October had its ups and downs. I missed an opportunity on the echo dots, but was able to get some more iPhones with a few more trips to the Apple store. I also experimented with Walmart and Target this month with some success. In the second half of the episode, I talk about our surfing trip to Siargao, flying on Philippine Airlines for the first time!Portland meetup reminder - 11/16 @ 4pm

The podcast episode highlights the importance of building resilience in coastal communities, especially in small island states like the Philippines. The Fish Forever program by RARE focuses on working with local communities and governments to manage coastal waters sustainably. By empowering these communities to manage their resources effectively, they can adapt to changes in the environment and be better prepared for disasters like typhoons. One example mentioned in the episode is the case of a local government in the Tanyan Strait in the Philippines. The mayor of this region took proactive steps to protect the mangrove forests, which are crucial for coastal protection. By implementing policies to prevent deforestation and creating livelihood programs around the mangroves, the community was able to benefit from the protection provided by these habitats during a typhoon. This example showcases how investing in coastal habitats and involving local communities can enhance resilience to environmental changes and disasters. Additionally, the Coastal 500 program brings together mayors and government representatives from different countries to share experiences and solutions for coastal management. By creating a network of leaders who can collaborate and learn from each other, the program aims to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities globally. The exchange of knowledge and best practices among these leaders can help in developing effective strategies for managing coastal resources and preparing for environmental challenges. Overall, the episode emphasizes the need for building resilience in coastal communities by involving local governments, communities, and international partnerships. By focusing on sustainable management practices, creating livelihood opportunities, and fostering collaboration among leaders, coastal communities can better adapt to environmental changes and disasters, ensuring their long-term sustainability and well-being. In the podcast episode, Rocky Sanchez-Torona from Rare discusses the collaborative efforts among local governments and communities in the Philippines and other countries to successfully conserve and manage coastal resources. The Fish Forever program, initiated by Rare, focuses on working with local communities and governments to manage their coastal waters effectively. Through this program, communities are empowered to take ownership of their marine resources, leading to sustainable practices and livelihoods. One key aspect highlighted in the episode is the importance of building resilience within coastal communities. By involving local governments and communities in the decision-making process, there is a greater sense of ownership and commitment to conservation efforts. For example, the program in Siargao, Philippines, showcased how mangrove protection and sustainable practices were implemented with the support of the local government. This proactive approach not only protected the mangroves but also provided livelihood opportunities for the community. The Coastal 500 initiative further exemplifies the power of collaboration on a larger scale. By bringing together mayors and government representatives from different countries, the program facilitates knowledge sharing, mutual support, and collective action. The exchange of ideas and experiences among these leaders can lead to innovative solutions and best practices being implemented across various regions. Moreover, the episode emphasizes the role of partnerships and capacity-building in scaling conservation efforts. By training provincial governments, universities, and other organizations, Rare aims to expand the reach of their programs and empower more communities to take action. The goal is to create a network of empowered local leaders who can drive change and advocate for sustainable coastal management practices. Overall, the collaborative efforts among local governments and communities, as demonstrated in the Fish Forever and Coastal 500 programs, showcase the effectiveness of working together towards a common goal of conservation and sustainable resource management. By fostering partnerships, sharing knowledge, and empowering communities, these initiatives are paving the way for a more resilient and environmentally conscious future for coastal regions worldwide. The podcast episode featuring Rocky Sanchez-Torona from Rare sheds light on the impactful programs like Fish Forever and Coastal 500 that are making a positive impact by empowering communities and promoting sustainable practices. Here are some key points from the episode that highlight the significance of these programs: Fish Forever Program: The Fish Forever program works with local communities and governments to manage coastal waters sustainably. The program focuses on giving communities exclusive rights to fish in certain areas, leading to better management and protection of marine resources. By involving communities in decision-making and management, Fish Forever encourages sustainable practices and fosters a sense of ownership among the locals. Coastal 500 Initiative: The Coastal 500 initiative aims to bring together 500 communities and governments to share resources and build coastal resiliency. By creating a network of mayors and government representatives from different countries, Coastal 500 facilitates knowledge exchange and collaboration on marine conservation efforts. The initiative empowers local leaders to drive change, advocate for policies, and work together towards common goals for protecting coastal ecosystems. Community Resilience: The success stories shared by Rocky highlight how communities have embraced sustainable practices and conservation efforts. Examples like the protection of mangroves in Siargao and the establishment of savings clubs demonstrate how communities are becoming more resilient to environmental challenges. The emphasis on building capacity, promoting livelihood programs, and engaging in collaborative efforts showcases the positive impact of these programs on community empowerment. Global Collaboration: The episode underscores the importance of global collaboration and knowledge sharing among mayors and government officials from different countries. By learning from each other's experiences and solutions, communities can address common challenges and implement effective conservation strategies. The formation of alliances and partnerships at a global level enhances advocacy efforts, amplifies voices, and accelerates progress towards sustainable marine conservation. In conclusion, programs like Fish Forever and Coastal 500 by Rare are instrumental in empowering communities, fostering sustainable practices, and promoting resilience in the face of environmental changes. Through collaborative initiatives, capacity-building, and community engagement, these programs are driving positive change and creating a more sustainable future for coastal communities worldwide.

