For today's episode, we were honored as always to bring back one of our favorite people and conversation partners, and likely one of yours: Terryl Givens. We spoke with Terryl about a book he released in 2021, a biography called Stretching the Heavens: The Life of Eugene England and the Crisis of Modern Mormonism.Terryl's work on this biography led to a fascinating portrait of a man many of us look up to, and someone we truly wish we could have met (England died in 2001 at the age of 68). His legacy has proven to be both broad and enduring — in addition to a long and storied career in academia, he was a founder of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought and of the Association for Mormon Letters. His writing continues to move and inspire Latter-day Saints today, including through essays that have become classics like Why the Church is as True as the Gospel. In our interview with Terryl, we talked not just about the arc of Eugene England's life, but about the principles that arose from the insights he shared and some of the struggles he faced. In particular, we talked through some of the issues that came up for him as a man striving to be both true to his own conscience and to the authority of an institution he fully believed in and loved, when the two didn't fully align. In many ways, this seems to be the conflict at the heart of discipleship and even of Christianity's creation story. Regardless, we felt like exploring it through the lens of Eugene England's life was both relevant and poignant. This book, Stretching the Heavens, was published by UNC Press and is available on Amazon and Audible.

Learn the Surprising Secret to Success from a Guest Who Reveals Why Being Your Own Best Friend is Key. When discussing player determination in the realm of golf, the name Christian Heavens is most likely to be included. Christian keeps his nose to the grindstone and his eye on the ball in all aspects of his life as a pro golfer and CEO of Tour Line Golf. His tenure in the sport reflects a career-low round of 61, earned in a Florida pro golf tour event, and he's accomplished 25 tournament victories, including the St. Louis Publix Open this past May.Following a standout collegiate career, Christian made his mark professionally as a member of the PGA Tour Canada in 2012. The stealth player recorded his first two victories on the Florida Professional Golf Tour that same year and went on to compete on the Golf Channel's Big Break, ABC's Season 2 of Holey Moley, the Latin America Tour, and on Florida professional tours. An alumnus of the First Tee of Greater St. Lous, Christian represented the organization at the 2006 First Tee Open at Pebble Beach and in 2010 competed in the U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay. His outstanding academic and golfing skills earned him a First Tee Scholars scholarship to Georgetown College in Kentucky, where he captured the All-American Inaugural Gimmie Golf Professional Invitational in 2018.A two-time, first-team All-Conference member of the Mid-South Conference, as a junior Christian won first place in the final individual standings at the MSC Championships. For his efforts, he was named MSC Golfer of the Year and went on to earn third-team NAIA All-America honors. In each of his final three seasons at Georgetown, he finished in the top 12 of the MSC Championships.MAIN TAKEAWAYS:Christian Heavens isn't your “traditional” golfer. He got into golf at a time when golf for a Black man was not the norm. His grandfather, Levester Heavens, a firefighter, taught him to play golf when he was a little kid. Christian shared his grandfather's love for the game. Not compromising who you are despite the norm is important in maintaining your identity. Christian still loves hip-hop, and R&B and brings pieces of himself to the golf course. You can be you and still enjoy golf and feel welcome at a golf course or country club, he said. Alex tells a story about a joke he made during an interview, that the interviewer said they didn't understand so they didn't select him out of the top three candidates. Alex said he was just being himself and that should never change.Christian said the Black golf community is small and they talk. Code-switching is one obstacle they feel at a professional level. It can be exhausting as there's sometimes pressure to adapt or code-switch in the golf world. Being himself is one of the things that drives them to make golf more accessible. Alex said there's a difference between code-switching and being various versions of yourself. Christian said he has an at-home, chill, country club side that makes him feel comfortable. “You have to learn to go where you are celebrated not tolerated. Just being you, there will be people who rock with you and those who aren't going to rock with you. Even if you put on a persona, it will still be people that like you and those that don't. Be you and find and attract the people who genuinely like you. You can collaborate with your energies.”- Christian HeavensConfidence and building confidence, or faking it until you make it is key. Act as if you belong there and know where you're going. It will get you through many doors. Success breeds confidence. In golf, there are no coaches. On the golf course, the player can be their own worse enemy criticizing their techniques. But we have to speak to ourselves like we would someone else. You have to catch yourself and be aware of it to combat that. Be your own best...

