Haldane graduate bringing quartet to St. Mary's Robert Freimark is best known for two things: his complicated jazz piano compositions and his hair, which is so long and straight that it serves as curtains over his face when he plays. The look resembles that of Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman. "Someone told me that recently, but I had no idea who he is," says Freimark, 18, a 2025 Haldane High School graduate who is studying music at William Patterson University in New Jersey. "It makes me more recognizable." On Saturday (May 9), Freimark will perform in Cold Spring as part of the Music at St. Mary's series with his quartet: Carter Stein on saxophone, Maria Kolesnik on drums and Gabriel Balado on bass (stepping in for Marcelo Díaz). Earlier this year, Freimark won a Young-Arts National Competition Award in jazz, one of 741 musicians selected from some 13,000 applicants. His goal is to make a living as a professional musician. He started playing piano at age 7, taking lessons in classical repertoire, but shifted to jazz when his teacher, Jesse Stecken at Forte Piano Studio in Beacon, encouraged him to improvise. A turning point, Freimark says, is when he nailed a solo arrangement of "Rhapsody in Blue" during his sophomore year at Haldane. Conversant with standard and more obscure repertoire, his style is subtle but sophisticated. His goal is to reel off any of hundreds of instrumental jams on the fly. "That's what being a jazz musician is, and I'm going through acute ear identification training," he says. "Another skill is listening and being able to identify chord changes on the spot, even if you don't know the song — 'ear-balling it,' as some people say." Freimark arranged a version of "My Favorite Things," adapting John Coltrane's sax rendition for piano, changing the time signature and delivering a straightforward groove. He can replicate and build on the style of odd-bird Thelonius Monk, whose wobbly, off-kilter phrasing shook up jazz in the 1950s and '60s. "Just You Wait," an original Freimark composition, which sounds like it's dredged from the classic Monk era, opens with a bebop-influenced passage in which the bass, played by Stecken on keyboard in a video shot at the Howland Cultural Center, doubles the piano's left hand through a few bars of Freimark's solo, then shifts into swinging, walking phrases to provide a launch pad for the pianist to modulate the timing and make other low-key modifications. "A bunch of notes came to me so fast; I figured I should write them down immediately," Freimark says. "From that draft, not much has changed. There are abstractions, but it still feels grounded." Reflecting the influence of his mother, Sandy McKelvey, a guitarist who is passionate about the music of Central and South America, Freimark also explores Latin Jazz, executing his feathery touch to "Soñando con Puerto Rico." On Saturday, he and his bandmates will perform an extended version of "Just You Wait," along with a mix of "songbook standards and compositions that are important to jazz musicians," he says. Though he began playing at a young age, Freimark never considered himself a prodigy. "There were always kids half my age who could play more difficult music," he says. "I'm just trying to do my own thing." St. Mary's Church is located at 1 Chestnut St. in Cold Spring. The concert, which begins at 2 p.m., is free, but donations for Music at St. Mary's are welcome.
Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #667 is another hour of visionary improvised acoustic played and sung live by The Gaea Star Band featuring Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, double flute, ukulele, acoustic guitar and mandolin, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and Native drum. Recorded at the end of April 2026 at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, today's hour begins with the sprightly, gentling rocking “Welcome New Life, Welcome Spring” a fantastical spring song with a soaring vocal from Mariam above throbbing Native drum, chiming ukulele and dancing piano. “Let's Revel In The Glory” continues today's joyful celebration of spring, an untamed, forest built on Mariam's wild, pagan mandolin and Bob's racing, circular, minimalist piano and “In Search Of The Yellow” is a compelling South Seas maritime tale driven by skipping congas, gentle acoustic guitar and Mariam's engrossing story told in melody. “Always Blossoming With Peaceful Joy” is another beautiful summer reverie with bittersweet piano and rich acoustic guitar setting up Mariam's gorgeous, soaring vocal. “If You Knew What Was In Your Heart” is another gentle rocker with a powerful, mantra-like, bluesy coda and “Queen Of Heaven” from Mariam's “Gaea Star Goddesses” LP is played tightly and with superb energy. “Let Me Love You” from the “Gaea Star Crystal” album is given a lilting, Latin treatment with fine acoustic guitar and vocals from Mariam and racing blues passages from Bob and “Twin Flame”, also from the “Gaea Star Goddesses” LP is presented in all its mystical, waltz-time starry splendor, featuring a darkling, midnight coda. Today's show finishes with an inspired Latin Jazz take on Mariam's minor blues “Standing Ones Of Peace” with white hot piano and throbbing Native drum setting up Mariam's powerful vocal. Playlist of the Show:[23:09] What'd I Say - Ray Charles[26:30] Early Summer - Ryo Fukui[28:52] Hymn to Freedom - Oscar PetersonAI建议的爵士乐育儿歌单(20月龄-36月龄)20个月:高保真钢琴触键(物理建模期) ● 曲目: Midnight Sugar (山本刚), C-Jam Blues (Red Garland), Linus and Lucy (Vince Guaraldi), Bag's Groove (MJQ) ● 深度分析: ○ 脑神经科学: 20个月的孩子,内耳耳蜗的**音调映射(Tonotopic map)**正在进行最后的物理微调。 1. Work Song (Nat Adderley) 2. Killer Joe (Benny Golson) 3. Blues in the Closet (Bud Powell) 4. 1. Moanin' (Art Blakey) 2. Song for My Father (Horace Silver) 3. The Sidewinder (Lee Morgan) 4. Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock) 5. 1. Aruarian Dance (Nujabes) 2. Luv(sic) Part 3 (Nujabes) 3. Waltz for Life Will Born (Uyama Hiroto) 4. Take Five (Dave Brubeck) 2. Unsquare Dance (Dave Brubeck) 3. Blue Rondo à la Turk (Dave Brubeck) 4. 1. Waltz for Debby (Bill Evans) 2. Bluesette (Toots Thielemans) 3. Alice in Wonderland (Bill Evans) 4. Up with the Lark (Bill Evans) ● 深度分析: ○ 脑神经科学: 三拍子会强烈刺激小脑的前庭系统。 1. The Girl from Ipanema (Stan Getz) 2. Wave (Antônio Carlos Jobim) 3. Desafinado (Stan Getz) 4. 1. So What (Miles Davis) 2. Maiden Voyage (Herbie Hancock) 3. Little Sunflower (Freddie Hubbard) 4. 1. My Funny Valentine (Chet Baker) 2. You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To (Art Pepper) 3. Autumn Leaves (Cannonball) 4. 1. Scrapple from the Apple (Charlie Parker) 2. A Night in Tunisia (Dizzy Gillespie) 3. Donna Lee (Charlie Parker) 4. Early Summer (Ryo Fukui) 2. Scenery (Ryo Fukui) 3. Blow Up (Isao Suzuki) 4. 1. L-O-V-E (Nat King Cole) 2. Cheek to Cheek (Fitzgerald & Armstrong) 3. Fly Me to the Moon (Sinatra) 4. How High the Moon (Ella Fitzgerald) ● 深度分析: ○ 脑神经科学: SSIR 假说(Shared Syntactic Integration Resource)指出,语言与音乐共享神经资源。 St. Thomas (Sonny Rollins) 2. Moritat (Sonny Rollins) 3. Cantaloop (Us3) 4. Mambo Inn (George Shearing) 2. Manteca (Dizzy Gillespie) 3. Afro Blue (Mongo Santamaría) 4. Spain (Chick Corea) 2. Birdland (Weather Report) 3. Giant Steps (John Coltrane) 2. Naima (John Coltrane) 3. Speak No Evil (Wayne Shorter) 4. 1. Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin) 2. Hymn to Freedom (Oscar Peterson) 3. The Köln Concert (Keith Jarrett) 4.

