Break 1: GCPS Hiring STORY 1: Lake Lanier Association Completes Phase Three of Shoreline Protection Program  Lake Lanier’s shoreline just got a little more secure—5,280 feet of it, to be exact. The Lake Lanier Association (LLA) announced the completion of the third phase of Project Armor, its ongoing effort to fight erosion caused by heavy boat traffic. This phase reinforced 16 badly eroded areas with rip rap, a method that helps absorb wave energy and protect the shoreline. Over the past 12 years, the LLA has armored 3 miles of shoreline, saving 28 islands and areas from disappearing into the lake. Why does it matter? These islands aren’t just pretty—they’re vital. STORY 2: Hilscher wins another term in Suwanee City Council  Suwanee City Councilwoman Beth Hilscher is sticking around for another four years after edging out David Martinez in Tuesday’s runoff for the Post 4 seat. Unofficial results show Hilscher pulled in 734 votes to Martinez’s 638. Suwanee wasn’t the only Gwinnett city with a runoff—Duluth voters also hit the polls to decide the Post 3 City Council race between incumbent Lamar Doss and challenger Marlene Denise Tucker. In Suwanee, it’s Hilscher who’s celebrating. STORY 3: Police aim to deter youth gun violence in slain officer's memory   Gwinnett County police have rolled out a new program aimed at steering kids away from guns while honoring Officer Antwan Toney, who was tragically killed in the line of duty seven years ago. Called Toney’s Program, it launched in September and focuses on first-time or minor handgun offenses among juveniles. The program, named after Toney—who was shot by a teen in 2018—pairs participants with mentors for a seven-week curriculum and three months of follow-up support. Families are involved too, attending sessions alongside their kids. Teens hear from gun violence victims and learn conflict resolution, emotional awareness, and nonviolent decision-making. Jet Horne, once a senior on South Gwinnett High’s 2022-23 team, was convicted last week on a laundry list of charges—aggravated assault, firearm possession, criminal damage, even hijacking a car. The incidents? Three separate attacks between December 2024 and May 2025. In December, Horne ambushed Talal Ansah, shooting him eight times as he returned home from work. Ansah barely survived. Then, in March, Horne fired into Timair Walker’s car, injuring a neighbor with a stray bullet. By May, he escalated—holding Maalik Leitch at gunpoint, stealing his BMW, and leading police on a chase. Ballistics tied it all together, sealing Horne’s fate. “This was a violent, senseless series of crimes,” said DA Patsy Austin-Gatson. “We’re grateful for justice and continue to pray for the victims.” STORY 5: BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Dacula Keeps Rolling with Lopsided Win Dacula cruised past Jackson County on Tuesday night, dominating with an 82-58 win in boys basketball. Just off the old Natchez Trace, in the quiet woods of Tennessee, stands a broken marble column marking the grave of Meriwether Lewis. The monument was meant to honor one of America's greatest explorers, but its shattered form also reflects a life cut short under circumstances that remain unsolved more than two centuries later. In 1804, Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery across thousands of miles of uncharted wilderness. They mapped rivers, documented new species, and forged fragile relationships with Native Nations, returning home as national heroes. Yet only a few years later, while traveling east on government business, Lewis stopped at a frontier inn called Grinder's Stand. Before dawn, gunfire rang out. Others pointed to inconsistencies in the testimonies, the absence of eyewitnesses, and the violence of the scene to argue that he was murdered. Over the years, theories have ranged from robbery on a lawless road to political assassination, while modern scholars have even suggested his death may have been linked to malaria or another untreated disease. On August 24, 2012, a Vietnam veteran who had been staying at the Lake Lanier Club Apartments off Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville, Georgia with his daughter and grandchildren, was taking a walk through the woods behind the complex. The man liked taking nature walks, and he was also following up on a report that he had made to the apartment management about a missing manhole cover. He later told police that he wanted to see if it had been replaced yet. It was around 7:30 pm in the evening, and still almost full daylight, and when the man paused near a stream bed, he saw something disturbing...something that he at first thought was a mannequin. Upon closer inspection, he realized that he was looking at a dead body. He called 911 and told them that a young lady, about 18 or 19 years old, was dead and looked like she had been dead for two or three days. The young woman was 16-year-old Hannah Truelove, a student at Gainesville High School. She had been missing since the night before. And even though her exact cause of death has not been revealed, police said she died a “violent death." She had been stabbed multiple times and left in the stream bed a quarter mile away from home; her flip flop was found a few yards away, tangled in some branches. Rain, shine, freezing cold—it doesn’t matter. It’s her thing. Notre Dame Academy, a Marist Catholic school in Duluth, has spent 20 years building more than just academics. It’s a community—a village, really—where students are seen, known, and loved. Teacher Regan Jolley-Sherman felt it the moment she interviewed. From international potlucks to family picnics, Notre Dame celebrates its people. And while academics matter, Derucki’s focus is clear: raising empathetic, grounded leaders. STORY 2: Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Daniela