This episode Nez brings you two films in the Dr. Hannibal Lecter universe. The Michael Mann 1986 film MANHUNTER and the 2002 Brett Rather film RED DRAGON.    Manhunter (1986) FBI criminal profiler Will Graham is called out of early retirement to assist on a serial murder case involving a killer known as the Tooth Fairy. Graham enlists the help of imprisoned serial killer and cannibal Dr Hannibal Lecktor, who is the reason Graham took an early retirement. Soon, Graham and the FBI are entangled in a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the Tooth Fairy, Lecktor and an interfering journalist.   Red Dragon (2002) Ex-FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton) is an expert investigator who quit the Bureau after almost losing his life in the process of capturing the elusive Dr. Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). After a series of particularly grisly murders, Graham soon realizes that the best way to catch this killer, known as the Tooth Fairy, is to find a way to get inside the killer's mind. For Graham, that means confronting his past and facing his former nemesis, the now-incarcerated Lecter.   Hit up E Society on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/ESocietyPodcast/ Check out our ESP Spotify For Creators feed: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/esoc E Society YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCliC6x_a7p3kTV_0LC4S10A E Society and Mac-Nez t-shirts Tee Public: http://tee.pub/lic/9ko9r4p5uvE X: @esocietypod @macnezpod @TheoZissou Instagram: @esocietypod @thezissou @macnezpod Nez and Taylor Blu-ray IG pages: @bluraynez @blurayterror TikTok: @esocietypod   Taylor and Nez new podcast: Old Dawg New Trickz https://open.spotify.com/show/319KRWiJfGpMbFBLTp6E8P

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This month is Masterclass Month at Catching Up On Cinema! September 2024 marks our 6th anniversary of podcasting, and to commemorate the occasion, we take a month to do a deep dive on a popular, long-lived movie franchise. For this year's Masterclass, we'll be reviewing the Hannibal Lecter series of films! Created by author Thomas Harris, Hannibal Lecter is a charismatic serial killer that, across multiple novels, films, and most recently, TV series, has consistently captivated global audiences since his inception in 1981. This week, our Masterclass continues with a review of Jonathan Demme's, The Silence of the Lambs (1991)! An adaptation of the second of Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter series of novels, Jonathan Demme's, The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is a critically acclaimed horror-thriller, and widely regarded as the best of the Lecter films. Massively influential, financially successful, and winner of 5 major Academy Awards (including Best Picture, the first and only horror film to do so), The Silence of the Lambs is a fantastic production by every metric. Starring Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, and Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, the latter of whom would go on to thoroughly own the role via 2 additional onscreen performances in the years to come, the film is brilliantly performed by all involved, with special mention being necessary for Ted Levine, whose utterly fearless performance as Jame “Buffalo Bill” Gumb, is particularly memorable. Beautifully directed by Demme, and shot by renowned cinematographer and frequent collaborator, Tak Fujimoto, and scored by Howard Shore, the film ably wields the potent one-two punch of being terrifically scripted and acted, while also boasting sumptuous visuals and technical flair. Once upon a Time in Cinema Der Filmpodcast

