E432 Inner Voice – A Heartfelt Chat with Dr. Foojan and Josh Tomeoni In this powerful episode of Inner Voice, Dr. Foojan Zeine sits down with Josh Tomeoni, founder of Ex-Derelict and author of The Gospel of an Ex-Derelict: Fight. Fail. Rebuild. Josh brings a rare blend of lived experience and professional insight as a 19-year fiduciary financial planner turned men's coach, working with high-performing men navigating divorce, identity loss, and major life transitions. The conversation opens with a deep exploration of how divorce and trauma place every person at a crossroads—a choice between the path of health or the path of destruction. Josh challenges common gender stereotypes, explaining that while men and women don't choose different paths, they often cope in different ways. Men tend to numb through work, sex, substances, or avoidance, while women may rely on relationships or even therapy in ways that can become ineffective if true growth stalls. As the episode unfolds, Dr. Foojan and Josh explore neuroscience-based differences in emotional processing, the role of culture and attachment, and how comfort zones—work for men, relationships for women—can either support healing or quietly sabotage it. They emphasize that healing requires active engagement, accountability, and results—not passive coping or endless talking without progress. Josh shares his personal story of divorce, spiritual awakening, and the moment he realized that avoiding pain only made it return stronger and more destructive. This realization shaped both of his books and his mission to help men rebuild wealth, masculinity, purpose, and legacy in their second act of life. In the second half of the episode, Josh introduces his latest book, The Gospel of an Ex-Derelict: Fight. Fail. Rebuild., a powerful blend of memoir and practical guidance designed to help men integrate mental, emotional, spiritual, and financial clarity. Rather than promoting surface-level fixes like money or physical appearance, Josh focuses on identity reconstruction, intentional masculinity, and purposeful living after loss. The conversation concludes with a profound reminder: the only way forward is through the pain. Avoiding discomfort only guarantees deeper suffering later. Growth, healing, and strength come from facing hard truths directly—and doing the work when it matters most. ⏱️ CHAPTER TIMESTAMPS (CLICKABLE) 00:00 – Welcome to Inner Voice with Dr. Foojan 02:26 – Meet Josh Tomeoni: Ex-Derelict & Men's Coach 05:52 – Divorce from the Male Perspective 07:14 – Spiritual Awakening After Divorce 08:30 – Numbing Pain Through Sex, Substances & Avoidance 10:29 – Why Men Feel Alone After Divorce 12:02 – The Traps Men Fall Into During Divorce 13:04 – Do Women Heal Faster Than Men? Step into Episode 190 of On the Delo as David DeLorenzo sits down with longtime friend and Arizona hospitality pro Tiffany for a candid conversation about life behind the bar, responsible service, mental health, and launching a new industry-driven concept in downtown Mesa. From nearly two decades in restaurants and bars to opening “The Walk In” while navigating new motherhood, Tiffany pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to care for guests, protect your team, and still protect your own energy. If you're in hospitality, own a bar or restaurant, or just love the Arizona beer community, this one gives you real-world perspective and practical takeaways you can use right now.Hear how Tiffany went from a 19-year-old hostess at Native New Yorker in Tempe to a respected leader in Arizona's craft beer scene, shaping programs at spots like Cornish Pasty, Postino Gilbert, and The Sleepy Whale. She breaks down the psychology of reading guests, the art and “mama bear” finesse of cutting someone off, and why hospitality that feels like family is the only way to stand out when people are more selective than ever about where they spend their money. The conversation also dives into how therapy, boundaries, lifting, early mornings, and porch coffee help her manage burnout and stay grounded in an industry that often expects you to be “on” no matter what's happening in your own life. You'll also get an inside look at The Walk In, the new “grandma's basement” bar Tiffany is opening in a historic basement space in downtown Mesa with partners Chris Rogers and Thad Krosky. Think cozy couches, wood paneling, beer neons, beer, natural wine, vinyl nights, and a serious non-alcoholic program designed for people who want the full experience without the booze. Tiffany shares the real startup journey: losing their first dream Tempe location, regrouping with help from community and a strong broker, finding the former Sun Devil Liquor basement and its old cellar “relics,” and deciding they don't have to settle for anything less than the right space.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 2:40) Saturday Morning Vibes and Episode 190 Intro(2:41 - 5:56) Tiffany's Start in Hospitality: Native New Yorker, ASU, and Falling in Love with the Industry(5:57 - 12:40) Psychology Behind the Bar: Reading Guests, Responsible Service, and Care Over Transactions(12:41 - 18:21) Arizona Beer Community: Hospitality, Storytelling, and Surviving a Changing Market(18:22 - 23:58) Building The Walk In: Concept, Partners, Mental Health Focus, and Learning the Business Side(23:59 - 30:38) Losing a Location, Finding a Basement: Tempe Setbacks, Downtown Mesa, and Not Settling(30:39 - 37:56) Non-Alcoholic Programs, Mental Wellness, Therapy, and Coping Without the Crutch of Alcohol(37:57 - 43:21) Motherhood, Support Systems, Arizona Roots, and Raising Riley in Hospitality(43:22 - 47:24) Rapid Fire: Music, Tattoos, Aliens, Gold Shows, and Strength Inside and Outside the Bar(47:25 - 48:39) What's Next: Copper State Beer Festival and Built Different Community Invite

