Shotgun Spratling and Kasey Kazliner return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to wrap up the 2025 USC baseball season with Trojans' head coach Andy Stankiewicz joining the show to provide insights as we look back at a second season on the road for the Trojans with the team not having access to their under-construction home field on campus. Stankiewicz talks about the Trojans' disappointment with their final two games after being in the Corvallis Regional final and what he talked about with the players after the final game. He also discusses the building blocks the team continues to stack brick by brick as it tries to re-establish itself as one of college baseball's premier programs. The Trojans' head coach also discusses potentially taking a different path in the NCAA transfer portal from the last couple of seasons after pointing out USC has to get stronger on the mound to be able to compete for a chance to improve upon the 2025 season next year. After talking with Stankiewicz, Shotgun and Kasey take a look back at the regional and towards the future of the USC program. They also hand out their end-of-season awards. From best hitter and pitcher to most impactful newcomer , Kazliner and Spratling discuss some of the top individual performers and moments of the long season. Shotgun and Kasey then close by discussing the areas where they believe the Trojans need to attack to make improvements before opening the new Dedeaux Field next spring. Steve Poltz is a singer and songwriter originally from Nova Scotia, raised in Southern California, and now making his home in Nashville. He made a name for himself first with his band The Rugburns and later, more famously, as co-writer with Jewel including the mega hit “You Were Meant For Me.” If you are of a certain age, you will remember the video for that song. A spare room with Jewel playing guitar and a dude dressed like 1996. That dude is Steve Poltz himself! Fifteen-year-old me would be losing his mind. Hell, 44-year-old me is losing his mind at this opportunity. Steve's latest record Stardust & Satellites is outstanding! Everyone, it is my great honor to bring you my conversation with Steve Poltz! The song you are hearing in this episode is "It's Baseball Season" from Steve's excellent record Stardust & Satellites. We are three weeks into the Major League Baseball season and one of the main story lines of the nascent season is the bats. On the second day of the season, the New York Yankees hit 9 home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers. Many of the Yankees players were using a new type of bat – shaped kind of like a bowling pin. This bat bulges at the center and narrows at the end. It’s called a torpedo bat. Of course, traditionalists don’t love the new bat (let’s be real, some people hate change). But Major League Baseball says the bats do meet regulations … which say bats must be “a smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length.” How does the torpedo bat work? Fortunately for us, there is a wealth of baseball knowledge in our own backyard to answer that question. The Sports Science Laboratory at Washington State University "specializes in the dynamics of bat and ball collisions." Guest: Lloyd Smith, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of the Sports Science Laboratory Links: NPR: How do 'torpedo bats' work? We asked baseball physicists to explain Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! This episode focuses on Major League Baseball, as the traditional Opening Day is set for shortly after this show's release. Despite having two games in Japan, most teams start now amidst a changing sports climate. The A's and Rays are playing this season in minor league ballparks. 10 teams are having their games broadcast and produced by MLB. Payroll disparity is at an all-time high. Despite this, attendance was up last season, and the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees drew fantastic ratings. Scott Miller has covered MLB for 30 years. For years, he wrote for CBS Sports and Bleacher Report. He is a frequent contributor to MLB Network Radio on Sirius/XM as well as San Diego Padres broadcasts. In this episode, Miller discusses the pending labor contract expiration and the ramifications of that. He also talked about the Rays and A's stadium dilemma,s offering potential solutions.
Bob and Dave have their weekly chat with El Hombre Michael Bradley to get his thoughts on his excitement of the start of baseball season, his disdain for the UFL, the upcoming NFL Draft, NIL’s effect on NCAA March Madness tournament, and Russell Wilson signing with the Giants, they break down what Cal Raleigh’s contract extension with the Mariners means for the fan base and the future of the team, and they wrap up the show by finding out what we learned today!
