We are so sad to be wrapping up this Dear Diary season, but happy to have our favorite complicated woman of history, Marie Antoinette, to do it with. We read Marie Antoinette, Princess of Versailles of The Royal Diaries series by Kathryn Lasky (published in 2000) and we have a lot to say about this teenage future queen of France. Join us for a Royal History for Dummies, where we hate on royalty in all its forms, fangirl over Sophia Coppola's take on MA (and her films in general), and parse through our feelings about the way legacies of “Bad Women” are talked about. Plus, did you know that even back in 1700s France, teenage girls still had to feign interest in their boyfriend's hobbies in order to impress them? Some things never change… Follow us on Instagram @toalltheya www.instagram.com/toalltheya You can find citations, notes, and further reading on this episode at our website kayceeracer.com/toalltheya Theme Music by Slip.stream - "In And Out Of Love"

Are you uncomfortable with the stories of Esther and Tamar, two women of Scripture who manipulated powerful men's sexual desire as part of their strategies? Was that "wrong" of them to do? To get the answer to this question, we've got to look at the stories: How does God talk about these two ladies? Turns out they're both described as virtuous heroines who saved the entire human race -- if Esther and Tamar hadn't had the "courage of their convictions", the Messianic line would have failed. God's storytelling always messes with our preconceived notions -- Tamar, for example, is the first woman listed in the New Testament. Learning to read the stories of the Bible correctly is the point of saying "Stories Are Soul Food." Oh, and speaking of uncomfortable stories, the next Look at Moving Pictures Club (LAMPC) pick is Angel Studio's "Sound of Freedom," by popular request. Get to the theater and watch the indie film that beat Indiana Jones. #StoriesAreSoulFood #SASF #Esther #Tamar #MessianicLine #ReadtheStory #UncomfortableBibleStories #SoundofFreedom #AngelStudios #LAMPC

The rich and famous leave many traces in the historical records, but how can you reconstruct the lives of ordinary people who lived decades and decades ago? That was the challenge facing the team behind the Bad Women podcast. Hosts Hallie Rubenhold and Alice Fiennes sit down with genealogist Kate Healy to discuss the detective work involved in scouring the archives for the scraps of information which - when gathered together - created a richer picture of the women chronicled in seasons one and two. The story of the Blackout Ripper partly takes place in the wartime bars and clubs of West End London. To recreate their sound, Bad Women's composer and sound designer Pascal Wyse put together a quartet to play jazz tunes of the time. Here Pascal and guitarist Ed Gaughan talk about the history of that music and play some of the numbers in full on this episode on Pushkin Industries' Broken Record show, hosted by Justin Richmond. The band included Ed Gaughan, Ross Hughes, Christian Miller and Marcus Penrose. They were recorded by Nick Taylor at Porcupine Studios, under the direction of Pascal Wyse. Pushkin's Ben Tolliday mixed the tracks. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Over a single week in February 1942, a sadistic killer murdered four women and attacked two more in London's bomb-ravaged nightlife district, the West End. Today, the Blackout Ripper's victims have largely been forgotten - so, in the latest season of Bad Women, historian Hallie Rubenhold and journalist Alice Fiennes reconstruct their lives. Using new research from police files, court transcripts and exhaustive genealogical studies, Hallie and Alice take an in-depth look at who these women were and how they ended up crossing paths with a depraved murderer. But Bad Women uncovers the stories of other victims too, examining why the years of the Second World War were so perilous for so many women. The preview you're about to hear tells the story of Rachel Dobkin - who disappeared after meeting up with her estranged husband. Police thought it preposterous that Harry Dobkin would have endured 20 years of arguments and financial disputes only to choose to kill Rachel now. And then a body was found in a bombed-out building… While you're listening, make sure to follow Bad Women wherever you get your podcasts.
Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond
Today we're sharing a fun conversation with the musicians who scored another Pushkin Industries podcast—Bad Women. The first season of Bad Women focused on reconstructing the lives of the five women that Jack the Ripper murdered. Now, the second season centers around a murderer every bit terrifying as Jack the Ripper, the so-called Blackout Ripper. On today's episode, Justin Richmond speaks with sound designer Pascal Wyse and jazz guitarist Ed Gaughan about their music-rich score. They talk about how they evoked the atmosphere of war-time bars and jazz clubs in 1940's London, and we'll hear them play examples of arrangements they created for the series. True crime is a solid part of our popular culture these days. Focus tends to fall on the perpetrator rather than the victim, though, something historian Hallie Rubenhold, author of excellent book The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper, wanted to challenge. And did! And continues to do! She chats to Mick about her podcast Bad Women, back for a second season. This season explores the rich and complex lives of the victims of Blitz killer, The Blackout Ripper, and looks at what wartime meant for Britain's women in terms of new opportunities and old-as-time danger. After one train vestibule too many, Abby Taylor got onboard with the Campaign for Family-Friendly Trains, and joins Jen this week to talk about why accessibility matters, and what train companies can do to make it easier for those of us with small people to get around. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen recaps the week in women's sport, including a cracking bout between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall, and joy for the Republic of Ireland's women's football team. In Rated or Dated, Hannah takes us back in time to the origins of the Bitches Be Crazy genre, as we revisit 1962's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? And in Bush Telegraph, there's a lot of toilet talk. Blame the Tories. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What is it with our culture's fascination with serial killers? Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Peter Sutclifffe, Jack the Ripper….these violent people are as well known as our national treasures, but we only know them for their horrific crimes. What role does misogyny play in how these serial killers are portrayed on our screens and in our newspapers? And how does it affect court cases? Today Kate is joined by historian Hallie Rubenhold, who wrote the bestselling book The Five, which looked into the lives of Jack the Ripper's victims, and highlighted the sexism in our society's obsession with the case. The new series of Hallie's podcast, Bad Women, investigates the lives of the victims of the Blackout Ripper, a serial killer who hunted down women during the Blitz of World War Two.*WARNING there are naughty words and adult themes in this episode*Senior Producer: Charlotte Long. In this episode, we look at Britney Spears, 'The Lost Daughter,' and how the idea of 'bad mothers' is used as a weapon against women. This piece was written and narrated by Rohitha Naraharisetty. ‘The One Story' is TS Studio's weekly podcast series, where we narrate The Swaddle's long form features at the intersection of health, gender, and culture.
We'll be dropping a trailer for the new brand new season of Bad Women next week. But in the meantime, here's a preview from Death of an Artist, a new podcast from Pushkin Industries. For more than 35 years, accusations of murder shrouded one of the art world's most storied couples: Was the famous sculptor Carl Andre involved in the death of his up-and-coming artist wife Ana Mendieta? Host Helen Molesworth revisits Mendieta's death, taking a closer look at how she might have fallen out of the window of Carl's 34th floor New York apartment, and the following trial which has divided the art world since 1985. We'll be back on October 11th with a brand new season of Bad Women, but in the meantime, we wanted to give you a taste of another history podcast we think you'll like. From History Daily, host Lindsay Graham takes listeners back in time to a certain day in history to explore a momentous event. On this episode, we'll go back to August 10, 1993 when Ruth Bader Ginsburg was sworn in as the U.S. Supreme Court's 107th justice, becoming only the second woman in history to serve on the country's highest court. Greetings friends! It's Ginni comin' at ya with the hottest pods of the week! Ok, let's calm it down a bit, folks…today, we're heading to history class. But don't worry…it's one of those rare and interesting days in class.I decided to take a peek into what the world was listening to last week in the history category. And, because I know all you true crime junkies just can't seem to get enough, it's probably no surprise who's dominating the top history pod spot? Why, it's none other than East London's own Jack the Ripper…Pushkin's Bad Women is a podcast series told by historian Hallie Rubenhold. Often portrayed as scandalous “ladies of the night”, it brings long-deserved dignity to the victims. The real lives of the women at the center of this century-spanning mystery have been historically dismissed, but this show brings them back to the center where they belong. If you feel like you're in a tug of war between true crime and dinner-table appropriate history-chat (well, I guess it depends on the dinner party…) then Bad Women might be the dish you're looking for. I think I'll just settle in here now with a spot of tea, a few biscuits, and my….my…wait, where are my earbuds?!?! Helllllllllllp!!!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Women put so much effort into being "good." That's why in this week's final Prim and Proper Women's Month episode, Elizabeth and Marinella pay tribute to a few that dared to be unhinged, bad, selfish, and just plain evil. Disclaimer: We do not promote violence or murder. Unless they really had it coming. Trigger warning: domestic violence, rape, and murder are discussed in this episode.
To celebrate part two of "Women's History Month" Carmen and John talk about BAD GIRLS. You know, like Casey Anthony, Lizzie Borden, and Anna Chlumsky's acting. Also in this episode: Carmen gives John a female-centric quiz with questions like "If a woman asks her boyfriend if another woman is hot, should the boyfriend answer honestly or just drop dead already, you bastard?" Carmen and John reveal too much of their own experiences in this area. Of course they make it about themselves, they are in show business, what do you expect?

