Week 2: Maps, E-Scouting, and Defining Spots Where will you park? How will you access it? Will you need hip boots, waders (check waders for holes) , canoe, boat etc? List out the spots where you saw sign in the spring or last year. Are they worth revisiting? What part of the season are those spots? You don't want to waste time hunting next to a wide-open blown down field or cattail marsh for late season Pressure When will people be out there? How will the deer shift? On his episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is once again joined by the one and only Tony Peterson to discuss their crazy lives, and e-scouting. Not sure why Tony keeps coming back as a guest but he keeps "YES". This is great, because Dan can't find anyone else to hop on the show. The guys talks about Tonys mental state and how it is affected by the hate-filled death metal he listens to, how horrible of a softball coach he is, and what it's like being managed by someone who is younger and less experienced than him. Dan expresses his opinion on Mark Kenyon's facial hair, practicing baseball with his son, and how many dead bodies they each have seen. Then, for the last 20 mins of the show the guys take a deep dive in to how they approach e-scouting public public for out-of-state hunts. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is riding solo discussing what the month of June looks like amidst hunting season. June is a tough month; it's not that he doesn't want to be immersed with preparation for next year, but at the moment it's difficult to devote the time. It's a month to be caught between reflecting on a successful season and how to prepare for the next. Fortunately, 2023 was very successful from the standpoint of filling tags, so how can it get much better? With life strings pulling in multiple directions, Mitch takes the time to list out some personal hunting goals he has, chooses which ones he plans to attack this year, and how he plans to stay focused on them while also being present at home. Bear hunting has become a priority in fall, and he discusses the areas he has room for improving his scouting and successful bear hunting. He reads through some of his notes he took from last season and discusses the changes he plans to make E-Scouting, road-scouting, trail cameras, and pure boot leather covering ground. This gradual build-up during the summer months will hopefully lay a foundation for a successful fall. Lastly, he touches on his weapon of choice - flintlock muzzleloader. He discusses a concept to institute in a summer practice scheme which includes load development and off-hand shooting to bring to the field this fall. Learn more about your ad choices.
On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan breaks down what he looks for in hunting spots while e-scouting public land. Recently, Dan found out that he finally drew a Kansas archery tag. He has never hunted Kansas, so he is starting from scratch when it comes to finding places to hunt. Because this is an out of state hunt, Dan is going to rely heavily on using digital maps to e-scout the public properties before he hunts them. You will hear what specific terrain features he is looking for, how may points of access he would like those properties to have, and one of the biggest contributing factors... food sources. As one prepares for a western elk hunt, it's important to continue to zero in from a 30,000 foot view down to a more microscopic view of what is transpiring within a particular region or area that has been outlined as the area to hunt. What layers are important? What are some non-hunting apps that can help? Where is the recreational hiking pressure coming from? What are some non-web based tools that I can use in my prep? In this episode, Jacob shares some tools that can help you answer those and other questions as you prepare for your trek out west. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Believe it or not, in 4 short months it will be elk season. So, where does one start to e-scout an entire state of huntable elk units with a general tag? Where are the elk, what terrain features should one look for, what about other hunters and general pressure, what platforms are best for e-scouting, how does one identify elevations for elk, etc. In today's episode, Jacob shares his perspective on those and other questions pertaining to the e-scouting and planning process. On today's episode I'm joined by Tim Smoke of Kentucky. We dive deep into how Tim has been successful year after year on public ground. Why Tim's background in the military has given him a tactical edge when using topo maps to dissect areas. How many times e-scouting can be great but boots on the ground really gives you the best edge. Why it's important to hunt public just for ability to have more access to hone in on certain bucks. We get into a ton of other great topics and I'm sure you guys will really enjoy this one! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/runandgunpodcast/support

In this episode, Colin Is joined by well-renowned Michigan whitetail bow hunter John Eberhart. John discusses how he breaks down both public and private land hunting locations. John goes into detail about what to look for when scouting these areas, and how to hunt them with many outside factors that are continually changing. John talks about the Importance of Security cover and details how to hunt these bedding areas, and how many times he hunts them before moving to a new location. Colin discusses with John how security cover can be too thick, and deer will not want to use those areas. Colin Gives an example of similar situations on personal and client properties. John gives an example of a property he was scouting for another landowner and how important the surrounding properties play into your hunting success. John goes into some things he uses E-scouting for, and also the things that cannot be seen just by using E-scouting. Colin talks about situations where boots-on-the-ground scouting or consulting is critical for a client's success and his ability to give solid recommendations to a hunter/landowner. Mark Livesay is the founder of Treeline Pursuits and the creator of Treeline Academy. In general, Mark is a “all in” type of person as seen through his triathlon career (10 Ironman finishes), the formation of his event production company Ultramax Sports, and most significantly in his life-long hunting pursuits. He spent his first two elk hunting decades traveling from Missouri to the western states. He would definitely qualify as a serial elk hunter, pursuing elk in multiple western states, and spending 75+ days in the backcountry each season. His 30 years of elk hunting have given him a thorough understanding of the challenges associated with E-Scouting and finding elk. Recently, he has been featured as a guest on a growing list of hunting's best podcasts, including The Rich Outdoors, Eastmans Elevated, Hunt Harvest Health, The Gritty Podcast, Elk Shape, Backcountry Rookies, Publically Challenged, Shoot'n The Bull, and many others. His E-Scouting podcasts on the Rich Outdoors were among the podcast's most downloaded episodes in 2019. He has published several elk hunting strategy articles and has been invited to present E-Scouting tactics at the Western Hunting Summit and Elk Shape Camps. Mark and his wife, Amy, moved to Montana in 2016 and have never looked back. They share their Missoula home with their two children, Eli and Emme, and a gaggle of pack llamas. The growing herd of Ccara pack llamas is now a vital part of his public land, do-it-yourself hunting arsenal.