Phones and AI aren't going anywhere, so the goal isn't to ban them, but to help our kids integrate them wisely. In this episode, we'll explore how constant connectivity impacts a child's ability to focus, plan, regulate emotions, and problem-solve. We'll look at why kids and teens are especially vulnerable to the “instant relief” loop that phones provide, and how AI can both support and hinder their growing brains. Most importantly, we'll talk about what parents can do: how to set boundaries that actually stick, how to preserve core executive functioning skills, and how to help your child build the resilience they'll need in a world where technology is always within reach.Jennifer's Takeaways:Impact of Cell Phones and AI on Kids' Focus and Problem-Solving Skills (00:00)Challenges of Multitasking with Multiple Screens (02:46)Balancing AI Use with Critical Thinking Skills (03:50)The Role of Boredom in Developing Creativity (05:47)Teaching Kids to Use AI as a Coach, Not a Crutch (07:05)The Future of AI in Education and Parenting (08:09)Meet Jennifer KolariJennifer Kolari is the host of the “Connected Parenting” weekly podcast and the co-host of “The Mental Health Comedy” podcast. Discover why solo episodes simplify production by eliminating scheduling coordination follow-up emails and waiting on guest availability making process faster lighter and more agile, how monthly recording made every episode feel like starting from scratch while more frequent recording accelerates learning curve building voice confidence faster, the strategy of sprinkling your perspectives into guest conversations instead of just asking questions then handing microphone over, and why balance between solo episodes building your voice and guest interviews providing networking benefits prevents borrowed authority trap while maintaining audience reach. We've talked a lot about AI this season, but this week we're discussing its place in Education with one of our own, Ari Moreland. Artificial Intelligence is reshaping classrooms across the country. From the White House to the schoolhouse, a new challenge is encouraging schools and organizations to embrace AI. And Indiana has updated graduation requirements that now emphasize STEM skills. We'll also review how tech giants like Google are looking to dominate the space with tools like NotebookLM, AI-powered features in Google Classroom, and new capabilities coming straight to Chromebooks. But is AI truly enhancing education, or is it taking away from the learning process? How do we draw the line between AI as a helpful study partner and AI as a shortcut? Join us as we unpack what's happening, what it means for students, parents, and teachers, and where AI could take education next.

You've probably seen it all over social media GLP's, and maybe even wondered if a GLP-1 medication could be the answer you've been looking for. But here's the thing: while these meds can be powerful tools, they're not magic, and they're definitely not meant to replace the habits that actually create lasting change. In this episode, we're unpacking what GLP-1s really are, who they were designed for, and how to protect your health if you choose to use one. Here's what we're diving into: What GLP-1s are and how they actually work in your body The medical conditions they were intended to treat (and what they don't fix) The risks of using them as a shortcut — including the yo-yo cycle of rapid loss and regain Why protecting your muscle with protein + resistance training is non-negotiable How to use a “quieter appetite” season as a reset, not a bypass The questions to ask yourself before deciding if this tool is right for you If you've been curious about GLP-1s, this episode will give you clarity, context, and the honest truth about what they can — and can't — do for your body and your goals.