Looking at the night sky with the radiance of the moon and stars, David understood what it all revealed. He said, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” The brightness and the brilliance of the skies tell us about the beauty and the majesty of God. Only someone so powerful and so creative could design what we see each night.Main Points:1. Regardless of where we live on earth, the voice of God speaks to us through nature, revealing His existence, power, and glory.2. Because of this general revelation, we cannot say God has hidden from us. He reveals His existence every day. 3. With this revelation, we have a choice of what to do with it. Seeing the beauty, majesty, and power of God, how will we respond? Many respond with indifference, but I pray you'll see the power of God and respond by acknowledging His greatness.Today's Scripture Verses:Isaiah 40:26 - “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name.”Psalm 19:1-4 - “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”Romans 1:20 - “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”Psalm 147:4 - “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.”Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group5 Minute Discipleship on Instagram

We wonder, “Is our prayer effective? Is it getting through to God? Is He hearing? Is He seeing the depth of wickedness, darkness, and evil in the world that is swallowing up the children of God, oppressing them, and holding them in bondage from serving Him as they would?” The Passover teaches us that God does hear our cry; He does come down; and He does deliver us.   Show Notes: When we read about the Passover in Exodus, we find two dynamic elements. One is the cry of God's people going up to Him and the other is God hearing their cry and coming down. An important lesson for us is that when God comes down everything changes. Today we are crying out for what some term a revival or an outpouring. To me it is a cry for His return to earth. It is a cry for His presence. As at the first Passover, it is His presence that will change everything.   The Passover represents the moment at which God came down and engaged in the situations surrounding His people. He engaged in their bondage. He engaged in their sin and their lack of faith and obedience to Him. He dealt with everything and everybody. He dealt with Moses. He dealt with Israel. He dealt with Pharaoh. He dealt with the Egyptians and the gods of Egypt. Everyone is dealt with when God enters the scene.   This principle applies to our crying out to God in this day. As it was with Israel, God's presence with us does not mean our circumstances are immediately better because God begins to deal with us as well as with everything that is oppressing us. He is going to deal with everything that must be dealt with in order to accomplish His will in the earth. And we need to be ready to participate in that process. We must remain faithful and live in faith knowing that God is here to accomplish His perfect and complete work in bringing His Kingdom and our deliverance.   Key Verses:   •       Isaiah 64:1–4. “Oh, that You would rend the heavens and come down.” •       Exodus 3:6–9. “I have … given heed to their cry. … So I have come down to deliver them.” •       Exodus 4:1. “What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say?” •       Exodus 4:10–12. “Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth.” •       1 Thessalonians 5:23. “May your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” •       Exodus 5:1–2. “Pharaoh said, ‘…I will not let Israel go.'” •       Exodus 5:6–9. “You are no longer to give the people straw to make brick as previously.” •       Exodus 5:19–23. “You have made us odious in Pharaoh's sight.” •       Exodus 12:12–14. “You are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance.” •       Exodus 12:29–32. “Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the sons of Israel; and go.” •       Exodus 14:19. “The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them.” •       Exodus 15:1–2. “Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord.” •       Exodus 19:9. “I will come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you.” •       Exodus 19:16. “There were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain.” •       2 Corinthians 7:1. “Let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit.”   Quotes:   •       “It's been a long time since He's been on the scene, and I think we lose the concept of really what it is to have God present.” •       “God never comes just to change the outward circumstances that we live in. God comes to change us in our heart towards Him.” •       “As He begins to move, yes, He's come down, but He has come down to move through you.”   Takeaways:   1.    When God comes down, it is impossible for things to stay the same. One aspect is that circumstances do not always get better in the moment. We will go through God's dealings, His purifying, purging, and refining of our hearts as He removes all defilement of flesh and spirit from us. 2.    When God comes down the gods of this age will be judged. The gods that hold us in bondage, the false gods that are being served and worshipped in the world will be judged. And we will break into a worship we have never known before. It will be a new day of constant worship as we find in heaven. 3.    