Southern Fiction: Shane Brown & Michael Farris SmithMichael Farris Smith and Shane Brown write what they know. Both could be described as writers of Southern Noir.Smith has had a successful career writing novels, screenplays, and short stories. He is also a musician and leads the local Oxford band, Michael Farris Smith and the Smokes. Their latest release is called Lostville. You can see the film, Chasing Rabbits, on Tubi, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV.Shane Brown is the son of acclaimed author Larry Brown. He is following in his father's footsteps in writing in a similar voice. He has recently landed a publishing deal and his first book will be out soon. Both authors are located in Oxford, a gathering point for creative types. Must be something in the air.Southern noir is a gritty, atmospheric subgenre of fiction that merges the dark, cynical tone of classic noir with the distinct cultural and historical backdrop of the American South. Set in humid, decaying towns or sprawling urban underbellies, it features flawed protagonists—often detectives, drifters, or outcasts—navigating a world of corruption, violence, and moral ambiguity. Infused with Southern Gothic elements, such as grotesque characters and oppressive settings, Southern noir explores themes of racial tension, class struggle, and the lingering weight of history, all wrapped in a sultry, fatalistic vibe. Authors like James Lee Burke and Daniel Woodrell craft taut, evocative tales that pulse with the South's unique blend of beauty and brutality.Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support

Hello and welcome back to another in the Hallowed Histories strand of Winter Tales, and we hope you all had a very pleasant Christmas. Christmas is an odd time, as i am sure you realized. What strikes us as being so odd is the way in which it collapses the old into the new. Christmas traditions that have been with us since the Victorian era, and sometimes even further back, are not settled in with presents of cutting-edge technology, video calls to distant relatives, ecards and the AI algorithm tempting you with targeted Boxing Day sales. This weird mix of the future and the past can lead to a very tense present. Shane Brown's story tonight, DBL645 (mono) touches on this. We are big fans of Shane Brown's work over here at Hallowed Histories. His novel, Welcome to Marlington, was one of my favorite books of the past few years, and his annual tradition of releasing a new ghost story every Christmas has become a very welcome custom. You can find these stories on amazon, and they are all well worth checking out. Tonight's story combines a lot of Shane's recurring themes – music, the esoteric world of collecting, ghost stories and East Anglia. DBL645 (mono) is read by David McCabe, who was so magnificent in our Sherlock Holmes reading last year. David is an actor, script editor and voice artist, who has had a full year playing Phileas Fogg in the Maddermarket's revival of Around the World in 80 Days. David has that too-rare gift for a voice actor of being able to breathe life into every individual character, and he uses that to excellent effect in this reading.
Welcome back to Hallowed Histories, presenting the first of our annual Winter Tales series. This year's lineup is exciting, featuring returning favorites like Sally Harris and Shane Brown, as well as new voices, all linked by the haunting landscape of East Anglia—a muse for the likes of Susan Hill, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Montague Rhodes James. For those craving more, the British Library's latest addition to their Tales of the Weird series, 'Eerie East Anglia,' comes highly recommended. Edited by Edward Parnell, a friend of the show, this anthology gathers classic terror tales from the region. If you're seeking the ideal place to purchase it, Holloway, a newly opened store off St Benedicts Street in Norwich, offers a quaint and esoteric selection of local folklore. We're also thrilled to announce the return of our live events this winter. On Sunday, 8th December, Stranger's Hall will host a talk with Sally Harris and Shane Brown, delving into their works, lives, and fascination with the extraordinary. Tickets can be secured via the Norfolk Museums website. Kicking off our tales is local writer and actress Alexandra Evans, whose story aptly heralds the advent season. Enjoy this appetizer, and join us each week throughout Christmas for more.