Hear about tourist spots in Mindanao, the southernmost island in the Philippines, as the Amateur Traveler talks to Lonely Planet guidebook author Michael Grosberg and co-founder of LikeLocal.io about his many trips to Mindanao. Why should you go to Mindanao? Michael says, "Most people that go to Mindanao these days go directly to the island of Siargao, which is one of the hottest, most happening places in all the Philippines for people to travel to. We'll get to that and it's deservedly popular. However, there's so much more to see in Mindanao. Mindanao has one of the largest cities in the Philippines the city of Davao. Davao is in the far south of Mindanao. It's got a cosmopolitan culture, amazing, wonderful food. The mountains and the islands around Davao are incredible. You can spend a month there. The highest peak in the Philippines, Mount Apo, which you can climb, and people do is only a couple hours or so from Davao." "There are endless coastlines to explore. There is indigenous culture. There are surfing spots. The city of Zamboanga, also has its own unique culture, a combination of Muslim influence, Malaysian, and Spanish cuisine. The whole coastline, the north, the east, really all over, are dotted with incredible beaches, and a lot of them are not really traveled to by foreigners, but Filipinos love to travel, and so Filipinos that go to Mindanao go to all these places." For a one-week itinerary, Michael recommends a visit to Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin, and Siargao. ... https://amateurtraveler.com/tourist-spots-in-mindanao/

After living in New York, London, and Manila, the former TV producer and now LGBT advocate Queenmelo Esguerra has resettled in Siargao, which has evolved from remote provincial backwater to a trendy, cosmopolitan surfing hot spot. Queenmelo, or Melo for short, tells Howie Severino what makes Siargao magical: the combination of natural beauty and an egalitarian vibe where rich and poor, native and foreign can freely play and socialize together. "When surfers go to the water, everyone is equal. It's just you and your relationship with nature," she says while dressed in her typical flowing kaftan and flamboyant shades. "They carry that attitude when they're on the ground." Queenmelo asserts that Siargao is one of the most open places in the country for the LGBT community. But she says the Philippines still has a long way to go in gender equality, citing the sleeping status of the SOGIE bill. Shortly after she moved to Siargao in 2021, Typhoon Odette struck. Queenmelo and a friend survived by taking shelter in a fire station. The next day, she swung into action, mobilizing friends to set up a relief kitchen that prepared hot meals for beleaguered islanders. Queenmelo has also helped rebuild homes and start community food gardens. Siargao people's response to their plight demonstrated their community spirit and further deepened their roots in their adopted home. As they rebuild, they have a chance to create a model for the rest of the country — in sustainable tourism and in socially just ways of relating to each other.

In this powerful retrospective we reflect on the interplay of expectation, privilege and empathy. They say you learn more from your losses in life than your wins. True to form, after a rocky start Philippines turned out to be the place where we had the most to gain from the poise and wisdom of the community we stumbled upon. Sorry in advance for the audio quality, it took a lot of tweaking to get it to where it is. Sometimes the greatest lessons are the hardest to hear ;) Salamat, Siargao.

But this is also the surf capital of the Philippines, a glorious island full of natural features and beauty, and we're here for it. Just as soon as we get over the massive typhoon that destroyed all civilization. Silly old bear.

