clear, that most of us do not think—or we think far less than we think we think. That's it for this week's Brain Fact Friday on understanding how the brain-body, mind-body and brain-immune system work together and I hope that you have taken away something useful to help you to understand how we get brain fog, vs mental clarity, with some thoughts on moving to new brain wave levels for improved results. The key to this week's brain fact is that switching brain states takes focused effort. We must first of all be aware of where we are, (Dr. Hardt thinks most of us are at the BETA STATE) before we can move to a new state.   The only way I know of to move to the ALPHA STATE is through a state of wakeful relaxation that can be cultivated with a mindfulness/meditation practice, or from deep thinking that takes us into our non-conscious mind that World Renowned Neuroscientist Dr. Carolyn Leaf explains in our bonus interview on “Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess.[xiii] From the research I am doing on Dr. Hardt, I can see there are quicker and easier ways to reach these higher levels and I look forward to sharing them with you. If you would like to see Stefanie Faye's recent article on “3 Ways to Get Rid of Brain Fog and Increase Mental Clarity” I will link her article in the show notes. Will see you next week with Dr. James Hardt, and I do look forward to sharing with you the new workshops we are creating for schools and workplace, as we begin to implement these ideas into our classrooms and workplaces. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast for episode #146 with Dr. Howard Rankin, the host of the “How Not to Think Podcast” that runs on the premise that "People aren't logical, they're psychological with the emphasis on the psycho," which made me laugh at the same time as it made me think “How are we NOT supposed to think?” and the research on this topic began. Watch the interview on YouTube here.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DlnOXE39aQ Learn more about Dr. Howard Rankin here https://hownottothink.com/ See past episodes here https://www.achieveit360.com/episodes/ On this episode, you will learn: ✔︎ What is the problem with our thinking, and why is it illogical? ✔︎ How awareness is important when making any decision. ✔︎ The importance of looking at things from a different perspective. ✔︎ Why "the more we know, the more we realize we know nothing at all." ✔︎ Why new knowledge opens up our world to new possibilities. ✔︎ How to motivate anyone to learn something new. ✔︎ Why reality is an illusion. ✔︎ Common problems that occur with our human thinking process and how to be aware of them. ✔︎ How self-limiting beliefs influence our results. I'm Andrea Samadi, author and educator from Toronto, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and the workplace with ideas that we can all use, understand and implement immediately, for improved results. This week's guest, Dr. Rankin, an expert in cognitive neuroscience, recently published his book I Think Therefore I Am Wrong[i] which looks at the many ways we can sabotage our thinking through cognitive biases, binary thinking, false assumptions and numerous other strategies. The How Not To think Podcast[ii] based on his book, examines how this false reasoning manifests itself in many areas of society through myths, and 'conventional wisdom.' On his podcast that I will be a guest on, Howard speaks with leaders in their fields to examine the impact of faulty thinking that occurs in every sphere of life. Dr.  Rankin has extensive expertise and knowledge in the areas of psychology, cognitive neuroscience and neurotechnology. He is also an experienced speaker and best-selling and award-winning author. Dr. Rankin has written 12 books in his own name, co-written another 9, and ghostwritten 30 others, all non-fiction. He has also published more than 30 scientific articles and been a consultant to the NIH and WHO (World Health Organization). His work has been featured in many newspapers and magazines and he has appeared on national networks including CNN, ABC, CBS, BBC, and on “The View” and “20/20”. He hosts the podcast How Not To Think and is the author of I Think Therefore I Am Wrong: A Guide to Bias, Political Correctness, Fake News and The Future of Mankind. Let's meet Dr. Rankin and see what we can learn about improving how we think. Welcome Dr. Rankin, thank you for being here today to share your knowledge and insights on your recent book, I Think, Therefore I am Wrong that you say is about Epistemology, what our past speaker, Tom Beakbane, on episode #144 said was the origin of his book How to Understand Everything[iii]. Can we start right away with the most obvious question? Q1: What is the problem with our thinking, how is it illogical, and why are people psychological, with an emphasis on the psycho? Q2: What inspired you to write your book, and launch your podcast on this topic? Q3: I love making connections with past speakers and what I see with your work, I connected with Tom Beakbane's book on How to Understand Everything where he talks a lot about looking at things from a different angle. With all the books you've written, you've got the knack for uncovering ways to tell something from a different angle, in a way that someone might not have heard it in that way. Why is it important to be able to see things from a different perspective? What does this do to our thinking? Q4: I was talking with my good friend Greg Link from Stephen Covey's organization the other day, after one of my last podcasts, and after some discussion I came to the realization that the more I am learning through these interviews, the more I realize I don't know anything at all! Greg told me that quote originated from the American author Warner Ehrhard who was quoting the Greek Stoic Philosopher Epictetus What do you think about this? The more we are learning, why does it take us into a rabbit hole where we realize we have no idea about anything at all? Q5: Chapter 1 of your book is titled “Is Reality an Illusion” and Einstein said this. What does that mean? Q6: What is logic and why do you think it's involved with some of the problems you see with our thinking? Q7: What about our beliefs or more specifically, our self-limiting beliefs? What are they and how do they influence our results? Q8: How does neuroscience or an understanding of how our brain works tie into our thinking and behavior? Q9: What should we all know and understand about “How Not to Think” for educators, or those in the corporate workspace? Thank you very much Dr. Rankin for your time today to share your thoughts, ideas, books and podcast as tools and resources for those who would like to learn more about How Not to Think. 143. How to Embrace Adversity and Say, “Come What May”

