Welcome back to The Conner & Smith Show! This week, Ryan Dean Halbrook and Stephen begin a brand-new three-part series exploring the complete film career of one of our favorite actors of all time — James Dean.We start where it all began with East of Eden, Elia Kazan's emotionally explosive 1955 adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel that introduced James Dean to the world and instantly changed movie acting forever.Raw, vulnerable, rebellious, and deeply human, Dean's performance as Cal Trask still feels startlingly modern — and this episode dives deep into why his work continues to resonate decades later. This is the first chapter in our James Dean trilogy series, where over the next three weeks we'll also explore Rebel Without a Cause and Giant — the only three films Dean completed before his tragic death at just 24 years old.If you love classic Hollywood, intense performances, film history, and actors who changed cinema forever… this episode is for you.
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of The Two Trees Podcast, we explore the story of Cain in Genesis 4, asking what it means to bear God's image outside the Garden—and what happens when that calling is rejected. Tracing Cain's motives, his refusal to master sin, and his failure as both priest and brother, we examine how the ground itself becomes a witness to his rebellion and how exile shapes the biblical theme of wandering “east of Eden.” Yet even in judgment, God's unexpected grace appears in the mysterious “mark of Cain,” not as punishment but protection. This episode challenges us to look beyond the mark itself and wrestle with the deeper question at the heart of the story: why does Cain choose violence, and why does God extend mercy to the undeserving?
We are getting into the real meat of this Fantastic Four run. The team is torn apart, unhappy, and Reed may or may not be turning into a meth cooker. What is happening to our favorite family? And can Alex Power and Power Pack save them? Probably not the direction that the writers would take, but you never know. So, what is this issue about? It is about a family that is putting up a fight against a variety of forces. It is them against the world. A towering inferno of force against a wonderful family. Or something. OK, let's turn this thing upside down and talk about the rock in the room. The uncomfortable truth is that this is really bad. Everybody is not in a good way. One in prison, one with no powers, one with no children, and one doing science. Just bad, bad, bad. Sometimes we just need to watch what is going to happen. You need to guard against the inevitable onslaught of time. You need to protect against the truth. You need to secure the facts. Do you know what I am saying? You should fight and seize the day. You should gather your friends and become a mob for justice. That's right. Gather your powers and unleash them against the forces of the world. I dare you. And then, when the world starts to beat you down, take heed of this advice. Cover up and protect your privates. It is the best thing to do in these situations. And then, at the end of the day, you can celebrate with your friends. You can be pleased to know that you are alive and not beaten to a pulp. Or, if you are beaten up, you can shake it off and be happy with the fact that your nose is not bleeding anymore. Bravo, you have made it to the end of this rant. Here is to the next one. The Book of Genesis series. Sermon by Charlie Reczek. Genesis 4:15-16 - "Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. So Cain went out from the Lord's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden."
The weekly message from Community Church Edinburgh. This talk is from Sunday, 15th Mar 2026.It is often implied that God turns his back on human sin, creating a chasm between God and humans. But the text at the end of chapter 3 has a markedly different tone, one of compassion and kindness, and the story continues with God being present to the humans, caring for them, and inviting them back home. Throughout our lives, we find ourselves separated from home, a place of safety, security, and rest. This longing we have to return home is expressed throughout the pages of the Bible and finds its ultimate expression in the birth of Jesus as the Gospel writers anticipate how this child will lead us home, into a place of true love and salvation. Join us as we begin Advent, preparing ourselves to receive the hope and peace that Jesus brings. I'll Be Home for Christmas. August 24, 1943, by Walter Kent (music) and James “Kim” Gannon (lyrics). Explore Cain and Abel's story, highlighting sin's predatory nature, God's transformative grace, and our calling as humanity's 'keepers' through love and conviction.
We once lived in Paradise, basking in the very presence of God. Eden was our dwelling place and God was our delight. But we went rogue and lost them both. Now East of Eden is where we live—fighting to find our way home. But the entrance is blocked. Pain and sorrow overshadow our searches that end in death. Futility is our shared experience. But it won't have the last word. There's a way home--an entrance back into God's presence. 3
Your actions reveal your allegiance: either to the way of Cain leading to death or to Christ leading to life.