What is the essence of style? Sidney Yap has explored that very question over a long & storied fashion styling career that includes runway, editorial, TV/film, commercial, prenup, celebrity, and personal styling. Artistically inclined from a young age, Sid found his calling producing fashion shows for student orgs while completing his degree in business management at the Ateneo de Manila University. He went to on study at Parsons School of Design in New York, followed up by a stint in retail merchandising, before a quick styling gig had the industry knocking on his door to pursue styling full-time. The looks he created for celebrity and prenup clients are all over social media, but you've probably also seen his work in publications like Cosmo, FHM, Good Housekeeping, Lifestyle Asia, Manila Bulletin, Mega, Men's Health, Metro, People Asia, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Philippine Star, Preview, Seventeen, Star Studio (which awarded him Celebrity Stylist of the Year), the Star Magic Catalogue, and Yes! magazine. On this episode, Sid gives us a peek behind the scenes of a typical event or shoot. We also discuss finding one's personal style, Zoom dressing, the best-dressed member of BTS, his research into fashion history, and his zen approach to letting go of possessions. He also shares his optimistic outlook for what is ahead, after a rocky period for all. All in all, something cheery to kick off the New Year. This episode is dedicated to everyone who has had to start over from scratch this year. NOTE: We'd planned to release this episode in December, but put it on hold in light of the devastation caused by supertyphoon Odette / Rai in our hometown, Philippines. Our featured non-profit Lokal Lab is focusing on relief efforts in Siargao as well as longer-term plans to rebuild a stronger and more climate resilient island. If you're in Metro Manila and have clothing and other resources to spare, you may send in-kind donations till the end of January. Shoutout to Ms. Vera Shaina Placides for reaching out to us through Instagram and our Facebook Group, PH Murder Stories: The Verdict. Thank you for suggesting this case and supporting our podcast! On January 7, 2020, an alleged high-value drug dealer from Spain, and a surfer residing on the island of Siargao, was killed by authorities at his home amid an illegal drugs operation. The police claimed that they acted in self-defense after the suspect fired gunshots against the agents that were apprehending him. However, his family and friends from Spain suggest that a powerful politician was behind the killing. Diego Bello Lafuente was only 32-years-old when the police took away his life. He was a soccer player and a surfing enthusiast. Hi everybody, and thank you for listening to episode 40 of the Learn With Lels podcast. This episode is definitely one of my favourites. This week, I spoke with Desiree Gamotin, a Filipina Canadian who ditched her corporate life in New York City and Toronto to be a remote-working surfer girl in Siargao, Philippines—legit, her life is basically my vision board and I was fangirling a little too hard when I was talking to her.In our conversation we talked about:- why Des decided to make this drastic life change;- what her day-to-day is like as a surfer/remote-worker (think, work hours based on the tide);- surf culture in the Philippines and what it's like surfing amongst people who look like her (something I'm dying to experience); and- how we have the power to create our own rules. This conversation weirded me out because of how similar Des and I are (we're both Filipinas, Western University journalism alums, and travel-obsessed surfers with a love for Toronto). It also made me so excited for my future because Des helped me to see that you really can build a life that's totally authentic to who you are. I hope you enjoy this conversation, and be sure to check out Des' podcast, Siargao Love Stories. If you like this podcast, please subscribe wherever you listen, and follow me on social for more content (@LearnWithLels on Instagram and @KaitlinJingco on LinkedIn and Twitter).

What started as a strategy to combat a growing number of local crimes, has become an unlikely lifeline for the small Philippine surfing island of Siargao as the country struggles to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have a chat with the guys behind Harana Surf on the inspiring story of how they built their sustainable resort in Siargao from the ground up, their community-centered business practices, voluntourism, going between the city and island life, and the principles they live by such as catching the waves that come by in life.
Positive mindset coach and owner of Siargao wellness and surf resort Punta Punta, Gina Harris talks to us about the power of mindset, staying resilient, and shifting perspective to finding positivity in different situations in life. Gina takes us back to her sailing adventure that led to her blog moniker, Cactus and the Wave, and shares some grounding tips she practices to reduce anxiety in different situations.
Come fly with me! Welcome to another episode of GTWM as we take you on this trip of ups and downs and a few twists in between. It's Episode 80 of this Season 7 and we kick off this Friday night with a lot of interesting talk on the show. Let's check out the group we have in store. Caller #1 is Harper who is 37yrs old from Manila. Harper is a "career lesbian" and she has had at least 20 girlfriends during her time. But on a few instances wherein she breaks up with a GF, she then looks for a little something with men. She refuses to label herself as bi-sexual though. It's a nice look at what might be a pansexual girl. Caller #2 is James who is 27yrs old from Valenzuela. James is a hot guy who lives in Siargao. That means, he gets a tonne of sex. But of the 4 girls he sleeps with per week, most often than not his penis doesn't get hard. He wants to ask Mo if it's a sign his lifestyle isnt in sync with whats going on in his head. Caller #3 is Melissa who is 50yrs old from Marikina. Melissa's son Ryan is a DJ on Magic 89.9 and he recently felt bad about Mo saying the new Magic DJ's suck. Like the good mom she is, she calls Mo to tell him about it. Uh oh. Caller #4 is Mark who is 38yrs old from Tokyo. Mark's call was mistakenly edited out of Episode 77 and some listeners from Reddit pointed it out, so Mo added it to this episode as Mark from Japan wanted Mo's take about the Covid situation going on there. Just kidding, but really, he is still in the Philippines and riding out the pandemic safe on an island with very weak internet connections. Andrew shares how he optimizes his content based on the platform he'll be posting on. Sam introduces the risks that insurance brokers themselves face when they begin to write commercial insurance business. Thanks for tuning in!
This is Part 3 of our series of fabulous conversations with people who have found themselves “stranded” on three different islands – Siargao in the Philippines, Gili Trawangan in Indonesia and the little red dot of Singapore. In this final one of these conversations, Carolyn and Marc speak with artist Yen Phang. We talk about going a little claustrophobic after weeks of having our freedom short-circuited, of various government campaigns that infantilise the population and the ignominy of living on an island that doesn’t want to be an island, whose inhabitants are growing increasingly overweight and suffering from a shortage of Vitamin D.
We explore the answers to this question over three conversations with three fabulous people who have found themselves “stranded” on three different islands – Siargao in the Philippines, Gili Trawangan in Indonesia and the little red dot of Singapore. This is Part 2 and we’re speaking with Ashleigh Sanderson who went to Gili Trawangan to scuba dive and to volunteer at the island’s horse and cat clinic, thinking that it would be a short holiday. Fast forward eight weeks (and counting) and Sanderson is still there. It’s fair to say that Sanderson might have gone stark raving mad if it hadn’t been for Batty, the little rescue kitten.
How are things on YOUR island? We explore the answers to this question over three conversations with three fabulous people who have found themselves “stranded” on three different islands – Siargao in the Philippines, Gili Trawangan in Indonesia and the little red dot of Singapore. We start with Michelle Villarosa on Siargao in the Philippines, who tells us more about the importance of looking inward to find stability, lush coconuts and Filipino dramatics. Background sound effects courtesy of the island. Enjoy!
This is an intro to a series of three conversations that focuses on being on an island. In a situation such as this global pandemic that we’re in, what could be more perfect than being on an island? Cut off from covidiots and with plenty of sunshine and sand between your toes and beautiful sunsets to see you though the madness. Well. It depends on which island you’re on. We speak with people coping with the coronavirus lockdown on Siargao (the Philippines), Gili Trawangan (Indonesia) and Singapore. The first of these conversations will air on Wednesday 03 June 2020.
For this episode, D.J. converses with guest Kate Quebrar who is a creative freelancer with an Advertising background. Stress will always be a part of our lives. It may be uncomfortable, but it paves the way for growth and strength. But too much of it can burn you out and cause harm in the long run. For our first ever episode, we talked about this topic and explored some ways on how we can best deal with our issues—all the while sipping on some wine and relaxing in our small villa in Siargao. | FB: What's The 411 Podcast