Monetization Nation Podcast

This is Entrepreneurs of Faith, a Sunday episode of Monetization Nation. I'm Nathan Gwilliam, your host. In today's episode, we're going to discuss ways we can embrace adversity and have the attitude of, “Come what may.”    Come What May   In 2008, Joseph Wirthlin, an American businessman, and the religious leader gave a sermon titled, “Come What May, and Love It.” In his sermon, he shared a simple, yet powerful message he learned from his mother.    When Wirthlin was a young boy, he loved to play sports. After a tough loss during a football game, he came home feeling discouraged. His mother listened to his story and said, “Joseph, come what may, and love it.”   When we experience hardships and disappointments we have to learn how to pick ourselves back up and move on. While we can't control what trials we encounter, we can control how to react to them.    “[E]very life has peaks and shadows and times when it seems that the birds don't sing and bells don't ring,” Wirthlin said. “Yet in spite of discouragement and adversity, those who are happiest seem to have a way of learning from difficult times, becoming stronger, wiser, and happier as a result.”   As entrepreneurs, we need to learn how to continue on after failures and adversity. There will be times when we lose an investment, a partner betrays us, or a client falls through. Yet despite these setbacks, we can find ways to smile and move forward.   How to Embrace Adversity    As we experience adversity in our businesses, we can find ways to embrace it.    Learn to Laugh   Wirthlin said the first thing we can do is learn to laugh. He asked, “Have you ever seen an angry driver who, when someone else makes a mistake, reacts as though that person has insulted his honor, his family, his dog, and his ancestors all the way back to Adam?” Instead of cursing at the world, we need to learn to laugh at these small hardships.    Laughter can help reduce stress hormones, release tension in our muscles, increase endorphins to boost happiness levels and reset the brain to be more positive (Source: University of St. Augustine). As we laugh in our companies and stressful careers, we will actually improve our state of mind and enter into a better mindset to continue on despite adversity.    “The next time you're tempted to groan, you might try to laugh instead,” Wirthlink said. “It will extend your life and make the lives of all those around you more enjoyable.”   Having a sense of humor is a trait many great entrepreneurs have. For example, Elon Musk has a sense of humor about failure. When SpaceX finally reached one of their goals, they posted a blooper reel showcasing all the mistakes they made along the way, including failed engine sensors and a collapsed landing leg (Source: Entrepreneur). They even posted a video titled, “How Not to Land an Orbital Rocket Booster.”   When we have a sense of humor and learn to laugh, we will be encouraged to try again even after the most devastating failures.    Keep the Big Picture in Mind    Whenever we experience adversity, we should keep the big picture in mind. We may be stuck in a rut on the road to a much greater destination. Wirthlin calls this seeking for the eternal.  “You may feel singled out when adversity enters your life,” Wirthlin said. “You shake your head and wonder, ‘Why me?' But the dial on the wheel of sorrow eventually points to each of us. At one time or another, everyone must experience sorrow. No one is exempt.” We need to understand that no one on earth has lived or will live a life without any pain, disappointment, or struggle. If we can remember this, it won't feel like the end of the world when we hit a roadblock. Instead, it will feel like another hurdle we can jump over to continue on our journey. “Learning to endure times of disappointment, suffering, and sorrow is part of our on-the-job training,” Wirthlin said. “These experiences, while often difficult to bear at the time, are precisely the kinds of experiences that stretch our understanding, build our character, and increase our compassion for others.” As we keep the bigger picture in mind, we will recognize that adversity is only temporary.  Trust in the Lord   Having faith and trust in the Lord will help us learn to accept and embrace adversity. We can know that the Lord would never give us a trial He knew we couldn't handle. Each hardship in our lives has been given to us for a reason.    Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” As we trust in God, he will help direct our paths and bless us.    Kenton Lee is the founder and inventor of the “shoe that grows.” He created a shoe that expands five sizes so that it can grow with an impoverished child for over five years. He has helped send more than 100,000 pairs of shoes to children in over 90 countries. However, this success didn't come until after six years of adversity.     “[W]hatever God was calling me to, I really felt like I could do it, but I knew it wasn't going to happen overnight,” Lee said. He continued, “People often ask me, ‘Why didn't you quit? Didn't you get so discouraged during those six years trying to work on this idea?' We had a lot of ups and downs and a lot of rejection and failure during those six years. As people asked me that, I kind of said I never got discouraged really because my expectation wasn't that this was going to happen overnight.” (Source: Technology of Work)   Lee kept the bigger picture in mind over the six years and continued forward with trust in God. He believed that God would help direct him down the path he needed to take. Sometimes we just have to do the best we can and then leave the rest in God's hands.    Look Back at Our Accomplishments    A great way to overcome adversity and keep a positive mindset is looking back at and express gratitude for our previous accomplishments. It may feel like we go through failure after failure when starting a new business, but if we look back at where we started we may be surprised to see how far we've come.    Arthur Godfry, an American radio and television broadcaster and entrepreneur, was able to do this in his career. He said, “Looking back on my achievements, it is fair to say that I am extremely proud of what I have done and accomplished so far.”   Godfrey went through much adversity in his life. Early in his career, he suffered severe injuries in a car accident. While he was in the hospital, he listened to the radio hour after hour, and when he was released, he got into radio and eventually got his own morning show on CBS radio (Source: New York Times). Godfrey didn't let his adversity stop him from progressing. He continued moving forward, looking back on his previous accomplishments, and being grateful for where he was.    Refuse to Give Up   We shouldn't give up just because we experience adversity.    Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Motor Co., Ltd, said, “Success is 99% failure.” At 15 years old, Honda left high school to work in an auto repair shop. He eventually opened his own branch and while working at the shop, he created automotive parts for Toyota, but they were rejected (Source: Quality Logo Products). However, he didn't let this rejection stop him.   When gas became scarce after World War II, he created a small 2-stroke motor that would need little gas to operate. Now, Honda is worth about $52 billion (Source: Macro Trends).    As we go through adversity, we should find an opportunity for growth.    “I do believe that the way we react to adversity can be a major factor in how happy and successful we can be in life,” Wirthlin said. “If we approach adversities wisely, our hardest times can be times of greatest growth, which in turn can lead toward times of greatest happiness.”    Key Takeaways   Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   Let adversity come and choose to embrace it.  We should learn to laugh. Laughter can reduce stress hormones, release tension, boost happiness levels, and reset the brain to be more positive. Whenever we experience adversity, we should keep the big picture in mind. We may be stuck in a rut on the road to a much greater destination.  As we trust in God, he will help direct our paths and bless us.  A great way to overcome adversity and keep a positive mindset is looking back at our previous accomplishments.  As we go through adversity, we should find an opportunity for growth.    Join Entrepreneurs of Faith If this episode of Entrepreneurs of Faith resonated with you, please subscribe for FREE to Monetization Nation so you can receive future episodes of Entrepreneurs of Faith. #359: The Hard Questions That Might Save Your Relationship | Susan Piver