DEEP DIVE - On this episode we discuss The Rothschild Dynasty and the beginning to one of the most powerful and covertly influential dynastic families in modern civilisation. From the Jewish ghettos of 18th century Frankfurt to seats at the most clandestine and unimaginably powerful boardroom tables in the modern day; the Rothschild family and their immeasurable wealth has had a secret hand in the shaping of our society and, undoubtedly, a huge influence on the future of humanity. In this episode I wanted to stay away from the inevitable global elite chat and give a factual and cultural history of the Rothschild family and how it all started with the patriarch Mayer Amschel Rothschild. We discuss how his shrewd business dealings and his willingness to do work others wouldn't; made him amounts of money some of us cant even fathom. Joining me on this episode are two proper mensches Shane Brown and Tom O'Mahony for the mad craic and lacht. I really hope you enjoy this one and there will be more shows, much sooner than this one came; now that I have my head screwed back on! ___________________________ There is an extra 30 minutes in the ad-free Patreon version of this show available here https://www.patreon.com/posts/rothschild-ad-30-80013395 ___________________________ If you want to follow TCG on social platforms including the TCG Guilded Server; watch video versions of the livestream podcast and documentaries; or even join in on live chats about current events; get notifications of tickets you can buy to upcoming live stage shows or any other way to connect with me; all the available links, info and instructions you can find by clicking this link http://www.taplink.cc/thoseconspiracyguys If you want to throw a few bucks up the internet to support the show on Patreon you can get exclusive Patreon-Only content; all seasons of ad-free episodes; exclusive access to live chats and private social media like Instagram and Guilded and a whole load of other stuff click here http://bit.ly/TCG-Patreon where you can get all this from just $2 per month subscription or an annual one-time payment with a month free! VeeR says we just got our 100th Subscriber I wrote Shane Brown and Lauren Buckingham: Tomorrow I'll be attending the PixVana pop up in NYC to check out their new editing tools. I've started using their cloud based stitching for the GoPro Omni but it doesn't stitch GoPro Fusion yet. The tools they are demonstrating will be using the Rift or VIVE to edit inside a headset so that proportions and distances are easier to master. I reached out to Within and applied to be considered as a content provider because I really like the quality of what they share. I noticed that we are showing up frequently in Oculus' promoted videos in the Go. I also reached out to Magnopus who did Coco and CNN's amazing apps and told them we want to put the puss in Magnopus(s). I'll let you know if any of them respond. I'm not sure what is happening, but we are getting hundreds of people a day to sign up on Facebook Messenger with us, where it's usually been about a dozen a day. I reached for Howard's liqueur Yesterday was busy from start to finish. We welcomed Manny Jaguar (Jamie's soulmate) and Nat the Amur Leopard. Shane Brown and David Reynolds from Virtual Marketing 360 came and captured drone footage, and lots of 360 footage to show us what they can do in our budding partnership. As soon as the cats were safely moved into their new homes, Phyllis, our 80+ year old volunteer, radios that there was a white, fluffy something in Zucari Serval's cage that looked like it was dying. Afton and I removed an albino raccoon that was drooling and snapping at the air. We will send it off for rabies testing, but the last two raccoons turned out to be positive for Canine Distemper, which is deadly to cats and for which there is no vaccine. Canine Distemper wiped out most of the big cats at In Sync Exotics in Wylie, TX a few years back and decimated lion, leopard and cheetah populations in the wild circa 2004 maybe. Zucari will be placed under quarantine, but these raccoons fit through the cage wire and travel across the roofs, dropping their deadly feces into the cages. I am beyond freaked out about this. Later, I got a call about an injured bobcat, but he's living across the Alafia River from the woman and can hunt, so there's no chance I can net him. She will keep an eye on him. I was really glad I didn't have to go running out into the night tonight. Black Man Arrested On Warrant For 49-Year-Old White Man With A ‘Bushy White Beard' And Blue Eyes A Las Vegas Black man is suing multiple police departments after he was arrested on a warrant that was issued for a 49-year-old white man with a bushy white beard and blue eyes.According to the lawsuit, on Jan. 8, 2020, 23-year-old Shane Lee Brown was driving home from work when he was pulled over by Henderson Police. He didn't have his driver's license so he told the officers his name and gave them his Social Security card. A records check by officers revealed a bench warrant for a 49-year-old man named Shane Brown, who faced a weapons charge associated with a prior felon who was arrested with a gun. The lawsuit revealed that the older Brown had been convicted of a felony in 1994, three years before Shane Lee Brown was born. The lawsuit also stated that during his arrest in 2020 officers, ”failed to perform even a cursory review of the warrant to determine if Shane Lee Brown was the person named in the warrant.” Brown was sent to Henderson Detention Center, where he pleaded with officers that he was not the Shane Brown in the bench warrant, but was ignored. Two days later, Las Vegas police transferred Brown to Clark County Detention Center and recorded his correct date of birth, race, and height. Officers also issued Brown a different identification number that was assigned to the older Shane Brown. He was then orderer by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to appear in front of a judge for the older Brown's bench warrant but under the younger Brown's race and date of birth. The 23-year-old would spend four days in Clark County Detention Center before finally appearing in front of a district judge who released him after the two men's booking photos were shown side by side in court. Brown would spend a total of six days in jail. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/Teddy-G/support

After purchasing their Unimog with a plan to build it out over three years, Sonja decided after one year they needed to start their overlanding adventure around the world as soon as possible. Just go! Now on the road for over one and a half years, they will occasionally stop for a week or so to make changes or add upgrades as they travel. The naming of their truck was genius; wanting to make sure the potentially intimidating looking machine had a friendly name, they wanted to be approachable to people as they traveled. ELMO is an acronym for Expedition (E) Survival / überleben (L) Mobile (MO) making it easier to have contact with new friends. And who wouldn’t smile at a cute little red guy on a Unimog.Dirk and Sonja go through a lot of great tips and stories in this two part episode, not excluding the harder parts of overlanding in areas of the world that are in war, safety is a vital consideration. Find all GHT Overland podcasts at: https://ghtoverland.com/podcastsFor Overlanding Gear visit https://ghtoverland.com/overlanding-gear-guideAs we look for new potential guests to interview, we tend to be attracted to those with multiple countries visited, overland travelers who highlight local foods, local people and their experiences. Not necessarily that perfectly beautiful social media page, rather those that share the great parts of overland travel alongside the challenging parts, or even the regular day to day life of an overlander. Michel and Renée of @Overlanding_the_World exemplify all of these characteristics, so you can imagine our excitement when they agreed to an interview. An Amsterdam couple who decided an overlanding trip around the world was a much better idea than buying a house (we totally agree!). This a fun interview loaded with great information, tip and stories from the road. Michel & Renée also agreed to dive deeper on overlanding safety, and why they choose to visit countries like Iran and Pakistan. It’s an eye opening conversation as we try to better understand why so many overlanders are still visiting countries with such political turmoil. Of course we also discussed all our normal topics and enjoyed their stories from all their overlanding experiences as they follow the sun around the world. Be sure to follow them on social media for their firsthand accounts of each country they visit.