When God comes down there is a visible, tangible presence of God as it was with Israel in the wilderness. Their lifestyle completely changed as they lived in His presence. This Passover let our cry be, “God come down.” Let that be our cry every day until we see His presence literally manifested in this world and our lifestyle is living with Him.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”   Genesis 1:1  Those are familiar words that lay the foundation for everything that comes after in the Bible, but you probably didn't know that forms the basis for the ideal economy. We'll talk about it with Jerry Bowyer.Jerry Bowyer is our resident economist and a WORLD Opinions contributor. Today we start a 6-part series of discussions titled “Economic Worldview.”We start with the question, “How did God create the world and man to be productive?”The most important, fundamental aspect of economics is an understanding that in the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. He created a world that continues to grow after he made it. That means, there is always the possibility of growth. Growth is built into God's creation. That's why we can have economic growth - because creation itself grows. Growth starts with a seed. We can consume the seed or delay gratification and watch it grow. That's the virtuous cycle. In a healthy economy, there is a focus on reinvestment rather than overconsumption. Whenever we have reinvestment, there's some risk involved, which means you need to have good, firm institutions — a house built on stone rather than sand. We often don't know which houses are built on rock and which are built on sand right away. From a distance, they look similar. But when the storms come, it becomes clear. We have seen this play out recently with multiple US bank failures. Banks that were built on sand, rather than God's principles, came tumbling down. You can read more of his godly insights on economics at WNG.org.On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: Should you reduce retirement contributions to save for the down payment on a house? How do you cash out an I-bond?RESOURCES MENTIONED:Find a Certified Kingdom AdvisorSSA.govTreasury.govRemember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Happy Easter everyone! Today we'll take a fresh look at the Easter story, but we're not going to start at the traditional place - the gospel, the story of Jesus rising from the dead on the third day in triumphant glory. Don't worry, we'll be sure to end up there! But today we're going to start with a verse in the Old Testament, from the prophet Isaiah. We want to show you that the Easter story was not some surprise event. It was predicted by the prophets hundreds of years before it happened, and even though the disciples didn't see it coming (they were expecting a different kind of triumph), it was part of God's brilliant plan all along. The Bible bears this out, because there are traces of the cross throughout the Old Testament. Here's one of them: Rend the HeavensIsaiah 64:1-2 (NIV) Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you! As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you!Let me tell you about why this passage was so important to Jewish people in Isaiah's day. And then I'll tell you why it should matter to you on this Easter Sunday, thousands of years after it was written. Let's focus in on the passage:Rend the Heavens - pay attention to this phrase, cause we'll see it again in the NTSpeaks of God's revelation of himselfIsrael had hoped God would reveal himself as conquering king! Come down and make the nations quakeThis is what many of Jesus followers were looking for from him: a conquering Messiah who would overthrow the Romans. Then he ended up hanging on their cross.Q: How do you see God? What are you hoping for from him?Jesus' MinistryWe've been studying the Gospel of Mark as a church since the beginning of the year. In chapter 1 we looked at the baptism of Jesus. Let's look at it again with Isaiah 64 in mind: Mark 1:10-11 (NIV) Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”This is the beginning of the Isaiah 64 prophecy - Jesus starts his earthly ministry(Notice the Triune God here…)But instead of a fire to make the nations quake, here's a sampling of what Jesus did:Heals a leper (“I am willing…”)Heals a paralytic (only after he forgives his sin)Invites fishermen and tax collectors to follow himChallenges the religion policePreaches good news, not hellfireTorn in TwoFast forward to the crucifixion. This is where it gets really interesting. Jesus was convicted at a sham Jewish trial, beaten by Roman soldiers, and nailed to a cross. Pay attention to what happens the moment after Jesus dies on that cross:Mark 15:37-38 (NLT) Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. This is the climax of the Isaiah 64 prophecy. “Oh that you would rend the heavens…” Matthew 27:51 (ESV) And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.Exodus 26:31-33 (NLT) “For the inside of the Tabernacle, make a special curtain of finely woven linen. Decorate it with blue, purple, and scarlet thread and with skillfully embroidered cherubim. Hang this curtain on gold hooks attached to four posts of acacia wood. Overlay the posts with gold, and set them in four silver bases. Hang the inner curtain from clasps, and put the Ark of the Covenant in the room behind it. This curtain will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.Hebrews 10:19-22 (NLT) And so, dear brothers and...

