We had three days to get back to planning, to searching for a long term rental, the perfect permanence we had dreamed of back in the states. Well, that I had dreamed of. And you know what we did? Absolutely nothing. We got no closer to finding that spot. In fact, our short stay in the concrete box was the most uneventful of our many, many rentals to come. Both Roxy and Echo were a pair of panting, blonde rugs on the rickety wooden porch. Each would occasionally nip at a buzzing insect. They looked about as miserable as could be. I wondered if they would shed some of their coats. I wondered if they would eventually adapt. If Krista and I would. In just a little over a month, we had gotten rid of everything. Through estate and online sales, donations, and gifting to family and friends, we were left with two giant suitcases, two rescue labradors, Roxy and Echo, and their special airline approved travel crates.Follow us for updates!@theghostmodernist@thekristamethodSupport the show
When we sold everything, house, cars, Funko Pops and vinyl records, we didn't know what to expect. But it wasn't this.Maybe we'd watched too much House Hunters, or read too many Eat pray love imitations, but we thought that the hard part was behind us: the selling, the packing, the crush of leaving our dogs at a Miami loading dock.We thought that finding a house would be the easy part. That the biggest decision we we going to have to make was to choose which part of paradise we wanted to call home. How wrong we were. This is the story of too many rentals, and even more mosquito bites. Of having unforgettable experiences, and the constant struggle to find our place in a foreign country. This is Sweet Gringo Blood.Starting July 15th, join us as we recount the our clumsy navigation through the unimaginable beauty and total frustration that is Costa Rica.Support the show

On today's show, Krista tries to scare Drew with tales from the (supposedly) most haunted roads in America. Inspired by our recent decision to relocate, we discuss these ghostly highways and byways, while simultaneously making fools of ourselves. The transition has put Drew into overdrive, while he struggles to pack boxes, paint the house, and be more than a shell of a man, while Krista attempts to keep him upright during the episode. Along the way, we cover the Boy Scouts of America, gender roles, Aaron Carter, and a very lost Port-a-Potty. Two English professors. Nerds. Horror lovers. And they married each other. In light of the current state of affairs, let’s take a trip into the microscopic horror of pandemics. Today we will explore the horror of virus and disease, and more importantly, what the fear of those things do to humanity. MONSTER OF THE WEEK!Maybe it's seeing the fragility of life, the fleeting impermanence, that cultivates a hyperawareness of a coworkers change in attitude. And these tells, however subtle, might raise the hackles on even a casual acquaintance's neck. On September 20th, 2014, at a nursing home in North Augusta, SC, those subtle changes in Tammy Kingery’s behavior seemed to kick off a chain of events that would ultimately create far more questions than answers, and leave a seemingly idyllic family without their mother.JOIN THE SCARELOVE SOCIETY!https://www.patreon.com/drscareloveSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/drscarelove)
On November 5th, 1975, Travis Walton and his co-workers see a saucer-shaped object hovering in the sky Walton approaches the object when a beam of light appears from the saucer, lifts him in the air, then throws him down and knocks him unconscious. The rest of the men are terrified and drive away, leaving Walton there.Walton wakes up in an unknown location, observed by three creatures unlike anything he has ever seen before. He fights them...If this sounds like a movie, you’re right. But what you may not know, is that it’s based on a true story. Not only are UFO sightings common, but those who claim they’ve been abducted often have eerily similar descriptions of not only the aircrafts, but the creatures, as well as claims of what is done to them… and how they’re experimented on.We know the truth is out there. His name was Howard Phillips Lovecraft, a controversial figure, but arguably one of the most important voices in the evolution of the horror genre. Was he a simple creator of fiction, of stories and novels that bleed into our consciousness, or was he something more?Did he peek behind the facade of what we hold true? Was he pulling at the threads of the very fabric of our world, only to reveal what truly awaits us?Fictionalist or Prophet. Madman or Genius. We will dig into not only the life of HP Lovecraft, but major aspects of the mythos he either created, or simply brought to the attention of humanity, on this episode of Dr. Scarelove.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/drscarelove)
Our first foray into true crime. Join us for this bruiser of a story. In 1980, The Straits Times, the largest newspaper in Singapore, covered the Tan Family for a period of years, just after the murder of their children, the heart wrenching funeral, and the killer’s later taunting of the grieving parents. The brutality of the murders was unprecedented and the Times described them as the most inhuman in Singapore’s crime history. The police were visibly shaken, sickened by the murders, as nothing like this had come across their desks before. Who killed these four kids? Who left their bodies in a way that seems to puzzle people more than the crime itself? Anymore importantly, why would anyone want to murder four innocent children in such a horrific fashion?Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/drscarelove)
