Ever since its debut 10 years ago, the wood-bat baseball team the Portland Pickles have been delighting fans with its summer games that feature quirky fan appreciation events, such as a “Redhead Appreciation Night” for the season opener on May 27, or one honoring bee sting survivors. In addition to its 10th anniversary and winning the West Coast League championship last year, the Pickles are celebrating another milestone. Tomorrow marks the debut of the Portland Bangers, a new soccer team the Pickles are launching. Like the Pickles, the Bangers also feature collegiate-level athletes playing during the summer months. Jorge Villafaña is the head coach of the Portland Bangers and a retired professional soccer player who helped the Portland Timbers win its first-ever Major League Soccer championship in 2015. Steve Poltz is a singer and songwriter originally from Nova Scotia, raised in Southern California, and now making his home in Nashville. He made a name for himself first with his band The Rugburns and later, more famously, as co-writer with Jewel including the mega hit “You Were Meant For Me.” If you are of a certain age, you will remember the video for that song. A spare room with Jewel playing guitar and a dude dressed like 1996. That dude is Steve Poltz himself! Fifteen-year-old me would be losing his mind. Hell, 44-year-old me is losing his mind at this opportunity. Steve's latest record Stardust & Satellites is outstanding! Everyone, it is my great honor to bring you my conversation with Steve Poltz! The song you are hearing in this episode is "It's Baseball Season" from Steve's excellent record Stardust & Satellites. This episode focuses on Major League Baseball, as the traditional Opening Day is set for shortly after this show's release. Despite having two games in Japan, most teams start now amidst a changing sports climate. The A's and Rays are playing this season in minor league ballparks. 10 teams are having their games broadcast and produced by MLB. Payroll disparity is at an all-time high. Despite this, attendance was up last season, and the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees drew fantastic ratings. Scott Miller has covered MLB for 30 years. For years, he wrote for CBS Sports and Bleacher Report. He is a frequent contributor to MLB Network Radio on Sirius/XM as well as San Diego Padres broadcasts. In this episode, Miller discusses the pending labor contract expiration and the ramifications of that. He also talked about the Rays and A's stadium dilemma,s offering potential solutions.
Bob and Dave have their weekly chat with El Hombre Michael Bradley to get his thoughts on his excitement of the start of baseball season, his disdain for the UFL, the upcoming NFL Draft, NIL’s effect on NCAA March Madness tournament, and Russell Wilson signing with the Giants, they break down what Cal Raleigh’s contract extension with the Mariners means for the fan base and the future of the team, and they wrap up the show by finding out what we learned today!
You may not be aware, but the MLB season is two games old. The Dodgers and Cubs opened the season on Monday in Tokyo at 3a, PDT. Now the teams come home to resume their exhibition schedule. Make sense to you? Nope, and it didn't make sense last year either! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