And before we speak about the evidence of Islam and the Holy Quran's Divine origin, let me quickly introduce your Creator to you. Muslims do not worship a particular God of Muslims; instead, the God that Muslims worship is the universal God who created the heavens and the Earth, which many people believe in from the time of their childhood. The word "Allah" is the unique name of God and translates to mean God. Regardless, some people harbor the mistaken belief that Muslims worship a different God than Christians and Jews do and that "Allah" is the God of the Arabs or the Muslims. This is far from the truth. Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians use the same name, "Allah," to refer to God. If one were to examine an Arabic translation of the Bible, one would see the word "Allah" being used in place of the term, God. However, Muslims, Christians, and Jews have different concepts of God.Allah is the one and only absolute and eternal God. He is the Creator of the Heavens and Earth, the Creator of the Universe. He is the Lord of all lords and King of all kings. He is the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful. Allah Neither Begets nor is He Begotten. And He knows no equal. Say, "He is Allah, who is One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neitherbegets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent." (Quran 112:1-4) Muslims believe in one unique, incomparable God—one with no son, daughter, father, mother, family, or partner. He is the Knower of the unseen and the Source of All Mercy. He is the Creator, the Maker, the Fashioner, the Wise. All that is in the Heavens and on Earth magnifies Him. Muslims believe that none should be worshipped but Him alone. He is the true God, and every other deity is false. None carries the right to be worshipped, revered, adored, invoked, supplicated, or shown any act of worship but Allah alone. God is unique, indivisible, and similar to nothing. Whenever you try to compare God to anything in this world, the source of comparison cannot be God because God, to put it simply, is incomparable. Your finite human mind cannot comprehend and grasp God as a concept. Muslims avoid conceptualizing His image because imagining or visualizing Him would limit Him. The human imagination is limited, as it is based on what it observes and experiences directly. The human imagination cannot fully grasp God's state, which is timeless and eternal with no beginning or end. God has a unique nature and is free from gender and human weakness. He is beyond anything which human beings can imagine. "There is no god but He, the Creator of all things; then worship Him, and He has the power to dispose of all affairs. No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision; He is the Sublime, Well-Aware."            (Quran 6: 102-103)God is the King, the Holy, free from all defects, The Protector, the Keeper, the Sustainer of Earth and the Universe and all it contains. He is the Glorious, the Great, the deserver of all Praise. The Kingdom of the Heavens and the Earth belong to Him. Nothing is hidden from Him, and nothing is beyond His capabilities. He is the One that merges the night into the day and the day into the night. He is the Master of the Day of Judgment. Allah does not sleep nor slumber, nor does sleep overtake Him. "He is Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates, and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing." (Quran 42:11)God is Loving, Compassionate, and Merciful; He is the answerer of prayers. He is indeed involved and concerned with the daily affairs of all human beings. God is the Beneficent, the Merciful. He is the Giver of life and the Causer of death. He is the Master of the Day of Judgment. He is the Most-High, the Most-Supreme.

Belief in the Angels of Allah

TheSincereSeeker's Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2023 4:05

The second article of faith to embrace is the belief in the Angels. The Angels are part of the unseen world; we cannot comprehend and prove it scientifically. You cannot see the Angels unless God allows you to and enables your vision. Muslims believe in Angels because they are mentioned numerous times throughout the Holy Quran and in the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, a body of work that Muslims call Hadith."The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His Angels and His Books and His Messengers…" (Quran 2:285)God describes Angels' appearance, attributes, characteristics, and responsibilities in His Holy Book. We do not know precisely when the Angels were created, but they predate the creation of human beings. The Angels were created from pure shining light (Noor in Arabic). They are light-giving entities. Angels are generally more powerful than humans and travel at the speed of light. The Angels have certain specialties and capacities that humans do not possess. God refers to the Angels as honored servants."...Rather, they are but honored servants."           (Quran 21:26)In Arabic, Angels are called 'Mala'ika,' which means "to assist and help." Angels are Holy and exist in a constant state of worship and praise to God all day and all night; they do not disobey Him. They worship Allah constantly without growing bored or tired."They exalt Him night and day and do not slacken." (Quran 21:20)The sole purpose of the Angels is to execute the commandments of Allah. An Angel has no needs or desires for material goods. Angels do not eat, drink, sleep, marry, or procreate. The Angels do not die. The same Angels that existed when Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, was created still exist today and will continue to live until the trumpet is blown for the Day of Judgment.   "…And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him…" (Quran 74:31) The Angels have no gender; they are not female nor male. Angels are physically very beautiful, except the Angel guardian of the hellfire, who wears a stern expression and never laughs. The Greatest of these Angels are magnificent in size, far beyond our imagination. The largest and most significant is the Angel Gabriel (Jibril in Arabic), the Angel descended from Heavens to instruct the Prophets on how to teach and preach the religion. All Angels have wings; some possess two, three, or four pairs - or more. Angel Gabriel has 600 wings and is of a size so great that it fills the space between Heaven and Earth, blocking the entire horizon. You learn about the Angels to ponder, reflect, and reaffirm the Greatness of your Creator. The experience of having knowledge and belief in the Angels adds to the awe you feel toward God, in that He can create this great being and, indeed, can create whatever He Pleases and Wills. The awe and magnificence of the Almighty's creation reveal and indicate the Magnificence, Glory, and Majesty of the Almighty Himself. This should humble you and increase your God-consciousness, love, and fear of the Almighty. Knowing of the Angels also reminds you that your actions are continuously recorded by the Angels, hopefully decreasing your sins and increasing your good deeds.

