Episode number 5 of the Down In The Dirt Podcast, I sit down with Austin Byler, who is a former Arizona Diamondback and now the Co-Founder of Major League University. This episode, fires me up! I had so much fun talking with Austin and just the passion and knowledge he has about the game, hearing the things he is doing with Major League University and how he is trying to develop the next generation of players, its really awesome. We start by talking about Austin growing up in Peoria, Arizona, and how every year he was around the Spring Training complexes and the major leaguers that would pass through and the kind of impact that had on him from a young age. Then we jump into his time in high school and he shares what his recruiting process was like, the difficulties he faced by not being one of the guys recruited right away from his class, but how he continued to grind it out and wound up signing with the University of Nevada-Reno, which is a great learning experience for any kid who may be a late recruit in high school. We then jump into his time at UNV-Reno and how he was in a good situation and was able to develop as a player, but also played on a team that was full of talented guys, and how this lead to him getting an opportunity to play in the Cape Cod Summer League and ultimately lead to him getting drafted, not once, but twice. We talk about the decision making process he had to go through when it came to deciding if he wanted to go back to school or to start his professional career. We jump into his time with Diamondbacks though, he talks about the transitions he had to make through the multiple minor league levels, and we touch on the daily grind of playing professional baseball. Before getting to the Instagram Questions and the Quick Fire round, Austin talks about Major League University, which is an online baseball training platform which covers all areas of the game. He tells you how you can get signed up, and the details about which package gives you access to. Some pretty cool stuff! I love what he is doing for the game, this was such a fun episode, great guy with passion and knowledge for the game!
