Good for you! Thanks for listening, and thanks for helping others discover the stories we love to share!H. P. Lovecraft was an unusual man. He wrote more than 60 short stories, plus some novels and novellas, but he also penned somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 letters to friends and fans. Some of those letters were reportedly up to 50 pages long and he sometimes skipped meals to pay for postage to mail them.During his lifetime, Howard Phillips Lovecraft lived in relative obscurity. Though he wrote all those letters to other writers and his small but dedicated fans his stories were mostly published in pulp magazines, earning little money and he got almost no recognition. Sad story, but if you think that's sad, when H. P. Le Cauchemar d'Innsmouth (titre original : The Shadow over Innsmouth) est un roman court d'horreur fantastiquede l'écrivain américain Howard Phillips Lovecraft publié en 1936.
A csápfejű istenek ezernyi feldolgozásban kísértik a világot, pont ahogy ő elképzelte.

Re-Animator (1985), From Beyond (1986), and Dagon (2001) Bringing the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft to the screen is not an easy task. Much of the horror Lovecraft talked about wasn't described or explained too much, leaving it up to the reader. But when director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and writer Dennis Paoli got together to adapt Lovecraft's 1922 story "Herbert West - Re-Animator" for a movie, they changed cinema forever. Not only did they show us more than Lovecraft would ever dream of, they created a perfect blend of outrageous horror, gore, and bizarre imagery that would immediately put them in the horror history books. The following year, they took another short story, From Beyond, first published in 1934, and showed even more strange, bizarre, and gooey things we'd seen before, going beyond then what the short story told us. Then 15 years later, these three deranged creators returned to Lovecraft to take us to a fishing village filled with very unusual citizens, in 2001's Dagon. While Gordon's filmography might not be filled with classic after classic, when he hit a home run, usually he was working with Yuzna and Paoli. Films mentioned in this episode: Black Gloves (2017), Color Out of Space (2019), Dagon (2001), Dust Devil (1992), From Beyond (1986), Halloween (1978), Hardware (1990), Lord of Tears (2013), Re-Animator (1985), Shrews Nest (2014), To Let (2006), Witching and Bitching (2013)

Lovecraft. Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author of fantasy, horror and science fiction. He is notable for blending elements of science fiction and horror; and for popularizing "cosmic horror": the notion that some concepts, entities or experiences are barely comprehensible to human minds, and those who delve into such risk their sanity – which describes well what you are about to hear. Lovecraft has become a cult figure in the horror genre and is noted as creator of the "Cthulhu Mythos," a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a "pantheon" of nonhuman creatures, as well as the famed Necronomicon, a grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works typically had a tone of "cosmic pessimism," regarding mankind as insignificant and powerless in the universe – again, something you will hear in “The Call of Cthulhu”. Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, and his works, particularly early in his career, have been criticized as occasionally ponderous, and for their uneven quality. Nevertheless, Lovecraft's reputation has grown tremendously over the decades, and he is now commonly regarded as one of the most important horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting an influence that is widespread, though often indirect. This is another episode in which I will be treating the source material as if I've been paid to narrate the audiobook – so I will be leaving all language by the author exactly as it was written. There are a couple of racist terms used in the story which I would never utter in my own conversations or even give my brain permission to think of as anything less than inappropriate, but they are used in the original text and I feel it is best to keep history as it is rather than trying to reinvent it, or cover it up. Just know that the words and thoughts are obviously not mine, but those of the author, H.P. Lovecraft, during a time almost 100 years ago when such terms were not as divisive as they are today.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“The Call of Cthulhu” by H.P. In 1928 a local columnist, Vrest Orton, wrote an article for the Brattleboro Reformer entitled, “A Weird Writer is in Our Midst.” The column was about H.P. Lovecraft. Howard Phillips Lovecraft was a writer from Providence, Rhode Island who would later become well-known for his science fiction/fantasy/horror stories. Here's the story of how the Brattleboro area played a prominent role in one of Lovecraft's better known stories...and later became a full-length movie...
In this H.P Lovecraft classic, we listen to a story told by a nameless figure. A story about a certain strange man called Arthur Jermyn. As the title suggests, we listen to the life of this Arthur Jermyn and the peculiarities of both himself and his family. We hear about the family members and their strange unique obsessions with Gods and amazing mystical artefacts located far within the jungles of Africa. We are also told of what this ancient artefact did to the Jermyns, and how they all met their suspicious ends. Almost like they never existed. If you enjoyed listening to this episode or the podcast as a whole, feel free to rate the show and share your thoughts. It means a lot. One of the all time H.P Lovecraft favourites. Dagon tells the story about a mans retelling of his experiences as a WW1 naval prisoner of war who escaped alone, only to find the ocean vanished, along with himself marooned on a mysterious island that has a sinister quality to it. And as he explores his new surroundings, he finds a giant stone Monolith where the ancient symbols carved into it tells a story of some kind of ancient man, that something else finds him, that brings him to madness. If you enjoyed listening to this episode or the podcast as a whole, feel free to rate the show and share your thoughts. On Thursday May 26th, 2022 The Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon and guest Maximilian Paul will review and discuss Howard Phillips Lovecraft's tour-d-force horror novel “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward” written in 1927 and published posthumously in 1941. This macabre epic has influenced the works of Stephen King and Clive Barker and has inspired two film versions, which we will also review and discuss. The Charles Dexter Ward story deals primarily with traditional supernatural themes: Alchemy, Necromancy, Medieval black magic, vampirism and demonic possession. The central character Charles Dexter Ward is a young scholar in Providence Rhode Island in the 1920s who becomes fascinated with the history of his notorious 17th century ancestor Joseph Curwen. The wizard Curwen had moved from Salem to Providence to avoid the witchcraft trails in 1699. He was an alchemist fascinated with a necromantic version of palinogenesis; raising the dead from their cremated remains. He with two equally sinister European sorcerers began grave robbing; collecting the remains of dead sages and scientists to learn their secrets. They also discovered secrets of immortality. This worked against Curwen in Providence where he showed no signs of age for forty years. He did manage to marry so as to leave a bloodline so that he could return – which he did in1928 when he possessed his great-great grandson Charles Dexter Ward through a strange portrait in his old house which young Ward had moved into. Young Ward is possessed by Curwen and eventually finds his grave and brings him back to life. But Old Curwen then murders young Charles and usurps his modern identity. However the Ward family physician Dr. Willet, and Ward's father have Curwen (believing him to be Ward) committed to an Insane asylum. And that is where the story begins. So stay with us for all the inner secrets of what many consider to have been Lovecraft's best horror novel.