Learning how to trust is something only you can teach yourself how to do. It can be one of the most important things that you will encounter during travel, but encounter it you must. Who do you trust in this world, though? Can you trust someone you’ve only known for a matter of seconds? How can you trust that you’re going to make the right decision? Hayden introduces Nate Buchanan of Kara and Nate to help him answer these questions and more. Nate Buchanan is famously from the travel vlog Kara and Nate, being one half of the titular pair - the other half being his wife, Kara. The two of them are looking to travel to 100 countries by 2019. In addition to this, Nate is also an expert in travel hacking. In this episode, Hayden and Nate discuss to plan or not to plan, as well as the importance of being a bucket list maker. They also talk about how Nate became a travel vlogger, and how important accountability and documentation are to his lifestyle and to travel. Nate’s story is based in the Philippines, and which he has titled, spectacularly and simply titled: ‘The Cave.’ In it, he features the island of Siargao, the concept of motorbikes, an adventure under the sea, and, of course, the titular cave itself. Adventure is lurking around every corner; as Nate proves, you just have to be willing to trust yourself, those around you, and the adventure itself in order to access the deepest reaches of it. Much like Nate and Kara accessed the deepest reaches of the cave. Hayden, of course, takes advantage of the motorbike portion of the story to weave a tale or two of his own, from his journeys on motorbikes to his adventures in Saigon. Hayden brings up trust in travel, too, and how to know you can trust your own decisions, which Nate relates to his own gut feelings. Nate also shares some travel hacks, as well as what travel hacking is and how even the simplest and least informed of travelers can travel hack. Trusting in yourself and others is a leap, not a baby step. It takes time to reach the point of being able to trust yourself to trust others and to trust your own gut. A long road though it may be, Kara, Nate, and Hayden are all living proof that it is a doable and, when achieved, worthwhile task. Trust in them. Trust in yourself. Trust in travel. 0:57 - Hayden introduces Nate Buchanan, one half of the travel-blogging duo Kara and Nate, a husband-and-wife team looking to travel to 100 countries by 2019. Nate is also an expert in travel hacking. 3:58 - Hayden and Nate discuss what works for them - planning, or not planning, as well as what plans to stick to while you travel and which plans you can ditch. They also talk about why bucket lists are so important to Nate. 9:47 - Hayden asks Nate to discuss his and Kara’s vlog and their travel goals. Nate explains how they came to this point, why they wanted to do it, and... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/backpackdigital/message
