You hear it all the time from coaches: if you're not shooting "game shots" in workouts, you're not getting better. I 100% understand the reasoning. But, is anything in a workout really a "game shot?" There's no defense. We know what we're doing already and don't have to react and adjust. We're likely moving at lower speed. So is there really much of a point of trying to shoot ONLY "game shots?" I say no. Instead, find ways to challenge yourself by targeting the qualities that go into these game shots. These don't have to be insane methods, but just finding ways to stretch ourselves just out of our comfort zone can go a long way. Then, when we have defense available, we can keep it more simple because these will be much closer to the shots we shoot in an actual game. Makes sense to me at least.
When you look at it... basketball checks a ton of boxes in terms of building athleticism. We typically consider the game to be the end, not the means. But hoopers are constantly getting fantastic workouts through just HOOPING!
As hoopers, we never sprint full speed. You may feel like you do, but I'd guess 90% of hoopers don't even reach their absolute max velocity within a given MONTH. Why? It's not the nature of our game. We don't open up for 40-50+ yards to escape defenders. With that being said, there is undoubtedly a range of benefits we can reap from sprinting full speed in our training programs. Let me know your thoughts!
On this episode, Founder of Elite Athletes Joerik Michiels (@joerik) joined me from Belgium to talk his journey, the difference between American and European hoops, how he approaches training (very similar to myself), and his facility.
In Episode 6, I brought on the coach of my rival high school (funny how the world works), Coach Steve Turner. Steve is a great coach and an even better guy, so it's no surprise this was a good one. Coaches, players, and even parents will benefit from this one! Coach Turner: @coachsteveturner Coach's Podcast:www.turnerandoneill.com
I don't think any hooper can truthfully say they've never been nervous before or during a game. It's natural when you care about something, like we care so much about the game of basketball. But there are ways we can not only eliminate this but use it to our advantage! I give you three practical methods and much more in this episode. Hope y'all enjoy! I talk a quite often about how group workouts should be prioritized over individual workouts in the realm of basketball training. But I promise you I'm not fully discounting individual workouts! They can undoubtedly be very valuable. In this podcast, I talk about what they're best for and why.
My man Tyler Leclerc of TJL Training joined me for my second guest episode. We covered a number of topics from both a training and business perspective, so this episode is fantastic for both hoopers and coaches alike. Let me know your thoughts! Ty's Instagram: @TJLTraining

Welcome! I want to thank you guys for tuning in to this brand new endeavor, Attention to Detail: The Podcast. In this episode, I kick off the show with my vision for the show, but the majority of the 26 minutes takes a deep dive into why many players don't see results from their training many times. Hopefully you guys will take some applications away from this and get to work!
