Good hunters are constantly upgrading their tactics each season as they gain new skills and knowledge. One of the more advanced tactics is adjusting to thermal differences that create air drafts and currents which move a hunter's scent in ways that could get him busted by a nearby deer. Greg of Whitetail Partners is an expert at reading and adjusting to thermal changes and he joined the show to share some of his knowledge on this, and other high level deer hunting tactics. If you're a deer hunter, you've likely dreamed of buying your very own hunting property. A place where you can have total control over what is done to the property, a place to bring family and friends, a place to kill big bucks, a place to simply call your own. But sometimes, land ownership isn't all it's cracked up to be. The hunting on a given property may fall short of our expectations. We may have forces beyond our control that hamper our enjoyment of the property. Owning ground may prove to be more of a nightmare than a dream. So what should you do to make sure it's your dream that becomes a reality, and not your nightmare? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about buying a piece of hunting land. Sam is a habitat consultant and real estate agent in Wisconsin. The guys cover all the ins and outs of finding land that's right for you. Learn more about your ad choices. Deer season is winding down for many if not most, and it's time to sit back and reflect on our season. Did you get the buck you were after? Did you see the deer numbers you thought you should be seeing? Did the deer use your property in predictable ways? Were you able to access your hunting locations without bumping deer? All of these questions may reveal that our season could have been better from a deer hunting perspective. So what if you're unhappy with how your season went? If that's you, it just might be time for a hunting property tune-up. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about evaluating your hunting property and when it might be time to call in a consultant. Sam has year of experience with on-site whitetail hunting property consultation and provides top-tier habitat and hunting plans to his clients. Over the years, Sam has learned what works to attract and hold deer, and to influence their movement across your hunting property. Whether you just bought a new property, lease ground that you can manipulate, or have hunted the same 40 acres for decades, Sam can help take your deer hunting to the next level. Tune in to hear how Sam evaluates his hunting season, how he scouts his property once the season is over, and how he designs hunting properties to provide excellent hunting for his clients. For those of you who own hunting properties, just bought a new one, or simply have countless thoughts and questions on how to improve deer habitat, this episode is for you. Sam dives into assessing how your property performed in 2023, what projects are best to start right off the bat while deer sign is the most fresh, timber stand improvement including the do's and don'ts of hinge cutting, and so much more to help you start 2024 on the right foot wherever you hunt! On this episode of the SG+T podcast, Rick is joined by Josh Raley of Whitetail Partners and the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast network. Josh is a jack of all trades when it comes to the whitetail world and brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. As a Wildlife Habitat Consultant for Whitetail Partners, Josh understands what deer like and why they do what they do. Through his work with Sportsmen's Empire, he hosts multiple podcasts including the How to Hunt Deer, Wisconsin Sportsman and The Southern Way shows and brings perspective not only from his own hunting experiences, but also from the numerous guests he's shared a microphone with. If you listen to hunting podcasts, it's a pretty safe bet that you've heard him along the way.He and Rick have a similar background, both growing up in Alabama and then moving away, having to adjust their approach to hunting. Josh now lives in Georgia, and while he hunts some close to home, like Rick he takes an annual trip to the midwest during the November rut, and then spends the rest of the year making short trips to Bama. The guys cover a lot on this episode, but focus on the balancing act that comes with a busy hunting schedule, the mental gymnastics that take place after their trips to the midwest, and the perspective that they believe most hunters should share. This one was a lot of fun and Josh brings several tips that could set any southern hunter up for success on an out of state trip...you don't want to miss this one!As always, a big thanks to all of the listeners for your support. Opening day is in the rear view and for many, early season aspirations have turned to broken dreams. Now the deer movement seems to have dried up in all of our tried and true spots. What happened? Is this the (cue the ominous music) OCTOBER LULL?! Well, yes and no. Studies Show that deer movement increases throughout the month of October with no decrease. But the experience of many hunters is that deer sightings by mid October have slowed to a trickle. What's going on here? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn, Jake Hendrickson, and Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about the dreaded (or nonexistent) October Lull. The guys talk about what goes into hunters' perception of a lull in deer movement and how they would adjust to target a mature buck during the middle of October. It's no secret. Hunting on relatively lightly pressured, manicured private land is very different than hunting the highly pressured public piece down the road. But is one really better than the other? Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and both can afford you a great time chasing whitetails! In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about Greg's take on hunting public vs private land. Greg is a Habitat Consultant with Whitetail Partners. As a Habitat Consultant, Greg spends time working with landowners helping them improve their property and their hunting. But each year, Greg stretches his legs for public land whitetails in multiple states. So which is better? In this episode, the guys discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both and how hunting BOTH types can make you a better all around deer hunter. Enjoy!