Bad Women Series. Episode #3 of 4. Anyone who's read or seen Arthur Miller's play The Crucible likely remembers Tituba, the enslaved woman who sets off the 1692 witch panic in Salem, Massachusetts. In literature and history, she's been depicted as both a menacing Barbadian voodoo queen and a Black feminist touchstone. Who was the real Tituba? The answer is … well, not clear. But, today we'll explore the history of how she has been used, interpreted, and sought out by scholars, poets, and playwrights since the early 18th century. Today, for this installment of our Bad Women series, we're talking about Tituba, the “Black Witch” of Salem. We're producing this series as a collaboration with historian Hallie Rubenhold's new podcast Bad Women: The Ripper Retold. Rubenhold's book The Five has earned critical acclaim: this social history about the victims of Jack the Ripper is the 2019 winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-fiction and was shortlisted for the 2020 Wolfson History Prize. In over a century's worth of investigation into the unsolved murders attributed to the unknown killer called “Jack the Ripper,” little real attention has been paid to the five canonical victims--they've been treated as objects for dissection, not human beings with full lives. Author and historian Hallie Rubenhold, who published The Five in 2019 and is releasing the podcast Bad Women: The Ripper Retold with Pushkin, aims to change that narrative, and question why we've been so comfortable with it, and its implications, all along. When bad things happen to people - illness, accident or crime - our brains fool us into believing the victims must have done something to deserve their fate. This deep-seated bias is wrong though - and we should try to show more empathy for our own wellbeing. Dr Laurie Santos talks to historian Hallie Rubenhold about her research into the lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper in Victorian London - and why even today people aren't more sympathetic towards them. Woman I know over the years the relationship between you and men have been rocky to say the least. I know you dealt with broken hearts, abuse physically and verbally, cheating and being left to raise the kids along with no finacial support. Although I don't know the reason behind every situation I do apologize for nall Bad men. Ladies with this apology you do have to consider that all men aren't this way and consider that most women are not victims but initiators of the problem. Do bad women help create dead beat dad's?
