Alima Radio is an independent mix show broadcasting out of Siargao Island. Episodes feature different collaborations with various artists, companies, surfers, DJs and more. Anything from curated surf soundtracks to full takeovers, Alima Radio covers all genres with absolutely no limits.
This Episode was recorded live for the Hello Stranger Sessions in Los Angeles. Although Exile had already made a name for himself in the left coast hip-hop scene, both as part of the duo Emanon (with Aloe Blacc) and by producing tracks for Jurassic 5, Kardinal Offishall, and Mobb Deep, among others, it wasn't until the release of his 2007 album with rapper Blu, called Below the Heavens, that the Los Angeles-based producer began receiving attention and praise outside the West Coast community. Born Aleksander Manfredi in the late '70s, Exile grew up listening to both the traditional Italian music his grandfather played and bands like the Sex Pistols and LL Cool J. It was, in fact, with the gift of LL Cool J's 1985 debut, Radio, that he first set his sights on hip-hop, and soon he was delving into beatmaking himself, using a cassette player until he was able to save enough money for a primitive sampler and a four-track. When he was 18, he met then 16-year-old Aloe Blacc, a fellow Angeleno, and the two started the group Emanon, which released a series of singles in the mid- to late '90s. In 2002, the duo released the EP Anon & On, followed by The Waiting Room in 2005. It was around this same time that Exile began working with Blu, whom he had known for a couple of years, more seriously, both on his own MC-studded solo album, Dirty Science (2006), and on the proper duet, Below the Heavens, both released on Sound in Color. The album, which was praised nearly universally, brought Exile's Dilla-meets-Pete Rock-meets-DJ Shadow beats into the hip-hop spotlight, and also set the stage for a proper solo release. Signed to progressive L.A. electronica label Plug Research, Exile released the full-length Radio, which was comprised solely of a year's worth of samples off L.A. radio stations, in the winter of 2009. Remixes and reworks based on the album were collected a year later on AM/FM. ~ Marisa BrownIG: @exileradioIG: @hellostrangerla

"We believe life is in the experience. Exploring the world not only inspires us, it gives us a greater appreciation and a deeper education of the world around us. Residing in Santa Barbara, California, DJ Javier is a hybrid of graphic designer and artist, who blends together scribbles, symbols, doodles, and anecdotes to assemble multilayered, interconnected works that draw inherent inspiration from the ebb and flow of his West Coast home. DJ approaches his art through the lens and perspective of design, which yields an aesthetic made up of free-flowing and wide expressionist swipes of color, bold graphics, and intricate renderings of characters and text. DJ’s animated works pay homage to the roguishly creative spirit of the countercultures that raised him within art, surfing, music, and the blended inspirations of Southern California. Largely inspired by things outside of just art, like his own memories and experiences, DJ creates authentic works of art and design that not only carry emotive connections to the things he loves, but also that possess a symbolic system of meaning and associations that he hopes piques different interests in different people.IG: @_djjavierIG: @bayansurfclubIG: @canto.visionWeb: canto.visionWeb: bayansurf.clubMixed by: Free the Robots

A few blocks down Sunset Blvd from Downtown Los Angeles lies Echo Park Lake, arguably one of the top surf destinations in all of Southern California. Picking up swells from all points on the compass, a direct East sets the point on fire - Lotus Point, that is. So named for the lotus plants that bloom in the Spring and act like a fresh water kelp, keeping the chop down when the warm Santa Ana’s blow down from The Valley. We’ve been making t-shirts and such here since 2012 and personally wear every shirt before it is sold. We also put them in a closed room and blast them with Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” for 45 minutes before they are shipped. We are Echo Park Surf Squad. "Nameless Direction Underground, Photographer and Filmmaker, Jack Coleman does not adhere to normalcy and lives a free existence based out of Newport Beach, CA. Born in the days before digital, almost forgotten now, when there was more of a process to taking a photo. You had to be sure. No instant gratification. Jack has an affinity with this process. Coleman’s approach to filmmaking Intermixes surfing with ambient going's on, we can hear the ‘click-click’ of the super eight as film speeds through the gears, exposing the emulsion and capturing as yet undisclosed images of what’s going on. I know that sound. Many do or did. Not a new sound, yet it’s one that sets off a chain reaction of emotions. It’s an anchor in the past. Conjuring up images from old. A mental aphrodisiac that evokes childhood past. It would be an understatement to say that Coleman has a knack for nostalgia and creating his own worlds. His films are a pure visceral experience, leaning heavily on color filters, speed manipulation, and psychedelic soundtracks. It’s clearly a more deliberate art than a simple home video.
