I'm delighted to welcome back coach and coach developer, Dr Jamie Taylor in this episode. Jamie's interests lie in performance enhancement in sport, specifically in coaching, coach development, high performance and talent development. Jamie is Assistant Professor in Elite Performance at Dublin City University and a senior coach developer at Grey Matters, a company specialising in performance enhancement and coaching development for individuals, sporting/cultural organisations and systems. In this episode, Jamie and I discuss his new book, co-edited with Prof Dave Collins, entitled ‘Sport Skill Acquisition: Integrating Theory and Practice'. The book carefully and critically considers the expanding knowledge of skill acquisition and motor control, with a focus on application, examining three major theoretical perspectives that dominate the field: cognitive, ecological dynamics, and predictive processing. Jamie and Prof Dave Collins use their combined wisdom as coaches, coach developers, and expert sport psychology practitioners to offer practical advice on blending theoretical approaches, using examples from a variety of sports and activities. For those looking to improve their work with performers, Sport Skill Acquisition provides a road map for choosing the best approach for each unique situation to develop skills for optimal sport performance.

Carl also addresses the challenges of integrating theoretical knowledge into practical coaching, the gaps in current coaching education, and the impact of accreditation on learning experiences. He advocates for a more humble and adaptable coaching approach that encourages exploration and problem-solving among athletes. In this conversation, Carl discusses the importance of a unified methodology in high performance sports, emphasizing the need for effective communication and adaptability among coaching staff. He contrasts the concepts of preparedness versus planning, advocating for a more flexible approach to coaching that allows for real-time adjustments. The discussion also touches on the evolving role of coaches, the significance of long-term success over immediate wins, and the distinction between knowledge of and knowledge about in coaching practices. Carl highlights the necessity of experiential learning and the value of engaging in meaningful conversations with athletes to foster a supportive and effective training environment. Send us a textSupport the showhttps://talkingperformancepod.com/

It's common parlance to say someone is "good with money," but it's often said in a way that suggests some people are innately gifted with money management skills. Jesse punches back at this supposition. He argues that becoming good with money is a skill, and skills are acquired through habit -- stringing together a lot of days with good money decisions until the good decisions become second nature.   You don't have to be perfect either! Jesse cites his favorite definition of intelligence, which is error correction, i.e. someone who makes an error, realizes the error, and then fixes it, demonstrates intelligence. It turns out, error correction is built into YNAB's four habits: rolling with the punches is the process of reacting to new circumstances by reallocating money as needed. Then, in the future you can plan for those new circumstances by embracing them as part of your true expenses (habit #2).   Next time you catch yourself thinking "I'm not good with money," focus on making one good decision, then another the next day, then correcting your errors... until it becomes another skill you have acquired!   Get your tickets to YNAB Fan Fest 2025! The concept of “learning how to learn” focuses on meta-learning, which involves improving one's own learning strategies. Instead of just absorbing information, meta-learners refine the skills that make learning itself more effective. Cognitive science supports various learning strategies by exploring how the brain processes information. Techniques such as spaced repetition, active recall, and interleaving can improve long-term retention and understanding. Improving abilities in specialized areas, like reading and interpreting research, involves strategic approaches. Similarly, becoming more knowledgeable about nutrition requires staying updated with the latest research and critically evaluating findings to boost proficiency and confidence in the field. In this podcast episode, Scott Young discusses these themes, offering insights from his work on learning optimization. He shares practical methods for improving learning efficiency, particularly in reading research and expanding knowledge in nutrition. Scott's expertise provides a valuable framework for enhancing cognitive abilities and achieving more effective learning outcomes.
