The Verge's Will Poor recently came home from vacation and discovered he had an insect problem. More specifically, his Sonos speaker had an insect problem. Will brings us the story of what really happened there, and what he discovered about how the animal kingdom — and the electronics world — works. After that, The Verge's Andru Marino tells us about his research on all things AI podcasts. He tells us why people are so hooked on NotebookLM's Audio Overviews, where these generated shows fall short, and what all us human podcasters could learn from the bots. Finally, The Verge's Jennifer Pattison Tuohy helps us answer a question on the Vergecast Hotline (call 866-VERGE11 or email vergecast@theverge.com!) all about smart lights. You never know where Joe will go!
Some truths never see the light. Gilbert has long believed that Jeremy Scott is responsible for more deaths than the state acknowledges—especially the unsolved murder of a cab driver in Intercession City. He’s tried everything he can think of to bring attention to the case, but the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not cooperate. Then, out of nowhere, a retired detective—the one who led the investigation that resulted in the arrest and eventual acquittal—reaches out to Gilbert, offering to help. The State finally agrees to reopen the cab driver case, but the lines between author and advocate blur. Gilbert works with Jeremy—an unlikely collaborator—to chase the truth and bring resolution to a family that’s waited decades. But justice doesn’t always wait. And it doesn’t always come. Google fixes a few bugs, gives a quick "how-to" around tabbed navigation, advises about on-page hash-links, and provides a great tutorial on using GA4 and GSC together. Google also increases its results return-speed by 67milliseconds. That's the good stuff this week however it wasn't a good week from a classic "Don't be Evil" perspective. This week Google complied with the executive cultural nullification order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, scrapped a pledge to only use AI for peaceful purposes, shuttered DEI initiatives, and complied with another executive cultural nullification order by removing significant holidays such as Black History, Pride, Holocaust Memorial Day from Google Calendars. We also cover other changes to Google's SERPs, Yahoo!'s AI Answers using "Learn More" links, Facebook whistleblowers, the Scarlett letters AI, the BBC's analysis of LLM written news, and Reddit blaming Google for the evils of weaker than expected growth. Compliance is a bug and that bug is now a feature.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/webcology/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
