The middle of a JAYREELZ podcast sandwich as there's plenty to savor before we top it off with another one tomorrow. Thanks for stopping by to whet your appetite with plenty of sports chatter as THISSSSSS… (3:08) I'll take care of some housekeeping as another podcast will come your way tomorrow with a special guest (WFAN's Keith McPherson) and of course, I have to plug the OLIPOP promotion. Please see above and support. (5:53) The dog days of August are here. Or are they? Considering how cool it's been in the Northeast over the last couple of days has made it feel like October. Which is apropos with the NFL season commencing just four weeks from today. (7:00) What is going on in LA with the Dodgers? Or maybe it's what's in the water in Arizona and San Diego as they've played over the heads to where both teams are just three games back of the Dodgers. Is there any concern that the Dodgers are on the verge of choking the division away? Will the Diamondbacks & Padres eventually cool off? Speaking of which, are the Twins primed to overtake the Guardians in the AL Central, with a four game series taking place between the two this weekend? Baseball is starting to peak here as there are plenty of good series (PHI-ARZ, HOU-BOS, NYM-SEA, STL-KC, BAL-TB) to keep an eye on over the next few days. (26:55) 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk has been the talk in the NFL over the past few days as we'll see where he ends up after requesting a trade earlier this training camp. The two teams that are frontrunners (CLE, PIT) or is there another team laying in the weeds to procure the wideout? Chiefs K Harrison Butler signed the richest contract in NFL history at his position. Is there any more pressure on him to deliver as he secured the bag? (34:50) In the Association, the Utah Jazz re-up on one of their own as Lauri Markkanen signed a max deal to stay in Salt Lake City. Plus, Charles Barkley changes his mind and will honor his TNT contract after the NBA leaves the network after next year. Will his personality work with other sports or events that aren't basketball? (39:57) The NCAA hands down a four year suspension to former Michigan Wolverine coach, Jim Harbaugh, for “unethical conduct” during their championship season. With Harbaugh coach of the Los Angeles Chargers over the next five years, is this suspension weak by the NCAA? (43:22) I haven't been interested or intrigued by anything that's going on at the Summer Olympics in Paris. In fact, I'm upset because the committee is adding flag football as a sport to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. What's next? Stickball! (47:12) Rafael Nadal will bypass the final Grand Slam of the calendar year in a couple of weeks at the US Open. Is this the beginning of the end for the tennis great? Another frustrating week of waiting for the Atlanta Braves bats to awaken

The Atlanta Braves' offensive woes in May have grown from a frustration to concern as the club experienced more uneven play in the month of June. Grant McAuley breaks down the recent trends for the club and the rest of MLB, which is also producing decidedly different results in 2024. While the bats have been searching for answers, Max Fried, Chris Sale and the Braves rotation continue to give the club a chance to win with solid pitching. How long can the pitching staff keep up its current level of production? When will the Atlanta lineup find its footing? Those are the questions the Braves are hoping to answer sooner than later. Meanwhile, MLB's gambling issues could be growing after a recent suspension and some abhorrent behavior some players continue to be subjected to. Can the league walk the fine line of keeping gambling out of the game while simultaneously courting the ad revenue the industry could provide the sport? Special guest Anthony Castrovince joins the show to discuss the addition of Negro Leagues statistics into the MLB record book. You'll hear about how this process played out and how the record keeping has evolved over the history of the sport. From the vault on this episode: Hear former Braves great Dale Murphy tell the story behind two of the most iconic baseball posters from the 1980s. Murph tells the story of "Power Alley" and "Stickball" from inception, to photo shoot, to finished product and reflects on the legacy of Nike's promotional efforts in baseball some four decades ago. