On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan breaks down what he looks for in hunting spots while e-scouting public land. Recently, Dan found out that he finally drew a Kansas archery tag. He has never hunted Kansas, so he is starting from scratch when it comes to finding places to hunt. Because this is an out of state hunt, Dan is going to rely heavily on using digital maps to e-scout the public properties before he hunts them. You will hear what specific terrain features he is looking for, how may points of access he would like those properties to have, and one of the biggest contributing factors... food sources.
On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is once again solo venting his ideas and frustrations to his listeners. The first part of this episode is dedicated his disinterest in "Hunting Masterclass" themed content. Dan feels there is no shortcuts to becoming a better deer hunter, specifically bowhunting. Time in the woods is the best and most effective method of learning. Then, Dan breaks down a very quick look in to his summer and fall trail camera strategy that includes summer inventory, terrain features, and knowing your local doe group.
On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan gives us an update on how his spring is going and what is on his deer to-do-list. On Dan's list of things to do includes a little bit of habitat work that will improve cover, setting up mineral locations for summer inventory, moving treestands to better ambush points, and getting trail cameras ready to be places in their summer starting points. The more time we spent preparing for the upcoming season, the better success one will have for the upcoming deer hunting season. Good luck, enjoy, and share!
If you live in the midwest or the south and haven't done any scouting this year, I hate to say it, but you missed out on the perfect time of the year to scout. With that said scouting now is still better than no scouting at all. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan gives his opinions about what we should all be doing right now to find better hunting locations for the fall. Dan talks about when trail cameras should go up, locating terrain features through e-scouting vs. boots on the ground, and knowing that just because deer are in a specific area right now, doesn't mean that they will be there come hunting season. This is a short, yet educational episode that might just help you get ready for the upcoming deer hunting season. Enjoy and share!
It's the offseason, that means planning, scouting, and habitat improvement for next deer season! In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh and the Whitetail Partners crew break down a recent design of a 200 acre hunting property. Enjoy!
Ahhh... Shed season is upon us!!!! Wait, are you really that excited for shed season? A quick glance at social media would suggest that if you aren't shed hunting, you're REALLY missing out. But for those of us without primo ground and a boatload of late season food, a shed hunt often produces little more than a walk in the woods and sore feet. It's likely that for MOST deer hunters, you'd be better off using this time for other activities that may actually help your hunting next fall because, in all honesty, shed hunting kinda sucks...
It's time to get boots on the ground! Deer seasons are wrapped up and the holidays are behind us. Time to get out there on the post season scouting grind to set yourself up for success in the 2024 season. To kick off the post season conversations, we're going to chat about post-season scouting. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about scouting and capitalizing on micro features in hill country. If you're a deer hunter, you've likely dreamed of buying your very own hunting property. A place where you can have total control over what is done to the property, a place to bring family and friends, a place to kill big bucks, a place to simply call your own. But sometimes, land ownership isn't all it's cracked up to be. The hunting on a given property may fall short of our expectations. We may have forces beyond our control that hamper our enjoyment of the property. Owning ground may prove to be more of a nightmare than a dream. So what should you do to make sure it's your dream that becomes a reality, and not your nightmare? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about buying a piece of hunting land. Sam is a habitat consultant and real estate agent in Wisconsin. The guys cover all the ins and outs of finding land that's right for you.
It's that time of year. Deer seasons are winding down for most, and while some still have a month of season left, the end is definitely just over the horizon. And though it's cliche, your success in the fall of 2024 just may hinge on what you do RIGHT NOW! Will you move on to other hobbies and interests, or will you lace up the boot straps and spend the time post season scouting? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh and Pierce discuss their plans and strategy for post season scouting.
Deer season is winding down for many if not most, and it's time to sit back and reflect on our season. Did you get the buck you were after? Did you see the deer numbers you thought you should be seeing? Did the deer use your property in predictable ways? Were you able to access your hunting locations without bumping deer? All of these questions may reveal that our season could have been better from a deer hunting perspective. So what if you're unhappy with how your season went? If that's you, it just might be time for a hunting property tune-up. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about evaluating your hunting property and when it might be time to call in a consultant. Sam has year of experience with on-site whitetail hunting property consultation and provides top-tier habitat and hunting plans to his clients. Over the years, Sam has learned what works to attract and hold deer, and to influence their movement across your hunting property. Whether you just bought a new property, lease ground that you can manipulate, or have hunted the same 40 acres for decades, Sam can help take your deer hunting to the next level. Tune in to hear how Sam evaluates his hunting season, how he scouts his property once the season is over, and how he designs hunting properties to provide excellent hunting for his clients. There are many guys out there who kill big deer every year. Some have access to primo ground. Some are able to afford expensive outfitters. Some are just plain lucky. And some, like the guest on this week's episode, simply put their nose down and put in the work. Today's guest is Ethan Escue. Ethan hails from West Virginia, but after a cross country move last summer, he found himself with very little time to find new ground and new bucks to hunt. His dedication and hard work paid off with FOUR mature bucks. In this episode, Ethan shares how it all went down, some of what he learned, and why glassing is such an integral part of his scouting.