Veda is a water researcher, public speaker, mother, artist  and author. She has dedicated the last 10 years observing and photographing the life of water. She believes that water is fluid intelligence, observing itself through every living organism on the planet and in the Universe.   Her primary area of focus is photographing water in its ‘state of creation', the space between liquid and ice. It is through her remarkable crystallographic photos that water reveals its awareness of not only Creation, but thought and intention through imagery.   Veda brings a message of hope and joy from the very source of life itself, she says “Water is transparent, it knows no colour, creed or religion. Water does not judge, nor does it label, it will enter the body of an ant as easily as it will enter the body of a king, or a homeless person or a tree or a dragonfly. Water is our constant companion, from the moment we are conceived it is always with us...even upon death, it is water that evaporates from the physical rising upwards into the Heavens."   Guest links: https://www.vedaaustin.com/   Join our membership community: https://friendsofthetruth.co   Learn more about and join the waitlist for our group coaching program Rise Above The Herd: https://riseabovetheherd.co   See all our episodes: https://hereforthetruth.com   Download our free e-book “55 Signs of Low Self-Esteem for Truth Seekers”: https://growyourselfesteem.com   Connect with us on Telegram: https://t.me/areyouhereforthetruth   All other links: https://tinyurl.com/hfttlinks   Hosted by Joel Rafidi & Yerasimos Intro and outro music: “Illusion” by Joel Rafidi Intro voice-over: Namakula (https://www.namakula.com/voice-over)

Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge.” Do you ever wonder, “Where do I start?” In such a noisy frantic world, and in your noisy frantic life, how do you even begin to look to God? The answer is here. Look to what He has made. The heavens declare! When was the last time you looked at the multitude of stars on a clear night, or took some time to go on a walk, and marvel at the variety of trees and plants. They are beautiful aren't they? They're inspiring. They're meant to be. These created things are speaking. Night after night, all the time, they speak to you imparting to you knowledge about the Creator. What are they declaring? His glory. God we seek Your glory and we marvel at the work of Your hands.

In this podcast episode, Nicole O'Byrne speaks with award-winning author Jim R. Miller about his book Residential Schools and Reconciliation: Canada Confronts its History published by University of Toronto Press originally in 2017 and reprinted in paperback in 2022. In his book, Miller addresses and explains the institutional responses to Canada's residential school legacy. Providing an analysis of archival material and interviews with former students, politicians, bureaucrats, church officials, and the Chief Commissioner of the TRC, Miller reveals a major obstacle to achieving reconciliation – the inability of Canadians at large to overcome their flawed, overly positive understanding of their country's history. This provocative work asks Canadians to accept that the root of the problem was Canadians like them in the past who acquiesced to aggressively assimilative policies. Jim Miller is a professor emeritus of history and a former Canada Research chair and native newcomer. Relations at the University of Saskatchewan. He is the author of numerous works on issues related to Indigenous peoples including Skyscrapers Hide the Heavens and Shingwauk's Vision. Miller authored the first ever accounts of Canada's residential school system and shaped public understanding of issues including treaty rights.
