Thomas Mlsna, founder of Untamed Ambition, joins the podcast to discuss the importance of trail cameras in hunting preparation. He emphasizes the need to be intentional with camera setups and to use them to collect information and build theories about deer behavior. He also highlights the significance of wind, pressure, food, and timing in understanding deer movement. Thomas and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the value of pressure as a tool and the importance of social interaction among deer. They also touch on the concept of creating high-value environments to attract and hold deer on a property. The conversation focuses on the importance of cover and consistency in reducing pressure on deer. The speakers discuss how deer stack up in areas with consistent human activity and how cover provides a sense of security. They also touch on the significance of topography as a form of cover. The conversation then shifts to the role of food plots and the importance of variation in food type and composition. They emphasize the need to understand how deer relate to different types of food and cover. The speakers also discuss the importance of observation and flexibility in hunting success, as well as the role of wind in deer movement. They highlight the value of training the brain to notice important details in the environment and the benefits of scouting during the hunting season. The conversation concludes with the importance of visualization, theory-building, and continuous learning in hunting. Takeaways: Trail cameras only tell you where you should have been, not where you should be. Trail cameras only tell you what is happening directly in front of them. Pressure is anything that causes stress or discomfort on a deer to a level that it's going to change their behavior. There are really only two things that reduce pressure on deer. It is cover and consistency in pressure or lack thereof. Topography is the greatest form of cover there is. Variation in food value, a variation in food type composition is really important.   Social Links https://whitetaillandscapes.com/ https://www.facebook.com/whitetaillandscapes/ https://www.instagram.com/whitetail_landscapes/?hl=en https://www.theuntamedambition.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 196 Details Expert Tips for Hunters: Trail Camera Placement & Easy Grilled Chicken Optimal Trail Camera Placement: Hot Temperatures Trail cameras have become a staple for hunters, with some even leaving them up year-round. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or just getting started, proper trail camera placement is crucial, especially in hot temperatures. Our Bend Field Staffer, Travis Theel—Guide, Outfitter, and host of the YouTube Channel Buckstorm—shares his expert tips on where to place trail cameras during warmer months. Why Placement Matters: During fall and winter, deer and elk travel patterns differ significantly from those in the warmer months. Understanding these patterns is essential for successful game tracking. Key Tips for Hot Weather Trail Camera Placement: Near Water Sources: In hot weather, animals are drawn to water sources. Place your trail cameras near ponds, streams, and other water bodies to capture more wildlife activity. Shaded Areas: Animals seek out cooler, shaded areas during peak heat. Position cameras under tree canopies or shaded trails to increase your chances of capturing game. Food Sources: Identify where natural food sources are abundant. Animals often visit these areas early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Game Trails: Look for well-worn paths and trails used by animals. These trails often lead to water or food sources and are prime locations for camera placement. Preparing for Hunting Season: Gear Testing: Test your clothing and equipment at least 30 days before hunting season. Wear your gear during training sessions to ensure comfort and functionality. Physical Training: Train with your gear to adapt to the terrain. This helps prevent soreness and ensures you are prepared for the physical demands of hunting. Conclusion: Proper trail camera placement in hot temperatures can significantly improve your chances of tracking deer and elk. Remember to adjust camera locations as temperatures change.    Follow Feature Guest: Travis Theel  Travis Theel, Buckstorm Hunts Guide & Outfitter https://www.buckstormhunts.com/ WATCH https://www.youtube.com/@buckstormsd Delish, Easy Grilled Chicken Recipe: Lemonade Marinade Grilled Chicken Introduction: Looking for a delicious and easy grilled chicken recipe? Mix the Marinade: In a gallon-sized Ziploc bag or sealable container, combine the thawed lemonade concentrate, soy sauce, garlic powder, and seasoned salt. For an extra kick, add black pepper to taste. Marinate the Chicken: Add the thawed chicken to the marinade. Seal the bag or container and mix well, ensuring the chicken is evenly coated. They provide insights and advice on navigating the real estate market, share tips for finding equipment for home renovation projects, and discuss how to maximize the effectiveness of trail cameras. Join them for an informative and entertaining conversation that covers various aspects related to these topics. • Experts advise buying what you can afford and what aligns with your goals, ensuring financial stability during turbulent times. • Witnessing a project come to life in a day is a truly amazing experience. • Using an external power source for cell cameras reduces the need for frequent battery changes. • Delivering accurate and consistent arrow performance with customizable options. • Jake prefers fixed broadheads like the G five Striker and K two lictor for hunting. • He hunts both from preset stands and mobile setups, depending on the season and circumstances. • Interest rates are the highest they've been in 20 years, but the real estate market is still booming due to limited inventory. • The land market is fueled by cash purchases, especially for tillable tracks, which are not as impacted by the stock market. • Smaller parcels continue to be in high demand, but 1031 exchange money is now the minority among buyers. • Using professional equipment for a renovation project can save time and yield better results. • Understanding that false triggers are caused by a change in infrared radiation, not by the camera being faulty. • The addition of fletching options provides enhanced arrow stability and accuracy. • Taking the guesswork out of arrow selection, this simplified process allows for a confident and effective hunting experience.  https://linktr.ee/TheLandPodcast https://linktr.ee/exodustrailcamera https://bit.ly/TheDeerGearPodcast