In this conversation, Maverick and Patrick discuss the film 'The Silence of the Lambs' and its standout elements. They highlight the impact of the character Hannibal Lecter, the tension-building in the plot, and the compelling development of the protagonist, Clarice Starling. They also touch on the power dynamics between Hannibal and Clarice, as well as the real-life inspirations behind the characters. The A plot is identified as the interactions between Clarice and Hannibal, while the B plot is Hannibal's escape plan. The main plot of the movie consists of three interconnected dependencies: tracking Buffalo Bill, capturing Buffalo Bill, and Clarice hunting Buffalo Bill. The B-plot is Hannibal Lecter's escape. The movie is unique in that it reveals the identity of the killer early on, focusing instead on the mystery of how everything is connected. The relationship between Clarice and Hannibal is complex, with Hannibal forcing Clarice to confront her fears and grow as a person. Clarice's motivation stems from her traumatic childhood experience of hearing lambs being slaughtered, which drives her to save lives. The ending is ominous, with Hannibal escaping and Clarice receiving a congratulatory call from him. In this conversation, Maverick and Patrick discuss the movie 'The Silence of the Lambs' and its impact. They touch on various themes, including the character development of Clarice Starling, the portrayal of Jack Crawford, the exploration of misogyny, the disturbing nature of Buffalo Bill, and the concept of coveting. They also discuss the cultural impact of the film and its enduring relevance.----------Highlights:0:01 The Impact of Hannibal Lecter8:45 Power Dynamics between Hannibal and Clarice15:42 Hannibal Lecter's Inspiration24:37 A Plot v B Plot35:20 Maverick's Thoughts On Plot Flow40:29 Clarice's Motivation: Saving Lives and Confronting Fears48:02 Dr. Chilton and Jack Crawford52:10 Mysogyny in Silence of the Lambs58:01 Jame Gumb as the villain "Buffalo Bill"1:02:34 Themes and Messages1:08:26 The Cultural Impact and Lasting Relevance----------Show Notes: 9 Points Rating System: https://www.alostplot.com/9-points/ Hannibal Lecter Cookbook: https://a.co/d/05xf31Xa #hanniballecter #silenceofthelambs #claricestarlight #alostplot #filmreview #horror #killer #buffalobill #fbi #bleatingofthelambs #escape #serial #scary #classic #culturalimpact #cookbook #insaneasylum #dr

FIFTEEN MINUTE FILM FANATICS

Anthony Hopkins has defined the popular conception of Hannibal Lector and, by extension, the erudite serial killer. But before The Silence of the Lambs there was Manhunter (1986), Michael Mann's thriller featuring the first appearance of Dr. Lecter (or Dr. Lecktor, as his name is spelled in the film). Mike loves it for its shots of men brooding over bodies of water as they make decisions and finds it “the most Michael Manliest” of the director's output; Dan thinks the setup is great but that the film becomes unruly and less tidy than the genre demands. There's a lot of bickering in this one, although both agree that Brian Cox is terrific. Manhunter is an adaptation of Red Dragon, Thomas Harris's 1981 bestseller. What scene work tools can be learned from martial arts? In this slightly unusual episode of Draft Zero (but also incredibly on brand), Stu and philosopher swordsperson Damon Young discuss how the lessons they have learned from martial arts can be applied to scenes. In particular, they discuss how approaching an opponent in a sword fight can be analogous to how characters approach conflict, such as: the distance between the characters, who chooses to engage first, how to feint, how to lure an attack by leaving yourself vulnerable, etc.  They reference classic conflicts such as Clarice interviewing Dr. Lecter in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, when Miranda puts down Andrea in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, and the final showdown between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul in the animated series THE CLONE WARS.  You can find Damon Young here: Website: https://www.damonyoung.com.au/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/damonayoung/ Mastodon: https://mas.to/@damonyoung As always: SPOILERS ABOUND. Some era defining performances and one of the most chilling thriller/horror/crime/drama films you'll ever watch. The lads get stuck into what genre this film actually is and spend a good old chunk of time discussing our two lead characters. With Oscar winning performances from Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter and Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, The Silence of the Lambs has some juicy themes for us to get stuck into. The representation of women in Cinema, the way in which the two interact with such enormous amounts of subtext. There's also an Oscar worthy performance from Jack who gives a world class Buffalo Bill impression. In terms of the scenes we had a field day discussing, well…where to begin? The initial interactions of Starling and Lecter, the horrifying Night vision chase in Buffalo Bill's house. We discuss how the ending might be the most horrifying scene of them all - but also how scenes that perhaps get a little less discussion have a far bigger impact than any of us realise. Once again we'll get stuck into the MVP's and discuss next weeks film. The pod as always is hosted by Ben Haines and Jack Hussey and produced by Alex Purdy.