Dr Thurman Hayes Jr. Preaching on Genesis 4:1-26 Sunday October 12, 2025 at First Baptist Church of Suffolk, VA.
This week Pastor Matt tackles your questions on shame, suffering, atonement theories and more.
We wrap up Genesis 3 by exploring the consequences of sin and how Jesus reverses the effects of Sin & Death.
In Genesis 4:1–16, Chris unpacks the first act of worship outside the garden and the fracture between two brothers. Why does God “regard” Abel's offering and not Cain's—and what does that reveal about trust, envy, and the myth of limited favor? We explore sin “crouching at the door,” the mark of Cain as a sign of mercy, and the call to be our brother's keeper. The episode ends by pointing to the better word of Jesus' blood—ending rivalry and inviting us to trust God's abundant grace east of Eden.
In this sermon, we will see that east of Eden, we are called to beware of the way of Cain and pursue the hope of Seth
Genesis 3 closes with justice and mercy side by side. We walk through God's words…
Genesis 3 closes with justice and mercy side by side. We walk through God's words to the serpent, the woman, and the man, noting that only the serpent and the ground are explicitly cursed, and exploring how childbirth sorrow and fractured relationships name life outside the garden. We consider why patriarchy is a result of the fall, not God's design, how toil reshapes our vocation, and why exile explains the ache we all feel. Along the way we talk proto-gospel hope, the meaning of Eve's name, spiritual warfare as everyday unity, and God's tender act of clothing his children. The story does not end east of Eden. In Christ, the serpent's head is crushed and the way home is opened.
In this message we confront the sobering reality of life 'east of Eden' - our fallen state apart from God. The passage reveals how God's wrath is justified against humanity's rejection of His truth, evident in creation and conscience. We're challenged to recognize our own rebellion, exchanging God's glory for idols and His truth for lies. This spiritual diagnosis isn't meant to condemn, but to highlight our desperate need for Christ. The imagery of the cherubim's sword guarding Eden poignantly illustrates our separation from God, bridged only by Jesus' sacrificial death. As we reflect on our own attempts to reach the 'tree of life' through self-righteousness or denial, we're called to embrace the gospel's offer of reconciliation and renewal through faith in Christ.

A life lost way too soon at 24 years old, James Dean will always be remembered as one of Hollywood's greatest actors. Add to that feat the fact that he only had leading roles in three films and his potential becomes infinitely more devastating. In honoring him seventy years after his passing, Sophia and Nick look back at two of his films that were also released that same year: Elia Kazan's triumphant adaptation of John Steinbeck's epic novel, East of Eden, and Nicholas Ray's definitive portrait of 1950's America, Rebel Without a Cause (34:24). Listen as they discuss Dean's career highlights and how his performances stand out even among many other Oscar nominees (and a winner!) and CinemaScope beauty that transports us back in time. It's fratricide, it's brother killing brother, it's a sensational story—the story of Cain and Abel. People call this the first case study of murder, but I think that's missing the point. It's actually the first case study of life east of Eden. In Genesis 4, we see three realities are always present in every day, every part of life east of Eden. It shows that in every aspect of life you always have three things operating: sin, grace, and the possibility of salvation. Let's look at what this teaches us about 1) the secrecy of sin, 2) the gentleness of grace, and 3) the subtlety of salvation. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 26, 2000. Series: Genesis – The Gospel According to God. Scripture: Genesis 4:1-16. The Western romantic idea of human nature was that we're inherently good. But the problem is over the last century, we've discovered that oppression and evil have not gone away but rather have erupted with ferocity over and over again regardless of social and political arrangements. This has created a crisis for the modern secular person. But the book of Genesis not only accounts for what we see, but also gives us enormous hope that there's something that can be done about it. Let's look at what Genesis teaches us about the human condition and the hope for healing through three vivid images: 1) the reaching, 2) the covering, and 3) the sword. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 19, 2000. Series: Genesis – The Gospel According to God. Scripture: Genesis 3:20-4:2.