#298 - How Steve Sherk Uses Summertime Trail Camera Data to Kill a Big Woods Buck Every Fall!

In today's episode, we have a familiar face back in the office, Steve Sherk from Sherk's Guide Service. Steve spends more time in the woods in one year than most hunters do in 10 years. Steve runs over 250 trail cameras in the Pennsylvania big woods every season has has learned a few things about summertime buck movement and how it coorelates to hunting season movement. We discuss: Late summer excursions by bucks provide insights into their fall range and food sources. Cutting tracks in conjunction with camera footage can help identify specific deer locations. Move around and shift camera positions to keep up with changing browse patterns. Stay updated on changes in habitat and browse sources, especially in public land areas that are constantly evolving. Lack of moisture can result in lower quality browse and affect the production of fall food sources. Be aware of the feeding patterns and the one-time opportunity to eat certain plants. Monitor antler growth and look for clues in weather patterns, such as increased moisture, which can spur growth. Factors like precipitation and weather conditions can influence antler growth in deer. Video mode on trail cameras offers more information than photo mode. Maintaining trail cameras during the summer is crucial to ensure they are not obscured by vegetation and remain functional. Monitoring food sources, like acorns and apple crops, can help predict deer movement during hunting season. Spend time glassing young clear cuts, as they can provide excellent food sources and attract deer. It's official, the deer season preparations are on! The anticipation is high as velvet photos are strolling in, but what does that actually mean for deer season? Most folks get too amped up to only realize that these patterns often end right about the time season opens up. So this week, we discuss the difference between what you see during the summer versus the fall and how you can still plan successfully for fall time patterns. Testosterone in bucks ramps up during the later portion of August and increases throughout the rut, only then to decrease and signal to shed antlers during winter. This increase during August breaks up the bachelor groups therefore redistributing bucks across the landscape and not all huddled up around one single food source. This makes what you see during summer not translate well to bow season. So, we caution everyone to say, be careful what you see and how you prepare right now, because it is all subject to change! Take a listen and enjoy the velvet photos rolling in!

On this episode of the Exodus Podcast, Chad and Jake are back in the studio to discuss summer hunting strategies. We talk about using trail cameras to gather inventory, elk vs whitetail, and stress the importance of preparation and enjoying the process. We discuss:  Ohio black bear sighting Summer Trail Camera checklist Check batteries, clear memory cards, and practice scent control Summer is a great time to set up trail cameras, especially in bedding areas and scrapes Be cautious of putting cameras on dead trees in swampy areas as they may attract more insects Fawn recruitment: obtaining early photos of fawns to predict peak breeding dates and plan for stand placement, with the option of hanging multiple sets for different winds. Ants can wreck havoc on trail cameras, but using ant repellent and placing cameras away from high-traffic areas can reduce the likelihood of damage. Avoid putting cameras on dead trees Summer scouting can include marking down agricultural fields and bedding areas. Take inventory of the deer in bachelor groups during the summer Green soybeans are the best food source for deer Access routes and wind directions are essential factors to consider when picking tree's for stands Elk or Deer this fall? A new Exodus arrow launch is imminent And So Much More!   Don't wait to take advantage of our 8 Year Anniversary Sale, inventory is limited and discounts like this only happen twice a year.