With mid-December comes one undeniable fact: for most across the whitetail's range, it's the late season. Even folks who cling to hope for second rut activity must now pivot and return to the basics of food, bed, and travel in between. While late season hunting can be as simple as food + cover = deer, there is some nuance to it. So in this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles about their late season deer hunting strategy. There's still a lot of season left. But for many of us, the passing of the rut means it's time to return to the real world. Work, family, holidays, and all those obligations we neglected in October and early November now demand our attention and we simply can't spend the time in the woods like we did earlier in the year. The season isn't over, but it's a great time to reflect on what you've learned, and how you've grown as a deer hunter. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles about lessons learned the hard way from their rutcations. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles about their plans and strategies for hunting the rut. Ahhh... Sweet November. Time for those cagey bucks to blindly follow does into range, practically asking to be shot, right? Well... it's complicated. The rut may smile on you and you may be in the deer, or you may be just off the action and wondering if deer even exist. Aaaahhhh, sweet November is upon us! The rut will soon cure our every woe, and whitetail bucks will throw caution to the wind and run circles around our stands just waiting for us to take a shot at them… right? While the rut can be the best of the year to arrow a mature buck, this is no time to take it easy. In fact, increased buck movement should motivate whitetail hunters to work even harder to make sure they're in the right place at the right time.In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Tony Peterson about how Tony approaches hunting the rut. For Tony, scouting is critical as he wants to put himself in a high odds spot that gives him the confidence that a buck he's after will swing through. The guys discuss what kinds of things Tony focuses on during the rut, how much things like buck sign and hunting pressure play into his strategy, and why it's crucial to keep moving if you're not on the action. Opening day is in the rear view and for many, early season aspirations have turned to broken dreams. Now the deer movement seems to have dried up in all of our tried and true spots. What happened? Is this the (cue the ominous music) OCTOBER LULL?! Well, yes and no. Studies Show that deer movement increases throughout the month of October with no decrease. But the experience of many hunters is that deer sightings by mid October have slowed to a trickle. What's going on here? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn, Jake Hendrickson, and Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about the dreaded (or nonexistent) October Lull. The guys talk about what goes into hunters' perception of a lull in deer movement and how they would adjust to target a mature buck during the middle of October. It's your state's archery opener. You make the long hike back to a secluded spot where you never run into people. You know there's a big buck in the area, and that you have a good chance of running into him if you play your cards right. As you ascend the tree, you all of a sudden hear someone yelling to you. Your heart sinks as you realize there's another hunter already setup 50 yards from your tree. What do you do ? This, and many situations like it, happen all the time when hunting land that we don't control. The ability to adapt and overcome is essential for success on pressured land. But being adaptable is a skill that is honed, not one that necessarily comes easy. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Hepler about adapting your hunting plans and strategy when the unexpected happens. The guys touch on public land etiquette, trail camera strategy, woodsmanship, and knowing when you're on the X and when you're just out of the game. But is one really better than the other? Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and both can afford you a great time chasing whitetails! In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about Greg's take on hunting public vs private land. Greg is a Habitat Consultant with Whitetail Partners. As a Habitat Consultant, Greg spends time working with landowners helping them improve their property and their hunting. How much thought have you put into your camo system heading into the season? Sure you've got your treestands dialed in, you know how to get that saddle feeling just right, you've shot your bow and have your pack filled with just the right gadgets. But your camo is some of the most important gear you bring into the woods with you. It's often responsible for you spending more time on stand or heading back to the truck. That means it's often the one thing that had, or didn't have, you in the stand when the buck walked through. So, how much thought have you put into your camo system this year?In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Nate Sellers of Huntworth and Average Jack Archery about Huntworth's camo lineup and archery gear. Hunting season starts just next month for many in the whitetail's range. Stands are being hung, velvet pics are rolling in, and hit lists are being built. Well Nate Thomas from the Missouri Woods & Water podcast has been successful doing just that for a number of years on the small parcels he hunts. Though the deer aren't necessarily living on Nate's farms, he's still found a way to build his season around targeting top tier bucks. Right now, much of the whitetail's range is experiencing pretty significant drought conditions. Whitetail destination states such as Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri are among the worst hit. This will certainly affect ag production, food plots, mast production, and even browse. If the drought continues into the fall, these conditions will create a difficult hunting season for many. Late July/early August is a great time to do some digital scouting and hang some stands. Understanding thermals and their impact on wind currents can help you take your scouting and stand sight selection to the next level. Thermals can make or break a hunt. But thermals can be tough to understand and predict. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Eric Ives of Red Bearded Predators for a little thermals 101. While saddle hunting has been around for a long time, the resurgence in its popularity recently had many asking the question, Is saddle hunting just a fad? While it's not for everyone, most deer hunters could benefit tremendously from having a tree saddle as another tool in the belt. They're undoubtedly lighter, quieter, and some argue safer than a tree stand. And for many, they can also make you a more effective and efficient hunter. Food plots... all the rage just a few years ago, there is perhaps no other deer hunting tool that promises as much for the hunter as a food plot. One that is cheaper, easier, better for the environment and the critters that live on your ground, and will likely help you avoid many of the pitfalls of some food plotting methods? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Dr. Grant Woods about using the Release Process for better food plots, increased soil health, and bigger deer. Dr. Woods has been working on the Release Process and has perfected his methods as well as the blends he likes to use for his area.
