On June 22, 2018, 35-year-old scientist Tristan Beaudette is brutally murdered in front of his two young daughters while camping in idyllic Malibu Creek State Park. The killing stuns the tight-knit, privileged community of Malibu.  More stunning? The fact that the cops anticipated the attack, but didn’t move to stop it. And the culprit they identify insists he’s being framed.  New episodes on Tuesdays. Hosted by Dana Goodyear (The New Yorker) and produced by Western Sound and Pushkin Industries. Ivy Insights

The Lost Hills podcast is an enthralling true crime series that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. The story, especially in the second season, is fascinating and constantly leaves you questioning what really happened. The verdict reached feels like the right one, supported by compelling recordings from the time of the crime and present-day interviews. Fred, one of the main characters, is particularly intriguing and is likely a sociopath. The question remains as to how many people Fred may have killed, suggesting that his second wife was not his only victim.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is how it captivates listeners by presenting different theories and allowing opinions to sway back and forth throughout the episodes. It keeps you engaged and invested in uncovering the truth behind the case. The storytelling is top-notch, with immersive narration that transports you into the world of Malibu and its dark secrets. The podcast also successfully blends themes of wilderness nature lovers, misanthropy, and police corruption into an engaging narrative.

While most aspects of The Lost Hills are excellent, there are a few drawbacks worth mentioning. Some listeners found certain characters, like CeCe, to be annoying or grating as the series progressed. Additionally, there were comments about a gun expert who appeared to lack accurate knowledge regarding firearms during certain episodes. These minor issues don't significantly detract from the overall quality of the podcast but are worth noting for anyone seeking a flawlessly executed production.

In conclusion, The Lost Hills is undoubtedly a standout podcast in its genre. It offers thought-provoking insights into a crime and law enforcement while telling a tragic story with skillful investigative journalism. The pacing may feel slow to some at times, but each episode provides closure on various aspects of the case while leaving enough room for twists and surprises. Dana Goodyear's narration brings this real-life murder mystery to life with depth and compassion. Highly recommended for true crime enthusiasts or anyone looking for a gripping and emotionally resonant podcast.