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. With two weeks worth of games under their collective belts, the Atlanta Braves are sitting atop the NL East. Their biggest offensive contributor? None other that designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. Grant McAuley covered the big stories for this week in Braves baseball, including Ozuna's red-hot start and clutch hitting down in Miami, the loss of Spencer Strider, who underwent season-ending elbow surgery, how Atlanta will approach filling the void in rotation, and what the rest of the rotation needs to do in order to stabilize the pitching staff. You'll also hear from several Braves who'll share their thoughts on Travis d'Arnaud's value to the team and impact on their winning ways. Former Braves great Dale Murphy joins the show to tell the story of two iconic Nike posters from the 1980s -- Power Alley and Stickball. You'll hear the backstory of the creative process, the photo shoots, the tricks that made the posters an unforgettable part of Braves nostalgia, and even some abandoned plans for a baseball apparel line that would've predated today's crowded marketplace. On our trip around the big leagues, Ben Lindbergh of The Ringer joins the show to discuss the rash of elbow injuries facing MLB and what the league can do to curtail the troubling trend. Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in America. It is also the oldest team sport in North America. In fact, one of the earliest accounts of lacrosse comes from a document that was written in the early 17th-century, but the sport was clearly around before that time. We also know that the document recognizes the First Nations people first played it across Canada over 500 years ago. Each nation had its own version of “Stickball”, later changed to Lacrosse. “La Crosse” (The Stick), but they all played it to thank the Great Spirit — called Gichi-manidoo in Anishinaabe. Dr. Grant Garcia discusses injuries that apply to lacrosse, and some of the signs to look for when they're not so obvious. As he says…” he rather be safe than sorry.” Especially when it pertains to neck injuries. It's a show that is beneficial to coaches, parents, and fellow teammates. It's not just about the injuries, but the love of the sport. These shows are not to discourage playing sports, in fact, there are countless benefits to playing team sports, but we should be aware of some of the injuries and be prepared for them as they occur. Now get out there and play. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nyseasportstalk/support

Mobility and Safety Outreach Manager for the Roadwork NOLA program,David Lee Simmons, and transportation planner and transit program coordinator with the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission,Samuel Buckley, tell us more about the increasing interest in bicycling. The 4th annual Tulane Gulf South Indigenous Studies Symposium is just around the corner, and this year's theme explores the notion of “culture” and the myriad ways it's practiced in contemporary Native communities. Immigrant and ethnic historian at Tulane University, Dr. Laura D. Kelley, tells us more about this year's symposium, titled Sassafras, Stickball, and Stories: Indigenous Cultures of the Gulf South. “If you wanna see women go to war, I would say come to Choctaw, Mississippi!” – Chalena Marcus Billy from the Pearl River Ohoyo Team 2021 Stickball Champions Welcome to a new episode of Native ChocTalk's Part 2 of “Stickball, Little Brother of War: Mississippi Choctaws, Mark Williams & Chalena Marcus Billy Listen to the episode here! https://tinyurl.com/ybbkdhvy In part 1, stickball player, expert and stickmaker, Brenner Billy taught us about the history, culture and spirituality around the historic American Indian game of stickball. Part 2 is here, y'all! And I know you'll enjoy hearing from both Mark Williams, award-winning Choctaw filmmaker and champion stickball player, Chalena Marcus Billy. Mark looks back at how he raised money to make films by having an Indian taco sale, how he practiced horror filmmaking on his friends (and they survived), all about his comics titled, “The adventures of Josie the Frybread Kid” and about his success today earning awards for his incredible films. And last but not least, this ohoyo powerhouse, Chalena tells us what it's like to play in this historic and dangerous game, about the difference between stickball in Oklahoma vs. Mississippi and how as a woman, her desire to play stickball derives from a drive deep within that differs from that of her male counterparts. But even this seemingly indestructable champion had a tender perspective on how the loss of the most important person in her life affected her world, yet made her the person and stickball player she is today. When you think of certain sports like football, you think rough, tough and full of injuries. But that's nothing compared to say, rugby. Now THAT's a dangerous sport. But have you heard of a sport that involved a goal to settle disputes between tribes, and sometimes so fierce that it ended in death? The players of this game prepared by painting their bodies and limiting their diet, drinking Spanish Tea made of bark from red oak trees. And by not eating and sleeping for days and nights, they'd be filled with rage by the time the game kicked off. As many as 1,000 men from opposing tribes screamed their