10% Happier with Dan Harris

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2021 61:58

Today we have some counterintuitive relationship advice. If you're in a tough spot with your loved one, why would you want to have a deep chat about religion, politics, work, or your eating habits? Wouldn't that just make everything worse? My guest today says asking these hard questions is exactly what you should do.  Susan Piver is a fan favorite in TPH-world. She has been a practicing Buddhist for more than a quarter-century. She's a graduate of a Buddhist seminary, founder of The Open Heart Project, and a New York Times bestselling author of many books, including How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life. This month, she's releasing a revised and expanded edition of her blockbuster book, The Hard Questions: 100 Essential Questions to Ask Before You Say “I Do.” This book started out as a relationship tool for recently engaged couples, but it's taken on a much broader life. You can use it if your long-term relationship has hit a snag, if you've recently broken up with someone and want to understand why, or if you're single and just want to know yourself better. The book originally came out 20 years ago, but a lot has changed since then, so Susan has gone through and done a big rewrite.  In this conversation, we talk about: why hard questions are so key to building or rebuilding the foundation for a healthy relationship; the difference between love affairs and long-term relationships (and how failing to see the difference can tank your relationship); why breakups are rarely caused by lack of love, but instead by something else; and Susan will explore, from a Buddhist perspective, what happens when the boundaries between you and another person begin to dissolve – and what to watch out for when this happens. Also, there's (just barely!) still time to join us in our free Taming Anxiety Challenge. This ten-day meditation challenge will teach you how to understand your anxiety and give you practical tools for coping with the difficult thoughts and emotions that arise when you are anxious. And it's also a great way to kickstart your meditation practice.  You can join the Taming Anxiety Challenge by downloading the Ten Percent Happier app: https://10percenthappier.app.link/install. You should be prompted to join the Challenge after registering your account. It's a bonus episode! Hey Startup Marketing listeners! I've had so many changes the past two months, that I decided to do a bonus episode. Today it's just me and this episode has been percolating in my heart and mind for a long time. It's my personal story and I hope that I'm able to capture and highlight all the reasons why I believe this is the start of a very important conversation that I can help lead. I'm going to start with the most exciting part about all of these changes and then kinda walk you through my rationale for them and the lessons I've learned over the past year and a half that led me to make my choice.  I recently started a position as the director of marketing for a startup called PayRecs where we offer an online app to help automate and simplify international payments for financial institutions. For the past year I've been trying as hard as possible to NOT be a financial marketer, but it seems I just can't escape it! I guess when you're good at something you should lean into it? IDK, more on that thought later.  So, what enticed me enough to take a full time position when I already have my own business? There were a lot of things that went into this decision: The economic impact of covid on my family My desire to be a part of an awesome project My ability to focus more on the parts of my business I love rather than prospecting So much more I hope my story shows you that an entrepreneurial journey looks different for everyone. Kevin & Fred's Next Level Podcast: Quick Tips for Realtors and Interviews from the best in the real estate business