SAMBA JAZZ ODYSSEY - https://t.me/discor/6426COBB's POCKET - https://t.me/discor/5063IN YOUR DREAMS - https://t.me/discor/7405ON A MISTY NIGHT - https://t.me/discor/6965CHRISTMAS VIBES - https://t.me/discor/6631Фишка этого альбома - барабанщик и перкуссионист Portinho. Кроме того, струнные, аранжированные Дарио Эскенази, звучат в композициях The Summer Knows и A Lullaby for Benny.
Escuchar audio

Grammy-nominated saxophonist, educator, and activist José A. Zayas Cabán joins us to connect what's happening on the streets of the Twin Cities with what happens in our music rooms. He shares firsthand experiences of the recent Twin Cities ICE presence, the trauma and courage in his community, and the economic fallout for immigrant neighbors and local businesses. From there, we dig into the universal pull of Latin jazz and African diasporic rhythms, why students move so naturally to this music, and how K–12 band, choir, orchestra, and general music teachers can use it to teach core concepts, center student stories, and build truly inclusive programs. Along the way, José offers concrete ideas for repertoire, classroom framing, and using music-making as both healing and resistance.

Cochemea is a sax player, composer and arranger who spent some years playing vintage-style soul with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, as well as stints with Amy Winehouse, David Byrne, hip hop duo Run The Jewels and dozens more. Born Cochemea Gastelum into an Indigenous Yaqui family in California, he's found time over the past few years to release three albums of his own music, the latest being Vol. III: Ancestros Futuros. These albums don't attempt to untangle the knot of Indigenous, Spanish, and American cultural interactions over the centuries, instead using them as musical source material. With a lightly processed alto sax sound and lots of percussion, Cochemea and his band create songs that usually don't have words, although wordless vocals, chanted or sung, are part of the sonic tapestry. The result is music that is not only beyond category, it almost seems beyond time, as the album title suggests. Cochemea and his band have filled our studio, mostly with percussion instruments to play a live set. (-John Schaefer)Set list: 1. Otros Mundos 2. Ancestros Futuros 3. Omeyocan

Roger Glenn is truly one of the most interesting people in the world of music. He is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed, recorded and toured with a Who's Who list of Jazz and Latin Jazz luminaries. As our conversation came to a close, it became clear that we simply could not tell Roger's story without making it in two parts. So, Part 1 was about Roger's backstory. To call him multi-faceted and unique is an understatement. Interestingly, before I started production of Part 2, we had the serendipitous privilege of spending time with Roger at Keys Jazz Bistro during a quick trip to San Francisco, and it brought our Part 1 episode full circle. Meeting Roger in person proved to be everything I thought it would be. He was gracious, funny, a marvelous storyteller and thoroughly engaging - all the attributes I was delighted to experience when we recorded our interview via Zoom. Now, in Part 2, we shift gears to talk about his latest release as a leader. The album, called ‘My Latin Heart,' is out now on the Patois Records label. The most remarkable thing about it, besides the incredible music, is the fact that for this 80-year-old musician it is only his second album as the front man in 49 + years.