war cries to the incessant beating of drums. With no protective gear, no referees and very few rules, the game began. The preciseness of thrusting a minuscule ball onto a narrow pole can only be performed by generations of warriors inheriting and honing their skill and focus - that same focus of those who hunted the stealthy deer and the running chukfi (rabbit). The game lasted for days, from sun-up to sundown. Whoever won, won not just the dispute, but also their tribe and oppositions' respect. Today in part 1 of “Stickball, Little Brother of War” we discuss the spiritual and hard-core game of stickball, where even as recent as 1937, an eyewitness named Frank Grall was interviewed from Wewoka, Oklahoma while watching a stickball game saying, “…but when the first fellow got the ball, some player hit him over the head with a club, peeling the skin until it hung over his ear. The battle was so fierce, that when the game was ended and one side had been chased from the ground, the pool was perfectly bloody.” (The pool he's talking about is where the women would pull the men from the game and place them in pools of water to try to get them to regain consciousness.) He then said, “This was the last Indian ball game played in such a brutal manner, for the Government took notice of such brutality and sent deputy marshals to the games to prevent such cruelty. At this game I saw players bite one another.” Yep. Definitely rough. As we talk about this historic and spiritual game that's still played today, who better to talk about it than expert, Brenner Billy (Choctaw). He comes from a long line of stickball players, he's damn good at the game, and even he's a master at making the sticks – a skill passed down to him by family. And stay tuned for part 2 of “Stickball, Little Brother of War” where I'll meet with both a filmmaker who documents the world of stickball, as well as one very strong Chahta oyoho (Choctaw lady) and total stickball rock star. In addition to being more ethical, knowledgeable, hands-on, intelligent, and fun to work with, Matt also never royally screwed over John Beilein in a failed bid to upset Michigan's basketball program. ORIGINS OF THE GAME (starts at 0:45) Composite of the Harvard-McGill game, courtesy of the McCord Museum at McGill Everything you think you know is wrong. Field and town games were purposely ignored through history, which puts a shroud over our records of these games going on in myriad forms throughout the Middle Ages. The American tradition comes out of England. We track the history of baseball because they're linked and it got there first. "Football" refers to all the soccer- and rugby-like games played with a large ball as opposed to "Handball" which used a smaller ball or "Stickball" from which tradition comes field hockey. Football at Michigan: a guy named William Gailey, who also wrote "The Yellow and the Blue," and also Cal's alma mater, organized these 11-on-11 games that might have been more like soccer. There was also the tradition of "The Rush" which was a violent diag battle where the goal was to throw the other team over their fence. Muscular Christianity and the cultural shift toward a mass appreciation athletics. The athletics movement on campus: students organize sports as they like, create their own athletics association.   Pushball on Ferry Field in 1907. [UM Bentley Library] Rutgers-Princeton: 100% soccer, but the rugby-like game (and things similar to rush) were around. Michigan wanted to play a soccer-like against Cornell but the game was canceled by Cornell. When does it become football? Rules tensions between places that had rugby- or soccer-like traditions but all called it "football." Harvard-McGill play a game of rugby with a round ball and 15-on-15, had a second game scheduled that was 13-on-13, and it's not clear if it was played. "Food poisoning" means they got drunk. Return game is in Montreal, has an oblong ball, is a very plausible argument that it was rugby. Craig thinks it was still 15-on-15 but it was definitely more like football than soccer. Harvard had a hard time finding opponents for their "Boston Rules" game—found Tufts. Walter Camp: a situational extremist, as opposed to the open, moving rugby game. What helped Camp win out was everyone was mad at Dartmouth, the extremist who wanted a game more like The Rush. Banned things like dressing like an orc from Warcraft. 2. THE FIRST GAME (starts at 50:00) A drawing of the first game from the UM Palladium, 1880 [courtesy UM Bentley Library] Camp's rules win out in late 1878, Michigan gets challenged by Racine and delays until next spring. Michigan puts on blue belts and blue hose and heads out to play a timed game of 11-on-11. We discuss the rules and the method of scoring a touchdown. Michigan dominates play, scoring the first TD in the first inning (half) but not converting it despite the Michigan fans and their umpire saying the ball went over the crossbar—like that's never going to happen again. Irving K. Pond scores another TD late and DeTarr makes the extra point good for a 1-0 victory (in modern terms it's 13-0). 