In the second part of my conversation with Adam Robinson, we discuss the work and research he did for his book How Not to Be Stupid, and what the dynamics of stupidity are in today's world.    This is a timely discussion because by the measure of Adam's criteria of stupidity, we're in the danger zone now. Adam shares why we need to be cautious when we find ourselves in the stupid zone, and how the stupid zone creates behavioral blind spots that make us more susceptible to disaster.    What makes the stupid zone even more perilous is that it not only makes us blind to crucial information, we're not even aware that we're blind. In the stupid zone, we need to proceed slowly and with caution. Unfortunately, much of our society isn't proceeding with caution, making everything even worse. Adam shares what action, if any, we can take in the stupid zone.  We also discussed;  The true definition of stupidity and why intelligent people can still be in the stupid zone.  How authority and group dynamics play into stupidity.  Why rushing amplifies stupidity in these times.  The riskiness of life right now    Guest Info   Adam Robinson is an American educator, freelance author, and a US Chess Federation life master. He is the co-founder of The Princeton Review. He currently works as a global macro advisor to the heads of some of the world's largest hedge funds through his company Robinson Global Strategies. He advises the heads of large hedge funds, family offices, and other financial institutions on all global asset classes–global equities, US sectors, bonds, currencies, and commodities–using a unique approach that combines game theory, systems thinking, Bayesian analysis, and behavioral economics to outthink global markets and anticipate when major trends will change.

Johnny Flynn is in the rare position and being both an acclaimed musician and a successful actor who is breaking into the A-list both here and in America. He recently starred as David Bowie in the biopic Stardust and Mr Knightly in a big-screen adaptation of Emma and has just released an album he made during lockdown with writer Robert MacFarlane; Lost in the Cedarwood. He joins Nikki Bedi and Richard Coles to talk about combining music, acting and family life. James O'Brien grew up knowing he wanted to follow in the footsteps his journalist father by having his own career in the media. However, after experiencing a crisis in his personal life a few years ago, James realised that neither is job as a broadcaster on LBC or his expensive public school education had prepared him to cope with his emotional trauma. He talks about his book How Not to be Wrong: The Art of Changing Your Mind. When most people take pictures of their friends, the photos are briefly admired but usually quickly forgotten. But when Carinthia West took photos of her friends in the 70s, they included icons such as The Rolling Stones and Helen Mirren. Carinthia's candid photos which offer a glimpse into the private lives of the rich and talented were left unprinted for decades and have only recently been revealed to the public for the first time. Steve Brown was captain of Great Britain's wheelchair rugby team at the London Paralympics in 2012. Since then, he has become a regular fixture on our TV screens as a presenter on Countryfile and Escape to the Country. He talks to us about his love of nature and the moments which changed the course of his life. And we hear the Inheritance Tracks of Sugababe Keisha Buchanan. Any system in which politicians represent geographical districts with boundaries chosen by the politicians themselves is vulnerable to gerrymandering: carving up districts to increase the amount of seats that a given party is expected to win. But even fairly-drawn boundaries can end up quite complex, so how do we know that a given map is unfairly skewed? Math comes to the rescue. We can ask whether the likely outcome of a given map is very unusual within the set of all possible reasonable maps. That's a hard math problem, however — the set of all possible maps is pretty big — so we have to be clever to solve it. I talk with geometer Jordan Ellenberg about how ideas like random walks and Markov chains help us judge the fairness of political boundaries.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Jordan Ellenberg received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University in 1998.