Hi Loyal Readers. Thank you for opening this week's issue of Article Club.Today's issue is dedicated to a great conversation I had with Piers Gelly, author of this month's featured article, “What Happened When I Tried to Replace Myself with ChatGPT in My English Classroom.” The conversation was triply great because Prof. Gelly, who teaches at the University of Virginia, invited two of his students featured in the essay — Camille Villalobos and Max Goldberg — to join us.The result is a thought-provoking discussion about college students' perspectives on artificial intelligence, particularly when a curious professor engages them genuinely (rather than complaining, banning the use of AI, sticking their head in the sand, and secretly wishing we could turn back time to the Golden Age of Bluebooks).I hope that you'll read the article, listen to the interview, and join our discussion on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT. We'll meet on Zoom, say hi, and then dive deep into the article. You can sign up below; it'd be great to have you there.I don't want to give too much away, because I want you to listen to the conversation, but I must share what I appreciated most. It was how thoughtfully Cam and Max talked about their experiences taking Prof. Gelly's class, as well as how their points of view on artificial intelligence changed along the way.Not only are Cam and Max brilliant, but what's also abundantly clear is that Prof. Gelly cares deeply about his students. They're at the center of his essay. You'll get a similar sense when you listen to the interview. Rather than making grandiose philosophical conclusions about the state of artificial intelligence in education, Prof. Gelly is curious, vulnerable, and dedicated to listening to his students' views, as well as pushing them. When you engage your students — as Prof. Gelly does — you gain nuance. For example, at the beginning of the class, Cam had been a liberal user of ChatGPT. By the end, she maligned AI as a “crutch” and vowed never to use it again. And her thinking has shifted even more, as you'll hear in the interview. On the other hand, Max did not leave the class with the same perspective as Cam. He sees valid uses for ChatGPT. But his experience shifted his sentiments as well. Here he shares what worries him: I would say the thing that concerns me most is people who use [AI] for everything. And I don't just mean like coursework, but things like planning their schedules and asking it questions and having it do, like, basic, basic problems. I think that people need to be able to do some of that on their own.I hope you enjoy the interview. Once again, huge appreciation to Prof. Gelly, Cam, and Max for generously saying yes to Article Club.An invitation to our discussion on September 28I warmly invite you to participate in our discussion on Sunday, September 28, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT. We'll meet on Zoom. You can sign up below, it's free.Thank you for reading and listening to this week's issue. Hope you liked it.

Join Jeff Malec for a special solo "6-pack" episode where he tackles six topics on his mind during the summer podcast break. Jeff starts by examining the challenging trend following drawdown that's been plaguing the markets, sharing insights from his 25 years in the space and why this one feels different. He dives into AI's growing role in finance and education, questioning whether it's becoming a crutch rather than a multiplier and pondering its potential economic implications. Jeff makes the case for smart leverage as a diversification tool, challenging common investor misconceptions about risk management. The episode wraps up with his personal rants on everything from wind turbines (not windmills!) to highway etiquette. We don't really block people. We block parts of ourselves we don't know how to face. Every time you press “block,” you're engaging in a ritual—one that masquerades as empowerment but may, in truth, reflect a deeper spiritual amnesia.

"How are you using AI in med school?" That's the question Dave posed to his co-hosts this week. Near-M3s Fallon Jung and Amanda Litka and almost-PA3 Julie Vuong discuss AI-fueled study sessions, and Dave points out a Google tool that turns docs into knowledge. They talk about what helps, what haunts, and what might accidentally erase their clinical instincts. Meanwhile, Fallon admits to looking to a robot to plan a bachelorette party. Amanda wants to ditch the white coat. And strong mints and clementines are the secret to surviving 3AM bowel resections. Also on the docket: what they've learned in their first few months seeing patients, OB night shift scaries, and which specialist they'd rather be stranded on an island with. Listeners: do you use AI to get you through school? How? Sound off at https://theshortcoat.com/tellus!
Are you struggling with how to stop using alcohol as a crutch when it's all you've ever known for comfort, confidence, or escape? When alcohol becomes the go-to for numbing pain, soothing nerves, or simply making it through the day, letting it go can feel like losing a lifeline. In Mark's session: Exploring childhood trauma and emotional suppression The connection between neurodiversity and alcohol reliance Why alcohol became a long-term emotional safety blanket How to stop using alcohol as a crutch and find new emotional tools Body scan practices to access suppressed feelings Visualization and the emotion wheel as tools for emotional insight The difference between masking emotions vs. processing them Recognizing progress even when it doesn't look like expected healing Finding alternative ways to self-soothe and cope and more… In Glenn's session: Growing up in a home where alcohol was a symbol of adulthood Using beer to manage social anxiety and introversion The rise in drinking during isolation and how it became a daily habit How to stop using alcohol as a crutch for connection and calm The emotional highs and lows of early alcohol-free living Discovering joy in ordinary moments and accepting melancholy Letting go of perfection in mindfulness and meditation Rewriting social rules and embracing introversion Building confidence through small steps and self-acceptance and other topics… Hayley Scherders is a certified TNM Coach with training from the Canadian Addiction and Mental Health Association. In this deep and often humorous debate, Barry Loewer of Rutgers and Eddy Chen of UC San Diego clash over the very nature of physical reality.