3. THE TEAM AND THE TORONTO GAME (starts at 26:04) THREE-QUARTER BACK Edmond H. Barmore (IN): First quarterback in football. Son of a steamboat builder, director of the athletic association, graduated in 1881. Mustache came along. Moved to LA and got into the transfer business. Feted the 1901 team. Check out this mustache progression: HALFBACK Charles E. Campbell (Detroit): Dad was a regent and law prof, caught the opening kickoff. Studied under Angell, big-time lawyer and civic leader in Detroit. Trustee of Mariner’s Church where I volunteer, where there’s a picture of him. HALFBACK (didn’t make Chi trip): Collins Johnson (GR): Surgeon at Harper’s Hospital (overlooking the grounds where they played Toronto). Then was the district surgeon in GR for the railway. Made breakthroughs in Typhoid Fever at his lab in later life. RUSHER John Chase (AA): Doctor, later General John Chase, Colorado National Guard commander. Dad was one of the first treasurers at Mich. Founded Denver Medical College. Known for leading troops against strikers: Ludlow Massacre was under his men. RUSHER Irving K. Pond (AA): Engineer, son of a state senator. Architect who built a lot of the Arts & Crafts architecture in Chicago, including the Home Insurance Building, Hull House, The Lillie House, and the Lorado Taft Midway Studios, the Oregon Public Library, and the Union at Purdue and the Michigan Union. Rival of Frank Lloyd Wright. Also an amateur acrobat. RUSHER Richard DePuy (North Dakota): on the 1878-1882 teams. Brother William was on the team one year. Became a physician in Jamestown, part of a company that became Johnson & Johnson. RUSHER/KICKER/CAPTAIN David DeTarr (Iowa): First captain. Became a doctor in his hometown. LEFT SIDE Randolph Thomas “RT” Edwards (AA): Father of Tom Edwards, the star tackle for the 1925 team. Owned the rule book (family brought a rugby rule book from Warwickshire, England). Lawyer and teacher and manager of a Seeds sales office. LEFT SIDE Frank Reed (AA): Nothing available. RIGHT SIDE Jack A. Green (Austin, TX): Nothing available. RIGHT SIDE William W. Hannan (Dowagiac): Best athlete at the school, recruited by the athletic association but liked Law better. Became a real estate developer, top real estate guy in Detroit in the 1900s. GOALKEEPER Charles S. Mitchell (Minnesota): Newspaper publisher/editor, editor in chief of the Washington Herald. Founder of the Athletic Association at UM. Captain of the senior football team. Attorney when he graduated. FORWARD Frank Gates Allen (Aurora, IL): Moline Plow Company and the bank in Moline, Illinois. His home is the Moline Board of Education building. SUB William B. Calvert (AA) SUB Albert Pettit (AA): Real estate in Baton Rouge, LA: Grandfather of the basketball Hall of Famer. We don't know how the Toronto game was organized but it took place on the ballpark they had recently built in an attempt to get what would become the Detroit Tigers into the majors. Two-hundred and fifty students got on a train that morning. The game started late because Michigan didn't arrive on time. It ended in a 0-0 tie. Little is known about the play because the newspapers covering it focused on the rules. -------------------------------------------- MUSIC: "Meet Me in Chicago"—Buddy Guy "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General"—Gilbert & Sullivan “Across 110th Street” THE USUAL LINKS Helpful iTunes subscribe link General podcast feed link What's with the theme music?  It was fine to be learned and study but you really need to be a man.

Nat, Mike and Dan have whole lot of love for baseball, so much so that this episode takes an almost actually serious look at this season seeing as it's just a couple of days old. Domn't worry, they argue and make offensive jokes too so there's a semblence of normality... In other news: We’re entering the final stretch of the NHL regular season and the Toronto Maple Leafs have missed the playoffs for the 7th straight season; Twitter is ablaze with fans calling for GM Brian Burke to go; the Bulls have become the first team to make the NBA playoffs, continuing to top the East, although the OKC Thunder aren’t far behind; on Sunday the Thunder beat the Heat in a game many are predicting was the tipping point that pushed Kevin Durant into the lead for the race for MVP; Dennis Rodman is going to jail unless he coughs up 860,000 in child support; NFL Rule change! The regular season will now be like the post season. A field goal from the off is no longer enough to win! What’s the point? It’s just another rule for the Saints to break… No corrections and clarifications this week but a serious helping from the Bodeans Mailbag and much, much more...