Esteves is coming back to Gwinnett, and this time, she’s taking the reins as complex general manager of the Lawrenceville Arts Center. Most recently with the Kennedy Center in D.C., Esteves has done it all—programming, marketing, event management, you name it. She even spent a couple of years at Gas South District in Duluth before heading north. Lawrenceville’s Arts Center isn’t just a venue—it’s a hub for connection and culture. And with Esteves at the helm, it’s poised to thrive. STORY 3: Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community Dick Goodman wore many hats in his 83 years—city councilman, PR pro, photographer, library advocate, and the first chair of Suwanee’s Public Art Commission. But more than titles, he was a storyteller, a community builder, and a man who poured his heart into everything he touched. Goodman passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy that’s woven into the fabric of Suwanee. After moving to Suwanee in 2006, it didn’t take long for him to dive in. By 2009, he was on the City Council, later chairing the Gwinnett Library Board for eight years. Today, a room at the Suwanee library bears his name—a fitting tribute for someone who championed the power of stories. Even in his final hours, Goodman was at a Suwanee planning meeting, still giving back. His family is now raising funds to make the “Novel Idea” sculpture—a granite bench shaped like books—a permanent part of the library he loved so much. Solicitor General Lisamarie Bristol announced insufficient evidence to prosecute charges of reckless driving, unlawful use of a telecommunication device, and failure to obey signs, as the incidents occurred on private property. However, Guevara still faces federal immigration charges, with ICE questioning his legal status despite his work permit and ongoing efforts toward permanent residency. Guevara claims he is being targeted for his journalism, which has drawn local and national attention. STORY 2: Georgia Power to update energy forecasts amid uncertain demand Georgia Power's 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) faces scrutiny for overestimating energy demand, driven by the rapid growth of data centers. Critics, including environmental groups, argue the projections could leave ratepayers covering billions in stranded assets if demand falls short. Young allegedly got naked on a boat, argued with a 59-year-old man, punched him, and later threw a deep freezer at him, causing a head injury and knocking him into the lake. Deputies found Young hiding under a bed on his houseboat after he ignored their attempts to contact him. He was charged with six offenses, including aggravated assault, and released on bond on July 6. STORY 5: Robert Michener named Gateway85 CID's interim executive director The Gateway85 Community Improvement District (CID) appointed longtime employee Robert Michener as interim executive director following Emory Morsberger's resignation after nearly 20 years of involvement. Michener, with 17 years at Gateway85, previously served as director of operations, overseeing infrastructure, security, and landscaping projects. Board Chairman Shiv Aggarwal praised Morsberger's contributions and welcomed Michener's leadership during the transition. The CID will continue focusing on economic development, mobility, and quality of life improvements as it searches for a permanent leader. Michener expressed excitement about guiding the district's next phase of growth. Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Corps of Engineers reopening seven more Lake Lanier parks The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has partnered with Forsyth and Hall counties to reopen nearly all nine previously closed parks on Lake Lanier for the Fourth of July weekend. Six parks will operate under one-year agreements with the counties, while Burton Mill Park will temporarily open for the holiday weekend. This collaboration aims to provide recreational access while addressing staffing shortages that initially threatened to close 21 parks. Only two parks, Van Pugh North and South, will remain closed as hiring efforts continue to support long-term operations. STORY 2: NAACP accuses Gwinnett DA of mishandling shooting case, wants AG to reopen case A dispute has arisen over the Gwinnett DA's decision not to prosecute Alejandro Querales Morales, who shot Jalyne Evans-Jones through his door after she and her husband asked him to lower his music in August 2023. Evans-Jones, who survived with permanent injuries, and the NAACP claim the case was mishandled, citing lack of investigation and communication. The DA’s office argued there wasn’t enough evidence, pointing to a witness who claimed Evans-Jones' husband had a gun. The NAACP is urging Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr to reopen the case, alleging misconduct, though Carr’s office stated it lacks jurisdiction. Evans-Jones and her husband have also filed a civil lawsuit. STORY 3: Gwinnett Stripers partner with TeamSmile to provide free dental exams for local underserved children Underserved children in Gwinnett County will receive free dental exams and oral health education on July 8, thanks to a partnership between the Gwinnett Stripers, TeamSmile, Delta Dental, and Sun Life U.S. Held at Cooray Field, the event will feature pro athletes, mascots, and entertainment to create a fun atmosphere. Children with dental issues will be referred to TeamSmile’s Dental Home Project for long-term care. The SUV was last seen on June 6 when a subcontractor picked it up from a Snellville home to transport it out of state, but it never arrived. Many lakes across America have been fashioned in this way without causing hauntings. That's not true for Lake Lanier. What is it that makes this lake so haunted?
